I can ride a bike and walk but there are some places you just can't walk to. What do you do? What can we do?

Answer
despite what people think, USA has cheep gas compared to the world... even tho its outrageous (expected to hit 7 USD's this summer). If you live in town and do not have kids, consider buying an electric assisted bike. ( http://www.thegostore.com/cosoxbelmo.html ) there; cheep to buy, street legal, can be driven on the side walk, do not require a license, and you don't have to pay any taxes on them.
if you have a family and kids and live in the city. consider buying a electric converted Geo metro.( http://e-volks.com/index.html ) They cost as much as the average used car. They cost less to operate ( less then .06 USD a mile) and are perfect for in city driving

if you travel more then 70 miles a day.....
you should buy a fuel efficient car.. like a Honda that gets 70 mpg

Is it safe to drive 19 hours to Florida?

Juiceman

We are going on a last minute vacation so we are driving and I'm taking my wife and kids on a long road trip. Is it safe and any advice?

Answer
children are only the horror their parents make them into. for the 16th time in my 8yr old's life, we are about to embark on a 20 hour train ride to moscow, a flight to houston, then a 3 hr drive home. for my son, it is simply life. he will climb the deays like a monkey in the train, sit like a gentleman in the plane and dern-well would drive the rented car if i let him. sensibly. so if you know your children, that should be no problem. speak calmly to your children as you have always done. tell them how beautiful thw USA is and they can SEE it as they drive. INTERACT with them- ask them to look for something unusual (i used to notice some electric transmission towers were ballerina style, standing on a single toe rather than the linebackers we had near home, broad, stocky-legged and tall. also, highways and trains run parallel some places. find on your maps (sorry, i still use real maps and assume EVERYBODY has a map) which stretches have railroads and announce to the troops to be on the lookout for trains. if your children like trains... TRY to unplug the evectronics (ganes, dvds, notebooks, ipadpodphone) and engsge each other. don't go to war over it! if gaming is life, let 'em live. try to find towns and cities with interesting things for you AND the children. i suppose each has a digital camera. like paris, texas has an eiffel tower with a cowboy hat on top!
safe- of course, drive 5 mph under the limit, you are not running a railroad (plagarism- no source quoted!!) you are on vacation. have required child seats and boosters WEAR SEAT BELTS (AS AN EXAMPLE TO THE LITTLE ONES) everyone will want a restroom break, expect to stop endlessly. pepsi break, water break- keep drinks in the cabin to let everyone drink. dehydration can cause headaches9 not good on a trip.
ASK everyone what they would like to see. google for places and try to fit in stops in several places.ENJOY the trip. when stopping, if in a safe place, toss a frisbee or football, etc. some small towns have municipal parks ideally located a block or two from the highway.

I remember a song I liked in the morning scene in Cheaper By The Dozen. I haven't seen the movie in a while so I don't remember the details, but I'm pretty sure it was closer to the beginning of the movie and remember liking the song. I searched the songs in the movie and it wasn't one of them, so perhaps it was too obscure to make anyone's list. Help would be appreciated.

What are good stocking stuffer gifts for boys ages 12-14?

Signilda

Not too expensive, please. I can't afford all those electronic gadgets. Thanks

Answer
*They have the "lump o' coal" stocking stuffers at many retailers that have different gifts inside. Personally my oldest son collects cars. So what I bought last year was a pack of two that had the hotwheels inside.
*You can buy those small remote control cars ( I mean matchbox size small). Which seems to be a big hit with kids and parents alike b/c they are cheap and are not too space consuming. They can be found at walmart for about 3 or 4 dollars.
*Pack of Batteries.
*Finger Flashlights.
*One of their favorite cartoons or movies on DVD. I know it sounds expensive but relatively not. Walmart had ones like Spiderman 2 etc for 2.96.
*School Supplies( things you were going to have to buy anyway, its an even better idea if they are into drawing etc.) *You could get pencils, pens, colored pencils, etc.
*A Watch.
*Yo-Yo.
*Want to try something different and unique? How about going to a local museum or novelty store, you could buy some space food/drinks,lunar ice candy and funny gifts like talking pens or whoppie cushions.
*If they have a collection of some sort (rock, stamp, etc.) you could buy them something to add to that collection.
*You can buy those handheld games (starting anywhere from a dollar at dollar stores and walmart and on up. )
*Some cool Spy gagets/gear.
*If they like Harry Potter you could buy them some of those harry potter jelly beans in a bag for a dollar. They have many weird and different ones with burn toast flavor and many more. I bought several b/c they are very neat. They even come in a purple bag that can be reused. They also have choclate covered bugs, and Jelly slugs and range from 1.00-3.00.
*Socks.
*A Hat.
*I got Nextar 512 mb Digital MP3 players for 9.99 a few days ago.(TOYS R US)
*What about bath gift set ( or singles ) Like Axe or Bod. You can get body sprays, colognes, deoderent and body washes.
*Gloves.
*A small box of nascar shaped chocolate cars. (you can get their favorite racer if they are into nascar)
*Do they play a sport or an instrument? (get them something related to that, new knee pads etc.)
*If they already have some electronic gagets how about some accesories for it, like new earphones or skins.
*A book.
*A science experiment book.
*Video Games if they already have a system like psp, xbox, playstation etc. You could get them a new game or any one that you think they would enjoy.
*A new toothbrush.
*How about some nostalgic candy assortments like:
Candy Buttons
Candy Cigarettes
Wax Fangs, Bazooka
Jaw Breakers
Mary Janes
Candy Necklace
Cinnamon Fire-Pix
Atomic Fire Balls
Chick-o-stik
Sugar Daddy
Lemon Heads
Boston Baked Beans
Licorice Pipe
Root Beer Barrels

