Would you buy South Africa's first electric car?

Ayiza

I would
The guy from optimal energy the company that designed the car said it will cost -/+ R200 000.00 (He was on radio 702)
So it will not be expensive like the Prius.
It will be brilliant for city commuting.

So what do you think?

Answer
We have a similar thing here in Canada - called the Zenn Car. I think it is a great solution to a lot of problems
1. Relatively cheap to buy
2. Relatively cheap to run
3. Cuts down on the number of speeding accidents because it cannot do those highway type speeds
4. Great for taking kids to school, getting groceries - a really good "Mother" car :o)
5. Takes power away from the greedy guts in the gas and oil businesses
6. Puts power and independence in the hands of those who can afford it but not the gas guzzler type of car. People like pensioners, people with jobs but lower paying ones. Great for people who seldom leave their own city but would like not to have to depend on other people or taxis or buses to go short distances. Great for young people going to college or University, their first job etc and good for their parent's nerves lol
7. Good for everyone - makes for cleaner air. People with respiratory illnesses like asthma etc will benefit. Puts less carcinogens in the air so good for fighting the war on cancer.
8. Not sure about this but I think it might be good for cutting down on the number of stolen cars - Pretty hard to speed off in one of these :o)

People in the cities I have lived in most often use their cars for local stuff. Some, in fact, seldom go more than a mile or two from home. I think it is a great idea and I hope you get one, Ayiza.

Just think - every electric car on the road is one more nail in the coffin of the greedy gas and oil people. Now that is something to celebrate!!

Edit to Nick. There is no gas or oil worth talking about there either but you all drive gas operated cars. PetroSA does not make your gas and oil any cheaper than anywhere else. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Motorheads if an electric car could outperform a gas car in every way would you want one?

FOOD FIGHT

If it were faster had better range and could be refueled faster and were cheaper to operate would you still want internal combustion.

Answer
No way. The biggest part of owning a hot rod is the sound of an internal combustion engine. Just hearing a V8 car with loud pipes gets me going.

Listening to a vacuum cleaner run does nothing for me. Sure, it's cleaner running and cheaper to operate than a gas engine, but you asked the MOTORHEADS what we think.

I love to build engines and tune them for power. I like them LOUD! I'm 41 years old, not a kid. I have done this all my life, and I'm not ready to quit yet. This would be like asking a surgeon if he would prefer to have a robot and a computer perform an operation. I doubt it.

Well, that's my 2 cents.

Ideas for decorating a toddler boy bedroom?

POPPY

I just finished painting the walls in my soon to be 3 year old son's bedroom. The paint is called "Guacamole" . Its a very warm rich green. My trim is dark wood, which I hate (I like white trim but I'm renting). I'm having a tough time decorating because his dresser is white and the toddler bed is a pine color. I'm not willing to paint the dresser and I really prefer to use what we have already. I love the look of pottery barn, but can't really afford to spend the money. Can you help me come up with some affordable ideas to make it look like a cool, & fun big boy bedroom. I'm not into themes because his likes change so often. But one thing that always stays the same is cars, trucks and trains. I could decorate by displaying cars and picture frames with cars&airplanes themes. I"m not sure. Possibilities are endless. I also need an idea for curtain color. I'd like to add a play table and an easel. I'm also making an underbed train table as a surprise. Thank you for reading my post.

Answer
Just a thought. Try downloading a printing pictures of high end cars and exotic planes or trains. Then frame them and put them up in his room. For extra touches add a small collection of Maisto cars in cases for display. By the way many car dealers will give you free booklets and on occassion you can get promo items(i.e. we got a Porsche flag for our sons room). Maybe a few light weight model planes hanging from the ceiling. And if your able put a 6" shelve about 18" from the ceing around the entire room and set up a electric train on it. Put a switch some where on the wall out of his reach for now(he'll enjoy turning it on when he five or so, but not now he may break it to easily). Also for the curtians try a dark green or Dark purple(aka Royal Purple). By the way a extra nice touch is a rug for a kids room has a play scape on it (usually a road and such). I know it sounds like a lot, but it works out nicely. It's what we are doing for our sons room.

What Is The Best Item You Ever Found At A Thrift Store Or Yard Sale?

elvisgurly

What is the best item you ever found at a thrift store or yard sale?

Do you think thrift stores charge reasonable prices or charge way too much?

Answer
My wife found one of those kid's electric cars for $5...and the guy threw in a toddler bike with training wheels for 50 cents.

But the killer of all garage sale items was the lady trucker who bought what she thought was just some old painting of flowers...turned out to be an $18M Van Gogh. Lucky lady!!!

What percent of america has an electric car?

d in black

please help me, its for my paper in lang arts. lol

Answer
1 percent
I still think that people are so ignorant when it comes to electric
cars they only think of one way to make them run and that's batteries.
Its like you lost your mind and have no innovated ability to think of
more than one source of power. Every year people spend millions of
dollars to go to the gym they hop on bikes and treadmills and
ellipticals and pedal away for hours and then pay their gym for it.
Then they hop in their car and pay gas to ride home. The answer was
right in front of your face when you watched the Flintstones as a kid.
Do remember the car on the Flintstones. Hmm, not so stupid now is it?
Do remember how boats got across the ocean? Have you ever held your
hand outside the window and felt the power of the wind resistance
against your hand? The faster you went the more force you felt
pushing against your hand right. Have you noticed that the quality of
solar powered panel technology has increased tremendously in the last
twenty years. The quality of of generators and electric engines is
also there. Our government has manged to keep all of this from you
because they believe you are all ignorant and set in your ways. They
could make cars that run with out wheels but our government would
never allow it to be mass produced. If you had the means to build a
car that had electric generators that produced electricity via wind
power, Human power "recumbent bike pedals", Solar power and maybe some
lithium batteries you would have a car that would go thousands of
miles without ever needing to be charged or fueled.
But will this ever be allowed. Its amazing that china and japan have
magnetic trains that never touch the track they actually float be we
never use that technology. Its no wonder they do not put any emphasis
on science. They want us to remain ignorant and in the dark. They want
you to keep forking all the billions of dollars in tax revenue. They
want the price of fuel to sky rocket because most of them own the
stock. The only way to overcome the greed is to take matters into our
own hands and break the grip of Fuel mongrels from ourselves by building
our own fuel free cars. I just showed you the way. Now all you have
to do is " Just Do It!"
My method overcomes the perpetual energy law crap because you get extra energy, Via Human power and solar power! The sun is the source of unlimited free power and so what if you have to pedal your car for it to go long distances. I just saved you from getting fat as hell.

how can i make a remote control car go faster?

warlooker

i brought a small remote control car about less than $20.00 hoping i can make it go faster.
how can i make it go faster i want to put a battery in so the motor can spin faster and oil my gears.
but is there any other way to do it.
thank you guys for helping.

