Kenndy

Hi,
Is there a different between the two or they are the same type of car? Because when I google, I got hybrid electric car.
Thanks!

Answer
Most hybrid cars run on gasoline and electricity. The car runs on the electric motor while doing low speed and/or short-trip driving or when the car reaches cruising speed and the full power of the gasoline engine is not needed. The gasoline engine runs whenever more power is needed (e.g. running on the highway or merging in to traffic) or when the batteries need to be charged. In circumstances where an extreme amount of power is needed, like when going up steep hills, the gasoline and electric motors will work together.

On the other hand, electric cars have to be plugged in between trips and they run solely on batteries and an electric engine.

How is hybrid electric car easily renewed?

Answer
I t is the one of the mst biggest issues of us right now is global warming. Its effects on animals and on agriculture are indeed frightening, and the effects on the human population are even scarier. The facts about global warming are often debated in politics and the media, but, unfortunately, even if we disagree about the causes, global warming effects are real, global, and measurable. The causes are mainly from us, the human race, and the effects on us will be severe. There is many cause or global warming effects they arethe greenhouse is to protect the plants from pollution..
Warming of the Earth's surface and lower atmosphere caused by water vapour, carbon dioxide, and other trace gases in the atmosphere. Visible light from the Sun heats the Earth's surface. Part of this energy is radiated back into the atmosphere in the form of infrared radiation, much of which is absorbed by molecules of carbon dioxide and water vapour in the atmosphere and reradiated toward the surface as more heat. (Despite the name, the greenhouse effect is different from the warming in a greenhouse, where panes of glass allow the passage of visible light but hold heat inside the building by trapping warmed air.) The absorption of infrared radiation causes the Earth's surface and lower atmosphere to warm more than they otherwise would, making the Earth's surface habitable. An increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide caused by widespread combustion of fossil fuels may intensify the greenhouse effect and cause long-term climatic changes. Likewise, an increase in atmospheric concentrations of other trace greenhouse gases such as chlorofluorocarbons, nitrous oxide, and methane resulting from human activities may also intensify the greenhouse effect. From the beginning of the Industrial Revolution through the end of the 20th century, the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased 30 percnt and the amount of methane more than doubled. It is also estimated that the U.S. is responsible for about one-fifth of all human-produced greenhouse-gas emissions. Seealso global warming.

hi all,

i was having issues with starting my car (04 nissan sentra) and when i asked the question, i got back an answer that suggested leaving the key in the "on" position for a bit before starting the car and this seems to work. here are my questions:

1. why does my 3 year old car with about 58,000 miles on it need a fuel filter or even worse, a new fuel pump?
2. is this a common problem?
3. what can i do to lessen the wear on the fuel filter/pump?
4. is the fuel pump a costly repair?

i also linked my previous question:

http://tinyurl.com/29dzux

thanks!

Answer
I'm not sure I want to get on the fuel pump and filter wagon quite so fast. In my opinion your symptoms could be caused by a check valve if you have one. You see in 30 minutes of setting the pressure shouldn't bleed down to the point that it makes starting difficult. And, since it will start and run in a satisfactory fashion I have my doubts it is a filter. If you do have a check valve it is probably part of the pump and would require a pump replacement to correct the problem.

To answer your questions though.
1. An automobile component can fail at any time. It seems to me that the pump and associated components should last the life of the vehicle but so should the seat rails and I have seen failures there as well.

2. I don't have first hand knowledge of you vehicle so I can't really address the issue of how often your car would experience starting problems.

3. The best advice I can offer for keeping a fuel system health is to use a fuel injector cleaner in a tank of gas three or four times a year. Aside from that, purchasing clean fuel is a plus. However, knowing whether or not the fueling station is delivering clean fuel is virtually impossible.

4. Yes. Again, I can't address your car specifically but my son and I changed the fuel pump in his Dodge pickup. He bought a used pump for $100 and it took both of us about four hours to change it. Now we are shade tree mechanics and were working in the driveway of my home. I'm sure a shop could beat that time considerably but even if they cut it in half we saved $200 to $300 dollars in labor charges. His pump was in the gas tank. We had to drain the tank, remove it, change the pump and reinstall the tank. I don't know where your pump is located but I will assume that it is in the tank until I'm told differently.

If I were you, I would continue to turn the key, wait a few seconds and start the car. I would continue doing that as long as it worked. The only real down side to doing what I suggest is that if the pump is into a failure mode it could leave you stranded at any time. The pump is electric and I seriously doubt it would fail partially. I think it would simply quit. In other words IMO if it is working, it is working correctly.

I hope that helps you. I'm telling you exactly what I would tell my kids or do for myself so if I am wrong, I would be wrong on my own car too.

2 story house, separate a/c-heat each floor.?

Christy

Pretty sure my downstairs a/c unit is dying. Do I need to replace both downstairs a/c and heater at the same time? Also should I replace the units for the second floor at the same time also? In this economy with three kids trying to watch every penny I can and send wisely. Also what does ice on the lines on the outside unit mean? Had the freon checked in March and supposedly both units were fine. Thanks for any help.

Answer
Hi Christy
It is a good thing having a unit for the upstairs and a unit for the downstairs. It helps control each floor much better as less dense heated air rises causing the upstairs to need more air conditioning capacity in the summer and less heating capacity in the winter. as long as their are 2 thermostats each run independently of each other. This is great because you can concentrate on just the problem unit at hand.

Ice on the unit means it is freezing up. as to why a unit freezes up check here http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AkrnnDBpqKCoELqQbJRbMQrty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20110529074844AAhs60a generally you can check to make sure the filter is clean and the temperature is not set to cold and the rest is up to the tech.

That is great that you had the units checked in the spring! It is the best way to find problems before they occur. However sometimes things still happen and a leak can spring up.

As for your consideration for replacement...
how old is the unit? average life span is 15 years
Each system (if it has 2 independent thermostats) work separately of each other. so I would not worry about replacing the unit that is not causing problems.
If you do replace a unit replace the whole system of that unit. Furnace, coil, stat, lines, and condenser. The new units use the new refrigerant and are much more energy efficient. Some units have a tax rebate and even sometimes a electric company rebates for qualifying units.
Units efficiency is in SEER (seasonal Energy Efficiency Ration). it is like MPG on a car, the higher the number the less it cost to operate. Top brands are Lennox, Trane/American Standard and Carrier/Bryant. But more importantly than the brand is the quality of installation.
Use BBB to check the company's track record and look for a company that uses N.A.T.E certified technicians www.natex.org

If you have the room keep the old unit as sometimes parts from the old unit can be salvaged for repairs on the other unit you dint replace.

Other option is since you have 2 units you can just continue to repair them. The advantage is if one fails you will still have cooling/heating from the other unit so it will not be an emergency.