*Wallets
*Electric Toothbrushes
*Electric Razors (if its that time)
*Their Favorite magazine.
*Their Favorite Candies

I go to our Eveything is a dollar store, where I buy a huge stocking for both of my boys (you see these elsewhere for 15 dollars or more). They stand about 2 and a half to 3 feet tall. Not a bad deal for a dollar, and have good quality, they withhold all I pack in them and hanging up. Good luck and I hope this helps. Happy Holidays !

What is home life in Italy like?

electric cars for kids age 9 image

Kura

What's the culture like and anyother things they have that is different and alike to the USA. Thanks ^-^
Please, no more about what the people LOOK like, but their HOME LIVES.

Answer
Life here is very simple and very good. Most Italians live in smaller houses than in the US, and apartments are more common than houses, even in the suburbs. Many Italians have a vacation home or a relative who lives in a vacation area (beach or mountains) and they often visit during any holiday break and for the whole month of August. They routinely get six weeks of vacation and much more time for hospitalizations and maternity leave.

Shopping is usually done every other day, or even every day, rather than weekly. They also shop in smaller stores and use open markets or fruits and vegetable stands for produce. Bakeries and butcher shops are everywhere and they use them more frequently than we do. Food isn't exactly like the Italian-American food that you're used to eating. Salads aren't served very often, as they prefer vegetables grilled in olive oil, and pasta is only one course of the meal and the meat is served as the second course. Bread is served plain, not with butter. They eat seasonal foods... seafood near the coasts, meats inland and further north, and they serve vegetables that are 'in season'. Wine is cheaper than soda and is served for lunch and dinner, even in workplace cafeteria lunchrooms. Many parts of Italy have water with high calcium levels, which can cause kidney stones, so they often drink bottled water- especially sparkling/bubbly water.

The households also use less energy than ours. Many Italians don't have air conditioning throughout the house, but rather use window units in just a few rooms. There is also a government mandate in the southern parts of Italy, that limits when heat can be turned on in buildings. Water heaters are smaller and dryers aren't as common... many Italians still dry clothes on the line year round. Refrigerators are also smaller, hence the need to shop for food more often.

Cars are smaller and you learn to drive when you're 18 years old, unless you drive a very small, partially electric car and for that, the age is 16. Parking is hard to find in cities, so cars park everywhere, sidewalks, corners, and it's common to double or triple park next to someone else if you'll just be there for a second. Traffic laws are ignored a lot, especially by the motorini (motorcyclists), and lanes are considered a suggestion, so the two lanes marked on the road will become three or four!

The schedule runs a little later and more relaxed. Work and school starts at 9 am, lunch is at 1 pm, followed by a 'riposo' (rest period), where many stores are closed and apartment buildings have quiet hours from 2 to 4 pm. Dinner isn't usually eaten until 7 or 8 pm, and even later for eating out.

Children are cherished and spoiled. Even workers who come to my house let the kids 'help' with repairs. Older people are also greatly respected and family is important. Family meals with the extended family are popular on Sundays after church. Holidays are sacred and Christmas is not as commercial. Almost everyone is Catholic and considers themselves Catholic, even if they rarely go to church.

It is sometimes very hard to live here and I miss the US a lot... the chaos and traffic take their toll, but the people make up for it. They are very boisterous, outgoing, and welcoming people. They don't call it 'il dolce vita' (the sweet life) for nothing!

How old should you be to....?

1. Dye your hair/ just highlights
2. Wear makeup
3. Own a phone
4. Have a FaceBook
5. Wear shorts above knee
6. Got to the mall alone with friends
7. Have a laptop
8. Have an IPod/IPad