Answer
For $20.00 you can't expect to get much more out of the car. It's not really built for speed at that price. Basically, this is a kids toy. There is a huge difference between remote control cars for kids and remote control cars for adults. The complexities of the cars have a very wide gap. Kids cars will run on just a few AA batteries. RC cars for adults feature full miniature engines. Lots of the popular motor kits run on fuel such as gasoline or nitro. Others run on large battery packs that are essentially beefed up versions of kids toys. These cars require just as much maintenance as a real car, since they have all of the same components (plus all of the radio transmitting gear!) to deal with.

So you may want to save up and get your moneys worth by opting for petrol, nitro or electric models. The fastest engine choice that you can find is a nitro engine. Nitromethane is an alternative to regular gasoline, and runs much better for RC cars. It is usually heavier, and therefore more cumbersome on the handling of the car. However, if you are going to be on a fairly straightforward and tame race course, it is a great choice and will provide a huge speed. The only down side is that nitro engines are known for wearing down faster, and breaking at a higher rate. If you use a nitro engine frequently, you can almost expect it to break after intense usage. It is a good idea to have an electric engine that you can swap it out with when the need arises.

The other parts of the car are equally important when you are aiming for absolute fastness. If you are you going all-out on a project, you should expect to spend quite a bit on components like wheels and axels. Usually you want to get wheels that are extremely firm and light. If you have the opportunity to go out to a hobby store and test out a few different components, you will be able to decide exactly what you want based on experiencing it first-hand. This is the best way to shop for anything, and the same goes for remote control cars. Since the parts are usually highly swappable, you can directly compare one with another by trying them in quick succession.

If you arenât a very technically inclined person, the thought of picking all of these parts might not sound very fun. However, you might not have to go through this process. It is possible to buy kits that include all top of the line parts, and are quite easy to assemble. With these you wonât get the high level of customization that you would get out of building a regular home-made car. Being able to choose all of the parts separately is a great benefit, although 90% of the time you can replace individual parts if you decide that you want to go for something that is of a higher quality or a little bit faster than what you had before.

All of these things really add up. If you have one part of a car that doesnât perform as well, the entire thing will be affected. Therefore you need to choose your parts carefully to have the best remote controlled car possible.

2 months before new years...?

why

as soon as january hit you saw a lot of questions about mothers day (ok thats a SLIGHT exxageration). Father's day is two days away and I haven't seen much. Do the ladies really know what daddy wants? (i'm skeptical), Do you care? (thats a cynical thought, but the consensus says...)
real talk-i have contributed a great deal of sperm to the condom factory, should send them something?
Sarah-waiting until the last minute make it more meaningful. you know you love that refrigerator dress the hubby got you last year. and remember the iron? Those shirts are still crispy starched aren't they

Answer
I got cards from the kids to give him, a card from me, a couple of nice polo shirts, and new grooming set complete with waterproof electric shaver and trimmer, and both kids made him something.

For mother's day he just asked me what I wanted!!! Can't go wrong that way. I got a nice "himcooked" (lol) steak dinner with a nice glass of wine along with my car detailed by my oldest son (6 almost 7). It was the perfect day!!

Answer
Ask about accidents and recent service

when you look over the car, look down the sides of the car to see if its been hit, look at the oil see if its clean, rub the oil between your fingers to feel for metal shavings( you dont want any) pull the tranny fluid stick smell it-does it smell fresh or burned. feel it with your fingers for metal shavings.
test all the lights and turn signals, make sure there are no shorts, test ac wipers electric windows etc
look at the tires for wear or uneven wear
look underneath for rust
drive the car, does it wander off the road or track straight
does it shift firmly. check for check engine light
drive the car to a clean area and let it idle, then back up and see what leaked out if anything

Least technologically advanced part of the USA?

Michael

Call me crazy but, I do understand & know clearly how to use technology. I just don't like living in a technology based society. Which places in America still rely on classic rural living? Or which places in Canada? I would like to one day live in a lonely cabin somewhere. I live in Miami/Miami Beach, it's a pretty advanced city. I don't like where were headed as people. Kids starts bitching because they have no cable or the video game system broke. I like the old way of living, I don't mind going the extra mile quilting my own wool clothing or growing my produce or having to find & sanitize my own water. That's cool to me. I would most likely like to be in a lonely cabin in Alaska, just me a dog & a couple of guns. I know I would have to stock up on salt though. I hear about RFID scanners & facial recognition in convenient stores, I don't like that at all. I already know about tha Amish, I don't want to adopt someone elses religion.

Answer
"The United States" is the size of Europe... That covers a MASSIVE amount of ground.

There are still plenty of places that depend far less on technology than others, but even rural farm towns the farmers are using modern technology and advances to bring in more crops.

Even the Amish have made loopholes to use technology... Like you can still have phones as long as they are cordless and the chargers are not connected to the electrical grid... So Solar, wind, and the use of car batteries kept in a shed outside of the home, proper, is acceptable...

And they can still rent and use stores with electricity and electric registers and iPhones, etc. etc. etc.

They believe that electric power lines bring evil INTO THE HOME, so as long as no power lines come INTO THE HOME, It's all good...

They even use GM Crops!

What were houses like in the 1950's in the USA?

Hardcore l

Did they have electricity and indoor plumbing?

What were the rooms like?

Was the house kept tidy?

What kind of cleaning equipment was used?

Did they have vacuum cleaners, bleach and air freshener?

