I remember a song I liked in the morning scene in Cheaper By The Dozen. I haven't seen the movie in a while so I don't remember the details, but I'm pretty sure it was closer to the beginning of the movie and remember liking the song. I searched the songs in the movie and it wasn't one of them, so perhaps it was too obscure to make anyone's list. Help would be appreciated.

Why is health insurance so expensive?

flawless12

Why is health insurance so expensive? It seems as though on an average people are paying close to $375 a month for it and when it comes time to getting a procedure done or any kid of testing, you end up paying more. What do you guys think?

Answer
Inflation affects insurance companies as well as hospitals, Doctors too. Hospital wages, equiptment, electric, gas, food, etc, etc, takes the price billed to the insurance companies up and so it is passed down to the consumer (you and me). The hospital I use just took up the cost of everything, rooms, testing, and I imagine everything they could.. So, I know I will soon be seeing an increase in the insurance premiums. If my hospital is raising prices they won't be the only ones to do it. Things like people not paying what they owe, defrauding insurance companies, like the guy on YQA who wants to pull a bump and run with his car to defraud the car insurance. These things will bring up the premiums we all pay. As far as I am concerned Insurance Companies are a Scab on the face of the Earth!!!!! They are a rip off, if their profits are not in the billions and billions they will keep raising the premiums and always have a good excuse for doing so. God forbid you are really sick and have to use your insurance, say Cancer, eventually your insurance is cancelled or you can't afford it anylonger. Once your insurance is cancelled, you are Cancer free and try to get insurance once again......NOT.....they ask you the question have you ever had Cancer? Answer yes, you are flatly refused or given a rate for the insurance which is so high you can't afford it. Answer No, be lieing and get caught you will have to pay everything and anything back they have paid or go to jail for insurance fraud. What we need in the United States is Nationalized Medical Care like they have in Canada and several other countries. The lobbyist for the insurance companies will never let that happen, their industry lives in Washington DC giving perks to every Congressman and Senator they can. The pharmacutical companies have done the samething. They were able to get a bill passed that effectively made it so they can continue to raise ther prices as they deem necessary. Medicare, now gets no deals from the drug companies in order to keep the prices down to the consumers. I know for sure that the VA is still getting deals, they wouldn't go along with them. There were quite a few others that are affected as well. However the bill was worded I can't say, but the one thing I do know is that it screws the consumer and keeps the drug companies with ridiculously high profits. At the same time there were many Congressmen and Senators who retired after this bill was passed, and were hired by the drug companies as lobbyist, at least 12 of them retired. These are politicians who pushed hard and called in favors from all the collegues to get the bill passed. It smells a little fishy to me.....like a conflict of interest....especially if these politicians knew they were going to be hired as lobbyists. Old GWB said afterwards that if he realized what was going on he would have done something to stop it. Why doesn't he have a 10 million dollar investigation that will go nowhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The people making up the wild and crazy claims about "doomsday" in 2012 are grifters and liars. Some want your money (BUY MY BOOK!) and some just want notoriety. The claims themselves are nonsense. It is INSULTING to anyone with even a High School education in science that these people are allowed to espouse and print such ridiculous lies.

If I claimed that tomorrow the Sun would turn pink and bunnies would take over the world, you might suggest that I seek psychological help, yet when someone like Patrick Geryl says that "streams of positive ions will push the South Pole over making the Earth flip" like a pancake... or a crepe (he IS Belgian), you hardly EVER hear anyone say "Is he forgetting to take his meds?" It is just silly!

So often in Y!A we hear people say "scientists say..." or "look at the evidence that civilizations collapse every 3600 years" when NOT ONE of these people have ever even taken a science class. That much is obvious. Please disregard any such statements and only treat claims with some citations as at all likely. For example there is a nice NASA site in astrobiology which debunks nearly ALL the 2012 claims very neatly... and don't forget Penn & Teller! They show, with a healthy dollop of humor, just how laughable all the hoaxers are.... I LOVED the guy with the styrofoam balls on the strings!

Don't worry about 2012. Worry about your kids growing up to be sociopaths or not growing up at all simply because you forget to buckle them in your car. Worry about the government selling mining rights to big oil companies that want to drill for Natural Gas within a mile of old atomic bomb tests. What are the good restaurants at Epcot and Hollywood Studios in Disney?