Answer
Oh, I am gonna so get sooo many thumbs down.
1. My daughter was 9 and had electric blue highlights in her hair. She plays line on a boys football team, it was a trend- school color being blue.
2. I would have no issue with my daughter wearing makeup now, she is 10. She is a tomboy and does not care about makeup. I do not forbide it, which is why she does not request it.
3. My kids have had phones for years, I believe my daughter was sevenish. They are prepaids, they do care about them either. They very rarely if ever ask for a minute card. They are very useful for us because my kids play sports and do extra curricular activities. They will often need a ride a various times. No payphones in our town. Phones are useful. Plus I can gps their locations.
4. My kids have fb also. They are 13,11, and 10 years old. They have them because my son this past summer travel to Europe. Fb was a free easy way to communicate. They never used it, lol. And still do not.
5. Wear shorts above the knee. Any age within moderation. Fingertip test in my house. Again, not an issue with a tomboy. Tomboys do NOT wear short -- shorts. You would never wear anything but basektball shorts to play basketball in. Ah, the logic of a 10 year old.
6. As for going to the mall alone with friends. Not happening. Our nearest mall is 45 minutes away. Unless the kids can drive they are out of luck. Even if they could drive, still is not happening. In our state you cannot drive with passengers until you reach a certain age. No friends in cars.
7. Laptop, my kids all have laptops. We worked with computers and internet for several years. That is a given. Again, yeah my kids never turn them on.
8. Ipod- i woukd say 10 or 11 depending on the kids responsibility. They are expensive. My 11 year old had one since he was 10. As for an ipad, yup that ain't happening. Way too expensive, I do not even care if we can afford it. They want it, they can buy it.
So, I am not much of an "at a certain age", type of parent. Certain thi gs go with responsibility. One of my kids may be ready for something and the other may not.

My little cute niece is three years old and she is really a little adventurer. She is interested in almost everything. I want to give her a special gift which can help her to explore her little world (in the yard) but it must be safe enough. Do you have any suggestions?
Many thanks!

Answer
You can give him an electric kids car as a Christmas gift. Then he can enjoy the driving fun. He can also start his adventure by driving around. Isn't this sounds terrific?

Q. Watch the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car". Wally Rippel is shown explaining that the oil companies were afraid of losing out on trillions of dollars in potential profit from their transportation fuel monopoly over the coming decades, while the auto companies were afraid of losses over the next six months of EV production. Obama is actually giving automakers incentives to make these cars, this would have never happened under Bush, or any republican for that matter. Bush , Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, and Andrew Card, are all former executives and board members of oil companies.

Answer
are you kidding? they won't even admit it was reagan who killed carter's tax credit for homeowners who installed solar heating systems in their houses because it benefited ordinary americans instead of the oil and utility companies that republicans think should be the only recipients of government support and protection.

Can a car company sue you if you drive a car they don't want you to drive after sold?

Blue

There is an Electric car from the 90's college kids rebuilt it. Some of them we're sold on accident , others where crushed after the lease was up on them. The car company sent them a cease and desist after rebuilding the old broken down one that was left which was sold on accident to them. Can a car company sue/take away a car they sold to them?

Answer
The right to bring a lawsuit exists until it is proven that the lawsuit is without merit or standing. The outcome depends upon how title was transferred, and the obligations involved. Here is an example. http://www.alternativeenergy.com/profiles/blog/show?id=1066929:BlogPost:9928 And like this one GM can take away the vehicle and say that there was no interest, but this does not take away the experience of those who worked on the vehicles or the joy in resurrecting one from the dead.

In fall the Nissan leaf will be released along with 4 other models of electric cars made by variouse companies in 2012, will they sell? will people be interested? will are world finnaly convert from gas to electric powered vehicles?

Answer
When petrol vehicles were first being developed they were a poor 3ed choice behind steam and electric cars. Poor roads, flat tires, and little available fuel made their range severely limited. At an average of 10 to 20 miles per hour they were little faster than horses. Steam vehicles were 4 to 5 times faster. In part the success of the petrol vehicle was due to the infrastructure of roads and petrol stations to increase their range.

Electric vehicles with a wireless electrified roadway could do everything a petrol vehicle could ... better: unlimited range, no refueling required, a fraction of the cost, and the possibility to put more vehicles on the same roadways: http://www.iav.com/us/index.php?we_objectID=15760 Most of the complaints you may hear about today are really a matter of the infrastructure surrounding the vehicles and not a drawback of the vehicles themselves. So it then becomes a matter of the direction we wish to take, our willingness to marshal around a common goal and our need for a better future.

I need some advice from people with Electric-Gasoline cars?

Jerseygirl

I'm interested in purchasing a 2012 Honda CR-Z. However, I don't know anyone in my circle of friends or family who own an electric car, or even an electric-gasoline. I was wondering what it's like and what should I expect. Is charging the car going to raise my electric bill exponentially? Will I be able to just run the car on gas if needed? How and where will I be able to charge the battery? I would really appreciate anyone with an experience with one.

You need to know a bit more about such vehicles. There are battery electric cars like the Mitsubishi I MiEV, the Nissan Leaf and Tesla vehicles, the roadster, and the new model S. And then there are hybrids that can never be plugged in like most Toyota Prius, and your 2012 Honda CR-Z ( 1 ) and then there are cars that can be plugged in or use gasoline.

Only the battery electrics allow and require a different approach to charging the vehicle.2

The_Magic_

How much do u need to make a hour to live comfortably on? No kids. No Wife.

Answer
That all depends on a few factors. A "comfortable wage" differs between San Joaquin and San Francisco, for starters. My 2/1 apartment in Fresno runs $850 per month. For the same layout in as nice a neighborhood in, say, Anaheim, you can go ahead and double the rent. Let's say you're picking a nice starter apartment for $650.