Answer
The houses in the 1950's had plumbing, vacuum cleaners, bleach, air fresheners, automatic washers and dryers and frost less refrigerators. Black and white TVs were in a lot of homes. Window air conditioners were used by a lot of people. The people that did not have ACs lived in houses with big windows and front and back doors that lined up with each other. The opened doors and windows pulled air through the houses. Porches and shade trees were important to keep houses shady and cooler. Box fans were put in windows to pull air inside. Attic fans were used to move air around in the houses.
Houses were different sizes and so were the rooms. Like today. The average amount of kids was four. Three bed rooms was needed. Bunk beds were common. In small towns windows and doors could be left unlocked. Not today. Things can disappear. Car keys could be left in the car. No one would steal them.
Some people had wall to wall rugs, some had carpet, some had linoleum and tile and varnished floors. The non carpet flooring was sweep, mopped and waxed. Wax buffers were used to shine the wax on the floors. Houses were tidy. When the floors were shiny, they looked great. A lot of women stayed at home and took care of the kids and the homes. Homes were kept clean. The rich hired maids. Women had time to have bridge games and other card games.
Skirts and dresses came down way below the knees. Clothes were made from cotton. Clothes were starched in cooked starch then sprinkled with water to make them damp and then ironed. They looked very neat. They were ironed with electric irons. Nylon stockings with seams down the back of the legs were wore. It was very important to keep the seams straight. In the very early 50's men and women wore hats with their suits. Kids wore real leather penny loafers to school that were polished and shiny and wore white bobby socks that were bleached. Men wore a lot of white shirts that were bleached, starched and ironed. And white blouses were popular. They were bleached, starched and ironed. Guys wore short hair. Jeans were starched and ironed. Girls wore different lengths of hair. The hair was rolled with bobby pins to make it curly. And there were electric hair dryers. It was very important to have white things white and clothes ironed and to look very neat.
Olsmobiles cars had 3 or 4 holes on each side of the motor. Each hole stood for a thousand dollars. Cars did not have AC's. Windows were put down and vents under the dash boards could be opened for air to blow in. Small windows by the large windows that were rolled down could be turned toward the face so the air could blow on you. So head scarfs and combs were nessasary to go somewhere.
White cotton sheets were common and they were bleached. They could be put in a dryer or hung on a clothes line to make them really smell fresh. So, bleach was very important then. The white sinks and bath tubs were bleached.

Now in 2011, what's the best hybrid (or full electric) car, out of the BMW/Mercedes/Audi brands? Which model?

Ho Ho Ho

In terms of performances, design, autonomy, environment, fuel mileage ( miles per gallon, or kilometer per liter )etc
And how much is it?

Thank you

Answer
I don't know about hybrids but there no electric cars coming from any of those brands before 2012 and more likely 2014. And as for best hybrid it is a matter of taste and pocketbook. The best place to look is the websites for your brands of interest. If the car is available for sale it will be there with all of the specs.

What to buy; new or old car?

mie90001

What is the best for long term durability, spending/maintainance, and the best reward if decided to sell it after like 5-7 years?
Also what is the best brand for young professionals? I need something small, sporty and luxurious in the same time?
Any thoughts/comments/ideas are appreciated!

Answer
Dear mie90001, Well as you know the more information you give me the better answer I will be able to advice you. First and foremost the most important thing to know when buying a care especially when you are buying a new car the second you sign on that piece of paper your name which is the Title immediately the value of the car drops 20 percent that's is the rule of thumb when ever you are looking to buy a car. Now you mentioned that you are looking to buy either a new or used car well there is a third option which is Pre-Owned dealer car which is the car is used by the dealership like a manager or top sales person who they use that car for their personal use and at the same time it's used as a show car when they drive it from home to work or Vice verse that car will be seen by people who are driving or where that person lives it's another way of Advertising the car without paying money on Ads. that car usually is driven for no more than 3000 miles and but it can not be sold as new since even if you put more than 99 miles on any car no matter if it's registered under the dealer name or anyone person name it's by law called used car.(all will come with bumper to bumper warranty plus under the hood warranty too). So that way the price of the car that 20 percent deduction of it's value is eaten up by the dealer and you still get a car which almost as a new car but less headaches from used one since you will never know the person who is selling his used car what kind of maintenance he or she did for the car. Another issue would you like to have a US made car or no? is your choice a sports car two door cars Four door cars, Electric or gas? if you are thinking in selling the car in 5-7 years and lets say you buy the car within the next 3 to 6 month you will be at a time where the new model cars will be coming out which they usually come out by Sept of every year so 2014 will be on the market by Sept. of 2013 Another issue will be will you like 4 cylinders VS 6 cylinder cars? you have so many questions that need to be answered to give you my best suggestions also if you are trying to keep the car for 5 to 7 years and lets say you have your wife would you try to keep that car for her then you upgrade to another one for yourself since you will have been the only one who driven that car and then you know the good the bad the ugly of that car you don't need then to go buy another car that you know anything about it. As for the brand you have so many to choose you have the BMW GM which now it's number one in the world which used to be Japanese cars. Lexus ES 350 among so many others.you have also leasing a car if the company you work for pays for mileage or gas also if you need that you can deduct it's costs on your federal income tax as a work expense. So please think about all then let me know I will advice you which will be the best choice for you. Good luck best wishes hope to hear from you soon. LET ME KNOW YOUR CHOICES

Do pure electric cars and plug-in cars have a transmission, automatic or standard? Can you buy an electric car?

Steve

with a stick shift?

Answer
"Electric cars" are not a factory produced standard machine. It is a class of vehicle power and there are many variations. Electric vehicles that use a standard electric motor can have that motor installed in a number of locations and this may in part dictate what kind of transmission if any is used.

An EV with wheel motors will have no other drive train components.

An EV with a motor installed in an axle may also have no other drive train components.

An EV with a motor installed between passenger seats will need a rear differential to (un) equalize wheel rotation and may have some gearing to change the motor speed to the drive shaft speed. It is possible to change the performance of the vehicle from power to economy modes with gearing changes but this is more efficiently done electronically so this is the method that is customarily used.

In a petrol vehicle the engine will only reach sufficient torque levels from about 3000 to 5000 RPM. In order to maintain those engine speeds a transmission is used. The electric motor can have full torque at 0 RPM and therefore a transmission may not be necessary and if the Tesla experience is of value it is more trouble than it is worth.

A major class of exceptions is conversion vehicles. These are vehicles that are converted from petrol engines to electric and often leave the transmission in place for the mechanical reverse gear. The clutch is removed as is generally not necessary for shifting. Operators often leave the vehicle in 2ed gear.

I once owned an MG midget with a switch on the dash for directional lights that would not cancel automatically. It was a lot of fun to drive. Similarly model T Fords where the dwell angle could be adjusted from the dash (the spark) would be fun to drive. But extra controls in traffic with kids screaming in the back may not be the choice of many vehicle consumers. We have to pick our vehicles according to what we want from them.

What are 12v kids electric cars like?

Ryan

buying my nephew one for Christmas. He's 3. Any advice also please.

Answer
PLEASE don't buy one for your nephew! I beg you.

1. He's only 3 years old. What are the odds that he is going to drive into something and get hurt?

2. Kids don't get enough exercise as it is, does he really need an electric car where he just sits in it? Get him a tricycle or something like that where he needs to pedal it.

3. I know you want to be the "cool" uncle, but don't you think a 3 year old with an electric car is pretty spoiled and ridiculous?

Get him a toy where he can burn off some energy (like a bike) or can learn something (like a leapfrog).

Answer
A dodge charger vs a STI? those are completely different cars, the STI is a much better car in my opinion though.

The sti and the r/t hemi will have very similar straight line speed, that would be an interesting race. As soon as you hit the corners, the charger won't stand a chance. STI's are meant to be rally cars, they have AWD and will handle corners very well.

