What should I buy for the baby before it's born?

So far, a crib is the only definite purchase I am making. Some unisex outfits here and there. She is only 4 months pregnant, should I be buying the drawers playpen, carseat, booster and all that mess now? Or should I wait?

Answer
I would spread the purchases out over the next few months. There's no need to rush out and buy everything at once, plus it can get financially crippling! You really only need a crib and 2 sheet sets, change table which is sometimes good to get the kind that have the drawers down the bottom and the changer on top. The best car seat you can afford, again sometimes its a good idea to get the infant to toddler reversible kind so it lasts longer. And a pram is usually a good idea too! I would wait with the playpen for now and get an electric baby swing instead and there isn't a need for a booster till the baby is much older. Don't forget a baby bath too and if you buy gender orientated outfits just keep the receipts and return the ones you don't need. That way your baby won't just be dressed in yellow and white for the first couple of weeks!

Something I also did when buying baby accessories was to get one thing a week like a packet of nappies, wipes, dummies, bibs or baby bath when I did the grocery shopping. I waited until something was on special then bought it and spread the cost over 6 mths rather than getting all that stuff at once at the end. You don't notice the cost so much then and the baby's room starts to fill up with all those things really quickly which is nice for mum to be!

best of luck and congrats!

what are the must haves for newborns?

pretty in

this is my friends email and she said i could use it. i just need to know some things that my baby cant live without when shes born. i have a tight budget so just the must haves please. and if possible could you put the price and how many of each item i need to buy a month. thank you!

Answer
The necessities for a newborn are these:

Diapers (don't buy a ton of newborn diapers because they grow out of them pretty quick. Start with one pack and if you need more, buy them after.) Pampers are about $20 for a box. I'd say we bought diapers every 1 1/2 - 2 weeks at the newborn age) There are cheaper diapers out there too, but we preferred Pampers.

Wipes (Buy in bulk if you can. Trust me you'll use them for everything.) Big box of wipes cost $7-12 depending on how big the box is and the brand name. They will last you a good while and the cheap ones are just as good as Pampers or Huggies.

Onsies and Sleepers. All the cute clothes can wait until later on. Trust me, the baby will spend more time in onsies than anything else.

If you will be nursing, get a Boppy/Nursing Pillow and at least a manual pump. They are a life saver. If you go back to work you'll need bottles and an electric pump. Make sure the pump is for woman who pump regularly. Some are only for occasional pumping and are not as good at keeping up a supply. Medela is great, but also expensive ($250 approx. for a double electric pump, but is worth the price). You can find them used for much cheaper, but you will want to buy all new bottles and pump parts. Replacement parts are not very expensive.

If you are formula feeding and when feeding pumped breastmilk, bottles are a must have. Make sure they are slow flow nipples for a newborn. I suggest buying some decent ones and don't go too cheap. You want some that reduce the amount of air your baby gets, so he/she wont be too uncomfortable after each feeding. It will also reduce spitting up.

You'll want a crib and mattress for sure, unless you will be co-sleeping. A changing table is nice, but definately not a necessity. We will just be using a changing table pad on one of our lower dressers. Crib Sheets, Mattress Pad. No need to buy an expensive bedding set. You aren't even supposed to use the comforter when they are a newborn either. It can cause SIDS, so you really don't get too much use out of it before they want a character bedding set. We bought a toddler bedding set at Walmart for $35 once our son was a bit older. Until then we just used some thin blankets we got from our baby shower.

You'll want a car seat. The hospital will not let you leave without one. The travel systems are a bit pricey, but well worth it. Once that baby is asleep, you will not want to wake him by lifting him out of a car seat.

That's all I can think of right now. Buying things used can save you a ton of money. Try Craigslist.org, but make sure things are not recalled and are not more than 3-4 years old. Many items have more safety standards and what not these days. Also, be careful when buying a car seat used. Make sure it has not been in any accidents. I really do suggest buying a new one. Sign up on websites for coupons and offers. Huggies sends out tons of coupons. Pampers kinds sucks with the coupons. If you'll be using formula you'll want to sign up and many will send you checks you can use at the store.

We're going to apply for a home at the next meeting, but I wanted to know ahead of time what all comes in the home.
We lost everything to a fire & have been in a small rv for months until just recently getting in a small mobile home, (only 2 bd when we need 4-5), so a home would be great.
We work & pay bills & qualify $ wise & the sweat equity would be no problem, so I'm not concerned with the application process or stuff like that. We even own the burned home, land & all, so there wouldn't be any land payment added to the mortgage.

I just wondered what all actually comes in the house.
* Is it completely finished inside?
* Do they include appliances, heat & cooling units, etc.?
* Do they offer pkgs that actually furnish the home, like with beds etc.?
* Do they only build certain blueprints or can you decide anything on the home, like if you want the bedrooms clumped together or seperated etc?
* What about colors?
* How basic are the designs, such as do they only have bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, & living room or do they have utility rooms, pantries, & dining rooms too?
* Do they do anything to the yard, like fences etc? (ours burned with the house)
* Can you determine your energy source for the house, like can you decide if you want natural gas or electric for your stove, etc?
* Do they do "green homes"?
* What about under the houses, the pipes & stuff in the ground, (ours are very old clay & would have to be upgraded per city code for us to rebuild or repair), do they add the cost of digging up all the old utility stuff onto the cost of your house? (I know they have to run new lines & foundations on all of them, but what about that old stuff being removed?)
* Do they do basements or attics or garages?

And I guess the most important question is, the sweat equity that you accrue, how is it calculated? * Do they count each hour at a specific rate, like at minimum wage or something, then take it off your mortgage like real $, instead of a wage kinda thing?
(I don't understand that part except that there's a minimum of 300 hours at our local chapter.)

* What about if we have 10 friends that all put in 100 hours each, does that count as 1000 hrs off our mortgage or are they just counted as volunteers & only our hours count?
* How old do you have to be for your hours to count, like if our 9, 11, 15, & 16 yr old help does that count?

* And what about AFTER our house is built & we're in it, can we still do the sweat equity thing to pay toward our home or is that only before the house is built?

Just, if anyone knows things like this, I'd appreciate the information.
I can find questions of the app process & what it's like to volunteer but I really need someone that knows these kinda details too.
Thank you
Thank you for all the info in the 1st answer, do you know if they tear down & get rid of the old house or if the property must be cleared by us before they're willing to build?
I was asking about the possibility of furniture because we were told they may work with Salvation etc to help replace some since we won't have enough basics. We're on craigslist couches at the moment.
And I was asking about the garage & fence & basement because it's in a "historic district" so there are a lot of older but larger homes & they all have those so I didn't know if the code required it, if it would still be approved. The code does require a fence.
And I wasn't worried about colors, just a basic house would be a Godsend, I was just curious how involved the new home owner got to be in planning or design or anything like that.
It would need to be atleast a 4 bd, but as we were wanting to become foster parents before the fire, if we get a home we'd want to continue

Answer
A Habitat for Humanity home is "simple, decent housing".
It's finished inside
It often includes appliances. It definitely includes a heating unit. Depending on the area, it may include cooling.
They do NOT offer packages that furnish the home with furniture.
They only build from certain blueprints, and if it's a four-bedroom home that is needed, there will probably be only one style available.
The house is generally painted a basic white inside. You want colors, you paint it yourself.
No pantries. Generally a dining area, not a dining room. Possibly a utility area somewhere in the house.
No fences for the yard.
No, you don't get a choice of energy source.
They sometimes do green homes.
They do all the prep work for the foundation, etc, and if that includes removing old pipes, that's included.
They generally do not do garages unless the local zoning requires it - it's "we build houses for people, not for cars"! Basements depend on the area as well; up here in the Northeast, everyone has them, so the houses do as well. Down South, the houses are generally built on a concrete slab.