Secondly, your lifestyle has a major impact on your financial needs. Obviously you have internet, so there's $40 a month. With cable, you can easily add another $30 to that monthly tab. Then there's a matter of utilities. In temperate regions, you can expect a $50 monthly electric bill, with another $10 gas for a 1/1 (you're a single guy, right?)
Start running that air conditioner in the summer, and you can expect at least another $100 in the summertime (I used to live in a 2/1 apartment with a $300 monthly summer electric bill, so you want to factor that in).
Groceries round off another $150 per month, let's say you use $40 in gas per week (that's $160 monthly) if you plan on driving. For simplicity's sake, let's assume for a minute that you've paid in full for your '91 Taurus that you found on Craigslist, so we'll keep a car payment off of the budget (for now), but factor in another $75 for insurance, and say you like to eat out twice a week (there's another $160 monthly).

With this example, you're looking at monthly expenses of $1325. Broken down into 4-40 hour workweeks, you would need to earn $331.25 per week, or $8.28 per hour. So, in a smaller town, you could survive, just barely, on California Minimum wage.

My advice? Save up for a vasectomy and find a good woman to split the rent with.

What is the best way to relocate from one state to another?

s9j6j

I want to move to NC from SFLA but I don't know how to begin starting from scratch. Is it easy to get stable in NC like for example find a job, buy a house, is auto insurance cheap? I am twenty years old, I do not have a college degree of any kind, I've worked as a file clerk with the same company for 3 years. I have a car. I want to move away from here but I have no clue how to relocate and establish myself. Any tips or personal experience anyone wants to share?

Answer
Not too hard but requires planning. SO, for auto insurance simply ask for a quote from your current company based on the city you want to live. If they require an address, find an address based on a location you MIGHT want to live. Housing is easy to find on-line and you will have to rent a place at first....Even if you can afford it, don't buy immediately as you need to find out what the areas are like.
As to a job..that can be difficult and really depends upon both your experience, jobs available in the area, and your ability to sell yourself into that market. You will have to adjust your resume for the job you are applying for though.
I am not sure how much you make at your current job, but likely (no offense) not a lot. So you might want to consider renting a place as a roommate rather than your own apartment. WHile in Chicago (and going through a divorce) I had an apartment downtown off Michigan Ave and extra rooms so I rented one out which worked out great. You will have to interview the people etc over the phone, but have certain guidelines: smoking, drugs, sleep overs, times to go to bed normally, dishes, electric, paying cash for bills/receipt. I would suggest going with a person whom is a professional or student in med school.

Moving your stuff...only take what you really need. Don't store things as you will likely not go back for them. Minimize your expenses (car paid for?, credit cards?).

Consider even living in a hospice which can be a good place while you look for work. They have rules etc which will work in your favor and the kids there should be able to point you in a good direction.

Returning to work: Your resume needs to be clear...Have it updated with a current address in S FL. Consider that you may have to work in a restaurant waiting tables, washing dishes, etc while you look for the job you want to do. These are great jobs for moving to another location.

Been there, several times...And don't listen to people like FakeID who obviously did not even read the question. Morons...

Hello, I would like to have an idea to assess how much will be the best offer, living decently and at least to have savings in Edinburgh, Scotland. I plan to take my wife and 2 kids with me.
I read that tax will be around 20%.
Can someone please help me lay out as follows? On a monthly basis.
Groceries, school bus, transportation (Bus), Utilities(water, electricity, etc.) , Education ( elementary and pre school), Gasoline, health care, dining out like 2x a month and any other cost I am not aware of in Edinburgh?
I know it is quite detailed, sorry.

Answer
I lived in Edinburgh. But only as a university student so my take on things will be slightly biased.

VAT (value added tax): 20% on most goods and services -- https://www.gov.uk/vat-rates
Groceries: I spent about 30 a week on myself. I do not eat meat or dairy but do eat a lot of fruit and fresh vegetables. So that would be 120 a week for one person.
School Bus: If you are from the states the school bus system is not the same. Kids are expected to make their own way to school by walking, driving, or taking the public bus. The bus each way is 70p for children.
Bus: You can buy one way fair for an adult for 1.50. A day ticket for 3.50. A week's unlimited pass for 17 (13 for uni student and 9 for children). A month's unlimited for 51 (40, 39). A year's for 612 (468,324). more information at: http://lothianbuses.com/timetables-tickets-maps/fares-and-tickets
Utilities: I was a student so I did not have to pay for water or council tax. but in a three person flat the gas/electric was about 60 pounds a month total (and their was a set payment. you you obviously used less in the summer and more than that amount in the winter but it evened out in the end).
education: free school and university-> (for those living in scotland for 4+ years). private schooling available. Most public and all private schools wear a uniform.
Gasonline: expensive. 3.65 per litre. use an automatic and only drive when needed as filling your car will probably cost 60 quid. http://www.indianagasprices.com/Edinburgh/index.aspx
health care: free as long as you are a resident. but you can pay for it if you want. www.bupa.co.uk
eating out: I was a student so i obviously ate cheap. But I would say a main at an average restaurant (not a pub meal) would be 15-20 pounds and a fiver for a drink. So one main, one appetizer, one drink each for two people would be about 65 pounds.