Yvonne Ces

Is the restaurant where you sit in car seats any good? Has anyone ever eaten there?

Answer
There are a few restaurants in each park that are very good places to eat. Here are a few of our favorites:

Disney Studios:

Sci-Fi Drive in - eat in cars while watching old sci-fi movie footage. Food was great, price not outrageous (as compared to other Disney restaurants), and the atmosphere was really cool. We ate here when we visited in March, and my kids loved it.

50's Prime Time Cafe - Eat in a kitchen with "Mom" or "Auntie" as your server. Better eat all your veggies and keep your elbows off the table, or you will hear about it. Food was good, pretty much what you would expect from a 50's type restaurant.

Hollywood Brown Derby - Signature dining for Disney. More of an upscale place to eat. Good food, but more of a fancy meal than a fun one, in my opinion.

Mama Melore's Restorante Italiano - Outstanding italian food, Great atmosphere.

Epcot:
Le Celier - Canada - Good steakhouse. The food was excellent and the price was not as bad as I expected, for a restaurant on Disney property.

Nine Dragons restaurant - China- some of the best Chinese food that I have ever had. Nice selection, decent prices.

La Cantina De San Angel - Mexico - Excellent for Mexican cuisine, and I am not a big fan of the spicy food. You sit along a waterway and eat with an exploding volcano in the background. One of our top 5 in all of Disney.

Biergarten restaurant - Germany - I love German food, and this buffet was worth every penny.

The only restaurant I do not recommend in Epcot is the Electric Umbrella or the American Pavillion in the U.S.A. These were not so good when we tried them, food was dry an pretty tasteless, not worth the money.

Those are our favorites for the places you asked about, but there are a whole bunch more. I would suggest checking out the disboards. The disboards is a message boards website all about going to Disney. You can get restaurant reviews and suggestions, resort reviews, tips for avoiding crowds, and more info than you can possibly imagine. I would also check out the Disney website and use their dining finder. Tons of info there as well.

Hope this helps, have a great trip!

What are some effective but easy ways people can save energy?

ksenia

Answer
Monitor your electricity use by buying a Kill-A-Watt or other such monitor.

http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/kill_a_watt_electric_usage_monitor_review

'An average household uses about 4300kWh of electricity each year. This results in emissions of over 2 tonnes of CO2 per household, or ¾ tonne per person - just for domestic electricity supply. In comparison, total CO2 emissions per person in the UK are around 10 tonnes, and emissions per person in India are about 1 tonne. Luckily, it is possible to cut domestic electricity use in half with simple energy efficiency measures.
'This table shows how electricity use is divided up in an average house (excluding electric heating):

Lighting 19%
Cold Appliances 18%
Wet Appliancs 15%
Cooking 15%
Consumer Electronics 19%
ICT (computers, etc) 9%
Other 5%'

How many miles can a gas engine car go before refueling? _______An electric car?_____ A hybrid car?______

Answer
it depends on the design.
the larger the gas tank or batteries the farther it will go,
some tractor trailer trucks can go 3000 miles without a refill.
most gas cars are 200 to 300 miles
most electrics are 20 to 500 miles
hybrid car, no clue. but there is only about 5 on the market right now, should be possible to look up.

How far can a electric car go...?

Kiki

Is a electric hybrid car good for roadtrips? Also when do you think we cam finally stop relying on gas and start using a better source of clean sources that don't effect the earth?

Answer
They can go a couple of miles for every kilowatt hour of energy the batteries hold. I is practical for a car with a LiFePo battery pack to have a 100 mile range. That gives you the best balance of range, efficiency and performance. With lead acid batteries, 40 miles gives you the best balance. The Tesla Roadster has some more expensive batteries (somewhat ahead of it's time), and it has a good balance with a 200 mile range.

They are not good for road trips unless you bring some kind of generator along with you, temporarily making your electric car into a series hybrid.

Batteries will replace gas when it's obvious to most people that they are better and more convenient. This will happen when charge time is cut down by about 75% and price comes down on those batteries with the energy density of the Tesla's batteries, probably within a few decades.

Where are the battery packs made for electric/hybrid vehicles in the United States?

best electric hybrid cars 2012 image

Many times the car or the design of the battery pack may be in the United States, but the pack itself may be made in some 2nd or 3rd World country like China or somewhere in SE Asia or in some other country without the regulations that the Unites States has. I ask because, as many people know, batteries have toxic chemicals in them and you need these chemicals to make the batteries. Also, what happens when they aren't used anymore? In other words, after the lifespan of the battery pack, what happens to it? Is it recycled or does something else happen to it?