Also in the economy there are other things you can do to save money. You can use window int, blinds/ curtains in the summer to block out some heat. In summer set your thermostat to 78 and in the winter 68. Use fans only in the rooms that you are in to circulate air around you helping you feel cooler.
Good luck

when will the 2014 Nissan Leaf be available in Washington Sate?

best electric cars of 2014 image

John

I live in Washington State and heard that there is also a $7500 tax incentive credit and no sales tax. I make $40k/year and my credit line is above 800. An electric vehicle is ideal for me since I do a lot of city driving (around 40 - 50 miles/day). The Nissan Salesman told me over the phone it is better to do a 2 years lease at 261/month and $650 down for an S model. That way I will automatically get a $7500 tax incentive credit through Nissan and I will have a chance to buy it after the 2 years lease. I am planning on waiting until the 2014 model comes out and do a 2 years lease if what the salesman told me is true. I hope it will be available in June like most other Japanese makes would release their new models. Anyways any advices would be great. Thanks everyone.

Answer
I was just reading a new Nissan Technical publication on the LEAF go on-line "nissanusa.com" read all you can the 2014 all new LEAF is built in the USA now and has many features that are better than the previous version. I do not recommend the base model S with halogen lights and would buy a more optioned car with LED headlights and more cool options. Home charger is a cost and you will want to have one installed. Shop for home chargers from different suppliers call your electrical service provider get the best deal you can. As for lease only do lease if you can deduct car interest payments from your taxes. Buying a LEAF out right may be a better deal on a second generation car.

At year's end, which automobile offers the best gas mileage and the best all around deal?

Sara

I see so many advertisements for year-end deals on automobiles, zero-percent financing, cash back, five-star safety ratings, great gas mileage, and so on, and my head is spinning.

If I wanted to buy a small-to-midsize car with excellent gas mileage, good safety rating, and the most attractive financial deal out there, what kind of car should I be looking at?

All opinions are welcome; help me make sense of all these offers, please!

Answer
If you can get in a Toyota prius on the financial terms listed particularly zero percent financing, five star safety ratings and great gas mileage the Prius is the best bet. Everything has its downsides, Prius is not a snow car but it does fine in the winter.
Then Honda's Insight, its a great buy, but its not cute.
The Volkswagen Turbo Diesel powered engine cars.
If you can wait until January 2014 Mazda 6 is a stunner gas or diesel.
The 2012 Mazda3.

My guess is you are asking why. The Prius has been around for a decade, whatever was the problem should be none at this point. On a tank of gas the latest Prius has been known to get 1,200 miles on a tank of gas. Honda's Insight has a part time electric engine strategy, only when the car starts until 20 or 25 mph then the gas engine take over. Reportedly this car can roll somewhere in the neighborhood of 700-800 miles on a tank of gas.
VW Turbodiesel variety in the Passat and Beetle are good for 700 miles on a tank of gas and Diesel engines are notorious for 1 million miles.
The Mazda6 is mechanically a new car from scratch improving every mechanical bit that moves the car, nothing new, just lighter stronger and more capable. The brand calls this approach SkyActiv. Based on the reviews and pictures this is a gorgeous car that will be right up there with Volkswagen's mileage of 700 miles on a tank of gas.
The Mazda 3 is practical 400-540 miles on a tank of gas using the SkyActiv package really good value.

The reason I listed these cars, you have the best chance to get the most out of them while making payments and they have the best chance of reliable service life after the terms of your loan has been completed. The goal with any car buyer should be to pay the car off in order to have a perfectly working car well beyond the monthy payments. The two cars that show the most promise would be Toyota's Prius and Volkswagen's turbo diesel variety. Hopefully this will clear things up a bit.

Enjoy

Q. Since when have they been using electric cars? What did they end up doing with the gas cars?

Answer
>> How did China go about using Electric Cars?

You are mistaken. If you watch the olympics (NBC), you will see that Beijing pollution is so bad that they almost canceled the marathon run (for the fear of runners safety). And that is with the factories shut down and 1/2 cars grounded few weeks BEFORE and during the games.

If they have electric cars, it is more more than what we have here - a very small number.

Where can i buy a good gas rc car online?

Brian

I want a good rc car but dont want to spend more than 180. + is an electric car better than a gas car?

Answer
Unfortunately, there just isn't anything "good" in that price range. I'd love to find a brand new SLS class Mercedes for under $100K, but it isn't going to happen.

If you want a GOOD radio control model you are going to have to spend at least a little more money. For instance:
http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_44_1561_2575/products_id/251030/n/Traxxas-Bandit-Buggy-RTR-w-Waterproof-ESC-24GHz-Radio-Battery-Wall-Charger?utm_source=Google-Base&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Product-Feeds&source=google_ext&gclid=CO7lpfmX0rcCFSeCQgodiSgAHg

The Bandit is about as cheap an RC as I would recommend. This is the brushed version so it's quite a bit slower than the brushless version - which costs another $100 more.

Another option you have is to find something used on eBay. You should be able to find something fairly nice in your budget.

As far as which one is better, that is a matter of opinion. Electric is certainly a lot easier. Some people have a hard time tuning nitro two stroke motors.

I'm interested in purchasing a 2012 Honda CR-Z. However, I don't know anyone in my circle of friends or family who own an electric car, or even an electric-gasoline. I was wondering what it's like and what should I expect. Is charging the car going to raise my electric bill exponentially? Will I be able to just run the car on gas if needed? How and where will I be able to charge the battery? I would really appreciate anyone with an experience with one.

Answer
You need to know a bit more about such vehicles. There are battery electric cars like the Mitsubishi I MiEV, the Nissan Leaf and Tesla vehicles, the roadster, and the new model S. And then there are hybrids that can never be plugged in like most Toyota Prius, and your 2012 Honda CR-Z ( 1 ) and then there are cars that can be plugged in or use gasoline.

Only the battery electrics allow and require a different approach to charging the vehicle.2

How much should I ask for a electric club car golf cart?

Remmington

How much should I ask for for a gray electric club car? It has really nice wheels, a back seat that folds down and a whole light system installed. Just wondering what it would be worth.

Answer
This is all relevant to the year of the cart......also you have not mentioned if the batteries are in working condition. If you have good working batteries its one price and if you have new batteries its another usually at least a 500-700 dollar price difference. If you can include the items above the year and battery condition I can give you an accurate price for your golf cart. New, the Club Car goes arround 8000 and here I am talking about a 2012 Model. Also is this carts a 2 - 4 - 6 - 8 Passenger golf cart? That makes a very big difference as well in the price of a Club Car Golf Cart. The price I have quoted you for your Club Car is for a 2 Passenger Cart this link will help you with getting prices for your cart http://lsvcarts.com/clubcars.html

He has a wife/girlfriend.(She doesn't like me at all) He's probably in his mid late 20's-early 30's and I'm 15. One time, He looked at me and gave me a smirk( like he knew something). When I'm outside walking my dog and he's in his car, he'll wait till I get near my door or inside and drive away.(I'd hear his car drive away) he's done that about 3-4 times. The sims 4. what I think it should have?