The sweat equity is simply calculated in hours. No, it's not taken off of your mortgage; your mortgage is already lower than market value because of all the volunteer hours put into the home. And generally, it's only the hours the people living in the house put in that will count toward your total. You can't work on a Habitat site till you're 16, so your younger kids won't be able to help. You have to do a portion of your sweat equity before your house is even started, working on the houses of other people, and all of your sweat equity must be done before you get to move into the house. It's part of your "down payment".

There's quite a cost involved in tearing down and getting rid of an old house. You'd have to talk to them about that.
I've never heard of a Habitat affiliate "working with" the Salvation Army to get furniture for a house. That's not to say it isn't done - or that you couldn't work with the SA to make it happen.
As for the requirements of code in an historic district, they may be onerous enough that your Habitat affiliate would not be willing to work with them. To put it bluntly, the extra money they might have to spend to do that could be spent helping another deserving family.

What is your vision for the future of America?

Lleh

I don't mean what do you think is reasonably possible given the present circimstances. I don't mean the names of the leaders who can make it happen. I just want to know what you really want America to be like in the best of all possible (or impossible) futures. What will your kids and grandkids and great great grandkids experience in the best America you can envision?

Answer
What I would want the nation to be and what it is most likely to become are two entirely different things.

It would have been nice if Americans discovered to concentrate their living into compact but livable cities, rather than the sometimes insane urban sprawl. I myself live outside the nearby city, but in a housing development that is surrounded by meadows. Unfortunately, that scene will soon change when the nearby airport expands.

We spread out so much, not to farm or do ranching or such then-localized economic activity. But it is to live apart from where we work. If this country did as a hundred years ago, in this aspect alone, there would be people living near where they work. There also were trams and trolleys in network through some rural areas, so not everyone had to have a horse or car in order to live their lives. But today, mass transit solutions are impossible (or impossibly expensive) because we are not conveniently concentrated.

I would like to see the use of solar cells on every roof, storing up energy (probably in basements or garage batteries or fuel cells) during the day and keeping the home conveniently comfortable at night when we return from work or whatever. While some, though not all, manufacturing processes are terrible polluters, perhaps the alternative, mechanical processes would work (their efficiencies are greater, but need more maintenance considerations) such as mirrors that heat fluids into gases. I would think that telecommuting would be a bigger thing, more people comfortably working from the comfort of home, but with technology keeping them sufficiently connected to keep them from loneliness (or loafing). With robots and automation, a home with a basement or a workshop in the backyard could even be a mini-assembly stage of industry.

Closed-cycle processes need to be employed, not so much as the "green thing to do" but because they are less polluting and more manageable. Electric cars (charged up by my home's own electricity, generated by the sunlight that naturally falls on my roof, currently merely heating my attic and the air around it) could help me get around.

Another thing is the old concept of staged transportation. Air travel is only for long distances where the travel must necessarily be swift (family emergency in a distant city, an engineer needed to fix a unique problem) or for very long distances. Trains were for regional transport of people. Buses were for local transport. Of course, as suggested before, places like work, church, and the grocery should be close enough to walk there.

Finally, I suspect that some common services might need something akin, but not directly, to socialization of medicine and transport. I like capitalism and the freedom it allows. But until we discover on our own the ways to nicely live together we are missing the convenient opportunities to do such common things as provide an inexpensive and unburdening transportation or medical system. We largely do that with education.

Unfortunately, politics and historical baggage make my 'vision' impossible, impractical, or undesireable, even to me. Getting the needed agreement simply won't happen. The ideas have been around a long time, good ideas, but unworkable unless forced upon us -- undesireable if they are forced.

Not too expensive, please. I can't afford all those electronic gadgets. Thanks

Answer
*They have the "lump o' coal" stocking stuffers at many retailers that have different gifts inside. Personally my oldest son collects cars. So what I bought last year was a pack of two that had the hotwheels inside.
*You can buy those small remote control cars ( I mean matchbox size small). Which seems to be a big hit with kids and parents alike b/c they are cheap and are not too space consuming. They can be found at walmart for about 3 or 4 dollars.
*Pack of Batteries.
*Finger Flashlights.
*One of their favorite cartoons or movies on DVD. I know it sounds expensive but relatively not. Walmart had ones like Spiderman 2 etc for 2.96.
*School Supplies( things you were going to have to buy anyway, its an even better idea if they are into drawing etc.) *You could get pencils, pens, colored pencils, etc.
*A Watch.
*Yo-Yo.
*Want to try something different and unique? How about going to a local museum or novelty store, you could buy some space food/drinks,lunar ice candy and funny gifts like talking pens or whoppie cushions.
*If they have a collection of some sort (rock, stamp, etc.) you could buy them something to add to that collection.
*You can buy those handheld games (starting anywhere from a dollar at dollar stores and walmart and on up. )
*Some cool Spy gagets/gear.
*If they like Harry Potter you could buy them some of those harry potter jelly beans in a bag for a dollar. They have many weird and different ones with burn toast flavor and many more. I bought several b/c they are very neat. They even come in a purple bag that can be reused. They also have choclate covered bugs, and Jelly slugs and range from 1.00-3.00.
*Socks.
*A Hat.
*I got Nextar 512 mb Digital MP3 players for 9.99 a few days ago.(TOYS R US)
*What about bath gift set ( or singles ) Like Axe or Bod. You can get body sprays, colognes, deoderent and body washes.
*Gloves.
*A small box of nascar shaped chocolate cars. (you can get their favorite racer if they are into nascar)
*Do they play a sport or an instrument? (get them something related to that, new knee pads etc.)
*If they already have some electronic gagets how about some accesories for it, like new earphones or skins.
*A book.
*A science experiment book.
*Video Games if they already have a system like psp, xbox, playstation etc. You could get them a new game or any one that you think they would enjoy.
*A new toothbrush.
*How about some nostalgic candy assortments like:
Candy Buttons
Candy Cigarettes
Wax Fangs, Bazooka
Jaw Breakers
Mary Janes
Candy Necklace
Cinnamon Fire-Pix
Atomic Fire Balls
Chick-o-stik
Sugar Daddy
Lemon Heads
Boston Baked Beans
Licorice Pipe
Root Beer Barrels

*Wallets
*Electric Toothbrushes
*Electric Razors (if its that time)
*Their Favorite magazine.
*Their Favorite Candies

I go to our Eveything is a dollar store, where I buy a huge stocking for both of my boys (you see these elsewhere for 15 dollars or more). They stand about 2 and a half to 3 feet tall. Not a bad deal for a dollar, and have good quality, they withhold all I pack in them and hanging up. Good luck and I hope this helps. Happy Holidays !

I have my opinions on what are the causes...and i also know what the news says...and websites online.. and all that fun stuff.

i believe it's simply supply and demand. its the best buisness in this country right now...so as a result the producers and raise the prices to whatever they'd like. as a result .. i bought a bike .. best 50 bucks i ever spent. honestly.

so what do you guys think? and have you done anything about it??!

Answer
Well, I live in KS, so how about a nice, horse-drawn covered wagon for truckin' around town?

There have been about as many excuses for high gas prices in the news as there are days in the year.

I was trying to think today about what our country will be like in another 5 years. How our reactions to our mistakes in capitalism will change how we do things....

I pictured highways full of bicycles. If I didn't have to lug around 2 kids, and my husband didn't have to carry his tools to work, bikes would work for us too. Can't imagine what'll happen in the snow.