Answer
Each company who makes an electric or hybrid car needs batteries. That component part can be sourced domestically, internationally or some combination. Each company will no doubt be trying to save as much money as possible as they strive for a part that also has a high degree or reliability.

Nissan has chosen to make the batteries for the all electric leaf in the US at a new factory that has been built in Tennessee. http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/13/nissan-battery-plant-begins-operations-in-tennessee/

What is a "toxic chemical?" You might be surprised that the list includes things we use all the time including:

laundry detergent
gasoline
ammonia
toilet bowl cleaner
motor oil
rubbing alcohol
bleach

http://chemistry.about.com/od/toxicchemicals/f/What-Is-A-Toxic-Chemical.htm Some of the things are only "toxic" if we contact them in a specific way. So just saying something is "toxic" sounds bad but it is really not a complete picture. Lead acid batteries are "toxic" as they contain both lead and acid. But they are also more than 95% recycled. So the overall track record is quite good. And this also has set up an understanding and a formula for dealing with other often "less toxic" chemistry's in batteries with a newer technology intended for electric vehicles.

Such batteries for the EV are expected to last for more than 8 years or 100,000 miles (the warranty) at which time they will be reduced to about 70% to 80% of their like new capacity. There is a potential useful life for the batteries in stationary applications. (computer and telecommunications equipment UPS ) but they may also be recycled depending upon where there is more value. Either way they certainly won't be thrown into any landfill (see below).

Are pure electric cars and plug-in hybrid electric cars easier and cost less to maintain? Do they still have?

Edward

radiators, spark plugs, motor oil? When the battery in a plug-in hybrid electric car runs low, does the car automatically start the onboard generator without the driver doing anything? How long does it take to recharge a electric car to travel 15 miles roundtrip to work?

Answer
Electric cars are operated by electric motors. This is a fundamentally different engine than the heat producing internal combustion engine. They are essentially permanently lubricated and therefore don't require oil changes for the engine. Electric motors do not burn a fuel so do not require spark plugs. They are rotary engines so operate virtually vibration free and silent so do not need tune ups or mufflers. Commercial vehicles like the Nissan Leaf have regenerative braking so they are very light on the traditional brake system causing far less maintenance. One owner of a RAV4ev said that he did not have to perform any vehicle maintenance for over 5 years.

"Pure electric cars" as the term is used are battery electric cars that do not have a traditional engine or a generator. The power is transmitted to the vehicle and stored in batteries. Some electric vehicles may have a radiator that is used for liquid cooling of the battery system. The volt does but the Leaf has an air cooled battery system.

Some vehicles like the Volt are closer to series hybrids than a pure electric car. They have an electric motor that is the primary mover for the vehicle. They also have the traditional engine with all its associated maintenance. They never require charging to operate but the batteries will only last about 40 miles. After this the engine starts a generator automatically to continue the operation of the electric motor.

Parallel hybrids like the Prius are never plugged in and charge the vehicle when less energy is needed to power the vehicle. All energy comes from the fuel. (although the 2012 version can be plugged in for some fuel savings.)

Electric cars economy and charge times will vary. The Nissan Leaf EPA rating is 34 KW-hr to travel 100 miles or .34 kWh /mile. A 15 mile journey would then require (15 x .34=) 5.1 kW hr. You need to add about 5% for charger inefficiency so the total charge required would be approximately 5.36 kWh. If charging from a standard wall outlet (15 amp {1} x 120 volt power supply = 1800 watts or 1.8kW ) then the total charge time should be (5.36/1.8=) approximately 3 hours. If charging from a single phase 220volt x 22.5 {1} amp power supply = 5400 watts or 5.4kW ) then the total charge time should be (5.36/5.4=) approximately 1 hours.

I was just wondering if I could upgarde my electric rc car by replacing the motor with a nitro motor so I could go faster through grass and mud.

Answer
I wouldn't think the two are compatible! Nitro also requires a fuel reservoir and is likely to get hotter. The two are not interchangable or you would be able to buy them as such.

Take a look at the specifications of the two types of models (and the petrol ones for that matter) at http://www.nitropro.co.uk

How to build an electric rc car from scratch or a good rc kit that is fast and waterproof?

