Using a solar panel to charge a 6 V. electric childs car battery?

italo

I have a childs electric car, for the 4-6 year old. It runs on a 6V 4.5 Ah sealed lead acid battery. This car came from Spain and has only a 220V charging unit that cannot, of course, plug into a standard American outlet. When I got it the battery was at 5.4 V and the motor wouldn't run. I initially recharged it with my car charger that had a 6 volt setting. I disconnected it at 6.7 V and checked it on the motor and the motor ran fine, though not under the load of a child riding around. I removed it from the motor hookup and after 24 hours the battery dropped to 6.37V this morning and seems to be decreasing slowly (to 6.35 after two more hours).

Since my grandson comes every two weeks and will be using it only for at most 1-2 hours or less.

Instead of looking for any adaptor or adapting an American adaptor to the wiring, I would like to know if I can use a solar charger. It sits on the dashboard of a vehicle and plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet. It puts out 19 V. in full sun and the solar panel part is 3.5x11.5 inches.

The plan is to buy a cigarette lighter outlet, hook it to the wiring of the battery, and use the solar charger between his visits while the car sits in the patio.

1. Do I have to worry about the 19V output of the solar charger?
2. Do I have to worry about harming the battery if I just leave it plugged in during the two week interim (or more) when he is not visiting in order to keep it topped off?
3. Is there anything else I should know about this idea.

Thanks.

The European charger is 230V ~50Hz 18.4W and outputs to 6V 1000mA 6VA
Here is the link to the solar charger:

http://www.4lots.com/browseproducts/Battery-Saver-Plus-1.0-Watt.html
I also found in my computer box two power supplies for stuff long gone: one has an output of 6V 800mA and the other is 6V 200mA. Would either of these work? My question about the solar panel still stands with the new info in the link.

Answer
The battery is doing what good sealed lead acid batteries do; slow decline in voltage after being disconnected from the charger.. Battery sounds good.

There are several things you can do:

Use the 220v you have in your house wiring, just get the right plug adapter by asking at a GOOD hardware or electric store. I think things that are designed at 50 cycle work fine at 60 cycle.

BEST:Get a European to USA adapter rated at 25 watts or More.

Buy a second identical battery for the car, hook them in series and top off their charge using the solar charge on trickle after doing the bulk charge with the 6v charger.

Using the present 6v charger on a timer.

Buy a decent 6v smart SLA charger on-line or at Batteries Plus, which also might be a good resource for your situation.

Do not use the solar charger for two weeks without modification to the circuit, it could really shorten the lifetime of th battery depending on the solar's output.

What happened to the electric cars and why don't they make them anymore?

I was a child in the 70s when the electric cars came about and it seems like you don't see them any more?

Does anyone know why, other than they would be 30 years old now?

Answer
Hopefully they will come back and be affordable in the near future as battery technology improves, but here is the run down on why they were only concepts or projects:

1 - Battery packs weigh 1000 pounds
2 - Batteries lose full capacity after only 2-3 years
3 - Even with 1000 pounds, range was either 40 miles at 80 mph, or 80 miles at 40 mph. Neither made anyone happy.
4 - "Filling up the tank" took 8-10 hours (recharging)
5 - Battery replacement cost every few years was hundreds of $$
6 - Car cost was twice that of a gas car
7 - Batteries took up the whole car's cargo space

However I am part of an EV club myself, and between lithium ion technology and ultra capacators, we should see an affordable one in about 10 years or so. Maybe sooner. The Tesla electric uses 6,000 lithium ion computer batteries and is already under a hundred thousand. $95,000.00 I think. $45,000 just for the replacement battery pack though. Give it time and it will come down.

In the meantime, get a diesel and run B100 biodiesel or get a used Hybrid. Hybrids fix all these problems because the battery pack (cost) can be very small, yet you still can go 300 miles without stopping.

Good luck, by asking this question, I can tell you are on the right direction to making a difference.

I have Large electric stock car with Jeff Gordon, pepsi, k-mart and frito lay stickers made in Aug 2000?

dub

This was won in a contest at K-mart in 2000 still in box never been run. Can anyone tell me what it is worth.

Answer
Without knowing all the particulars...(who made the car, what the actual size is, etc.) can't tell you for positive, but a friend just sold a similar car like that (approx. 2' x 3'..that a 4-6 yr old could ride) for $200. Suppose it depends on the person that wanted to buy it; a collector or fan would pay more than just someone that wanted it for a kid...have you checked with eBay to see what similar items have sold for?