I believe that speculation in the futures market is ruining the price of oil/gas. I also believe that the govt has let this happen because it keeps our economy moving.

Funny..I don't know if you are old enough to remember the gas lines in the 70's, but those were a direct result of Pres. Nixon freezing the price of gas (as good old Hillary Clinton planned to do, too). His actions caused terribly long gas lines. It was a real mess. You'd think that present day leaders would be able to look back 30-40 years to learn not to repeat history by making the same mistakes.

I don't know why it is so hard for our government to give huge incentives to auto makers who develop a car that doesn't use gas.

On the other hand....If we found a way to make a car run with wind turbines, the govt would find a way to tax the WIND, and heavily, at that.

Welcome to capitalism.

It would be nice if our government, if they REEEEALLY want to stop global warming and not be dependent on terrorists to survive (they sell us the oil)...then they would give us FREE electric cars.

What bothers me about this whole gas thing, is that many people who don't have much money are the ones who do most of the driving. They have to choose whether to keep their jobs and drive, or to eat 3 meals a day. Wealthy people still drive their humvees and escalades to run errands all day...they use tons of gas.

Soon, I feel that it will come down to the fact that only the wealthy will be on the roads.

The only thing my family has done so far, is to stop driving.
My husband drives his 20mpg car to work and to run errands by himself. I and my daughters and the Chrysler Pacifica stay HOME.

I think I might be more worried than most people about the gas situation. I see that it will turn our middle income family into a LOW income family....within the next year.

My husband has been driving 600 miles a week for his job, and is not reimbursed.

Someone is getting rich from our suffering. If someone wants us to stop being dependent on oil (Bush...our govt), they need to provide CHEAP alternatives immediately.
Otherwise, I fear, there will be rioting soon.

And, yes, every day, there is another excuse for gas prices going up. I am so sick of hearing each and every one.

Flashy cars under $70,000?

Q. I am looking for some flashy cars that are umder $70,000 that when I drive by people go wow. I know what you're thinking, another kid uaing Daddy's money to buy a car, and yes, I am.

I'm going to be babysitting soon, a 2 and a half year old and a five year old. I was just wondering what some fun things are to do while babysitting, I want to be like the best babysitter ever for them.

Answer
-Make play dough! http://www.busybeekidscrafts.com/Salt-Doâ¦
You can even take a small food storage container (of yours) to have the kids decorate with stickers, etc. that will hold their play dough it.

--Go outside!
Play with chalk.
Blow bubbles. (you can even make them)
Take a walk/bike ride
Visit a park
Have a picnic
Bring some water guns
Do a scavenger hunt: Have them find a pink flower, a blue car, etc.

-Decorate a pillow case
Buy some cheap pillow cases, and write their name on it in sharpie. Get some fabric markers for them to decorate the pillow with.

-DANCE!
Put some songs like: The Macerana, the twist, chicken dance, hokey pokey, electric slide, etc. on a CD or a playlist on your ipod. Turn off the lights, expect for some dimmed ones or a lamp, even try to get a disco ball! Let them dance freely, or play freeze dance.

-Play games!
Hide and seek
Twister
Go fish
Slap Jack
Candy Land

-Bowling
Set up a bowling alley with some water bottles or plastic cups as pins, and a soup can as the ball.

-Frost cookies!
Make some cookies before the kids get there, or you go to their house. Let them put frosting and sprinkles on the cookies.

-ColoIring
You can take big poster boards and stamps, stickers, markers... Or you can print off coloring sheets, and have them make their own coloring book

--Limbo...

-Movie "theater"
Bring 4-5 movies for them to pick from, make tickets, have a concession stand.
A fun idea with this topic is if you can bring some large cardboard boxes to make fake cars out of and have a pretend drive in movie.

Just be creative!!
For more ideas please email me at jaide.babysitting@yahoo.com I really love talking to other babysitters!

How can I get him to help me out around the house and with the kids?

Jolene R

I am currently 7 months pregnant and I also have a 6 year old son (2 different fathers) I also have living with me my fiance's daughter who is 5 years old. I work part time currently and go to college part time. I handle most of the affairs with the children like homework, driving to and from school, getting them ready in the morning for school, taking baths, laundry, cleaning the house and so on and so forth,. My fiance has almost totally stopped helping with any of these tasks even though it is his daughter I am taking care of. Now he spends most of his time working and playing video games and his other hobby flying electric airplanes and driving remote controlled gas powered cars. I am desperate for something to change. We have not even set up the baby's room yet. He spends all of his extra money on his hobby's and I don't have much money since I only work 2 days a week and I will not be working after Jan. 3rd. Is there anything I can say or do to make some immediate changes? Please

What are some jobs that deal with helping the environment?

Hello. I am a 16 year old high school junior searching for a potential career I would want to have in the future and what I would want to major in, in collage. I thought about environmental engineering for a while (probably just for the title) but found upon greater research that it would be dealing a lot with fixing problems that deal with human health like waste water management and air quality control. Is there any other profession that deals with helping the environment? Solar panels and electric cars really interest me. Could electrical engineering be a good fit for that?

Answer
Biologist or park/forest ranger.electric cars are not taking off like people thought they would and solar companies are going out of business daily.

I am interested in the chevy volt cars and need to know how much they cost?

Balmi

I would also like informaion of the zenn, flybo, and leaf electric cars.

Answer
The Chevrolet Volt will cost between $37,000 and $42,000 (estimated price), but as stated before you will get Government rebates (I believe $7,500). It runs on electricity for 40 miles, and then will switch to a small gasoline powered engine/generator. So if you drive less than 40 miles a day, you won't use any gasoline at all. The Volt has also been a concept for a few years now, and has lots of engineering in it. It isn't a rushed job like the Nissan Leaf.

Not only is the Nissan Leaf ugly, but it was rushed into production (never a good thing) and will only drive about 100 miles on a charge. It will supposedly cost about $32,000 before any rebates. You will also have to install a Home Charging system (about $2,500 or more depending on how old your home is), and since the Leaf is a 100% electric car (does NOT run on Gasoline at all), you are running the risk of running out of energy and being stranded since recharging stations are not commonly available yet (but they are being built). Also, it will take about 20 hrs to fully charge a completely depleted Battery on the Nissan Leaf with a 110/120 V outlet.

The ZENN Electric car is a virtual unknown, only has a 35 mile range, and even though it will cost an estimated $13,000, it is small and looks like it was crudely built. The quality just isn't there (you get what you pay for). It is about the size of a Smart Car in comparison, and has a 30hp electric motor, and only has a top speed of 25 miles an hour. It cannot be driven on the highway, or most common roads for that matter. Its like an electric golfcart, lol. Don't waste your money on it.

The Flybo is a Chinese built copy of the Smart Car, but is Electric as well. It has a range of up to 100 miles, costs a little over $10,000, and has a top speed of 42 miles per hour so it is driveable on regular roads but will not be good for highway use.

Overall, the Chevrolet Volt is the clear winner. Yes it costs more, but it is the best looking, it is designed to be a daily driven car that produces zero emissions, it is getting great reviews, and it is designed to last and be reliable. Go with a Volt, you will not regret it.

Get them a nice cologne! I'm sure both of you would enjoy it! Maybe Eternity by Calvin Klein? Or Acqua Di Gorgio? Maybe a nice 'For Men' cologne kit? Really, they WILL like it! I think Macy's still has their sale up too!

You could also get them like, maybe some roller skates or roller blades; get them into doing father son stuff.

Or some Swiss army knives! Any guy would like one of those!