Jay Pye

It needs to be under 250$ and needs to be from scratch. I need instructions and parts needed to create the electric rc and I also need it to be waterproof. If to buy all the materials is to expensive then what is a really good rc kit that is waterproof.

Answer
Seeing that there are no indication of scale size, for that price here are the options:
"1/16 Ford Mustang Boss 302 by Traxxas Ford's Iconic Muscle Car, With Titan 550 Power!" This has waterproof electronics. Suggested retail $200.00
"MODEL 7308: Ken Block Gymkhana Fiesta (Brushed), Fully assembled, Ready-To-Race®,
with TQ⢠AM radio system, Titan® 12T 550 motor, XL-2.5 electronic speed control,
7.2 volt NiMH battery & charger, and Race Replica painted body." 1/16 scale, suggested retail $225.00

1/10 scale HPI & Kyosho also have kits, not sure if they have waterproof electronics. Enjoy.

Why do car manufacturers make hybrid and electric cars ugly?

John P

It seems as though most hybrid and/or electric cars built by the big manufacturers are very ugly to look at. Why is this? One could almost get the impression that they don't want them to sell.

Answer
Your question doesn't make much sense to me.

Most hybrids look identical to the non-hybrid model version. The only hybrid that looks different is the Prius, because it has no non-hybrid version, and is designed that way in order to make it the most aerodynamic car on the road, which is part of the reason it's got the best fuel economy available.

The Civic hybrid looks like the Civic, the Explorer hybrid looks like the Explorer, the Camry hybrid looks like the Camry, etc. etc.

As for EVs, for one thing again they have to make them aerodynamic, and there's not a big market for new technology anyway, so they're trying to make the cars appealing by making them look 'futuristic' or 'cool'. What you think is 'ugly' another person will think looks cool.

That being said, if you want a standard (some might call boring) looking EV, there is the Miles Javlon and Phoenix SUT:

Ive been looking at purchasing an electric car recently and have found tesla motors to have some banging cars. However I couldn't find many others. So, dose anyone out there know of any company's that are currently selling electric cars that don't look super strange?

Answer
There is the global project called Better Place that is aiming to mass produce electric vehicles that cost the same as regular cars because you buy the car not the battery. They are working to supply the infrastructure to charge and swap batteries all powered by renewable and costs less than petrol. If you check out these sites itâll all be explained. It might not be happening near you yet but if you check out the sites youâll find out when you can access the future of private automobiles.

How Many Years Does the Battery in a Prius Last?

best mpg non electric cars image

Dave

I'm really considering buying a Prius because me and my family have been scraping pennies to put gas in the tank these days. My moms Ford Taurus just ran out of gas the other day and that was the last straw for me. We are dumping around 30 bucks a week of our hard earned cash into that car, and enough is enough. I don't know much about hybrids or electric cars so I want to know how many years can I get out of the battery in the Prius before it needs to be replaced? Especially since i'm looking at a few used 2010 Prius' with around 37-47k miles on them. Are they low maintenance? What kind of gas savings can I expect to get? I just need reliable, low cost transportation back and forth to school.
And I know there is an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty but will the battery last longer than that? I don't want to be replacing a battery every 8 years.

Answer
The mean time between failures for the 2004+ Prius traction battery isn't really known because not enough Prius have reached 300,000 to 400,000 miles yet. There are Prius owners with over 400,000 miles on the original battery. For Prius owners, the traction battery is a non-issue, similar to how an automatic transmission is a non-issue to old fashioned car drivers. The replacement price isn't that high and has been going down every years. It's under $2000 plus $500 installation for a new battery.

http://www.trademotion.com/parts/2012/TOYOTA/PRIUS/?siteid=213747&vehicleid=1503615&section=HYBRID%20COMPONENTS

Or you can get rebuilt batteries from companies like http://www.re-involt.com/ (Though right now they really only do 2001-2003 Prius batteries because there haven't been enough 2004+ batteries fail. Note that the 2001-2003 use the older style batteries which don't dissipate heat as evenly). Over half the 2001-2003 Prius with the older style battery are still on the original battery, so I wouldn't put all that much faith in statements like "only lasts ten years". Also GM doesn't use the same chemistry as Toyota. GM uses LiOn while Toyota uses NiMH. (Toyota does use LiOn but only in the plug-in-prius).

http://bc.ctvnews.ca/hybrids-prove-very-reliable-1.599754

You can also obtain a battery from a newer wreck for about $500. So, just like an automatic transmission, there are many choices should it fail.