Rachel

Aging, I think you should set their age in CAS ( for example, you put in 7 the child's height and face is set to the average 7 year old) Of course you can customize everything.
Height, I think that adults shouldn't have the same height neither should children. Maybe they could add a height slider to fix this.
RABBITHOLES, I personally HATE rabbitholes in the Sims 4 there should be NO rabbitholes.
More stuff for kids. The toddlers (2-3) and pre-schoolers (4-5) should have ABC books and special learning tools and toys and car seats . Young children (6-9) should have fun math books and activity pads, they should have room decor specific for their age group.
Tweens (10-12) should have special room decor, music players and cellphones. They should also be given more responsibility like chores..etc
Young teens (13-15) This one I find kind of funny but teen girls should have to buy pads/tampons for that time of the month, during this time of the month they will get moody..etc. They should have bean bag chairs, laptops, cellphones,Ipods and Special room decor.
Teens (16-18) High school students. should have the ability to tutor young teens for some extra simoleans, young teens and teens should have their OWN "wallet/bank/safe" so they can have their own simoleans, they should have cars and cellphones .....etc
Young adults (19-25) should be able to RENT apartments and houses. (I don't have much for them)
and I can't think of anything for the Adults
Elders (55+) should have Canes,Meds and electric scooters.
Holidays,I think it should have the Holidays like Halloween,Christmas,Easter .....etc
More Clothing, Maybe you can BUY clothing with simoleans I think that would be cool. :D
There should also be SPORTS like Gymnastics,Dance,Soccer,Basketball,Hockey,Baseball,Karate ....etc
and special outfits for each sports available for pre-school (4-5) through adults.

What do you want to be added?
I have more ideas but too many to share :)

Answer
I just want the glitches in the game gone. I am never going to buy another Sims game due to the glitches! I own the Sims 3 (Ambitions, Adventures, Night Life, and Generations Expansion Packs). I'm never going to buy another game ever, so if the Sims 4 comes out, totally not buying it. I'm content with what I have.

I don't mind rabbitholes for certain things. This is because when the kids are off to school, you don't have to keep pausing the game to ensure that everybody is doing something and not just sitting around.

Teens already do get moody in the Sims 3...

Toddlers should also be able to have more interations with objects. In the sims 2, they could get out of their cribs, pull bottles from other toddlers, and play with water on the ground by splashing.

Answer
Buy him a pocketbike. He will be the coolest kid on the streets with one of those. They sell gas which are fast ones for about $300 and electric ones which are a bit slower but still fast for about the same price. Try ebay or check if there is a local store that sells these.

What is a creditor on rental application?

blank

Is it only credit cards or car payments and things like that, or do your cable company and electric company count as creditors? We're applying for a new apartment and it has 8 lines for creditors on the application. I don't know what to put! Thanks!

Answer
Put the ones that are going to give you the best references. However, if you have something you know is delinquent (ex: An old electric bill you never paid and was turned over to collections) put that down. Honesty, goes a long way when your credit report is about to be pulled. Anyone who has turned you into any credit bureau may pull up... the list is extensive: Student loans, cars, mortgages, utilities, cell phones, prior rentals, dish network, credit cards, bank accounts... your first born (just kidding).

Answer
First thing we could do would be to talk about it, spread awareness, let people know that there is an issue which needs to be tackled before it turns into a crisis. You posing this question depicts that we (at least you) have got the first step right.

Let me first state that in my opinion, there is no out-of-the-box easy solution for this. The only answers are search for newer and non-traditional sources of energy like geothermal energy, tidal energy, solar energy, liquid hydrogen, garbage energy etc and exercise controlled and minimized use of non-replenishable sources of energy.

Here are a few suggestions-

1- Save oil!
Seen as a caption in many of the children's painting competitions- "Save Oil!" should be the motto of everyone around the planet. Personal automobiles should be used less. Public transport facilities should be ameliorated.

2- Go CFL!
Compact fluorescent light bulbs should replace the energy consuming electric bulbs. Likewise, age-old machines should make way for the modern energy efficient appliances.

3- Check vehicles!
What was the last time you neglected your bike/ car's poor average and mileage? Over-consumption should be kept under check by keeping your ride in good condition.

4- Search!
Search for new oil reserves might just buy us more time to think over and solve the impending crisis.

5- Fire and oil make a deadly combo...
Keep the oil refineries and reserves well protected from fire. Not only these accidental fires cause a loss of money and lives, they result in huge loss of the natural resources.

6- Encourage the solar cooker.
Don't mock the nuclear plant. It is a shy but bright kid. Kidding! Ok bad joke... I mean to say- we should slowly work towards establishing non-traditional sources of energy in our lifestyles. Nuclear energy still has a wide scope of application. Same with hydroelectric, solar, wind and other alternatives.

7- Turn off the lights, switch off the fans....
You're probably yawning reading this. This had been repeated so many times but still... you have to save energy in day-to-day affairs.

8- Spread awareness.
Yes, we need more campaigns. The chapters in our social-studies books have already told and retold us all these things but, there is a certain crowd that needs to be told about this in a more effective manner.

9- Smokeless and fuel efficient chulhas.
Here, in India, villages still rely on fuel wood and coal for their basic energy needs. The smokeless chulhas (stoves) go a long way in conserving wood from blind consumption.

10- Use Biogas.
We need more biogas plants. They, in my view, are the best and simplest alternatives in terms of energy cycling. Go biogas! So what if it doesn't smell like roses?

11- Population!
All these measures are of no or little use if the consumption still keeps growing. How about we put a check on population growth? We have been listening to this since the beginning! Do something! Take lessons from China!

12- Plant trees....
Again a well-known and over-discussed solution. We need more mass campaigns. More fuel wood trees and shrubs should be grown.

What do u think is going to happen in the next 10 years?

Powered exoskeletons may be seen on some construction sites in Japan and on the future battlefields of america's conquest choosing. We won't be going to mars for another 20 years hence. America will still be locked in the battle between red and blue. Dubstep will fall out of popularity and begin its long and sad spiral into only being played in the underground. Good riddance. Justin beiber will stop performing and live out the rest of his days in luxury. I myself am not a fan at all, but I don't hate the kid personally. Meanwhile, his fans will grow up and find themselves on their own musical journeys and start listening to other kinds of music that they were once hostile and averse towards. I think its a reasonable assumption. I don't think there is going to be any total war this century. Youtube might even fall out of favor and be replaced by something else. I can't imagine thugs on the streets driving around in electric cars. They predict that the economy may take another plunge and so things are fixing to get worse. China is a couple of inches away from complete societal upheaval. Russia is limping into the new world and may find itself again feeling like they have accomplished something good with themselves governmentaly speaking yet again. A glorious societal rainbow of cultural goodness, if you count that rainbow as red, powder blue and white. Tibet will still be under Chinese rule. South park and My little pony will be on reruns long before the end of the next decade.
Rail guns may be seen on american ships capable of lobbing projectiles up to 400 miles away at supersonic speeds. The ISS may have lives out its operational life span and be de-orbitted. Israelites may have developed better anti theater ballistic missile technology than they have today.