Do you use an electric car, hybrid, or gasoline car?

Q. I've heard of electric cars, but never got into them since my family and friends always use gasoline powered cars. Well now I know a little about them and I think they're pretty cool! So just wondering, which of these three cars do you have? And which do you think is better?

Answer
I use a gasoline engine. I would happily switch to a hybrid or electric car only if:
1. They start making engines that can last more than 10 years.
2. They start making cars that actually look like something you would want to be seen driving around in.
3. They start making a car that can get from 0-60mph in less than 8.5 seconds and can break past the 100mph mark.
4. For electric cars, it would be nice if they could make one that can do more than 300 miles on a single charge.

Do you think NASCAR could or ever would use electric cars?

I mean let's face it, electric cars are the future. Gas prices keep rising and at some point lots of people will be driving electric cars. NASCAR is going to have to keep up with the times.

Answer
Electric cars.... your not serious right. Chevy Volt 40-50 miles on electricity and 240 miles on an underpowered gas engine. Yep that's the future, simply the technology isn't there yet. Plus our countries power grid is nearly maxed out in high usage periods now. Where are we going to get all this power to recharge all these inefficient electric cars? To the guy who speculated ethanol, they are going to use a partial mix this year.

Using electric cars would be worse than watching the Brickyard 400 two years ago: Race for 10 - 12 laps then recharge for 4 - 6 hours, or take 6 minutes in the pits to replace the batteries and go for another 10 - 12 laps. No roar of the engines , sorry but I just don't see it ever happening.

driveable electric car for 13-year-old?

My birthday is coming up november I was wonder if their was a electric driiveable car for kids like those little electric cars and trucks for little kids u see at wal-mart one of those only for a 13year-old

Answer
No. Not really. That's a little kid thing. You can get an electric scooter or golf carts are legal for you to drive on private property. There are also go-carts, but those are generally gas powered.

Having an electric car, what does it involve? How do you recharge at home or if you're out?

Q. What are your impressions of electronic vehicles? Do you think that they are worst or better than regular vehicles in regards to performance and fuel consumption?

Does anyone have an electronic car or know of anyone that does? What are your impressions that you get from ownership? Does it look like it takes effort to own and refuel compared to that of an ordinary fossil fuel vehicle?

Iâm interested to know how you charge them in your own home. I assume you canât just simply plug it in a regular plug socket! If anything, how much does it cost to have certain adapters/ rechargers installed in a household?

How often do they have to refill and how long does it take to charge? (Please state make and model).
How easy is it to find a fuel station that caters for an electronic vehicle?

What worries would you have, if any, about purchasing an electronic vehicle? (E.g. performance, fuel consumption, servicing, incurring charges, or perhaps maintenance).

Thanks a lot, I'd really appricate your answers!

Answer
Electric cars are really still being invented. So far there have been a few made, but they aren't total transportation solutions. The problem is that they can't run more than 150 or 200 miles (at most) on a charge. So you can't take one on a long trip.

Electric cars can be charged right from a household socket. But they charge faster at 220 than 110, so if you're serious you'll have a 220 socket put in your garage. Most homes are wired for 220, in fact if you have a clothes dryer in the garage you probably already have a 220 socket.

Our power companies have huge excess capacity in the evening and at night. Power stations can't just be shut down, they make power 24 hrs a day but peak demand is only from 7am to 5pm. And there's no way to store this power. So power at night is excess, basically 'free'. We could power million of cars from this power. (Here in California where we make a lot of power from rivers running downhill in the Sierras, we use this excess electricity to pump water uphill at night so we can make more power in the morning!)

There are breakthroughs being made all the time in batteries, to allow them to hold more energy for a given weight and size. So the electric cars of the future will to more distance per charge. Also we're working on a model of hybrid that runs on batteries for the first 100 miles or so, then the gas engine kicks in. This will be a good all-around car. Normally they will run just on batteries for commuting, the occasional trip to the store or driving kids to soccer practice. But if you decide to go on a long road trip you're covered there too.

Electric cars should last a lot longer than gas-powered cars. There's no engine, just an electric motor, and those last practically forever. The motors are small enough to fit inside the wheels! The batteries, though, are very heavy, and make up perhaps more than half the weight of the car.