I would imagine the sti has a stiffer ride because the suspension is probably a little bit sportier, where as the charger will have softer less performance oriented springs and suspension. Also, the STI has a turbo in it so its easy to tune it and get even more power, but a Turbocharged car isn't as reliable and if the Turbo breaks its a very costly repair.

It all depends on what you're looking for, to sum it up:
STI: Handles better, still fast in a straight line, Better gas mileage, harsh sporty ride
Charger: A little faster in a straight line, smoother/softer ride, etc.

Who thinks we need electric cars now?

Jimz

I think so cuz of global warming and the "Aptera" is the perfect car to drive, it goes 300 miles per charge for a hybrid, and goes 120 miles for all electric, the charging takes a couple of hours and doesn't cost alot to charge (a few dollars) the all electric cost about $26,000 the hybrid cost about $30,000. Think about you don have to buy gas anymore with the all electric you can learn more about this and reserve one now at http://www.aptera.com/ P.S there's also a video on youtube about this car

Answer
What your describing is far from perfect for a vast majority of people. I have 3 kids and a wife, only one of whom will fit in that thing. I don't have off-street parking available, so where do I plug it in? My workplace also does not have dozens of outlets in the parking lot, so same question. I live in Wisconsin, which gets pretty cold. Will the all electric model run at all when it's -10° outside? If I run out of juice halfway to where I'm going, I'll have to sit somewhere (with an outlet) for a "couple hours". Plus, the thing looks like a death trap. I'm not paying $26K for George Jetson's golf cart, no matter how much gas costs.
What I "need" is for our pansy politicians to quit pandering to the environmentalists and start drilling anywhere there's a trace of oil to be found under American soil. By the time all the oil dries up many decades from now, we'll have perfected hydrogen, fuel cells, fusion, or who knows what. It's not like all the oil will just suddenly vanish and the next day we'll be out of gas. Electric is nowhere near a perfect solution right now.

Get my three years old nephew an electric kids car as a Christmas gift?

Vannessa

I'm planning to get my three years old nephew an electric kids car as a Christmas gift. I saw one on Lavadeals.co.uk and I think it's really cool. But I need to know is it safe enough for a kid to drive? Anyone knows?

Answer
I think your nephew will like the kids car because my little brother really likes his. Usually it's safe for kids to drive these cars but there should always be an adult nearby.

Which is better for the woods, nitro or electric rc trucks?

Tyler

I always wanted to try nitro for the first time but I don;t know how good it is in the woods.

I have property around my house (20 acres) full of trails full of hills turns and roots and ruts.

The hills are not terrible steep but you wont see me running up them. I have been eyeing two rc trucks, one electric and one's nitro. My cousin brought his 4x4 rock crawler from amazon and it did great. Didn't get stuck. What would be a batter route to take. I want to take through often.

I don't need something extremely fast, but not extremely slow. I dont want to out walk it when its going up a hill. I know electric would do fine in the trails but i dont know if nitro could.

Here are the trucks I have been looking at.

Nitro- http://www.nitrorcx.com/51c08-savablue-24ghz.html

Electric- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0054WRJ7Q/ref=pe_206800_63132610_em

Answer
I have a battery powered 4WD RC Car with off road tyres that is great on dirt and grass. The battery technology is so good these days that it goes >50km/h which is way too fast for my young kids. Haven't tried the nitro ones as didn't want to mess around with fuel, the extra cost, noise, smell, etc. Good luck!

Does anyone know of this book?

Molly-Kinz

I'm going out on a limb here.
In the 5th grade, about 7 years ago, I read a book about a girl who goes to the mall and sees this electric blue vest. She tries it on and time around her stops. She ends up with the vest and every time she puts it on she has a flashback to a time when her mother was alive. Her mom tells her about some kind of alien invasion and she has to stop it. Later, the girl meets other kids with powers and they fight the aliens in the mall. She sends rc cars and robots to annoy the aliens. At the end the kids steal the alien ship and travel forward in time hundreds of years.
On the cover it had the title written in lightning and the girls hands with electricity arcing from hand to hand.
Near the begining of the book, she's with her dad and the car breaks down. Dad goes to a gasstation leaving her in the car. A bunch of punks walk up and start causing problems. Then they all get struck by lightning.

Answer
I think it might have been the 6th book in the Mind Warp Series.
http://www.amazon.com/Aftershock-Mind-Warp-Chris-Archer/dp/0671014870/

(aditional note: I just read the back of the book on amazon's online reader and it fits with your note about lightning hitting a gang of kids chasing her).

How to build a remote controlled water gun...?

D.Zumwalt

Hello,
I need suggestions on building a little remote controlled water gun that i can use a push button on..im looking for a small electric pump that can be powered by say a car battery?
suggestions where i can find such a pump and any ideas on building one
im putting into the grill of my car, so i need to be able to remote control it

Answer
what size of water gun you needed? Is it big or just like kid's toy?
then, is it possible using cable, or you want control it by signal?

if it is possible to use a long cable, just find something that can be rotating. Simply, make a piston-driven water gun by it, just like piston in car machine.

my kids electric ride on car wont work but works fine with remote?

Stephen

Answer
Make and model of the car would help. Check the connections between the controls and the receiver.

How much does it cost to charge a electric car?

Tommy Padi

Answer
There are several factors that combine to give you the cost of charging your electric car. 1. How much you drive. 2. The cost of the electricity. 3. The efficiency of the vehicle. 4. The ability of the driver. 5. The type of driving. However the EPA combines these numbers to give you information on the sticker of every new electric car to estimate what you might expect to pay for electricity for a year and how this compares with driving a petrol vehicle. They also give you some idea of the vehicle efficiency stated in terms of kWh consumed for 100 miles. (Divide by 100 to get kWh / mile.)1

1. How much you drive can vary a great deal from one person to another. The US average is about 12500 miles or about 34.25 miles per day. With any vehicle the more you drive the more it will cost. On the EPA site they appear to be using 15000 miles for the annual cost. You can personalize this on the site. (see #3 below)

2. The cost of electricity will vary not only in its price but how it is determined. Price will vary with the location. Some utilities ask for higher prices than others. Some customers may be paying commercial rates while others pay residential rates. Some may be charging their vehicle at off peak times with as much as a 50% rate reduction.