What do you think should be done about the daycare problems in this country?

christianw

Do you think daycare is too expensive? Do you work at one and think they dont pay enough? Any ideas on change?

Answer
It's expensive, but the daycares have to pay their employees and overhead cost.

My kids are in a home daycare and she makes approximately $3000/month (before taxes and I live in a very high cost of living area). That sounds like a lot until you break it down to what she has to pay for. The daycare is in her home, so unlike most people when they leave to go to work, they turn down the thermostat, she can't do that, so her electric and water is higher than most. If something breaks in her home, she has to have it repaired right away, she can't wait until next month or when money is better for her family. And she can't have it done by a friend, it has to be done by a licensed professional. Her car and homeowners insurance is more expensive than the average insurance policy. She has to buy toys for the kids to play with, inside and outside, (and she has to make sure there is a good variety and replace them when necessary), and she has to have educational toys and books available.

Would you buy South Africa's first electric car?

Ayiza

I would
The guy from optimal energy the company that designed the car said it will cost -/+ R200 000.00 (He was on radio 702)
So it will not be expensive like the Prius.
It will be brilliant for city commuting.

So what do you think?

Answer
We have a similar thing here in Canada - called the Zenn Car. I think it is a great solution to a lot of problems
1. Relatively cheap to buy
2. Relatively cheap to run
3. Cuts down on the number of speeding accidents because it cannot do those highway type speeds
4. Great for taking kids to school, getting groceries - a really good "Mother" car :o)
5. Takes power away from the greedy guts in the gas and oil businesses
6. Puts power and independence in the hands of those who can afford it but not the gas guzzler type of car. People like pensioners, people with jobs but lower paying ones. Great for people who seldom leave their own city but would like not to have to depend on other people or taxis or buses to go short distances. Great for young people going to college or University, their first job etc and good for their parent's nerves lol
7. Good for everyone - makes for cleaner air. People with respiratory illnesses like asthma etc will benefit. Puts less carcinogens in the air so good for fighting the war on cancer.
8. Not sure about this but I think it might be good for cutting down on the number of stolen cars - Pretty hard to speed off in one of these :o)

People in the cities I have lived in most often use their cars for local stuff. Some, in fact, seldom go more than a mile or two from home. I think it is a great idea and I hope you get one, Ayiza.

Just think - every electric car on the road is one more nail in the coffin of the greedy gas and oil people. Now that is something to celebrate!!

Edit to Nick. There is no gas or oil worth talking about there either but you all drive gas operated cars. PetroSA does not make your gas and oil any cheaper than anywhere else. Where there is a will, there is a way.

How can Obama rail on about Romney and outsourcing when the "Obama Jobs Council (is) Packed With Outsourcing Companies". The quote is the title to a July 16, 2012 Huffington Post article. Additional quotes from within the article:

"Thereâs General Electric, whose CEO Jeffrey Immalt has served as chair of the advisory board since January 2011. Since Immalt took over GE in 2001, the company has lost 37,000 American jobs and added 25,000 jobs overseas" and

Chris Townsend, political director of the United Electrical Workers labor union that represents roughly 5,500 GE employees in the U.S., said "the company has closed more than 30 U.S. plants since Obama took office. GE is a company that, despite the constant claims of growth, continues to shrink in the United States,â

These facts are not coming from some Conservative think tank but the Huffington Post! Quotes are not from a con blog but from a union political director.

this is the motor.
Traxxas 7075 Titan 380 Motor 18T Brushless Tra 1/16

will it work on any 1/16 electric car?
thanks!

Answer
Yes, you could use that motor. But you said you have a cheap 1/16th, meaning low quality??? If you get that motor for a low quality RC then chances are it will tear up the tranny gears. The Traxxas vehicle has stronger gears than the walmart and radio shack RC cars. So those gears can handle that kind of motor. You can get the traxxas motor to fit and work but I wouldn't expect your RC to last very long. Plus, the motor could burn up your ESC (electronic speed controller). You will notice a huge increase in performance but not for long because I would bet my left arm it will tear up your gearing before the battery dies. Hope this helps.

I would abolish the department of education because it's a local and state level responsibility.

I support the right to bear arms, concealed weapons licenses, hunting, stand your ground laws, etc.

Q. Would you be more likely to date a guy with a gasoline muscle car or a small electric car?

Answer
"Eighty percent of American car buyers would find someone with the latest model fuel-efficient car more interesting to talk to at a party than someone with the latest model sports car."

Will electric cars ever be affordable and practical?

Q. Electric cars have been around for over 100 years, yet many problems remain to be solved.
Cost: $40,000+ is out of range for most people and certainly too high for a small car. It would take years to pay for itself in terms of gasoline saved.
Batteries: charging can take several hours. Expense of replacing can be as high as half of the car cost.
It just seems that it will be a long time before technology can give the people an electric car that makes sense.