Or maybe some tools? Like a small set of electric wood carvers and burners? They could build/make small plaques or carve then darken with the burn setting a picture! Get them creative! = )

Maybe if they like a certain TV show you could get them the first season?

You could start them on a hobby collection! Stamps, some rare coins... etc, etc!

There's always cool shark teeth pendants for guys!

You could get an African mask to hang in their room!

Or something from the Ed Hardy collection!

RC cars or helicopters never grow old despite your age! Get them that helicopter set where each helicopter is equipped with a laser. And when they are in the air the first helicopter ht by the other helicopter loses all power and falls to the ground! They also have that for tanks!

Or maybe two RC cars totally different from one another that they can race against each other to see which is the fastest!

Or maybe a nice pocket watch for each of them! With a cool design on the front!

Giftcards are always nice!

Do they use toothpicks a lot? You could get them a sleek silver toothpick holder with their initials engraved on it! That's what I got my brother in law last year! Here's the link: http://www.x-tremegeek.com/templates/SearchDetail.asp?productID=11481

Do they have a favorite candy? You could get their favorite candy in bulk at Amazon! I'm getting 5 lbs of sour patch kids this year!

Maybe some small 5 or 10 pound dumbells to go jogging with?

Once again, have a Merry Christmas and I hope you finally find something to buy them! = )

What is the best way to redirect your daughter's attention away from boys?

MOs fishin

I notice in her school progress report, her grades have dropped. Need some parent help on something that worked for you.

Answer
Depends on her age. Be watchful of what she views on TV and time spent online - Become the hang out house, worked for me- a bunch of extra effort, but you know where they are at all times. We made the family room, the after school, homework, snack, hangout room..The other kids appreciate it too.

Talk-Talk-Talk...and then show by example...kids dont do what we tell them---they do what they see us do

My Husband actually lived by this -- lol --

"10 rules for dating my little girl"

Rule One:
If you pull into my driveway and honk you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up.

Rule Two:
You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them.

Rule Three:
I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose his compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.

Rule Four:
I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a "barrier method" of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

Rule Five:
It is usually understood that in order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is "early."

Rule Six:
I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry.

Rule Seven:
As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process that can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car?

Rule Eight:
The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there are no parents, policemen, or nuns within eyesight. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka - zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided; movies which features chain saws are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better.

Rule Nine:
Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a potbellied, balding, middle-aged, dim-witted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless god of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and five acres behind the house. Do not trifle with me.

Rule Ten:
Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in over a rice paddy near Hanoi. When my Agent Orange starts acting up, the voices in my head frequently tell me to clean the guns as I wait for you to bring my daughter home. As soon as you pull into the driveway you should exit your car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the perimeter password, announce in a clear voice that you have brought my daughter home safely and early, then return to your car - there is no need for you to come inside. The camouflaged face at the window is mine.

What's the most earth friendly car on the market today? Also is there any solar powered cars in the works yet?

I think that having solar powered cars would be amazing you hear about people trying to make them possible and then the idea just fades away. I guess that would be a big upset for the gas company's or maybe it's just impossible.... Any why, what is the most earth friendly car on the market right now and what is it powered by?

Answer
A problem with solar is the energy conversion is so low that to be affective the cells must be put into huge frames on large land areas. These are solar farms that convert the Sun's energy into electricity.
The most earth friendly vehicle is made in India and are used as delivery trucks. They run on compressed air. Here in the states, a complete electric car that can travel 200 miles on a charge is called a Tesla sports car and costs over $100,000. Here is the problem, it runs quietly and efficiently on electricity but where does this power come from? Much of our electricity comes from heavily polluting coal generators. See the problem?

Don't you think obama wants the gas price to go up so we buy his green energy junk?

Self-Hatin

Because even with massive subsidies, all of these "green energy' firms are still going out of business and we are losing billions. Now if gas is so expensive that we can no longer afford it (because of his offshore drilling halt and stoppage of the Keystone pipeline) we might actually be force to buy one of his crappy electric cars that go 20 miles to a charge.

Answer
Green energy will not be plentiful for about a decade. So wanting that and risking his own reelection does not make sense. As to your other points, offshore drilling is not stopped, in fact it has doubled. The Keystone pipeline had serious safety and pollution problems plus the oil in the pipeline was never intended to be used in the US. The Canadians themselves nixed building the pipeline to their west coast because of pollution concerns and the US route was their plan B. The pipeline goes to a international trade zone at Port Arthur, Tx where it is to be loaded on tankers and sold to India and China who pay more for oil. In reality, the largest exported product in the US is gasoline in which we have a surplus, the rise in gas prices are a sham. Those all electric cars are getting over 200 miles (I believe 250+) miles per charge. The hybrid cars get less because the gas engine takes up space and weight that would normally go to batteries. In both cases, that number of miles would support most commuter trips to work and back. z

What steps will Big Oil companies take to ensure that very few people buy electric cars?

Byakuya

Now that electric cars are finally starting to become available, the Big Oil companies will undoubtedly be plotting and planning how to keep people from buying them. What strategies do you think they'll use to keep us dependent upon gas?

Answer
Same thing they did for the EV-1... petition government to keep oil standards low, wage a media war against them as being weak, unsafe, bad for business, and even un-American.

(Or say stupid stuff like Greed above - especially when the energy that it does take to charge a car is a fraction of the amount of energy that goes into an automotive gas combustion engine for the same amount of mileage... Not to mention that even with the US's "dirty" power grid, electric car's secondary emissions would still be less then half of of the total emissions by a conventional US gasoline auto.

But then again, which industry would have the most to lose if the US did upgrade our power grids??? So, who can we expect to put up obstacles to that as well?)

Why do people think that electric cars will reduce air pollution?

Phil

If we're talking about conventional electric cars that have to be plugged in, you have to consider how that electricity is being generated. The majority of power plants in this country are COAL-POWERED. If we all had electric cars, we wouldn't have any exhaust coming out of the cars, but there would be a lot more coal being burned to generate the electricity to charge the cars' batteries. So how does that reduce pollution?

Answer
Actually, I think that solar panels at home to charge the electric car would make a difference.

I suspect that the inefficiencies in electric power generation due to generation loss and transmission loss may well result in more CO2 emissions if we rely on the exisitng electric generation system than if we just used gasoline powered vehicles.

Since we have no new nuclear plants and most of our rivers have already been dammed for hydro, incremental electricity for the electric car will undoubtedly come from coal fired plants. There is better coal plant technology that reduces CO2 dramatically, but it is not manatory and is not the method of choice for power plant construction due to higher costs.

marrying a physically disabled guy?

Foreveryou

what is it like being married/in a relationship with a guy who has a sci?
anytype of sci...from those who are paralyzed neck down, to those who can live independently. i want to know everything...from dressing and eating to kids and sex to work and insurance. how much different is it from marrying a guy without a physical disability? is it much different?
im truly curious and interested, so please no rude answers.
thanks :)

Answer
I come at this question as someone who is in a long term committed relationship with a man who has a disability and requires the use of a motorised wheelchair. He does not have a spinal cord injury, rather he has Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic condition which has caused his upper limb muscles and torso muscles to waste and not regenerate.

I also work full time as a personal care attendant to people with many disabilities, including people with SCI's ranging from C3/4 to lower lumbar injury, from car accidents, skiing accidents, football accidents, and cancer.

As has already been mentioned, it will depend entirely on:-

(a) Level of injury - a paraplegic who has an injury at say, the lumbar region of the spine, will usually be a lot more independent than a high cervical injured quadriplegic.