Some may charge their vehicles at a public charging station which usually adds a premium to utility pricing. Some may charge at a store or work for "free." Battery leasing is becoming more popular and while the cost of owning the vehicle will be lower the cost of operating the vehicle will increase when you add in the lease for the batteries. Similarly home solar panels might reduce the cost of electricity to zero but the cost of the solar panels could be amortized over the number of miles driven for a similar number. What we often do is use an average of utility prices in doing calculations. Were more exact information is not known the US average is now: 11.61 cents per kWh. http://www.eia.gov/electricity/monthly/epm_table_grapher.cfm?t=epmt_5_6_a

3. Vehicle efficiency is given by the EPA stickers Here is a representative sample: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/PowerSearch.do?action=alts&year1=2012&year2=2013&vfuel=Electric&srchtyp=newAfv EPA cost estimates per year for most electric vehicles is in the $500 to $600 range which is 1/2 to 1/6 other petrol vehicles.

4. Drivers vary in their ability to drive efficiently. Some of us have a lead foot and use "jack rabbit starts" while others refine their ability to save money. Most users of electric vehicles say that the vehicle instrumentation favors a re education towards economy. But using the torque of an electric motor can be just too much fun to resist. The EPA tries to give us an average in their estimates. Some have refined their driving ability using hypermiling techniques and enormously increase their fuel economy: http://ecomodder.com/forum/EM-hypermiling-driving-tips-ecodriving.php

5. Just like the driving distance, how hard the vehicle must work will affect the range. In any vehicle going uphill 20 miles will cost more than doing the same distance downhill. For all vehicles fuel economy drops with a lot of starts and stops. But the electric car has a secret weapon. It uses the stopping to recharge some energy into the battery. This gives the overall appearance of a higher efficiency when traveling in cities. EPA numbers reflect this odd result for electric vehicles.

There are things we can do to make the driving less economical, changing the aerodynamics with a convertible top down or windows open, heat and air conditioning are all examples. In general especially hot or cold weather may effect an EV fuel economy.

What is all comes down to is about 2 to 6 cents per mile for fuel and slightly more if you are amortizing the cost of batteries or other equipment.

ideas for electric cars and increasing range?

Daniel

Ok so ive seen some of these electric cars and have seen some things that make me think, huh what if they did this. Here is a list.

1. I've noticed a lot of electric cars there front ends are rather dull and have no intake into the engine. What if we took car design like those we see today and their radiator grills and instead of putting in a radiator put in a wind turbine to power the batteries. This would increase drag, but would the increase in drag really damage the increased electricity output from the wind turbine and even the increase in drag it should be very little since the air has to leave too and if enough research is done could the drag actually be very minute. I could see if a car was going freeway speeds wind would be entering the wind turbine at 65 mph + and even though the generator is much smaller than the giant winds used to power homes, wouldn't this overall increase the range?

2. Solar panels. Only one car I know of has solar panels and that is the fisker karma. Solar panels are getting quite cheap so couldn't they shape them into the roof line and even possibly the hood and other body panels.

3. alternators or some sort of generator on the axle. I read somewhere else that this wouldn't actually work and would consume more energy as the battery efficiency and alternator efficiency is not quite there yet, but if the efficency were to increase could that be more beneficial.

Im not complaining, but i know i dnt have the power or resources or know how to do these things and test them and they are just ideas. If any one who reads this does have the resources to have these tested and create more efficent electric vehicle. please feel free. tell me what you think of these ideas.

Answer
It is good that you consider options, however some understanding of the work that has been done before will allow you to work on the edge of what is known rather than simply "reinventing the wheel."

In the study of physics there are long established rules that predict how our world operates. One of those is known as the law of conservation of energy. Briefly it says that energy cannot be created or destroyed (only conserved.) For this reason we can never get more energy out of a vehicle than we put into it. Any additional energy would have to come from a different source.

Another way of looking at the problem is to notice that the energy to make a car move must overcome various forms of resistance. The tendency for a car to stay put is one called inertia. Gravity, rolling resistance, wind resistance, and internal mechanical resistance are others. We can recover some of the energy put into making the car move. But tapping into the inertia of a vehicle will slow it down. The practical application is regenerative braking. The same may be said for trying to capture the air moving around a moving car from inside the vehicle. Neither of these approaches will give more range than could be calculated from the energy put into the vehicle. We can only hope to make the vehicle more efficient. But as the electric car is already about 90% efficient there is not a great deal of room for improvement.

So we need to gather more energy for more range. Better batteries that hold more will do this but at some increase in weight. Solar panels will add only a very little because calculations and some experimentation has shown that most commercial vehicles could only add about 2 to 3 miles of travel for each hour that they sit in the sun. The solar panels are too inefficient, the sun's energy too diffuse and the area of a vehicle too limited. Only by designing super efficient, single seater, aerodynamic vehicles like solar racers can we get the sun to power a vehicle, but this is not the typical family vehicle. ( see the American Solar Challenge and the Australian World Solar Challenge )

Another alternative is to transmit power to the vehicle. This has been done with overhead wires, but more recently the power has been transmitted through the roadway. (Korean http://www.businessinsider.com/south-korean-roads-power-electric-cars-2013-8 )

Another solution like solar vehicle is to create energy on the vehicle using a hybrid engine, a fuel cell or perhaps someday an atomic battery: http://www.technologyreview.com/news/404293/the-atomic-battery/

Which of these cars would you?

Krazyk78

Which of these cars would you buy and why?

a) toyota camry
b) toyota prius
c) subaru legacy
d) honda accord
e) honda civic.

thanks for your opinions.

Answer
if I have a family (i.e., kids, wife) i would choose the Camry or Accord depending on the price tag. I like both of these cars because they are very reliable, safe, good on gas consumption. If well maintained these two manufacturers can last up to 15+ years or 200k+ miles easily. Ohh! these are facts by the way there are data proving these claims (Consumer's Report). In the long run you can save thousands of dollars because you don't have to buy another car for the next decade.

Now, if I was still young and active the Honda Civic will be my choice to drive around the cities because this car is very popular amongst the 18+ age group. This is also a good second car or a daily driver, meaning you can drive to work and school everyday without worrying about breaking down on you. The car is very lightweight and small that it will save you money on gas.

As of today, Toyota Prius is the ultimate electric-gas powered (Hybrid) vehicle in today's automotive market. Environmentalist like this particular model because it's practically almost emission-less. The technological combination of electric and gas translates to less emission of carbon monoxide, which is the leading cause of global warming. In addition, this car can also save you gas money.

Can I put a 12v car battery in a kids electric jeep?