Battery life also depends on environmental conditions.

The Prius also has a small 12V auxiliary battery which lasts about five years.

2004 Prius MPG from the logbook. (Complete years only):
2003-2004 -- 50.8 mpg 17,628 miles
2005 -- 52.6 mpg 14,688 miles
2006 -- 56.3 mpg 16,174 miles
2007 -- 57.3 mpg 18,384 miles
2008 -- 59.9 mpg 21,755 miles
2009 -- 61.4 mpg 16,177 miles

when do you expect the last generation of pure gas/diesel engine car be produced?

Eric C

2020? 2030?
the non-hybrid, non-electric, non-alternative feul, pure gas/diesel burning car be last made?

Answer
Well cars are being designed right now up to 2015, and there is a mandated all cars combined in a makes fleet must get 35 mpg by 2020.

I think they will be produced for a very long time.

Why? Well:

1. So far they are cheap to produce compared to other methods at the moment. In other countries there are alreayd microcars made by even chevy that get 40 mpg, but look like the smart car.

2. The hybrid technology can be applied to these microcars to get 70-100 mpg on gas. People would not complain about $5/gallon if you only put about 5 gallons in your tank at fill-up.

3. These pure microcars will be appealing to poor people, who can trade there old 20-30 mpg car and be able to afford a $10k brand new microcar that gets 45-50mpg without the hybrid technology.

4. Oil companies wont let people look away from them, as long as we use oil, they make money. Producing cars that do not use oil would kill them, so I am sure they will be spending money to make sure oil stays on ours minds.

5. Gas is already $8-$10 a gallon in Europe. They are driving the same cars we are.

When hydrogen technology, or fusion technology has a breakthrough then we will start to look away from gas powered cars. Until then, its really the only choice we have.

Hi! My car was vandalized again last night by my neighbors. Although I don't have evidence but I know it's them. Just the same, they first made deep scratches on my car, then, a few weeks later, maybe kicked the plastic cover of my plate number causing it to crack big time, then just a couple of weeks ago, punched a concrete nail on the wheel, and last night, made two very deep and long scratches on my doors. Its irritating but we can't do anything as we don't have any garage in the place we're renting at. And relocating is definitely out of the question and the budget. Security alarm has already been installed but it doesn't help much. When I was a kid, I touched a jeep my uncle was repairing and got zapped a little.

Question, is there such a way to do this on my car wherein the "zapper" gets activated when I set my alarm on? If you could point me to a DIY site to do this or any suggestions to do this will be highly appreciated.
Thank you! I think installing that camera might work long term. Could you point me to a website that has it or, what do you call that kind of camera? Thanks!

Answer
You could rig up a transformer to go from120v ac to 12v dc and run wires out to your car. If properly connected, anyone that touches metal on your car gets zapped. The video camera option is better though. If the person(s) are caught, you can take them to court and force them to pay for the repairs.

I am gifted in finding ways to make money......how do I write a book about my ideas?

Q. For some unknown reason I have a gift to see opportunities to make money, I have always been that way. I am considering how to write a book etc...and I need suggestions. I have 100's of ideas that work and have been very successful.

Here's one example: About 4 months ago a neighbor kid (14 years old) asked me to come up with a way for him to make money. I have done this for 3 other kids and he heard about me. I said okay, give me a few days.........

So, he came back and I told him that I noticed that down the road from our houses there was a license bureau where people buy their new plates, I noticed that half of the people coming out were women and a good many were elderly. I gave him an electric cordless drill and a bit and told him to stand at the door and ask to put on their plates and charge $5 for the service....and that includes putting on those confusing stickers in the right place.

The results: He is making $120-$150 a day VERY part-time and is always moving and never quits. On most Saturadys he makes $300.

The key is...I see a need and then fill it with a service. NOT a typical service that everyone and there brother is doing like, mowing grass, cleaning, washing cars etc...all BS that everyone is used to seeing. It's the little cracks I see....and I mean 100's of them

How do I go about writing a book?