Who thinks we need electric cars now?

Jimz

I think so cuz of global warming and the "Aptera" is the perfect car to drive, it goes 300 miles per charge for a hybrid, and goes 120 miles for all electric, the charging takes a couple of hours and doesn't cost alot to charge (a few dollars) the all electric cost about $26,000 the hybrid cost about $30,000. Think about you don have to buy gas anymore with the all electric you can learn more about this and reserve one now at http://www.aptera.com/ P.S there's also a video on youtube about this car

Answer
What your describing is far from perfect for a vast majority of people. I have 3 kids and a wife, only one of whom will fit in that thing. I don't have off-street parking available, so where do I plug it in? My workplace also does not have dozens of outlets in the parking lot, so same question. I live in Wisconsin, which gets pretty cold. Will the all electric model run at all when it's -10° outside? If I run out of juice halfway to where I'm going, I'll have to sit somewhere (with an outlet) for a "couple hours". Plus, the thing looks like a death trap. I'm not paying $26K for George Jetson's golf cart, no matter how much gas costs.
What I "need" is for our pansy politicians to quit pandering to the environmentalists and start drilling anywhere there's a trace of oil to be found under American soil. By the time all the oil dries up many decades from now, we'll have perfected hydrogen, fuel cells, fusion, or who knows what. It's not like all the oil will just suddenly vanish and the next day we'll be out of gas. Electric is nowhere near a perfect solution right now.

Question about more fuel efficient cars?

krispy

Cars have changed a lot. There are now Hybrids and electric cars. What is a important factor that caused these changes in the car industry? Is it polution and peak oil? Any others?

Answer
There is a convergence of need with capability. In the last several decades electronic devices have been getting smaller and powering those devices has spawned a battery industry and supporting electronics. GM had an interest in solar powered vehicles that lead a research team to win a solar car challenge. This led directly to the development of the "Impact" a prototype battery electric car.

Meanwhile the California Air Resources Board (CARB) which predates the founding of the EPA by 3 years, was searching for ways to reduce air pollution in California. Seeing that the Impact was an already existing zero emissions car. They created the Zero Emissions Vehicle mandate (ZEV) in the early 90's. This called for automakers to sell a limited number of zero emissions vehicles as a small percentage of their total business if they did business in California. This then led directly to the development and lease of the EV1, RAVev, Ford Ranger ev, the S10 electric pick up and the Honda EV+. Of these only the EV1 was built as an electric car from the ground up as it was based on the Impact and not a gasoline powered car.

These early EV's needed a battery and there was a good one. The nickel metal hydride (NM-HI) developed by the Ovonics corporation: http://www.evuk.co.uk/hotwires/rawstuff/art24.html But Ovanics sold the rights to the battery to GM who among others brought a lawsuit against CARB to crush the ZEV and then they recalled and crushed the EV1 cars. This was made infamous in the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car" GM then sold the battery rights to Texaco. Six days later they were bought out by Chevron who brought suit to keep the NM-HI batteries out of electric vehicles. They agreed however to allow the batteries with a smaller format in vehicles that still had a gasoline engine and the hybrid was born. Almost every existing hybrid vehicle uses NM-HI Batteries (see mine at: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Aqv4NfsX53ue3XBanRpLzAv95nNG;_ylv=3?qid=20100304052536AAMz5Az for a list of hybrid cars that use NM-HI batteries) For whatever reason Chevron consistently refused to license them in a format sufficient for a purely electric vehicle.

There was a lot of talk about peak oil in 2004 - 2008, When speculation caused the oil price to rise dramatically gasoline prices skyrocketed. This produced two effects that have affected electric vehicles. The price of gas created even more of an interest in electric vehicles. It also precipitated an economic collapse as people on the financial edge with cheap credit could no longer afford their energy bills. That collapse has stimulated legislative reaction and resulting development funds for alternative energy including electric vehicles.

You can expect that the current credit economic crisis will limit electric car production but research and development will continue. It may also eliminate some dead wood in the automotive industry and create spaces for eventual new development. By mid decade some solid technological advances may also begin to reach consumers.

American Hybrids or Fuel Efficient Cars....?