(b) Their independence - this comes into an entirely different category, because some people with disabilities will understand and recognise the need for care to be obtained from elsewhere other than within their relationship/family. Getting too much help from the partner/family can place enormous strain on the relationship, so carers are ideal for maintaining a healthy relationship.

(c) The resources they have around them.

One of my clients is a C3/4 quad. He was in a football accident when he was 15 (he's now early 40's). He is totally reliant on an electric wheelchair with arm supports as he cannot move his arms himself and if it weren't for the arm supports he would struggle to use the joystick.

He can use a chin control, and had to when he broke his right shoulder due to osteoporosis which he has developed as he is non-weightbearing.

He uses a mouthstick to do anything else. To press remote control buttons, to use his mobile phone, to turn pages of a book..
He is totally reliant on his carers for feeding, cooking, medication administration, bowel care (toileting), showering, dressing, positioning in wheelchair, shaving, cleaning teeth, cutting fingernails..

He has been married, and divorced, as his wife cracked with all the pressure he put on her. He didn't get enough help and she had to do a lot more than a wife would normally have to. until she left. They are still good friends, but he now knows from experience that the boundary between carer and partner needs to be maintained.

Some lower level quads and paras are able to do their own bowel care, and most of mine have catheters which we are not responsible for changing. Others are able to dress and wash themselves, and may need little help at all!

My client works from home as a counsellor. He is really good at it, because he is very observent and intelligent. I don't think he wants kids now, but many people with SCI's can't ejaculate, and he's no different. He can obtain and sustain an erection with stimulation (and some medicinal intervention).

I do know another guy who is a low level quadriplegic, and his wife had a little boy a few years ago. His semen was extracted somehow and she was artificially inseminated. So it is possible for them to have kids.
I was speaking to someone the other day as well who said he knows a female quad who had a baby.. would have to be so careful though!

As for sex, creativity is the key.

My partner, whilst capable of fine motor movement, cannot raise his arms from his lap.. however if I place his hands somewhere, he can "spider" them to where he wants them (ie he uses his fingers to walk his hand to where he wants it).

I have to take a much more active role in our relationship, but I love him very much so I'm quite happy with being creative. We are not actually in a sexual relationship yet (we don't believe in sex before marriage) but we do snuggle and stuff. Just have to have an open mind, and creativity.

The one down side is that if you are in a relationship with someone who has a disability and has carers, you have to be prepared to have your privacy invaded, and to be prepared to work around when the carers can come in.

Hope that all helps.

The Next Generation?

Dew Drop

A 75-year-old man made the trip back to his old college to take one last look around campus again before he settled in to retired life.

As he got to the student quad he saw a young man studying hard, bringing back memories. He sat on the bench beside the lad, but was surprised when the kid started spouting off at him.

"Your generation will never understand my generation," the kid lectured. "You grew up in a different world. In fact, your world is almost primitive compared to mine," the student said.

"Is that right?" the elder man said.

"The young people of today grew up with television, jet planes, space travel, microwaves. I can carry a dozen books on a tiny chip in my pocket organizer. We have nuclear energy, electric and hydrogen cars, computers with light-speed processing, and," he paused to take swig of beer....

The senior took advantage of the break in the student's litany and said, "You're right, son. We didn't have those things when we were young -- so we invented them. Now, you arrogant little bastard, what are you doing for the next generation?"

Ah, seniors: they may be slow, but they're thorough!

Is there financial help out there for a recently divorced, working mother of three?

Q. I live in Kentucky, I'm still waiting to finalize my divorce, trying to get my share of the assets, and in the middle of trying to get full custody. I work a full time job and receive child support, this is still not enough to support me and my three girls. I am having to rely on the support of another guy whom I do not love and is borderline abusive and I would love to get away from him but I can not afford to do it on my own.

Answer
Yes there is..It's called wellfare help..sounds awful i know..but this is about supporting your 3 kids till things get better in your life..and it will..it's just going to take some time...trust me the wellfare office understands the struggles of single parents and by u going down there to apply for the things that u are having trouble to make ends with...they will help u...so long as u are 100 percent honest with them...Number one..if u don't have medical insurance to cover the kids...u will get it right away..since u are a family of 4.(not including this guy)and u make 40 thousand or less u can get it..including foodstamps..(just untill things get better).U can also apply for public housing..sure that sounds awful..but there are alot of places that are decent as hell and u wouldn't ever know that the landlord allows section 8 people.(section 8 means the landlord gets there rent period no questions ask cause the state pays him u pay him just a little maybe only 100 to 200 a month only set back is u are on a waiting list..but it goes quick in the spring time..u can also get help with heat the list is endless..all u need to show them is all the kids Social security numbers, yours as well..proof of paycheckstub from your job and copys of all your bills that u pay.like car insurance gas bill electric bill ect ect..u will be flabbergasted on all the areas that the wellfare dept can help u with...Remember this is your tax money that is helping u so why not make it work for your kids
there is also a place called the YWCA not YMCA(thats for men)they help with apartments furniture childcare ect ect..i know u ask for financial help here..instead of getting a check to cover your bills..all that i mention above they personaly pay your bills for u..if u ever want to talk more to me please feel free to contact me through my name...Good luck sweety u can do it..and get rid of the abusive so called boyfriend u don't need this right now..u and your kids come first and nothing else..PERIOD

Fuelectric

Even looking for new technologies if anyone has heard of very small technologies which are affordable. Can't quite seem to find much in the U.S. on the web.

Answer
There are a few electric car companies in the US. One includes the Global Electric Motorcar Company, or GEM. (http://www.gemcar.com/) There are a number of dealers throughout the US and Canada. They make low-speed vehicles that you can use around town and are legal in nearly all 50 states and BC in Canada. Another would be ZENN Car, made in Canada. (http://www.zenncars.com/) They are too low-speed electric vehicles and are sold in the US but not Canada. (Odd?) I like these cars much better than the GEM Cars, because they are safer, more enclosed and have A/C! All you have to do is plug them in at night in a regular outlet.

However, I'd wait for the Th!nk City. (http://www.think.no/think) They claim for it to be under $20000 when it reaches the US early next year. It is very safe and can go up to 65mph. It's slightly bigger than a Mercedes Smart car and can be equipped with 2 "Child Seats" (very small seats) in the back! It is fully electric and is charged via regular outlet in your home. It can run for up to 110 miles on full charge. Fun, much?

Anyway, that's all I know. Sad that most of us can't buy a Tesla Roadster. :(

Just starting to learn more about sports cars?

David

Ok so ive been trying to decide for a while now about which car to get and im trying to decide between the 370z Nismo, The mustang gt, and of course, the chevy Camaro. Im doing my homework on these cars and I kinda like the look of them all so im looking for the one which can pretty much out perform the other. I heard that theres an engine that can start off as a V8 and then can switch to a V6! I think that's amazing but I don't know much about it, how does this work and can any of these use this feature?

Also what does torque mean lol?

Answer
Opinions vary on which car is better than which other car, and in the long-run you'll decide which one best suits you.

As to cars functioning as V6s and V8s, the concept has been around quite awhile, but has previously not worked well in execution. Essentially, you provide fuel, air and spark to six cylinders of a V8, or in some earlier iterations as few as four cylinders, but when you plant your foot on the throttle the ignition and fuel supplies to the additional cylinders is activated as the demand for horsepower and torque exceeds what is available in the current lesser mode of operation. Though it sounds simple, it has been an elusive goal to accomplish effectively until recently--and I'd say the jury is still out on it. Likewise, cars that currently shut the engine off every time you come to a stop light, may well save fuel, as the 8-6-4 concept is intended to do, but how reliable is it? It certainly places a premium on having a good battery or capacitor system to aid restart. It also greatly increases wear on the starter motor. Just not sure either of these technologies are all they are represented to be.