Answer
we have a long way to go to make electric cars as practical and affordable as gasoline cars. The biggest hurdle now is battery technology. Once batteries can be made which provide the same amount of energy as gasoline, meaning that a battery can take you as far as a tank of gas one a single charge, and are affordable, we will see electric cars on the roads.

Right now, batteries with a decent amount of Amp-hours are extremely expensive and bulky. Plus, there isn't much infrastructure in place to support electric cars. There is a gas station on every corner but can you think of a place to plug in your car even if it used a regular 120Vac outlet? Could you plug it in at work or in a parking garage without running 1000 feet of extension cords?

We may see them being affordable one day but until they become practical as well (solve these issues I listed above), it will be a long time before they replace gasoline cars.

We're trying to decide whether it's worth the extra money to stay in a Disney "Hotel" (specifically the Fort Wilderness Cabins) versus a nearby non-Disney hotel outside the park. From what I can tell, the Disney hotel seems to be about twice as expensive ($300 a night for the family versus $150 for the non-Disney location). Do folks think it is worth the extra money to stay in the Park? We have kids who are 5, 3, and 1 years old.

I am planning my vacation for May '09 and will be staying in the Cabins. I have stayed in them before once when I was younger, but my family owns a motorhome so we have always camped since then. This will be my hubby's first time in the cabins and I know he will enjoy it, though we've camped 2x since we were married and knows what to expect with the campground.

Now, because I have always stayed on property, I of course think it is better, but I will try and give you a few reasons.
-- travelling back and forth to the parks will be time consuming and unless there is a free shutttle, or you are driving your own vehicle will quickly add up
-- after a long day traipsing through the parks you will still have to get your bone tired children back to their hotel, juggling packages, strollers, diaper/bookbags etc
-- you do not get the benefits of staying on WDW property

BENEFITS OF STAYING ON WDW PROPERTY
-- free WDW transportation to all theme parks (from Ft. Wilderness hop a boat for about a 15 min ride to Magic Kingdom, or bus to any of the other parks or waterparks).
-- You only have about a 20 min ride at most from any given park back to your hotel/cabin
-- Anything you buy can be delivered (free) back to your hotel (trading post at Ft. Wilderness) so you do not have to lug purchases around all day with you.
-- On site guests get to participate in Extra Magic Hours which are extended hours either early in the morning or after the park closes, so only guests staying on WDW property are allowed in the park, all others must exit. They check this by distributing wristbands... no wristband, no riding.

CABIN/FORT WILDERNESS BENEFITS
-- Cabins have a full kitchen, so if you are driving or are interested in renting a cab/rental car you can run to an off-site store and do grocery shopping
-- Because of the close proximity and free WDW transportation you can return back to the cabin for lunch, a nap and dinner, eat the food you bought at the store and drastically save $$ by not having to eat in the parks
-- The campground has 2 pools, pony rides, a petting zoo, free nightly Disney movie with campfire and a great view of the Electric Lights Parade (which can also be seen from Polynesian, Lodge and Contemporary, and we've caught it while waiting for a boat to return back from Magic Kingdom).

So, I agree with you about the cabins, for a slightly cheaper but still outdoorsy feel consider the Wilderness Lodge. It is slightly cheaper, still utilizes the boat to the Magic Kingdom and bus to others. If you solely intend to just sleep there, then go with a Value Resort (All-Star Movies, Music, Sports or Pop Century).

I would check out www.allears.net This site will give you more information than you can possibly need regarding rides, resorts, and restaurants. The restaurant section will have menus, prices and kids menus if available with prices. You will probably not want to commute all the way back to your off-site hotel for lunch and dinner. The campground is a quick trip, and with the full kitchen you can have some sandwiches, the little ones can nap and then you are back to it.

Another great reference is Birnbaum's Guide to WDW. The '09 edition comes out the end of Sept.

edit- on-site Disney guests get to use the free Disney shuttle from the airport to their hotel. You can find more info about that on-line it is called "Magical Express."

If you have any other questions please feel free to e-mail.

is there a power wheel type toy for a 5 almost 6 year old?

Lisa Grego

My kids have never had one and we are finally financially well enough to get them each one. I am struggling to find one that my daughter will fit. She is only 40lbs at the moment but she is 3ft 10in. She is quite tall. If you could help me find one for her that would be great.

Answer
The top five Power Wheels vehicles are:
Power Wheels Fisher Price Barbie Smart Car retails for approximately $260
Power Wheels Fisher Price Stinger XS retails for approximately $250
Power Wheels Fisher Price A.T. Rex with Monster Traction retails for approximately $250
Power Wheels Cadillac Escalade retails for approximately $300
Power Wheels A.T. Rex Electric Ride On retails for approximately $250

The Jeep Hurricane is a good Power Wheels ride on toy, but it is definitely not the "best of the Power Wheels" line of ride on toys. The Cadillac Escalade will give you more bang for your buck.