Is it worth the extra money to stay inside Disney World?

Gordon Str

We're trying to decide whether it's worth the extra money to stay in a Disney "Hotel" (specifically the Fort Wilderness Cabins) versus a nearby non-Disney hotel outside the park. From what I can tell, the Disney hotel seems to be about twice as expensive ($300 a night for the family versus $150 for the non-Disney location). Do folks think it is worth the extra money to stay in the Park? We have kids who are 5, 3, and 1 years old.

Answer
I am planning my vacation for May '09 and will be staying in the Cabins. I have stayed in them before once when I was younger, but my family owns a motorhome so we have always camped since then. This will be my hubby's first time in the cabins and I know he will enjoy it, though we've camped 2x since we were married and knows what to expect with the campground.

Now, because I have always stayed on property, I of course think it is better, but I will try and give you a few reasons.
-- travelling back and forth to the parks will be time consuming and unless there is a free shutttle, or you are driving your own vehicle will quickly add up
-- after a long day traipsing through the parks you will still have to get your bone tired children back to their hotel, juggling packages, strollers, diaper/bookbags etc
-- you do not get the benefits of staying on WDW property

BENEFITS OF STAYING ON WDW PROPERTY
-- free WDW transportation to all theme parks (from Ft. Wilderness hop a boat for about a 15 min ride to Magic Kingdom, or bus to any of the other parks or waterparks).
-- You only have about a 20 min ride at most from any given park back to your hotel/cabin
-- Anything you buy can be delivered (free) back to your hotel (trading post at Ft. Wilderness) so you do not have to lug purchases around all day with you.
-- On site guests get to participate in Extra Magic Hours which are extended hours either early in the morning or after the park closes, so only guests staying on WDW property are allowed in the park, all others must exit. They check this by distributing wristbands... no wristband, no riding.

CABIN/FORT WILDERNESS BENEFITS
-- Cabins have a full kitchen, so if you are driving or are interested in renting a cab/rental car you can run to an off-site store and do grocery shopping
-- Because of the close proximity and free WDW transportation you can return back to the cabin for lunch, a nap and dinner, eat the food you bought at the store and drastically save $$ by not having to eat in the parks
-- The campground has 2 pools, pony rides, a petting zoo, free nightly Disney movie with campfire and a great view of the Electric Lights Parade (which can also be seen from Polynesian, Lodge and Contemporary, and we've caught it while waiting for a boat to return back from Magic Kingdom).

So, I agree with you about the cabins, for a slightly cheaper but still outdoorsy feel consider the Wilderness Lodge. It is slightly cheaper, still utilizes the boat to the Magic Kingdom and bus to others. If you solely intend to just sleep there, then go with a Value Resort (All-Star Movies, Music, Sports or Pop Century).

I would check out www.allears.net This site will give you more information than you can possibly need regarding rides, resorts, and restaurants. The restaurant section will have menus, prices and kids menus if available with prices. You will probably not want to commute all the way back to your off-site hotel for lunch and dinner. The campground is a quick trip, and with the full kitchen you can have some sandwiches, the little ones can nap and then you are back to it.

Another great reference is Birnbaum's Guide to WDW. The '09 edition comes out the end of Sept.

edit- on-site Disney guests get to use the free Disney shuttle from the airport to their hotel. You can find more info about that on-line it is called "Magical Express."

What environmentally friendly habits have you started since you had children?

Q. This question has everything to do with newborns and babies, doesn't it? I mean.. now that we have children.. we should all be more conscious of what we are doing to save the planet in preparation for our children growing up. I have several things going.. such as using canvas bags for grocery shopping, recycling, etc. What are you doing to be more "green" .. I'd love more ideas. ;-)

Answer
I am guilty as charged for using disposable diapers. So, I feel like a hypocrite for answering this question, but...

I'm not a total pig. I use the canvas bags. I walk as often as possible, which isn't always a choice since I don't have my own car. I've always separated my trash and recycled.

I keep my consumption waaaaay down- water, electric, heating etc.. I don't buy things I don't need, and I buy a lot of things used. Cuts way down on trash. I don't bathe my kids constantly, or myself...every other day for me; every 3-4 days for kids. Overbathing wastes a TON of water.

Two summers ago, my 6-year old and I started a compost pile, and use it to fertilize our garden. The most important contribution I feel we can make is to teach these earth-friendly habits to our children, by example set in our own actions.

EDIT- forgot to add, breastfeeding : )

What will happen if I polish my car too often?

Are there any difference between car polish and car wax?
Any disadvantages when i polish/waxing my car too often?
Polish or wax is better?

Answer
Car polish is used before you apply the wax coat. It is used to remove grease, dirt, scrapes, and scratches that cannot be removed from washing. This is a type of car wax prep and car detailing product. Polish comes in the form of creams, sprays and liquids and contains solvents that will remove impurities to allow the paint to shine through.

Polishes are different from waxes as the polish will remove dirt but will not provide any protection. It is used before waxing and you want to use a pretty large amount of polish on a cloth. You want to polish using a circular movement or you can even use an electric car polisher. You do need to be careful, because if you polish too much, then you may take off too much paint and expose the primer or undercoat.

Car wax is used after washing and polishing to add a layer of shine to the car as well as a layer of protection. It is a type of paint sealant. If there is any dirt or stains on the paint, then the wax will seal it on the car. Wax will protect your car from UV rays and will prevent pollution and other dust from damaging your car. It also minimizes the moisture that comes into contact with the paint, as water causes corrosion.

Many people feel that waxing can damage the car but not if you use a good quality wax that contains natural ingredients. Using wax will actually increase your carâs life and can be very beneficial. You can apply car wax very fast and there are many different brands and forms of wax. You do not want to apply a lot of wax as too much can actually damage the paint. It is best to apply a thin, even layer using a sponge or soft cloth.

Why do I have swirls after polishing and waxing my car?

airforcewo

I have a black sedan that I washed, polished, and waxed this weekend. This was the first time I ever polished and waxed it. But after buffing out the wax, I saw swirls that I could not buff out. Do you know how I can get rid of this? I am more concerned about protecting my car from the elements over looks, but I would still like to get these swirls out if possible. Thanks.