Steam

I was recently given two electric ride on toys for kids. Both a beat up pretty bad but the motors work, batteries don't. The factory batteries are expensive sooooo.... I was wondering if a car/atv/motorcycle/ battery would work? The originals were 12v. I do know there is a safety issue as far as liquid acid from gel acid but I have a container solution for that. I'm more curious about it exploding, lighting on fire or another unforeseen issue. Any thoughts before I try it? Don't answer if you are going to say " don't ever use anything but factory approved blah blah blah.." These are junk and the " you cant do that " crowd does not interest me unless it is backed up by scientific fact. Kids will not be driving these either. Any other junk yard tinkerers out there with some sage words of advice?
12v all the way, not Power Wheels plus the batteries are clearly labeled. Gotta say I love the actual experience with the John deer. Like it was brought up do u know if he had a problem with the battery lasting over multiple charges?

Answer
Yes it will work for sure. My father inlaw has a john deere toy tractor for his nieces that runs on a car battery. That thing runs for ever too instead of the 15-20 minutes the factory battery is good for. Just every once in a while you will have to hook it up to a car battery charger. They can be expensive, hope you have one. The kids will love you for it. Lol. Good luck.

How much does it cost?

keh

To raise a child? From pregnancy to like 18 years old? What's a rough estimate for how much that costs? This is for a health class by the way. I'm only 15...nowhere near having kids.

Answer
Thousands and thousands of dollars! Here are just some examples, this is not everything by any means! And I am just estimating in cost by the way!

Food: $60/week (or more depending on age) * 52 weeks a year= $3,120 * 18 years= $56,160
Clothing: $200-2000/year (depending on age and size) * 18 years= $3,600-36,000
Shoes: $50/year (sometimes more) * 18 years= $900
Toiletries (toilet paper, body wash, shampoo, deodorant, etc) $50/month (depending on age and need, etc) * 12 per year= $600 * 18 years= $10,800
School supplies (not counting school fees because they differ per state and grade): $100/ year of school * 13 grade ( not counting re-takes, or preschool)= $1,300
Shelter expense (differes per family, but mine for instance): (rent is $560/month divided by 3 family members= $187) $187/month * 12 per year= $2,244 * 18 years= $40,392
Bills (split as the rent was in my case): (electric bill $120/month (all other utilities paid in my case) divided by 3 members= $40/month) $40/month * 12 per year= $480 * 18 years= 8,640
Car (if you buy them one, my parents did not): $2,000-$10,000
Gifts: (depending on age, spending limits, wants, needs, etc): $300( 200 for christmas and 100 for birthdays) per year * 18= $5,400

So just for that stuff, not counting everything else that is paid for for a child, and as I said those are estimations, very low for some, we come to a total of: $129,192 - 169,592 for one child from birth to age 18. Don't forget any medical bills, bills for the mother to have the baby, medications, etc!

Costs to raise a child?

Avengeful

For a health project I have to research the costs of raising a child. Please answer all the costs listed.

Prenatal care ages 0-18
obstetrical care ages 0-18
medical care & insurance for child ages 0-18
food costs ages 0-18
clothing costs ages 0-18
housing costs (mortage or rent) per year for 18 years
housing utility costs (heat, electric, gas) for 18 years
transportation (cars, gas, maintenance, insurance) for 18 years
recreation/entertainment for 14 years
public education (school supplies, field trips, extra activities) for 13 years
college?????

Total =

Also if you could please answer these questions too.

Babies sleep how often?
feed how often?
change diapers/ bathe how often?
necessary medical care?
costs of baby food?/ costs of breast feeding?
bonding activities?
what do new born babies do?
supplies needed for a new born baby in first week of being home?

Thanks to all the people who help me with this.
Yeah I don't get the point of this either. We are supposed to interview 3 parents to find this out but I thought it would be easier to go on here, considering all my friend's parents don't think the best of me.

Answer
For prenatal care, and all other costs for the mother and child....it depends on insurance. My insurance covered 100% of everything. Prenatal costs, delivery, my stay and my daughter's stay in the hospital, her well-baby check ups, her specialist visits and her vaccinations...It was all covered with no co-pay. I've seen a lot of women on here say they had to pay 20% of all their prenatal care and delivery though.

There is NO way of calculating raising a child from birth to 18. It all depends on your lifestyle, where you live, how many kids you have, if you get child support, if you make them buy their own car and pay their own college tuition...it depends on a million different things.

Babies sleep how often?
Depends. My daughter slept though the night from day one. Most babies wake up for a while though at night. When she was younger she took three naps a day. She's two now and only takes one nap.

feed how often?
Depends on the baby. Some babies feed every hour, some every three hours. It depends on the baby's schedule.

change diapers/ bathe how often?
I change diapers every 2-3 hours. When she was a baby I'd wash her every other day. She's two now and she gets a bath every day.

necessary medical care?
Babies get check ups every few months until they hit two, then it's usually once a year.

costs of baby food?/ costs of breast feeding?
I think we spent like...$20-25 a week total on formula and baby food.

what do new born babies do?
Eat, sleep, poop.

supplies needed for a new born baby in first week of being home?
Clothes, diapers, a crib/bassinet, blankets...

32 year old with financial question?

Justin

I am 32 years old and I here is my run down... kinda a sat situation but can only blame myself cause I was stubborn.

I helped my parents and siblings out for most of my working career and pretty much got nothing in the deal and to sum it up, my parents are in their mid 60's and will never climb out of their debt, same for my siblings. I was stubborn the many years I helped them out and put myself into a jam throughout. I promised myself, and them, that I am no longer going to help them out financially wise, and will only help when it does not involve monetary things.

So here is my situation... not that its bad but I feel like I should be so further around. I am single but definitely looking and want marriage and kids and the rest one day soon when I find the right person.

I am 32 and make 63k a year as an IT administrator. That is good salary for me for not having a college degree etc.. but have worked at my place for 7 years now and going strong.
I have a car payment of 7300 left - I bought a 2010 car 2 years ago.
I have zero credit cards, and owe zero debt besides that. Only thing I owe is my car and rent and bills which go to about 1200/month and that includes cell phone, food, rent etc... and my car payment of 375/month so about 1600-1700 total after everything. I bring in about 3300/month clear.

I am assuming that being 32 and no debt is really good at least right? Its all I got positive to look at :-)
Also with my total income and expenses, and I still comfortable and able to live a somewhat comfortable life at this point? Just need some guidance please. Thank you!

Answer
A. Get out of debt, don't take on more debt.
B. Save money by cutting down on excess (do you really need that cellphone plan, cable, new sunglasses etc... Also, do you really need to be eating out?)
C. Invest in yourself. I cannot stress this enough, anything to better yourself, network, and improve your financial situation (I doubt you'll find many millionaires with stale personalities). You have to hang out people you aspire to be like, not losers. And if you're asked for help, maybe you'll get a chance to ask for advice.
D. Educate yourself on investing. Seriously. If you started ten years ago, you would be a millionaire by now. Set aside 25 percent (or more) of your salary per month. As for the stocks to invest in, you're going to just have to figure that out yourself.