The biggest problem with the Jeep Hurricane is that allthough it advertises as an "off road" vehicle, gravel and dirt really wears on the tires. After only 5 or 6 rides, the tires will start to crack and get holes in them if you are riding it off road. If you plan to only use it for street riding (sidewalks, driveways, etc), then it will be fine. If you plan on running it over dirt, mud, and grass, you will be replacing the tires on a regular basis.

i need notes on how electric cars help the environment. Can you give me some notes or some websites i can check out?

Answer
One main reason is its not producing smoke(pollution free). we have to charge the battery to drive the motor that is placed inside the car. Another one thing is while breaking the car the motor inside the car act as generator and it charges the battery so energy is saved here. Electric car helps the environment only when the power that is used to charge the battery is obtained from Renewable energy(solar, wind, hydro etc).

How good are electric cars compared to normal ones? How do they work exactly?

Awesome Po

I'm 17, I'll get a car soon, I'm just wondering how electric cars stack up next to a regular car...pros and cons?

Answer
Electric cars come in hybrid and pure-electric forms. Hybrids use gas engines in combination with electric motors, and may or may not have to be plugged in. Pure electric cars need to be plugged in, and the time it takes varies.

This explains the variation in charge times: http://www.plug-in.com/charge-times-how-long-to-fill-your-battery/

If you only plan on driving your car short distances between recharges, then an electric car will save you money in the long-run. However, since you're young and might want to take road trips or travel to college, you might want to wait until prices for electric cars go down.

Performance-wise, they can be pretty equal if you are willing to pay the right price. The available options are less, however, and you should put a little time into researching a car before you buy it. I'm sure you already know to be safe once you get your car. Congrats and Good luck!

This isn't in the near future, but the next time my husband deploys, I'm thinking about homeschooling the kids for a year and traveling the country, camping in or near national parks. I want them to see the redwoods and Yellowstone and all that. I haven't thought much about it; I'm just starting to get serious about it. Any thoughts? Also, who wants to let me camp in the driveway for a week?

Answer
I found it cheaper to camp in a trailer and have a truck at your disposal.
Pulling a small car behind a motor home involves upkeep on two engines and drive trains.
You guys can stay with me on your way to Yellowstone, I have my own water and electric hookups, WiFi with cable and a dump station a block away.

How long is a railroad tie supposed to last?

Ding Bat

omg another train question! sorry but I've always liked trains since I was a little girl .. growin' up us kids used to watch'em all the time .. I still don't mind waitin at a crossing or somewhere and watch one go by. I know .. I'm weird .. lol

Answer
O Dingy One........

This is the rail category, so no apology for asking another railroad question is needed. If you had been asking about a chrome plated swizzle-stick or an electric dog polisher, that would have been odd, but still wouldnât require an apology.

A creosoted wood tie installed today has an estimated life span of 40 years. Environment actually plays a smaller part than one would think. For example, if installed in some sort of âswampyâ territory, the ballast may need to be dressed more frequently, but the preserved ties go on.

These days, system âtie gangsâ roam about, replacing ties where needed. It is both art and science. A good tie gang can replace 15 or 17 miles of ties in ten work days. Then they hop over to somewhere else. The 15 miles replaced have nearly an equal amount on each end done perhaps ten and twenty years ago, respectively, so they continue to serve. This rotation keeps the system tie gangs traveling, but youâll rarely see more than 15 or 20 miles of ties less than a few years old strung together, except for new railroad.

Today, all engineering data is stored and readily accessible. But, back in the day, record keeping, especially where millions of ties were concerned, was a practical impossibility. the way they circumvented the problem was through the use of âdate nails.â As their name implies, the date nails were nails that had the year stamped into the top of the nail. They were driven into the ties every so often so that future maintenance of way or track engineering personnel could easily and quickly determine how long the ties had been in service.

Some years ago, a jewelry cottage industry bloomed as the date nails were en vogue as gifts to fathers in the industry or the rail fans. They nail heads were sawed off, cleaned, plated in either gold or silver, and fashioned as tie tacks and lapel pins, the numbers on the date nail heads being the recipients birthday, anniversary, etc.

Concrete ties will last a bit longer, but longevity comes at a price. In the event of derailed equipment, where a single wheel, or even an entire truck drops off the rail, they will run often times for a long distance on top of wooden ties. The ties get cut up pretty bad, but often the problem is found before the wheels come to a switch, or grade crossing, which is when the cars scatter all over the place.

If a wheel or truck drops on top of a concrete tie, they shatter immediately. Any hope of discovering derailed equipment before a major pile up occurs is nonexistent.

So, apology accepted for seeking another answer...........

How can I get help paying my EXTREMELY large electric bill in Pa?

My husband just started a new job. We're both in our mid 20's. We have 2 infants and a boat load of debt to pay off plus the regular bills. We're in so much money trouble, it's scary. We need help with our PECO (electric) bill so bad. They're going to shut off our electricity if we don't pay it in full, in 20 days time. With 2 babies to take care of, we can't afford to have no electric or gas. Any suggestions? (and please don't say something cute like get a job or something. i'm asking for help, not sarcasm.)