Answer
Clear coat does need wax contrary to another answer.
Did you wash it with a good quality car soap first. Waxing over dirt / road grime will scratch the finish.
You mentioned buffing out the wax, did you use and electric buffer, or orbital polisher? You shouldn't be using anything but a wax applicator and a towel to apply, & remove the wax.
If the paint has heavy contaminants washing will not remove them. It needs to be buffed and is a process better left to a pro, especially on a black car. You might need to have it done now anyway to remove the swirl marks. Meguires # 7 is a great product for any color but really works wonders on black. Then use a good quality wax that promotes water to sheet off, not bead up. Beads of water act like little magnifying glasses, and burn the paint with sunlight.

why did my adapter melt. i was charging one of those kids drivable things and the adapter caught fire and melted what caused this? was it the wrong adapter?
the letters on the adapter are also melted off so i cant check the voltage or anything sorry

Answer
If it's not the original charger it may be charging incorrectly or even have the wrong polarity. If it's the charger that came with the child's electric car then there are two reasons, the charger is faulty or there is an electrical problem with the Power Wheels car. If it's within the warranty I'd contract the manufacturer to locate a place to repair.

Bought faulty car off eBay. Do I have rights?

J*M*H

Last Monday I bought a car off eBay that I thought was going to be a good deal. I got it for £850, and it came with 12 months MOT, but no Tax. It's a Fiat Stilo. This is the advertisement (copied and pasted) -
02 Plate Fiat Stilo 1242cc 16valve

One owner from new, in good condition inside and out for an 8year old car
(Dint on front passenger door & scratch on drivers side as pictured, not major)
Just had water pump and timing belt kit
12 Months MOT
No tax
Drives like new
Electric windows
Central locking on key

No PX
I am open to offers
Cash on collection only

Here's the problem, when I started to drive the car back, I noticed there was something dodgy about the clutch. As I was changing gear it started over revving, so the clutch was slipping. I also noticed that the steering wheel was making a funny 'clangging' noise when I turned the wheel.

We took the car down to the motor garage the next day, and he confirmed that the clutch is going and it definately needs replacing. I've had this confirmed by one more garage and a mechanic friend. We also found out (when giving it a service) that the reason the clutch was slipping was and knackered was because the gear shaft was coated in oil, probably because the gaskets gone and pouring oil out!

The other problem is that the back passenger door on the drivers side doesn't lock properly! If I manually push the catch down when it's open, it doesn't lock. I can literally push the catch open with my fingers. Which would explain why the door flew open when driving yesterday - whilst my kids were in the back!!!

What I want to know is -

Can I make the guy pay for the repairs to the car? Since it's not very drivable, and he stated 'Drives Like New'?!

Also, should the car have passed it's MOT with the door being like that?

The guy says it drove perfectly for him, but I can't believe that as it is noticeable!

Thanks

Answer
In the £850 market you have just learned that you need to test drive first. I bought a £950 car last week, I even put £5 of petrol in it to give it a decent test drive. Found lots of faults not mentioned in the advert, thankfully all minor and now mostly fixed for a few quid. Cars at that age an mileage all have problems, you need to find the ones where the worst problems not mentioned, though numerous are like my car, CD player, remote, interior lights, brake light, cruise and air con all broken and not mentioned in the advert. Mechanically though it really is good as new and that is what matters at that price. Sorry but it's a tricky market, learn, pass the car off to the next mug who hasn't learned and get a true bargain banger.

Is it possible to have a manual transmission in an electric car?

I know that electric cars don't need a transmission at all, but that would take a lot of the fun out of driving it. Would it be possible to have a manual transmission in an electric car?

Answer
It is possible to as you said, make an electric car without a transmission. Perhaps the best configuration for this is a 4 wheel drive electric vehicle with hub motors. But with even one motor a transmission is not required.

However most conversions from an internal combustion engine to an electric motor will keep the transmission and rear axle. Although this adds a lot of unnecessary weight is makes the conversion process a lot easier. Manual transmissions may even keep their clutch but it may not be necessary or desirable to use it.

I usually drive an automatic transmission but for the last week I was in rural Georgia driving a Mazda Miata (1) on country roads. It was a fun car to drive. I enjoyed the manual transmission and steering for this small car. But back in a big northeastern city, traffic, snow, and just needing to get where I am going easily makes me grateful for the simplicity of an automatic.

Electric cars will not initially be for everyone. They may offer the most advantages for commuters who have a garage or other place to charge them. But in an interesting development, electric vehicles are being offered to niche markets at first: You have the NEV (2), the neighborhood electric vehicle for that quiet little vehicle that can give you a short hop with little fuss and no fuel. Then there is the much publicized Tesla Roadster (3) that has a two speed transmission. And last is another unique "commuter" vehicle, the Tango, (4) this is among a new class of vehicle that has been called "Narrow track vehicles" (5: interesting viewing) This last video suggests vehicles that might be considered fun to drive with or without a transmission.

What kind of engineers design electric cars?

Joseph

I'm looking for my major in engineering for sure, I'm just not sure where I want to go into it. I'm really interested in electric cars but I'm just not sure which category of engineering it falls under.

Answer
car design will mostly fall under mechanical. it took more then a certain type of engineer to design the electric car. you can help build it if your a mechanical, electrical or probably some other type of engineer related in the field.

I'm asking this because I was taking a pre-reg math class (not going back to school until fall '12). I went on this one site and it said that on average it takes 10-15 hours to finish homework problems in an engineering field. I was interested in computer science, but am now more interested in EE.

Best answer 10 points.

Answer
It is easy. Recently graduated high school kids do it all the time. There are hard schools and easy schools. Once you have a EE degree you are one, regardless of what school you got it from. It can be done in 4 years, or less if you want to go to summer school. Getting a EE degree can cost you as little as $8,000 per year (http://www.pcci.edu/). Getting an EE degree online is also soon to become a reality, which could further reduce your cost, and working at your own pace has some advantages. I spent about 2 hours homework for each class hour I attended at Purdue University. Getting a EE degree is about assimilating the necessary amount of Information. It is something you do, not the instructor. You can get the understanding of the information on your own, from the internet, books, and doing experiments to check your understanding of what you have assimilated. School are to assist you in doing this. It is the understanding of the subject, that you have in your head, that is your tool kit to work as a EE, solving the worlds problems, one at a time, for the rest of your lifetime. It is a fun and rewarding career. I am having fun working on putting an electric cars motors, in the wheels.

How familiar are you with using solar electricity to power a residential house?

skattered0

I was wondering how much the average person knows about using the suns energy to power the average residential home...

Do you know of any countries that already use the sun to power homes?

please tell me where you are from as well please...

thankyou!

Answer
Hey 0077, to answer your primary question, I am quite familiar with solar power. We've been powering our home from the wind and sun for 11 years now, and for the last 5 or 6 years, we've been going into the local schools and doing seminars on the subject. In some cases, the schools have loaded a bus with kids and brought them out to our home to see it first hand. As for your second question, the average homeowner knows about as much about solar power as they do about the furnace in their basement. Unfortunately, this is where the technology has fallen down. Lots of people want to build a new home, and talk to the builder about solar power. Frequently they are told, "Solar doesn't work," or, "Solar is prohibitively expensive." Generally this is all they need to hear, and the panels are taken off the house plan.