Are your parents and siblings distasteful people? If so, I urge you to distance yourself from them. More than likely, they are using you--draining your bank account and your emotional energy.

Where is your money really going? Subscriptions, car payment, tv, electric, eating out, movies, entertainment?

I suggest you get on a budget. You need to take care of what's important and ask yourself if those two meals/wk outside the home are worth 10x potential earnings.

Buck up. Game's not over yet.

What kind of car should I get?

ScorpioChi

So, my parents are getting me a car. With that being said, I do work and I will be paying the car payments including for gas and car mechanical failures. I am 16 and this is NOT my first car. Yes, my parents don't mind spending money, etc. on me obviously and I was just wondering from your opinion - what kind of car I should get or what do you think is better.

*NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT HOW YOU SAY RICH KID AND PARENTS WHO WILL DO ANYTHING FOR THEIR KID, ETC. THAT'S VERY RUDE!* (Yes, I said it in all caps haha!)

I was looking at these cars:
2012 Chevy Volt
2012 Hyundai Tucson
2012 Hyundai Sonata
2012 Cadillac SRX
2012 BMW X6M
2012 Porsche Cayenne
2012 Porsche Panamera
2011 BMW M3
2012 Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG
2012 Lexus IS F

MY OPINION:
I have close enough in money to afford a Porsche Panamera & Porsche Cayenne because I have been modeling and acting and I have been saving up with that money since I was 10 when I started. I still do modeling and acting but, little of it now since booking have been slow so I got myself a job at a local restaurant and at a lawyers office. I am home schooled so I have enough time to work, etc.

HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN:
For value and performance overall, especially for a car that I would like to keep for years from now, what car should I get?

I KNOW: You are going to say also, what is she doing driving a high performance, luxury or everyday car if she doesn't even know how to drive and she is just 16. In my state, the driving age is 14. I have never been involved in a car accident, never caused one and have never gotten any points taken off my license. I know how distracting it is to have friends in the car as my friend has died from that fatal accident but, I honestly don't drive with friends in the car. I only drive with family members in the car or on my own. No music. Just listening to that good old sound of car horns and the environment. (:

From your point of view, like I said, which is better? Please no negativity. Just answers. I know someone is going to put something negative on this post but, I did ask for an answer. I did not however ask for a mean one.

I hope you reply with what you think! Thanks! (:

*p.s. I know that I will have to go to driving school if I wanted to drive a high performance vehicle to know how to control the car, etc.* #JustSaying. (:
@mechanic_girl_C: Thanks for responding! (: I'll keep the Hyundai's in mind. ^_^
@iwastypingthat: Yes. No music seriously. (: Thanks for responding also! ^_^ I'll keep what you mentioned in mind about resale and safety with those cars.
@Raff: Thanks for responding! (: Ouch! That's off of my list for good. Haha yes, I do actually. ^_^
@apeweek: I've read through the information given on the volt and yes, it's reliable & very safe, etc. but I have come to the conclusion to just leave the volt off of my list. I did go down to test drive the Volt today and it's not really for me. It's safe, has the features but it also balls down to how much room is in the vehicle. It's great for someone who wants something small but I like to have a more space. (:
@GM Customer Svc: Thanks for the information on the SRX. (:

Answer
You should get a Chevy Volt. I'm sure this will make many readers scream, but hear me out. There is independent support for this position.
*
Consumers Reports has the Volt as one of their "recommended" cars. In fact the Volt is the ONLY recommended American car in the small car category. See link:
*
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/types/new-models-by-category.htm
*
The Volt in fact came in first place - beating every other car Consumer Reports tracks - in their Buyer Satisfaction survey. See link:
*
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-57334967-48/chevy-volt-scores-highest-satisfaction-rating-in-consumer-reports-survey/7
*
It also aced their first year reliability rankings. Note that Consumer Reports did not initially like the Volt - they trashed it in an article after the car first came out. But after testing it for a few months, they radically changed their opinion. This is the key - test drive one and see for yourself.
*
Volt got top 5-star scores in safety testing from both NHTSA and the Insurance Institute - see link (yes, recent "Volt fire" stories are sheer nonsense):

And

*
The Volt's little secret is that this is a wickedly fun-to-drive car, great acceleration, full of technological gadgets, and it attracts a lot of attention. Driving past gas stations is fun, too.
*
Plus - it's not even as expensive as most people assume. Depending on your driving pattern - and taking into account that electricity is much cheaper than gasoline - the total cost of ownership could even be cheaper than a comparable car. Below is a spreadsheet where you can input your own driving needs and see what kind of car is cheapest to drive:

Yes, I own one. It's the best car I have ever owned. If you go with a Volt, be prepared for arguments with everybody. Do your research so you can answer your critics. This is a great car, the car of the future.

Electric Cars?

john disqu

My wife and I are in the market for an electric car. - The problem is; they all look pathetic.

Does anyone know of any model of E-Car that doesn't look like a toy or was designed by some plastic, retarded robot?

Something sporty would be preferred.

Thank you for your time.

Answer
you could always build your own.

http://www.evalbum.com/cntrl/CAFE/

the problem with most of the electric cars on the market today is that they are limited to 25 MPH, federal regulations, and the short range.
These regulations are on full production E-Car but do not apply to Kit car, in other word a car that you have to spend some time putting together your self.

help about electric cars?

anthony b

i would like to no what age and whats sort of license an electric cars needs

Answer
An electric car is a motor vehicle. As such it would be subject to the laws of your area that govern all motor vehicles.

There may be some exceptions in the law for vehicles with less than 4 wheels, or that go under a certain speed. Toys that are intended to be unmanned or for toddlers may also be exceptions. In some places there are exceptions also for vehicles that have no or only very limited access to public roadways.

You might check with local enforcement or insurance agencies for more details.

What are the best car brands?

Rahm

Answer
depends on what you want.
if you want sheer speed at a good price the Nissan GT-R is hard to beat but it can't go off road or carry many kids around.

personally i think the best overall car is the Tesla Model S P85+. it's large and spacious for storage. it can carry 5+2 people so it does the same job as a minivan, it's fast (as fast 0-60 acceleration as an audi R8), it's safe (highest rated crash test results ever, in fact it even broke the roof drop testing machine while passing the test), it's efficient (being completely electric with a more than usable range the cost to run the model S is much lower than a regular gasoline car), it's good looking (though it might not be the best looking car ever made, it's the best all electric car available making it desirable), it's innovative and has the highest ownership satisfaction of any car.

sure there are cars that can do some of these things better than the Tesla but they usually lack a lot of other things that the tesla excels at.

hybrid electric cars and cost and building one?