Answer
Impressive!
I think you should write the book first!
then make up a good title for it, like...
100 ideas to make $.
or Part time work ideas
Teen Job Ideas
How to Make x-tra $.
DIY Money Making Advice
--------------------------------Stop giving away your ideas for free!!!
Make sure that when you write your book you make it unique and new so that they will actually publish it so people can buy it and you can make money off of it.
Don't make it boring and super long! You can probably write a series of books...like the 1st one can be for teens, 2nd for adults, 3rd for stay at home moms or dads. 4th for old or disabled people.

Good luck

How many volts does my speaker need to operate?

Zach

I got a couple speakers from an old kid's electric car and wanted to use them for things like my mp3 player. I'd like to operate them from batteries. One is a 1 watt, 16 omega speaker and the other is a 5 watt, 8 omega speaker. How many volts would I need for each one?

Answer
Speakers are a load. If you put a signal source into them, there is voltage and current flow. Multiply current times voltage, and you get power (in watts), which is the normal way speakers are specified.

Knowing the impedance, you can calculate back to find the required voltage. The formula is:

E= sqrt(P * Z)

Where:
E = Volts
P = Power (in watts)
Z = Impedance in Ohms

So, from your examples, the 5 watt speaker would take 6.3V. The 1 watt would take 4V.

Now that we've done that, throw them away and get yourself some proper powered speakers for just a few bucks. Those speakers will sound horrible for music.

Oh yeah, Omega is the symbol used in electronics for "ohms", a unit of resistance. It was also a recent album by Asia too.

Good luck.

Greetings from Austin, TX

Twice now when I have gone to the grocery store. Someone pulls in next to me while I am clearly unloading children. They look at me while walking away and with their remote blast thier car alarm/horn. This makes me jump and scares my daughter half to death and makes her scream in terror. I tried parking farther away but it happened again. Is it my place to say anything? Do I have rights or is their right to set their alarm anytime anyplace more important than mine or my babies hearing. Do you think they may have done it on purpose?

Answer
It cetainly sounds like it. It could be dangerous if it cause the kids to move and get into the line of traffic that traverses the carparks.

Perhaps carry a bag of dograp in a bag with you and when it happens wipe it all over their car door and window.
Or when they are about to leave the supermarket. just mention to one of the staff that you think the person is a shop lifter. Then move on quickly.
The there is the swap the trolly trick take their trolly and leave one in its place. Or throw extras in their trolley.

place a bag of sugar that you have put a hole in in their trolly so it trails around the mart, or a detergent that the cap has been well loosened.

Then there is the supaglue trick squiret super glue in their car door locks. dont stop the electric one but later when their battery goes down they try to use the key they wont get in!

I am sure you can think of lots of ways to get back at these morons good luck

Which powers the majority of electrical power plants, while at the same time pushing electric cars (with tax payer dollars) that need to be powered by those plants they are closing down.
With the new EPA standards, the coal industry says there will never be another coal power plant built, thus costing hundreds of thousands of jobs.
While at the same time China and India are opening a new coal plant every week.
Guess their jobs are more important to the 0bama administration than American jobs.

Why tata is failing to produce nano as an electric car?

Vishnu !

I think nano could become a boon for indian environment as well as economy if tata nano is an electric car.

Why most of the indian car makers hesitate to produce electric-eco friendly cars except REVA?

Answer
Because this car was made to reduce the production cost, if they do it it will be no longer the cheapest one on the market, and with this they are trying that every person in the world can buy one, that is way is called the people's car.

BUT, they actually will produce the e-Nano, the electrion version.

''The project has literally become India's claim-for-fame in the international-media due to Tata Motors' innovation in developing the car, as well as keeping it low in price. The car itself is expected to boost the Indian Economy, create entrepreneurial-opportunities across India[6][7], as well as expand the Indian car market by 65%[8]. The car was envisioned by renowned industrialist, Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group and Tata Motors, who has described it as an eco-friendly "people's car". Nano has been greatly appreciated by many sources and the media for its low-cost[9][10] and eco-friendly initiatives which include using compressed-air as fuel[11] and an electric-version (E-Nano)[12][13]. Tata Group is expected to mass-manufacture the Nano in very large quantities, particularly the electric-version, and, besides selling them in India, to also export them world-wide''

I'd love to hear what one (or more) thing (or things) you parents absolutely loved during your child's newborn weeks and the first year. I'm thinking about my baby list and registry. Thanks!
@Andrew: what exactly do you mean? Like, earplugs for dad? Yeah, um, that's not gonna work in our family. We're taking turns getting the baby.