Solar is not for everyone, or everyplace. Just because a home has solar panels does not mean they don't have an electric bill, and that says nothing to the fact that a stand alone solar home that does not have access to utility power has to live with a finite amount of electricity. What do they do on a cloudy week? Most stand alone homes, like ours was, use both wind and solar. The reason for this is that the two compliment each other quite well. In the summer, we have long sunny days, but little wind. In the fall and winter, we have short cloudy days, and high winds. When you have a shortage of one, there is generally a surplus of the other. Trying to decide between the two technologies is like trying to decide between a 3 passenger pickup truck and an 8 passenger van as your sole family car. Each has its advantages, but it probably makes sense for a two car family to have one of each.

There is also the fact that lots of people like to grow their own tomatoes, even if it is cheaper to buy them at the market. They have to learn all about watering, bugs, soil ph and weeding. People who live in a solar powered home have a similar curse, they can tell you just how much sun shined last November, and how much power the stereo uses down to the last watthour. Any self respecting homeowner wouldn't bother with the solar power, or the tomatoes, they would simply buy vegetables at the store, and electricity from the power company, and then sit home and complain about the price and quality of each. That used to be me, now I'm the other guy.

So no, the average homeowner does not know much about solar power, or furnaces. Most homes have furnaces, not many have solar panels. I wish they had both. In the 11 years we have had both, I can tell you that once solar power is installed, it is generally care free. We are on our third wind turbine here, and even though the last one is working better than the first two, it has had its moments. It has shut down 3 times, and had to be repaired twice. In all that time, my first solar panel has continued to make electricity, and I've never turned a screw on it or added a drop of oil. Yet, everyone I talk to about renewable energy wants to learn more about wind turbines it seems. They are neat, they move, they seem to have their own personality. They just require tall towers and routine maintenance. So does a car, and almost everyone has one of those too.

Many countries use solar power, almost all of them in fact, you just never hear about it, or see the panels in service. In the US alone there are over 100,000 homes and businesses using some level of solar power right now to operate at least some of their loads. That number is getting bigger as you read this by the way. I'll list some sources you can check out below if you want to learn more. Take care 0077, Rudydoo

Advantages and disadvantages of lithium-ion batteries for energy storage?

Anyone know what the advantages/disadvantages are for lithium-ion batteries other than their costs? I heard they are probably the best option for electric cars, why is that? Why aren't they viable for off-grid storage? Just the costs?

Thanks!!
Also need information on flow batteries. Other than low-energy density and the inability to scale-up what are the disadvantages of flow batteries? Advantages?

Answer
"Just the costs" ???? Obviously, you have never learned about the time value of money. Try researching Internal Rate of Return and Net Present Value. The costs are a big deal. Lithium Ion may be the best battery technology that we have but there are many problems. They are tricky and dangerous to charge and discharge. Their capacity degrades almost immediately, they degrade the fastest when completely charged or completely discharged hence they are stored at 50% for shipping. Their volumetric energy may be the best for batteries but is still very low. They can only discharge at certain rates. Charging batteries is a little like warming up a frozen steak to room temperature, at first the changes occur quickly but as you approach your target, the rate slows down even though you may be putting the same amount of energy into it.

Ultimately, a battery is just a way of chemically storing energy. Well, so are gasoline and diesel, indeed these are stored solar energy. Unlike batteries, gasoline and diesel are energy dense, and do not self drain over time ( though gasoline will separate into varnishes ). We also know how to efficiently synthesize hydrocarbons from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gases in exothermic Fischer Tropsch reactions and have done so on national scales. WWII Germany fueled their planes and Embargoed South Africa fueled their trucks this way. The US currently dilutes it's high sulfur diesel with synthetic diesel to meet federal ultra low sulfur diesel requirements, yes this doubled the price of diesel overnight when the legislation passed in the 90's. Canada's tarsands are gasified into syngas and the synthesized into a synthetic crude. We can get the syngas from gasification of coal, natural gas, tarsands, biomass such as trash and dried sewage or even directly from CO2 and H2O if we use an energy source. We basically know how to "charge" CO2 and H2O back into gasoline and diesel and we can and have done so efficiently. It's just that storing energy ourselves doesn't compete with the energy that nature has stored for us. However, it does mean we can do better than lithium-ion batteries just by synthesizing our fuel and using existing vehicles and fuel delivery infrastructure. EV's with lithium-ion batteries are just green washing to sell new cars.

Synthetic fuels from the gasification of biomass can also produce charcoal which when used as biochar sequesters carbon from the environment. Our existing gasoline vehicles can remove CO2 from the atmosphere with carbon negative synthetic fuels. An electric car can not do that.

Would you spend more for an electric car, and how much more?

greg w

If there was a nearly perfect electric car, with all the comforts you're used to, unlimited range through fast charging (comparable to gas filling), acceleration as good or better as your current car, the whole works.

Would you pay 5% more for the car, or would you buy a car where the savings in fuel has a 5 year payoff?

What's your money stance on this issue, given perfectly equal performance.

Answer
To calculate what would be the % premium to pay for an electric car over a gas car, I'd take 1 - [PV([total cost of ownership of electric car over 5 years]-[est. residual value at the end of the 5 years])]/[PV([total cost of ownership of gas car over 5 years]-[est. residual value at the end of the 5 years])]. This would be assuming you pay for the car in cash up front.

A 5 year payoff is way too long since people don't keep cars for very long anymore. Also, it would be hard to convince a lot of people to opt for that considering the emotional reaction to the sticker price and factoring in opportunity cost and the time-value of money.

The problem right now is that there is such a wide gap in performance/convenience for an electric car vs. a gas car, and its hard to justify even paying the same price, much less a premium.

How to fix garage door that suddenly stops be itself?

My garage door would stop by itself. And when i push the remote control, it would comtinue to close. Before, if i push the remote button twice, the door would reverse in the direction it was going. So it is probaly not the remote. Any ideas??
I read about that from the other posts. I'll try that first and see if that fixes the problem. And FYI, I only bought the place brand new about 9 months ago.

Answer
The opener stopping is a sign of the motor being overloaded / safety switches stopping the door. This may be from the door itself being out of adjustment / broke OR the opener needing adjustment. You should NOT "just" adjust the opener!!

First, pull the safety disconnect rope on the opener. This will disconnect the opener from the door. Then check the door. It should roll up & down smoothly. It should NOT be too heavy or so light the it pulls itself up. It should stay where ever you stop moving it. It rolling up or down, by it's self means it's not adjusted right. You could have a broken counterweight spring. Garage doors are HEAVY. It may be as little as a 100 lbs or as much as 300-400 lbs. The counter weight springs allow the door to be feather weight. Some have one, others have two springs. A broken spring WILL burn up the door opener.

The hinges / rollers need to be loose (lubricated). The rollers to track does NOT need to be lubricated. The roller should ROLL in the track. They do NOT slide in the track. ( Do you grease your car tires, to get them to roll better????!!)