What is torque? That's a little easier. Think of it as a measure of force. For example, horsepower is a measure of a capacity to perform work. One horsepower translates as the ability to move 33,000 pounds one foot in one minute. However, an exertion of torque may occur with little discernible consequence at all. When I press as hard as I can against the side of the Empire State Building, it does not appear to move at all, but force is being exerted nonetheless. Torque is simply a measurement of how much force that would be. A 250-pound linebacker can exert a little more than a four-year old child.

Now in terms of engines torque is usually expressed in how many foot-pounds of turning force the engine can generate, sometimes measured at the flywheel, sometimes at the drive axle. And here is something I've always found kind of interesting. You will notice when they are making claims about an engine's torque they usually express it in relation to the engine's RPMs. For example, a reasonably powerful engine might have peak torque of 350 ft. lbs at 2500 RPMs Torque may trail off somewhat as the engine revs higher than that, or operates at speeds lower than that. And, in most instances, what is referred to as a "flat" torque curve is considered highly desirable, as that means that the engine produces roughly the same amount of torque across a large RPM range, say from 2,000 RPMs all the way up to 5,000. But no internal combustion engine produces torque at 0 RPMs. Steam engines (external combustion) do, as the steam moving into the piston is trying to turn the train's axles even when movement is not present. Likewise, electric car motors have measurable torque even when the motor is not spinning, as the magnets inside are still trying to turn. But internal combustion engines in cars must achieve a certain operating speed before they begin to generate useful torque.

Ok, so me and some friends were wondering if they made those little kid cars( you know the electric powered ones?) or like the 4 wheelers or quads and they could hold 2 people and more than 200 pounds? We're 16, not fat mkaythxbai Anyway, any ideas? Something cheap?

Answer
There are some. but they don't really make much sense quite yet (hopefully they will improve this technology in the near future!). Basically they are way too small for other motorist to see you, they have a horrible range (like 50 miles before they run out of juice..), they're really rare and quite expensive (it would be hard to get one, basically).
Plus they only seat two people, as you know. and they're not very quick.
IF you want something fun. AERIAL ATOM :D they are insanely fast and can handle way better than cars, but really expensive. (oh, and they're street legal)

IS A DODGE CUMMINS GOOD FOR A 15 YR OLD?

Chris

IM TURNING 15 AND I WANTED TO KNOW IF A DODGE CUMMINS A GOOD TRUCK FOR A 15 YR OLD THANKS

Answer
Hey, I started with a 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 Quad-cab at the age of 15 (you get a permit license at 15 in Fl). I can tell you that if you can drive a full size truck reasonably well at 15, you're probably gonna be a good driver. In my opinion, it's better to master large vehicles first, so that driving smaller cars later, will be even easier.

I don't know if that type of vehicle is good for you. It really depends on what you need it for, and how good you are behind the wheel. In all honesty, that type of truck is for hauling really heavy loads... (and scaring the sh!t outta snotty college prius-kids). I'd say stick with a light-duty, and if possible, a Hemi. People will respect it, dimwits in electric golf-cart-turned-cars will fear it, and you'll have an easier time driving it than a 2500 or 3500 Cummins.

I've looked at a few websites and see that I can get gas powered washers for upwards of $400 and also get small electric ones for as low as $80. I understand that the big difference seems to be the pressure that each puts out (PSI) but that's all I understand.

Can I get a compressor so I can say attach a paint sprayer, a tire inflator and then attach a head so I can pressure wash? Or do I have to get a compressor for paint and air and then a pressure washer as well? I'm mostly interested in the washing part but would be nice to have an all in one solution if that is even available?

Here is what I want to do...wash the cars, RV, kids bikes, driveway, vinyl siding on the house and basic yardwork type of chores.

Please help me figure out what to buy?

Answer
If it were me... I'd go to the local rental equipment shop and ask the guy in charge of what he thinks. Why - because he would be the one very familiar with what you'd be looking for. As that's what he rents, and is very knowledgeable about.

What happened to electric cars like the one a neighbor drove back around 1960?

Sassy Sue

While watching "Who Killed the Electric Car?" I was jolted into remembering that when I was a kid, a neighbor had an electric car! It was small and different looking, but worked great. He was a big guy, but could fit at least 4 kids in w him, and it went as fast as other vehicles, and I know he took us at least 20 miles round-trip, no problem.

Answer
The technology at the time used heavy lead-acid batteries. A tankful of gasoline plus the tank itself, in an intermediate car, weighs perhaps 90 kg (200 pounds), and would fuel the car for perhaps 600 km (350 miles). Lead-acid batteries of the same weight might give a range of 30 km (20 miles). Electric cars extended the range by carrying as much as a tonne of batteries, adding weight also to the car to support the batteries.
You can still buy some electric cars or car kits such as the "Voltswagen". Mines use electric vehicles, some powered by Edison cells (iron-nickel alkaline) which have low energy density but a looong lifetime.

Now that I have your attention, I have a legit question. Why do people have children just to dump the child off in school once they turn 5 years old? We have these people making judgements about daycare, yet isn't school the same thing? Kids are in school for about the same amount of time. Just think we they get older and are involved in sports/band/choir/etc. How terrible that these children can't spend every second of everyday with their parents.
(note the sarcasm)
Kimberly, see where Isaid note the sarcasm?//I posted this because Ise daycae-bashing question every day. MY ids aren't in daycare but I know parents who have to put their kids in daycare. I've seen people say on here "Oh, those poor childrne have to be away from mommy 8 hours out of the day." Now remind me how many hours a child is in school? Isn't it 7 or 8. Then when they start with sports and then an after school job when they turn 15 or 16, that's even less time with mommy and daddy. Why don't these same people complain about this even though not sending your kid to school is illegal?

Answer
Like Ellie said, thank goodness you were being sarcastic, cause I was very tempted to give you a tongue lashing too! :)

I don't understand why either group, (the SAHM's or the working moms), feel it necessary to insult and put down others for the choice they have made. The comment that people have made, "Why have kids if you are going to have daycares raise the?" is just really rediculous! So basically, without just outright saying it, these people are saying that unless someone is financially able to stay at home with their children and not use a daycare or a private babysitter, then they don't deserve to be a parent. That is very judgemental and just plain hateful. Not every woman has the luxery of falling in love and marrying a man who makes $35-60,000 a year. I married one who only makes about $25,000 and brings home alot less after he pays child support on his children from his ex-wife and insurance premiums on all the kids. I don't think the fact that I didn't marry someone who made alot of money, means that I dont deserve to have children.

What about a woman who is widowed? My best friend was widowed with 2 young children, and had no choice but to work to support her kids. So I guess according to some of these women, she didn't deserve to have the kids, because she ended up having to put them in daycare. Point is, no woman, even these ones that are so freely judgeing working moms, know how their life will turn out and what might happen to them.

I don't know any woman who enjoys dropping her kids off at a daycare in the mornings, I certainly don't. But my husband and I live in an older house, and have had alot of things break, like our hot water heater, pipes, leaking roof. We have not had the money to repair these things outright, so we have had to charge them on a credit card. The motor on my car blew up and it cost over $2,000 to fix it, so again that went on the credit card. I was a SAHM for 18 months, and any unexpected large expense that came up, went on that cerdit card. So, I will be trying to pay all that off for years now. But it was either do that, or go without hot water, or no water, or have no vehicle. Which would have ended up hurting my kids more than me. So I did go back to work, and I do have to take my daughter to a babysitter during the day.