Answer
My twins nursing pillow. I only use it for them one at a time, but if I was stuck on a desert island with them and could only bring one thing... that would be it.

Although without diapers it would get pretty stinky.

You can't take them home without a car seat of course.

For toys the doorway jumper KILLS SLAUGHTERS DESTROYS and ANNIHALATES all other toys. My guys are 5 months and been rocking out on them for 2 months.

ONLY the Graco is worth getting. I got the Evenflo - SUCKS. Worthless in comparison.

Graco doorway jumper cost $30, but worth $300 for fun.

I have all the stuff, all the toys, everything. For toys, Graco doorway jumper. I feel sorry for babies who don't have them.

I got the slings, I got the baby bjorns, I have the infant swings, bumbos, boppys, activity mat (okay, that one is IMPORTANT), I have 3 strollers, I have lots of bottles, pacifiers etc. gotta go with nursing pillow for feeding and for toys that doorway jumper.

I use prefolds and thirsties cloth diapers to. Much Much cheaper than disposables. For cloth get those, but if not using cloth that's fine to.

I change my guys on a waterproof mat on the floor. It is 1000 times better than a changing table. Because we do naked tummy time, play with them before and after changing... we do tons of floor time, and just change a diaper while we are down there.

I didn't have much help with the cleaning. Would have been great, but everyone who came to help me wanted to give them a bottle instead of helping me clean but I was breastfeeding so had to constantly tell them (my mom mostly) no. *sigh* Yes, help cleaning would have been nice.

Oh wait, an infant scale. I found that reduced my worries when breastfeeding. If you start to doubt your supply etc. you just weigh the baby and make sure they are gaining properly. Well worth the money. Pillow trumps it, but it is still a great thing to have for $30 from amazon.com. It also is a standing toddler scale for when they get bigger. Regular scales don't weight things less than 50 pounds very accurately, and infants not at all!

The best gift I got was my double electric breast pump... and the Kiddopotamus swaddlers! That is a tie actually. No, swaddlers win. Those velcro swaddlers will give you an extra couple hours of sleep or so a night. You want those very very much. Just 1 is fine. Costs about $12.

She's pregnant. What are some of the costs associated with pregnancy and child rearing?

Joe Schmoe

Neither of us have ever had kids. What will be the biggest challenge? How much does day care cost? Diapers? Etc.? Will I be able to finish college? I need to hear about other peoples' experiences.

Answer
My husband is an accountant and figured this out as much as he could. Please be aware that we live in a high cost area so we are paying more than say, the Midwest.

1. Medical care - Maternity care and the doctor's fee for delivery is usually a flat rate. This includes all your prenatal visits and a basic vaginal delivery fee for the delivering physician. This does not cover blood work, ultrasounds, urology testing, vaginal cultures, etc. These are billed at whatever rate you have with your insurer. The actual stay at the hospital will be a room, bed, nursing plus materials cost. I would call your local hospital and insurer to figure out approximately what this will come to.

2. Day care. Completely depends on who, how and where. Count on at least $800/month on the low side for home-run daycare with much more for a franchise facility. We are fortunate in our area because we can get qualified nannies who are recent immigrants who will cook, clean and watch the children for $1000/month.

3. Diapers. Cloth diapers are more work, but less expensive. Cloth diapers now are entirely different from what they used to be. http://www.fuzzibunz.com/ http://www.happyheinys.com/ If you go with disposables, buy them from Sam's Club or Costco or equivalent. I would buy wipes in bulk from them as well. If we buy them from a local store, they run about $18-20/pack. The packs get smaller as the sizes get bigger. They start at around 40 diapers and go down from there. Babies go through about a dozen diapers a day to start and then taper down some. You will spend a ton of money here.

4. Feeding. Breastfeeding saves well over $1000/year. You will need a breast pump which runs up to $350. (Buy a good one such as a Medela dual electric.) You will also need smaller items such as nursing bras, nursing pads, etc. You will want to have some bottles and maybe a bottle warmer on hand so that she can express her milk with the pump, and others can feed the baby when she is not with him. I can't speak to formula feeding. We aren't planning on going that route.