If you have solid (wood) weather stripping, does the door have a slight gap, when you push the door IN, when it's down? If the door is tight against solid weather stripping, it will could have too much friction (door out of adjustment / hinges / rollers worn). If you have any type of weatherstripping with a flexible (rubber) edge, it should be it good condition. Rips could cause excessive friction. Stick a butter knife in between the door & weatherstripping and pull it out a bit. You should a good bit of gap between the door & the solid part of the weather stripping.

If the door seems OK, check the opener. It should still be disconnected.

For any kind, other than a gear drive ( chain / cable, both visible on the outer sides of the track), there is a two piece "trolley". One part is attached to the opener, the other to the door. When you hit the button, the trolley should run from one end to the other, then stop. If it doesn't make it all the way, you have a problem with the opener. It should run back & forth just fine.

If you have a gear drive (you can tell a gear drive by looking straight up, into the track, you will see a long gear or screw from one end, to the other), the opener should work, as above, but it may take a minute, before it shuts off. It will have a one piece trolley. It uses the door trolley to trip the off (limit) switches, no door, it will shut off after a time limit.

Most openers have safety switches on them. These are two photo electric "eyes" down low, near the floor. There is a "sender" & "receiver". The sender light should always be on, the receiver light will be off, if something is blocking the door. The receiver should be pointing either east or north, the sun can burn them up. If the receiver does not pick up the light from the sender, the opener will NOT go down. It thinks you or your kid is under the door. Most eyes should have LED lights on them. If one is off, they are out of whack. You need to turn one or both, until both LED's are on. If you can not get both on or if both are off, you have bad wiring / photo eyes / opener control circuit board. Spider cobwebs / cobwebs with leaves, etc, can be an issue.

Now, if all seems well, adjust the opener. Some have one adjustment, some two. ALL have separate adjustments for up & down. For two adjustments, there is a "force" with controls how HARD it pushes before stopping / reversing. The other is a "limit", which is how FAR it pushes, before stopping. You should ALWAYS adjust the limit, before the force. This is to keep you kids hand from being crushed under the door. (also, the track should NOT bow way up, just a little). A 2 x 4 under the door should trip it back up.

Mr. Predic

First CHANGE a few laws: Allow ANYONE to drive electric operated vehicles such as Golf-Carts drive on roads with speed limits on 35 mph and under.

Simple licence changes with Insurance changes.

SHORTS trips 2-4 miles represent 79% of ALL fuel usage in America (Car & Driver Mag March 2007) Grocery, Pharmacy, doctor get a pack of smokes etc.

A decent Golf cart $2800

I have a golf cart that goes 40 mph...I drive it everywhere and love it. If it rains I pop a roof with doors on it.....I love it.

I estimate it cost me around .49 cents for a full charge.

I do use it on the course and drive to the country club everyday with it...we go to lunch in .....hell everything!

I use it to go to the barn to feed our horses, we have 2 ponds and one lake we drive out to each evening to feed the fish.

what do you think?

if you have an objection....I'll answer you right back

oh....the bastar*s would be getting billion in taxes from fuel tax...lol
Charlie, Yes I have a solar charger...it takes a full day though
OneT...well yes, I live in west Texas..near Shamrock Tx. But you foks in the city couldbenifit from this...NOT all the time....just the short trips

Answer
Good plan - keep driving your golf cart, I think if it works for you that's great.

It's not going to work for a lot of us though. I drive to the grocery store, Target, pre-school, and random other errands. I make about 5 trips out a week if that. All of my errands require me to drive on a road with a 50 mph speed limit with a car seat in the back seat. I haul a lot of stuff too. So I'll be keeping my 7 seater SUV with a V8 engine (for hauling the camper, the other use for my car).
But you should absolutely drive whatever you want to drive. Just don't ask that I give up what I want to drive.

Edit - Wow Danielle, please tell me you are joking. So every Monday when it's negative 5 degrees I have to walk or ride my bike in the snow down to the store if I need something? What if my kid gets sick? Do emergency services still get to operate? That's almost as good as this great idea I had when I was 6 for a whole new economy - my parents called it the "penny economy" but I later realized I had just come up with a slightly less realistic theory than communism.

Edit2 - I see you live in Texas. I used to live in Arkansas so I'm familiar with the type of climate you live in. I live in Colorado now - different climate, very different landscape. Come to Colorado for a winter and you won't be thinking too highly of driving a gold cart around :)

What is your opinion about the following situations?

Classof201

Situation 1

20 years old
High School Drop Out
Never attended college
4 children (almost 3, almost 2, 2 day old Twins)
3 baby daddies
married for 2.5 years (is not the father of any of their children)
Receives food stamps/cash assistance/wic/low income housing/low income daycare/help with electric
Doesnt work
Oldest daughter is not potty trained (has not even started working with her)
Gives her children to anybody who will take them
Has to be out of her low income 2 bedroom apartment because she has to many children
Has a five seat car with six people
cant afford diapers and stuff before she had the twins

Situation 2

18 years old
High School Graduate
Full time College Student
1 child (almost 2)
1 baby daddy
engaged for 3 years with baby daddy
Receives Wic
works full time
her daughter is almost completely potty trained (just accidents at night)
daughter is with her if she is not at work or school
her fiance and her bought their first home (4 bedroom house/finished basement)
Just got a new car which is a 8 seater
buys everything on their own

what do you think about both situations?
and if you HAD to be one of them which one would you be?
Im friends with both of them, btw they do get along they have been friends since they were in grade school
#2 does not have two children (her daughter is almost 2)
and she started working towards the end of last year she was a full time mom to her daughter before then
STOP referring to me I am friends with both of them, we have been friends with grade school. We call each other sisters
#2, they have already got their marriage license their wedding is january 28th 2012, they just bought the house everything was final on the fifth, they are still moving into the house. and the reason they bought the bigger car is because she does have #1 kids and her fiances sisters son a lot on the weekends so she needs the room for the car seats.

also #2 works full-time at a daycare in the toddler room so her daughter goes to that day care and her mom is in the room where she is
@smalltown, she recieves wic because she recieved it when she was pregnant, when she goes back she is telling them that she dont need it anymore (but they wont qualify because her fiance makes to much money), before they got their own place the wic went by just her income and she didnt make enough by herself so she qaulified but now they will go by both income and its to much money
@sugar and spice, somebody said something about being a full time student and working full time she nevers get time with her daughter but she works with her daughter so she does, and no the difference between you and her is that her oldest is still in diapers, meanwhile she tells her mom that she needs to go pee but her mom just ignores her so she is ready and also your daughter doesnt still drink from a bottle like all her kids do

Answer
Situation 1: Well, at least she's married but the fact that he's not the father of even the twins means that I'm not going to approve of the sex outside of marriage. Maybe she's cleaned up that act. As far as potty training goes, many kids don't get potty trained until 4+ these days, and unless I could prove she hasn't started then I wouldn't judge that they haven't started. I would rather her be home with her kids with assistance that I'm helping to pay for than use daycare.