I do not live an extravagant life. I don't go shopping every month, I don't have a Coach purse, we don't have 4 wheelers or motor bikes, we don't go on vacations, we don't eat out every week, I don't buy new clothes for myself on even a monthly basis. If I have an extra money, from working over time or getting a bonus at work, I spend it on my husband or kids, not on myself. I took some extra money I had about 4 years ago, and bought my husband one of those $65.00 do-it-yourself outdoor pond kits, and some cheap 25 cent goldfish to go in it, and helped him make it, for fathers day, and I have had women on here tell me that was an expensive, frivolus expense and that is probably the reason I have to work, cause I am wasting money. I never knew buying my husband a fathers day gift would be considered "wasting money"!

If a mom chooses to work, because she does not want to stay at home at her childrens expense, then I don't think that makes her selfish at all. In fact I think it makes her a loving, wonderful mom. If choosing to stay at home, means that you and your husband have to stretch and skrimp so much with his paycheck, that you find yourself telling your kids "No, you can't have that, we can't afford it." or not taking them out to eat or to the movies occasionally (cause you have to pay the electric bill), not being able to buy them new clothes or toys occasionally (and I don't mean the cheap $2.00 toys at the Dollar Store that fall apart within 3 days) or you just simply have no extra money for "extras", then I do think that the mom staying at home ends up affecting the kids in a not so good way. Sure, they have mommy at home with them all the time, but if they never get the "little extras" that I know most kids would like to have and enjoy, then I think to alot of kids that is not worth it. I have seen stay at home moms, who have to skrimp and save so much that they can't even buy their kid Christmas presents or a Halloween costume. So, how is that fair to the kid?

I realize that not all daycares are great, but their are alot of women who do daycare out of their home. I found a wonderful older lady who watches kids out of her home. She is very inexpensive compaired to daycares, and my daughter learns alot from this woman. At only 2 she was talking as good as a 3 year old, was counting to 20 and could say spanish numbers too. This woman treats my daughter like she is her grandchild, and I never have to worry that she isn't getting wonderful care while I am at work. I don't go out with the girls after work or go shopping when I get off. I immediatly go get my daughter from this woman. I spend every single waking minute away from work with my kids. I do not go out, nor do I ever leave them with a sitter other than the hours I am at work. So I try to make the most of the time I am home with them.

You made a great comparrison, regardless of what others have told you. The moms who think it is better to be a stay at home mom when their kids are young, and who want to judge and insult the moms who use daycare, should homeschool their kids, if they truely feel being at home with them is better.

Female Dr.

I am trying to learn about Germany and am wondering what is the biggest hidden thing about the culture that no one knows, and what would I do to fit into the German culture, act like aa German etc.
I am trying to learn how to act like a native German, what are the norms that are known by only the natives?

Answer
Well, there are the cultural stereotypes and the cultural customs -- and of course, just like in the USA or UK, customs may have some radical differences depending on which region you're in. You're more likely to encounter these broad generalizations in Germany than wherever you are now, but they are not blanket truths.

If you want to pass for a German, you should:

-- Be conscious of your energy usage, and care about Efficiency. Turn off lights and keep doors closed in rooms when you are not using them. Pull the metal shade down over your windows when it's cold or cloudy or nighttime to keep the heat from escaping. Use the train or rideshare (carpool with paying passengers) instead of driving your car alone. Install solar panels on your roof, like your neighbors. Hang dry your clothes instead of tossing them in a (wasteful!) electric dryer.

-- Be timely, and expect others to be timely too. Fashionably late is not fashionable. Trains run on time. Tap your foot and get grumpy when the train pulls into the station 4 minutes after its scheduled/posted time.

-- In social situations, greet every person individually. For those you have not yet been introduced to, you are responsible for politely introducing yourself by saying your name and giving them a handshake. A general wave hello or goodbye to the group/room is impolite. When you leave, you should say individual goodbyes to each person. Even the people you didn't really talk to or spend much time with.

-- Be cynical when talking about politics and politicians. Be comfortable taking plainly, openly, and knowledgeably about your own personal finances and money. Be rather ignorant about religious customs outside your own or your own community, assume that the White people you interact with are all either Lutheran, Catholic, Atheist, or lapsed, but that they are all familiar with Christian holidays and traditions.

-- Don't get squeamish when you go to the spa/sauna or beach and all the men and women and children are walking around naked together, and not having any problems or displaying embarrassment/shame. Relax. See that your bodies are just as similar or different as your faces. Be comfortable with your body and nudity. And note that Speedo-style swimsuits (for men) is the typical alternative.

-- Don't wear baggy clothes or sweats unless you're actually going for a jog or to the gym or laying about in your own home. Germans may not generally wear flashy clothes like Italians or French, but they do take care with what they wear. White sneakers? No. Baggy pants than hang over their asses? No. Capris with socks and nice sandals? Yes. Hmm...

-- Prefer foreign movies and tv dubbed into German instead of subtitled.

-- Be hyper vigilant about sorting your trash and recycling. Return your bottles to the store. Keep your yard and garden tidy. Address people formally unless they have given you permission to use their first name and address them in the familiar. Don't be shy about demanding and expecting quality, returning things to the store, or approaching clerks and customer service folks about getting something your way -- it's not perceived as rude, but rather sensible.

-- Be comfortable eating bread and coldcuts, cheeses, and various spreads for breakfast and/or dinner. If you prefer cereal for breakfast, expect it to be chocolaty. Get used to eating pig, potatoes, cabbage, pasta, and mixing your beer with soda-pop (Radler, Diesel, etc.) Get excited about white asparagus coming into season, milky lattes in tall glasses, spicy Turkish fast food, and snail-shaped pastries. Feel comfortable drinking alcohol in public, at parks, with friends, on the subway, on the street, at the bar/pub/restaurant with your kids.

How much is Cost of Living Allowance in EdinBurgh, Scotland for a Family with 2 Kids?

andres bon

Hello, I would like to have an idea to assess how much will be the best offer, living decently and at least to have savings in Edinburgh, Scotland. I plan to take my wife and 2 kids with me.
I read that tax will be around 20%.
Can someone please help me lay out as follows? On a monthly basis.
Groceries, school bus, transportation (Bus), Utilities(water, electricity, etc.) , Education ( elementary and pre school), Gasoline, health care, dining out like 2x a month and any other cost I am not aware of in Edinburgh?
I know it is quite detailed, sorry.

Answer
I lived in Edinburgh. But only as a university student so my take on things will be slightly biased.

VAT (value added tax): 20% on most goods and services -- https://www.gov.uk/vat-rates
Groceries: I spent about 30 a week on myself. I do not eat meat or dairy but do eat a lot of fruit and fresh vegetables. So that would be 120 a week for one person.
School Bus: If you are from the states the school bus system is not the same. Kids are expected to make their own way to school by walking, driving, or taking the public bus. The bus each way is 70p for children.
Bus: You can buy one way fair for an adult for 1.50. A day ticket for 3.50. A week's unlimited pass for 17 (13 for uni student and 9 for children). A month's unlimited for 51 (40, 39). A year's for 612 (468,324). more information at: http://lothianbuses.com/timetables-tickets-maps/fares-and-tickets
Utilities: I was a student so I did not have to pay for water or council tax. but in a three person flat the gas/electric was about 60 pounds a month total (and their was a set payment. you you obviously used less in the summer and more than that amount in the winter but it evened out in the end).
education: free school and university-> (for those living in scotland for 4+ years). private schooling available. Most public and all private schools wear a uniform.
Gasonline: expensive. 3.65 per litre. use an automatic and only drive when needed as filling your car will probably cost 60 quid. http://www.indianagasprices.com/Edinburgh/index.aspx
health care: free as long as you are a resident. but you can pay for it if you want. www.bupa.co.uk
eating out: I was a student so i obviously ate cheap. But I would say a main at an average restaurant (not a pub meal) would be 15-20 pounds and a fiver for a drink. So one main, one appetizer, one drink each for two people would be about 65 pounds.