Ashley1nOn

i was wondering im only a teen.. i wondered if you are driving the electric cars/gas....yes you are saving money on gas... but how much oney are you having to spend on your home electric bill just to recharge your car.. different areas have different price in electric bills and where i live the price is pretty steep. .so just charing the car is going to cost you home wise....then of course you have to pay for all of the instalation of the elctric system.. you have to get the battery change out...i have heard that there rattled in these hybrid cars when the swtich from gas and go to electric...

my main question is.... are you really saving when you buy hybrid cars........or should you wait on the hybrid cars to come out(later date) so all the kinks in the car are gone...

also wih building a car.. a group of kids and i have a dodge challenger(mine 09 suppercharged i got a new one cult enegry10 srt8 yayyyyme) but what we have done was get a used hhybrid car and took the battery out we have been working on the car for a while to get it to efficenly work on the challenger... it runs smooth and great.... the only problem is that you have to switch it over to hybrid or gas before you turn the car on.... we were wondering is there anyway we could get the car to switch over while the car is on say we are at a red light and want to to it back to gas... what would be a better way to have it.. its a diesel hybrid what we call it.. we did alot of modifacation to make sure it works properly and runs smooth because we still wanted a hot muscle car sound...

so is there anyway we can get the car to switch over while we are driving....

thank you very much,
the future of cars

sorry for my bad spelling

oh and we can get the car to get 23mpg on the electric and 17mpg for just the gas

Answer
You pay 1/4 as much (to go the same distance in the same car) for electric as you do for gas.

Installing a 220V 30A breaker doesn't cost much at all. That can charge an electric car at 15 miles per hour (15 miles of range for each hour of charge). That's as much as you need. For faster charging than that you need to install a special box.

Hybrid cars will get less expensive as the price of the batteries goes down. How much you save in gas depends on the price of gas and how much you drive. Can you predict what the price of gas will be in the next 7 years? Of course not, no one can. But I'll tell you this, it aint going to go down. At $4.00 per gallon, your savings in gas usually out weighs the higher car payment.

Listen dude, we don't know what components you're using in your car or how you have it wired up. How are we supposed to know how to rewire your own creation? But I'll tell you this, taking off from a red light, it's better to have electric and diesel at the same time as opposed to just diesel.

People often think of hybridizing as a way of saving fuel, but that's not actually the case. It's a way of increasing the power without burning that much more fuel. Some car manufacturers use it as a way of getting super high gas mileage by using a super small engine and still having enough power to move. But you could just as easily use it as a speed mod. Like a super charger or nitrous, only instead of burning more fuel and shortening the life of your engine, you burn the same amount and lengthen the life of your engine.

How many electric cars sold in 2011?

omg ;O

Answer
This is a more difficult question to answer than it might seem. Most of us have heard of two relatively mainstream electric cars, the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt. However, there are a few dozen smaller electric car companies, all of which sold some cars in 2011, but most of these smaller companies don't provide sales figures.
*
In addition, the problem doesn't just involve electric cars sold in the United States. India is a large and growing market for cars, and some electric car companies (such as Mahindra Reva) target India and Europe. Likewise, China set an ambitious goal to put 500,000 electric cars or hybrids on the road in 2011. They have not met this goal (by far), but they are not exactly anxious to issue a press release on how far off they were.
*
So in the end, I'm going to give you a pure guess.
*
It looks like Leaf sales will reach about 8000 sales, and Volt sales maybe 7000 by the end of December. We'll say about 5000 various battery EVs built in China. And another 5000 for India. Then for two dozen very small EV manufacturers, about 500 sales apiece.
*
Wild guess total: about 26,000 electric vehicles sold in 2011. I think this is a minimum. My numbers for China and India could be low.
*
In addition, 2012 sales of EVs will surely be much, much bigger, as 2011 has been the "ramp up" year for some EV models. Both GM and Nissan have stated their intentions to build many times the number of EVs they made in 2011. Plus many new EV models are slated for introduction in 2012. China is not backing away from their 500,000 goal either.

who invented electric cars?

Kendal

What country invented electric cars and which country uses them the most?

Answer
Electric taxicabs were the first electric cars, built by the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company of Philadelphia starting in 1896, and used on the streets of New York to deal with the "horse pollution" of the day.
*
The country with the most electric vehicles presently is probably the United States. There are several thousand hobbyist electric cars on the road in the US, joined in 2011 by several thousand Nissan Leafs and Chevy Volts.
*
However, the lead in electric vehicles may not last long. China plans to invest over $15 billion in electric car infrastructure, and sales of the Leaf and Volt will target Europe in 2012, which is likely to be a prime market for electric vehicles - as gasoline is much more expensive in most countries outside of the US. Other electric vehicles in development at various car manufacturers have Europe and Asia as primary marketing targets.

Are electric cars heavy?

crackerjac

And if so, how is the safety subpar compared to piston driven cars?

Answer
Electric cars are slightly heavier than petrol counterparts. Although the electric motor is about 1/4 the the weight of a petrol engine the batteries are far heavier than a fuel tank.

However this weight is generally placed much lower to the ground than in a petrol vehicle. This gives the electric vehicle an unusual amount of stability. Some electric vehicles are virtually un-tipable and with the right tires will have great traction in rain and snow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=endscreen&v=2ZFsevYIcpM By comparison an SUV will tend to tip over more easily than most cars due to its higher center of gravity.

Weight is only one factor when considering the safety of a vehicle. Physics dictates that a heavier vehicle will absorb more energy due to its inertial mass. While this suggests that the vehicle may sustain less damage this is not necessarily the case for the occupants. Statistics show that you are slightly more likely to die in an SUV. http://thedetroitproject.com/readmore/myths.htm

Old crash tests only used male dummies while newer tests have included a dummy supposed to represent the size and weight of a female passenger. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2011/08/crash-test-101/index.htm

Crash tests of electric cars show that commercial highway rated vehicles perform very well, but as expected cheaper models, sold as low speed vehicles do not perform as well. http://blogs.wsj.com/drivers-seat/2011/04/26/electric-cars-fare-well-in-crash-tests/

Any electric cars comming to market in 2011 in canada?

unplugged

other than the volt?

thanks!

Answer
Not that I've heard. Currently there only 3 car models available for purchase by the public, the Nissan Leaf, the Chevy Volt (not really an electric car) and the Tesla roadster. Both Nissan and GM are playing availability games. If you don't have a reservation on the Leaf now, no car until 2012. GM is only planning to make 10,000 Volts and is only planning to sell them in select cities (mine isn't one of them). That leaves only the Tesla roadster. Tesla makes no bones about it, if you cough up the $110K you can have the car anywhere that the local government isn't blocking sales.