Answer
This is a vicious cycle problem. I'm in Australia and have suffered the same problem in earlier life. Steps:

. talk to PECO - often if you have to (how extreme is the bill? If it's miles out of whack with normal, explain this to them. It has surprised you and you haven't allowed for it in your budget) - answer above was good

Regardless of what happens there (because you have to sort things):
. try looking for sell-offs (answer above was good). Can you get a cheaper car to run? Televisions, old childrens clothes and toys at a garage sale etc
. try raising the money through non-borrowing means (e.g. an extra job or whatever)
. try charities - are you in a church for example?
. can you get help with more efficient heating and cooling - lots of green groups out there that might like to use you as a 'project'!

You might need to swallow your pride a bit, get this problem fixed and then fix the underlying problems like doing more efficient things with heating and cooling.

How much would we cut GHGs if we all switched to electric cars?

Chem Flunk

Assume, hypothetically, that everyone replaced their gas-powered cars with either electric cars, or plug-in hybrids, such that 90% of ordinary passenger driving was electric-powered. Assume further, pessimistically, that all the electricity for these cars came from a 50/50 mix of coal and natural gas power plants. Would we reduce our net GHG emissions, and if so roughly by how much? (bonus points for sources)
either as a total figure, or as a percentage of driving-related GHGs...
d/dx: can I have a ballpark guess of the GHG reductions? Trying to at least get an order of magnitude here...

Answer
Even within the information you give there is potentially a great variation: Where are we replacing the vehicles. If you are thinking of almost anywhere than the US then the gasoline mileage for the cars would be higher. It is with gasoline mileage that we start. For every gallon used in an internal combustion engine about 19.5 pounds of carbon dioxide are produced (about 154 lbs per 1 million btu .) As a vehicle travels further on a gallon the greenhouse gas emissions per mile will be reduced.

Not only does the typical mileage vary per country but so also does the energy mix used to produce electricity. If you are considering France than 80% of the electrical power is generated with nuclear energy. The Northwest and Canada uses a lot of hydro. Australia like the midwest US is over 80% coal. There is probably no place that is 50% coal and 50% natural gas. The US mix is about 40% coal 24% natural gas 20% nuclear with the balance mostly renew ables. Coal is on the decline and is being replaced by natural gas and renew-ables.

But for the sake of calculation we assume 50% coal 50% natural gas for electricity for 90% of vehicles. What are we assuming as the starting point? Market penetration for the EV in the US is now less than 1/2 of 1%. Do we assume 0% If we are going to present any numbers we need a working population. The US has about 200 million vehicles. More? Less? What will we assume as the annual mileage for each vehicle. The US average is about 12500 but some use 15000 miles per year. European average mileage is less. In some places like Manhattan 80% of the people don't even own cars.

Because you are considering the replacement of 90% of present vehicles there are factors that are not normally considered. It takes a great deal of electricity to refine gasoline. There are estimates as high as 6.5kWh/gallon. http://greentransportation.info/how-much-electricity-is-used-refine-a-gallon-of-gasoline At this rate the EV can travel further on the energy used to refine a gallon of gasoline than an average petrol car (24mpg) can go using the refined product. The EV would be costing no "new" pollution and we would be avoiding all the pollution of the petrol vehicle and the refinery. Refineries also operate 24/7 so eliminating 90% of them would tend to shift electrical demand away from peak daytime to a more balanced usage.

Another factor that is rarely considered is the inefficiency and pollution caused by coal plants that can not be turned off and can only be turned down slightly to for off peak lower energy usage. Coal must be used to keep the boilers warm at night to avoid boiler damage. Therefore at night when electrical demand is less the more polluting coal plants will be used rather than the less polluting gas fired power plants. Overall electric vehicles charging at night makes the system more efficient than without them but at some increase in pollution.

The refinery + petrol vehicle (85% x 15% = 13% efficiency ) is about 3 x less efficient than a coal plant plus an electric car ( 40% x 90% = 36%) and the difference is even greater with a gas fired plant plus an electric car (60% x 90% = 54%) (average = 45%) This advantage is somewhat taken up by the more polluting aspects of coal ( about 204 lbs of CO2/1million BTU http://www.eia.gov/coal/production/quarterly/co2_article/co2.html ) and by the concerns that burning natural gas produces water vapor and mining natural gas introduces methane into the atmosphere (both more potent GHG sources than CO2. Fracking seems to introduce even more methane (primary component of natural gas) into the atmosphere so some attention must be paid to how the energy is mined, drilled, and transported.

Because the calculations tend to become very complex with many assumptions for variables I am suspect of numbers that attempt to prove or disprove the case for electric cars on the basis of some "exact numbers" for pollution issues alone. What we can say with some confidence is that the EV is by itself a zero emission vehicle and will likely involve from 1/3 to 1/2 the overall pollution (including GHG, spilled liquids and solid waste) of petrol vehicles. When we combine the likely-hood of reduced pollution with the increased security and economic benefits the argument for the EV becomes more compelling.