1970s progressive rock

Answer
Fields was a progressive rock band formed in 1971 by Andrew McCulloch and Graham Field, and also containing Alan Barry. McCulloch had previously been a member of King Crimson, but left due to musical differences. Field had founded Rare Bird, and Barry was a member of the Giles Brothers. They only recorded one eponymous album in 1971, and one single from the album, A Friend of Mine, in 1972. According to Field, CBS management changed and "the new faces did not want to know us", so the group disbanded. Field had the rights to the name Rare Bird, and returned to working in that area and in television themes. McCulloch went on to be part of Greenslade from their inception.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fields_%28Progressive_Rock_Band%29

Graham Field's website:

"After taking music at University I taught music in three south London schools before becoming so jealous of the creativity shown in such records as 'Lost That Loving Feeling' and 'Whiter Shade Of Pale' that I resigned, spent the summer writing some music that mixed classical music with rock, avoided the overused lead guitar, used the full dynamic range, and sounded a bit like a Rock Coronation! Amongst my longer, more overblown ideas was a little sad song called 'Sympathy'... inspired by a tramp who cleaned my car by mistake. I then advertised for fellow musical nutters, and met first Dave K, whose electric piano playing wowed me, and then some time later Steve G, whose voice I thought was amazing, and finally Mark, whose free drumming style seemed halfway between Rock and Zappa therefore just right. Breaking up after two years, a hit single that went to number one in France, Italy and all over the place, (and with 300 cover versions - and was World Publishing Hit 1970), and two progressive albums, was absolutely heartbreaking and was forced on us by contracts that would have kept us poor all our professional lives however big we had become.

I founded a new band, FIELDS, and secured a hefty advance from CBS. Musically the new band was very satisfying and continued the classical rock mix with a vegeance, but we never found a really good manager and a year after our first record almost everyone at CBS moved on..and the new faces didn't want to know us.. yesterday's news! However two of FIELDS tracks, "A Friend Of Mine" and "Over And Over Again", refused to lie down and die and have been featured on countless 70's compilations in Europe by such companies as BRMusic with such titles as 'Rock Giants' which is very flattering if not somewhat exaggerated!

Just after I got the big advance Steve and Dave approached me to let them use the name RARE BIRD which I owned. To be honest I knew there musical direction would be more "groove based" and therefore not at all what I had intended RARE BIRD to be..but I had just struck lucky with CBS and they were still looking and anyway were such great guys that I couldn't say anything but OK....go ahead.

I then wrote some TV themes ("Agony" Maureen Lipman's first series and a few other things), and arranged and produced a great early music folk album for Bob Pegg..and I am still proud of the sort of Early Music big band sound of that album. Then out of the blue I got offered the job of Music Officer for what was then the UK's leading Arts Centre South Hill Park in Berkshire. After 5 years there I was made Arts Officer for Epsom and got Epsom Playhouse built by the developers doing the new shopping mall there. I ran the Playhouse for a few years, and then went down to Dorset so that my kids (I've got 3 girls and 2 boys) could grow up in beautiful Dorset not dirty Battersea. I got the job of programming all the classical music and jazz and poetry at Poole Arts Centre and have been doing that for 20 years now. It takes up half the week, and I get to work regularly with the likes of Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinal, Chick Corea plus contemporary classical groups like the Composers Ensemble and all the best Early Music groups. To fill the other half of the week I run a small agency for classical musicians, jazz musicians, and poets. "

Answer
http://www.expatforum.com/articles/cost-of-living/cost-of-living-in-malaysia.html

Thats a good article on cost of living in that area...

It says the cost of living for a house is around 100 to 150 euros now based on your said income of 8500 ringgits = 1,697 euros you should be more than ok.

But according to this gentlman it would seem somewhat more expensive...Decent (furnished) condo in one of the Damansaras or such as TTDI/Sri Hartamas (per month):-
One-bedroomed : RM2,000 perhaps less.
3-4 bedroomed : RM3-4,000
Electricity : RM80-RM250 (depending on # of occupants)
Water/Indah Water : RM20-RM50
Gas : RM30-40
Eating out at local foodstalls : RM5-RM10 per person per meal
Eating out at western restaurants : RM25-RM100 per person per meal.
Draught beer in a pub : RM8-RM12 per mug (1/2 pint). Look for "happy hours"!
Premium cigarettes : RM9 per 20-box.
Taxis from the named suburbs to city centre : RM15-RM20 each way.
Car hire : RM120-RM150 per day (but much better rates for long term lease)
Petrol : RM1.80 per litre

I'd personally recommend you look around in TTDI, especially if your wife and daughter join you, as this is close by the huge shopping complexes of 1 Utama and Mutiara Damansara, which will be convenient for your wife (no need to go downtown for anything). There are also international schools in the vicinity, and it's generally quite a pleasant (green) and safe area where good English is spoken by almost 100% of the residents and shop/business keepers.
Many ex-pats incline to Mont Kiara, but this is rapidly becoming an oppressive concrete jungle.
There are usually units to rent in Villa Flora or Kiara Park at (fairly) reasonable rates, both of which are well-run, secure condominiums, and a few minutes from the Kenchala (sp) link, which will scoot you into and out of town.

Apparently its all about location...Well, if you don't really mind the inaccessibility to foreign grocers, pubs or a decent Montessori, I'd recommend, since your office is in KL, to stay in somewhere like Sentul or Gombak. You can get a decent 2-room apartment for about RM700. Electricity, let's just say you have no air-con but you have a computer, fridge, hot-water shower, electric kettle and iron, perhaps RM100. Food I don't know how to quote, but to get 3 decent meals a day (and I'm talking about keeping it about RM20 per person per day) it would cost about RM2000 for 3 people. The rest for transport it depends, you taking LRT, car, taxi or bus? Let's just say you take the LRT, I'd give it about RM100. Well, I guess all in all, to just survive decently, you'd need about RM3000 for you and your family.

http://board.classifieds1000.com/Malaysia/Expat/Living_in_Malaysia

Its a multi racial country. Living in the cities you get everything that Singapore has but less expensive. Living in smaller towns, its cheaper. Travelling from North to South by driving takes 7 hours via highways with tolls. Cost of living: Heavy Breakfast RM4.00, Heavy Lunch + Juice RM9.00, Heavy Tea time RM 4.00, Heavy Dinner + Juice RM 10.00 and Supper RM 5.00.
We Malaysian eat hell of a lot. There are stalls, shops everywhere and every time is food. Even McDonalds is 24/7.

Cities Rent a room Rm300 per month, towns RM300 the whole house. No guns, only the government has it and the underworld drug dealers. Death to all drug peddlers. You can't find gunshops and very limited shooting range. Even rich people can't get guns. Excellent schools and hospitals. English widely spoken. Imagine Malaysian nurses can easily migrate to Australia, just pass the IELTS tests. That's quality. Learn more for those interested. Especially the British, UK the senior citizen should just sell their London home and live in Malaysia. Small homes in London cost 1 million pounds that's RM 7 million. Can live like kings and queens with full servants in Kuala Lumpur, balance of monies put into unit trust. Australia to KL cheap flights coming very soon estimated RM 1, 200 return.