Q. What are some out there? Im planing on keeping my options open to an American car, but does anyone know any that arnt too expensive (can possibly find used/lease) and what kinds there are, comments or reviews on any, etc.
Thanks :D
Pretty much..
Any American car,
Fuel efficient.
Justtt Fuel efficient I guess..
And American, I wont be buying it till next year.

Answer
American carmakers do have hybrids.. Ford makes the Escape Hybrid, which I think is probably the one with the best drivetrain of all current American hybrids.

It uses a Power Split Device transmission, which is mechanically very simple and consequently very durable. It has just a single gearset to combine the power from the gasoline engine and electric motors, and the first of New York City's Escape Hybrids in its taxi fleet have withstood 200,000 miles of abuse at the hands of cabbies with no problems.

(the PSD geardrive transmission was developed by the American technology company TRW, and it's also used in the Toyota Prius and other Toyota, Lexus and Nissan hybrids).

Right now the 2008 Escape Hybrid 2WD qualifies for a $3000 Federal Tax Credit from the IRS too.

Escape Hybrid gets 32mpg combined city/hwy, easily the best fuel economy of all SUVs.

What is the plan for earthquake preparedness in Illinois?

A person

Answer
Fallow this any where in the world.
PROTECTION DURING EARTHQUAKES

The following are some of the important precaution to be observed to save our life during an earthquake. Even though we do not have fool proof system to fore warn earthquakes some of the changes in nature or in the behaviors of animals and birds may help to decide the situations.

Before an earthquake.
Have a battery powered radio, flash light, and first aid kids in your house ,
Make sure every one knows where they are kept ,
Learn first aid; teach how to stop electric main and gas supply ,
Donât keep heavy objects in high shelves ,
Fasten heavy appliances to the floor, and anchor heavy furniture to the walls ,
Plan for your family for reuniting after an earthquake if anybody separated ,
Urge your school teachers to discuss earthquake safety in the class rooms, and ask them to conduct drills ,Keep some dry fruits and drinking water.
Find out your office has an emergency plan, know your responsibility at your works during an emergency .Keep some dry fruits and drinking water .

During an earthquake.
Stay calm if you are indoors, stay out if you are out of buildings. Many injuries occur as people enter or leave the buildings.
If you are indoors , stand against the a wall near the center of the building, or get under a sturdy table keep some cushion on your head, Stay away from windows and outside doors, if you are in a high rise building stand against a support column.
If you are in outdoor stay in the open place , keep away from over head electric wires. and bridges. If you are in car just stop it where there is know over bridge or over head electric lines and stay in side the car until the shaking stops.
Donât use open flames, if you are in a moving vehicle stop away from over bridges and stay inside the vehicle still earthquake stops.

After an earthquake.
Check yourself and nearby people for injury, provide first aid,
Check electric and gas connection,
Turn on your radio or T.V for emergency instructions, reduce the use of phone lines it may be required for conveying some important messages.
Stay out of damaged buildings,
Wear chapels and gloves to protect against shattered glass and debris.

Stay away from beaches and water front areas where Tsunami could strike, even long after the shaking has stopped.
Have one earthquake alarm fixed in your house.

What are the best car brands?

Q.

Answer
depends on what you want.
if you want sheer speed at a good price the Nissan GT-R is hard to beat but it can't go off road or carry many kids around.

personally i think the best overall car is the Tesla Model S P85+. it's large and spacious for storage. it can carry 5+2 people so it does the same job as a minivan, it's fast (as fast 0-60 acceleration as an audi R8), it's safe (highest rated crash test results ever, in fact it even broke the roof drop testing machine while passing the test), it's efficient (being completely electric with a more than usable range the cost to run the model S is much lower than a regular gasoline car), it's good looking (though it might not be the best looking car ever made, it's the best all electric car available making it desirable), it's innovative and has the highest ownership satisfaction of any car.

sure there are cars that can do some of these things better than the Tesla but they usually lack a lot of other things that the tesla excels at.

hybrid electric cars and cost and building one?