Situation 2: Horrible that she's been engaged for 3 years, that means they got engaged at 15 and it just is far too early to be engaged. The fact they've been engaged for 3 years but still not married bodes badly as well. That they are living together and having a baby before getting married also bodes badly in the long-term. That she got pregnant at 16 makes me wonder if they really were engaged or just using that as an excuse to have sex. Glad that they're going to school, makes me cringe that they bought a home before getting married, makes me cringe that they bought a new car before getting married, makes me cringe that she probably is using daycare a lot rather than not buying these things and living more frugally (she doesn't need an 8 seater car for instance) so she can work less and stay home with her daughter.

If I had to be one of them, I would pick... the girl who didn't have sex before she was ready to commit legally to the guy. So probably situation 2, but minus the baby, the living with him, and all of that. It had potential, but she dropped the ball. If for some reason he raped her, then there's no choice in the matter and I would probably situation 2, but minus him, and possibly adopted the little one out. Situation 1 is less desirable only because of cheating on her husband she had to have done twice.

See here's the thing. You ALWAYS have a choice to not be in either of those situations.

There is a book called electricity for fuel that sells for like $70 bucks online and they claim that it will show you an easy way to convert any car to electric on a $600 budget. Sounds like BS to me. Anybody know anything about this?

Answer
Sure but not for 600. Batteries are not that bad if you import like I did. 20 sets of li-ions with shipping from china for 7000 that's 350 a set. so far I built 2 getting ready to built 2 more for the kids as soon as they realize you can't convert a hummer 2, weight is an issue with EV's.
try here the have everything you need plus books and video's for a reasonable price.

I have 2 I built myself, 1 is an 87 Omni the wife's grocery getter, It's a single speed with a top end about 70mph but most efficient at 35. Mine is an 86 Fiero, I built it as a performance car, it has twin Solectra AC55 motors and controllers each run through 5 speed Getrag transaxils. The rear is the Fiero's the front however came from a Cavalier RS. The Fiero does the 1/4 mile in 9.9 seconds about 6 times on a full charge. And I could probably get that down to low 9's or even upper 8's when I change the training gears and adjust ratio's.

both of these cars are good weather only, spring summer and fall. there is no longer a heater or ac. still has wipers for rain but that's all. Rack and pinion - power stearing was stripped down and rebuilt to manual now. no power anything. they both where around 2600# when I started and after stripping them down, some welding for battery cradles and building back up as an EV there now around 2100# which is still a little heavy for an EV to have good range. I know for a fact the omni can go 103 miles on a charge and still had some left over.

What Christmas gift can I give to my little niece?

Sophia

My little cute niece is three years old and she is really a little adventurer. She is interested in almost everything. I want to give her a special gift which can help her to explore her little world (in the yard) but it must be safe enough. Do you have any suggestions?
Many thanks!

Answer
You can give him an electric kids car as a Christmas gift. Then he can enjoy the driving fun. He can also start his adventure by driving around. Isn't this sounds terrific?
Lavadeals.co.uk has many kids ride-ons, you can have a look.

Do you believe DOST should have a big budget in order to make our country a little more progessive?

DOST-Department Of Science and Technology of the Philippines. Technology brought out the Japanese out of the ashes of World War2 and became the leading electronics manufacturer, first in Southest Asia then the world. Now it is Korea's turn to follow the footstep of their rival Japanese, while China is lurking in the shadow. While we are still climbing coconut tree and making tuba for the drinking session this night. Why can't we be like them even half of what they know would be fine. I was also hoping that DOST should be attach to the Philippines military in building weapons for our own defense and offense capability. With the present nano technology we can harness it's potential by making not only body armor steel platted or titanium built for police officers during heavy firefight but could also monitor their pulse/heart and vital sign. I also thought about a shoes that can monitor a person's vital sign from heart/pulse/blood rate all because of a microchip that is embedded in the sole of the shoes and the monitoring screen is place in the wrist just like a watch and small like an MP3. All he/she have to do is turn on to check his/her condition every now and then while at work or at play. I suppose my idea is not appropriate in Philippines condition. Sabi nga mababaw magisip ang Filipino just look at some of the questionnaire here, at mababaw din ang kaligayahan. I know...I know this idea wouldn't work in the Philippines. Thank you for telling me. But still believe that technology is the answer to bring forth our country to another dimension. So what do you think this time?

Answer
The first step is population control. I just watched a segment in the local channel that a mother is doing 5 jobs to support her ten kids. Economics states that there is scarcity of resources, if people keep on multiplying, soon the resources will be depleted. This is the main reason filipinos go overseas, to find better opportunities.

The second step is to down-size the government. We have too many people in the goverment. The rest should be relocated to private companies. There is also too much red tape and lack of trust in the government. If we can almost privatize the governemnt system, wherein the employees have sufficient earnings, I don't think they will still be corrupt. Well, there are minor exceptions, but they should be punished immediately.

The third step is to bring back capital punishment. The government is wasting money prolonging the cases of inmates. We are paying for the regional trial courts, the court of appeals and supreme court. Why in China, after stabbing 28 children, he gets executed the next month. In Singapore, the 23 year old drug dealer caught was hung after only several months. Justice should be swift and fair.

The last step is good coordination. As of now, each department is seeking their own welfare. Just check the roads. After DPWH has repaired a road, here comes MWSS or PLDT destroying the new asphalt and doing what benefits them. That's just unnecessary expenses they will try to recover through their consumers.

So if let's say the Government has already garnered savings from what I've stated above, where shall they invest it? I'd say agriculture and public transport system. We can be the main supplier for asia for rice and sugar. Plus this will also give the farmers better earnings.

For example, Singapore doesn't have rice fields, but they demand rice. That's go with other neighboring countries. The public transport system will do wonders to our financial economy. By car, it takes 1 hour to go from Makati to Ortigas for my meeting at 10 AM. Think about the wasted time here. Think about workers from Makati commuting to Laguna. It takes 2 hours to get home and spend family time.

As for your theory, there was a time that Filipino Inventors gained support from the government. But to do this will be risky also for the government. They have to shoulder losses. It's better to invest in education to produce nuclear scientists and such.

I remember my mother told me that a Filipina sat with her on a plane for a business trip. It turned out the woman was seeking research funding from a foreign country. She has the initial developments of turning soiled water into almost potable water. She went to the government but was not able to get any support. Just think how it can benefit Ilog Pasig if ever it had materialized. Don't think about war or weapons, and how we can eradicate threats.

Think long-term what are the other benefits research can make, like miracle-rice or electric cars, or we can invest in infrastructure. All of our major roads and public transport were done by foreign companies and contractors. We should be innovative and find solutions and how to make this world better and more efficient.