Ashley1nOn

i was wondering im only a teen.. i wondered if you are driving the electric cars/gas....yes you are saving money on gas... but how much oney are you having to spend on your home electric bill just to recharge your car.. different areas have different price in electric bills and where i live the price is pretty steep. .so just charing the car is going to cost you home wise....then of course you have to pay for all of the instalation of the elctric system.. you have to get the battery change out...i have heard that there rattled in these hybrid cars when the swtich from gas and go to electric...

my main question is.... are you really saving when you buy hybrid cars........or should you wait on the hybrid cars to come out(later date) so all the kinks in the car are gone...

also wih building a car.. a group of kids and i have a dodge challenger(mine 09 suppercharged i got a new one cult enegry10 srt8 yayyyyme) but what we have done was get a used hhybrid car and took the battery out we have been working on the car for a while to get it to efficenly work on the challenger... it runs smooth and great.... the only problem is that you have to switch it over to hybrid or gas before you turn the car on.... we were wondering is there anyway we could get the car to switch over while the car is on say we are at a red light and want to to it back to gas... what would be a better way to have it.. its a diesel hybrid what we call it.. we did alot of modifacation to make sure it works properly and runs smooth because we still wanted a hot muscle car sound...

so is there anyway we can get the car to switch over while we are driving....

thank you very much,
the future of cars

sorry for my bad spelling

oh and we can get the car to get 23mpg on the electric and 17mpg for just the gas

Answer
You pay 1/4 as much (to go the same distance in the same car) for electric as you do for gas.

Installing a 220V 30A breaker doesn't cost much at all. That can charge an electric car at 15 miles per hour (15 miles of range for each hour of charge). That's as much as you need. For faster charging than that you need to install a special box.

Hybrid cars will get less expensive as the price of the batteries goes down. How much you save in gas depends on the price of gas and how much you drive. Can you predict what the price of gas will be in the next 7 years? Of course not, no one can. But I'll tell you this, it aint going to go down. At $4.00 per gallon, your savings in gas usually out weighs the higher car payment.

Listen dude, we don't know what components you're using in your car or how you have it wired up. How are we supposed to know how to rewire your own creation? But I'll tell you this, taking off from a red light, it's better to have electric and diesel at the same time as opposed to just diesel.

People often think of hybridizing as a way of saving fuel, but that's not actually the case. It's a way of increasing the power without burning that much more fuel. Some car manufacturers use it as a way of getting super high gas mileage by using a super small engine and still having enough power to move. But you could just as easily use it as a speed mod. Like a super charger or nitrous, only instead of burning more fuel and shortening the life of your engine, you burn the same amount and lengthen the life of your engine.

First Car for a Young Mom?

Well I'm thinking about getting a car soon but I've never owned a car or even gotten my drivers license yet because I'm a princess (just kidding) and I rather not drive. HOWEVER, I think it's time for me to learn to drive and get my own vehicle.

I am a beginner driver; I've driven a couple times but for the most part I need an easy to operate vehicle.
I have a young son (almost a year old); I need a safe car
I do not want some slutty gas guzzling trash car; If I could, I would get a solar panel car.
I want a car with a good amount of legroom (I'm short but not my fiance).
The Hybrid the merrier, although if I were to get a hybrid I would just pay the premium for a brand new one.
Cupholders. Bitches these days have become stingy on the cupholders.
I would buy a tank so I don't have to worry about being crushed by another car but I don't want a muscle car that will turn other cars into origami.

If I could I would want a classic Mercedes-Benz 190 SLR from the 50's but I'll get one of those when my son is off to college so he can't wreck it.

I like electric cars and cars that barely use gas. I want to save money in the long run.

Answer
As a first car, your best bet is to go for cheap cars that perform well, reliable, high resale value, and easy to use. You may go for Toyota's Corolla or Camry, Honda Civic, Hyundai or Kia cars, or even Nissan cars. Ford cars are also good. Bear in mind that you need to hover around the 1.6 to 2.4 litre engine mark. Make sure the car comes with the specs you want.

A new car is great, but also consider buying a used car. For a first car, used cars are great. Few scratches wouldn't hurt and its easy to find one for cheap for you to get hold of driving. Once you are confident, then you can go and get the car you want from the agents.

Harley Davidson kids ATV battery?

rachel p

we a atv for my two old that was given to us with no battery or charger . we cant find it anywhere, we dont no what type or volt we need someone please help?

Answer
It should be 2 six volt batteries try at a golf cart shop if not you can hard wire a car 12 volt make sure it is very small voltage and amps or else you can fire the motors out it is actually cheaper to do this method because of the expense in the twin 6 volt.another benifit is you can change out and put a stronger electric motor in the future. search yahoo or google for a wiring diagram when you are ready to let your little one "fly"