5. Setup costs. Buying used can save you a ton of money, but you will need to do research to ensure that the items meet safety standards. I would suggest www.craigslist.com. Do NOT buy a used crib mattress. Buy this new for sanitary and safety reasons. I would also suggest that you buy a new infant car seat and base. If the car is ever in an accident of any kind, the infant seat and base must be replaced, even if they look perfectly undamaged. I wouldn't risk someone's selling you a seat that may have been in an accident. We had to buy new since in our area, the cost weirdly ends up being the same between the 'normal stuff' that we would buy and the used 'ultra-luxury' stuff that people sell. We budgeted $2000 and came in just below that, but that included everything - car seat, base, stroller, crib, mattress, changing table, all possible accessories, breast pump with all other breastfeeding items, bottles and nipples, bottle warmer, toys, glider rocker with ottoman, clothes, 500 wipes, 2 -3 weeks worth of diapers, etc. For this amount, we completely and fully outfitted an entire nursery by shopping sales, generous baby showers, and spending a lot of time online looking for quality, but less expensive baby furniture. We did buy a changing table that is really a dresser with a change table on top so that we didn't have to buy him a dresser when he is a toddler or to use for both children if we have a second (dresser for the first and changing table top for the second).

Our pregnancy was a complete and total surprise. (We were told that I probably couldn't have children.) We immediately began to save and make financial arrangements. We also reduced our expenses by cutting down on si

This isn't in the near future, but the next time my husband deploys, I'm thinking about homeschooling the kids for a year and traveling the country, camping in or near national parks. I want them to see the redwoods and Yellowstone and all that. I haven't thought much about it; I'm just starting to get serious about it. Any thoughts? Also, who wants to let me camp in the driveway for a week?

Answer
I found it cheaper to camp in a trailer and have a truck at your disposal.
Pulling a small car behind a motor home involves upkeep on two engines and drive trains.
You guys can stay with me on your way to Yellowstone, I have my own water and electric hookups, WiFi with cable and a dump station a block away.

Can a pressure wash scratch a car?

Larisa M

I took my new 08 through a pressure wash and when I got out to see if it did a good job, there were light scratches all down the side. I only have had the car for two days and the scratches weren't there before. I sent it through because it rained.

Answer
Your car needs to be waxed and buffed well. Those car wash facilities never have decent waxes or buff jobs. A LOT of cars on the road have tiny scratches all over them if you strip the wax off so you can see them. It's just the nature of paint after going down the highway doing seventy (or more). Keep your car waxed on a regular basis and it'll not only hide these scratches but protect the finish from new ones.

***OH! I had to edit my answer, after thinking a little more***

Now I described what is "normal". However, I have seen some car washes that don't take good care of their equipment that have half-way clogged jets that cause pressures that are too high and will cause damage to your vehicle that is NOT normal. Without actually seeing your car, I really can't tell you if that's what's happened or not.

I'm sorry if I've confused you more. The best suggestion I can give I guess is to wax your car and go from their. If I may offer my opinion though, NEVER take your car anywhere to be washed unless its somewhere that only hand washes and waxes. Too often people wash their cars and never wax them. Then many miles down the road they wonder WHY ON EARTH is my finish faded (a popular question actually on this forum). Well, it's faded because without the protectio of the wax, it's then sun damaged. The UV rays from the sun are dangerous to more than just are skin. They reak havoc on an unwaxed car's finish. Also, without a wax protection, certain acids in our rain harm the finish.

Now, wax is a matter of personal opinion. I personally still trust the tried and true Turtle Wax. I use a low speed electric buffer on my wife's car (my old truck aint worth a wax job). I don't like high speed buffers because my kids help me and it's too easy to do more harm than good with the high speed.

Anyone know what the advantages/disadvantages are for lithium-ion batteries other than their costs? I heard they are probably the best option for electric cars, why is that? Why aren't they viable for off-grid storage? Just the costs?

Thanks!!
Also need information on flow batteries. Other than low-energy density and the inability to scale-up what are the disadvantages of flow batteries? Advantages?

Answer
"Just the costs" ???? Obviously, you have never learned about the time value of money. Try researching Internal Rate of Return and Net Present Value. The costs are a big deal. Lithium Ion may be the best battery technology that we have but there are many problems. They are tricky and dangerous to charge and discharge. Their capacity degrades almost immediately, they degrade the fastest when completely charged or completely discharged hence they are stored at 50% for shipping. Their volumetric energy may be the best for batteries but is still very low. They can only discharge at certain rates. Charging batteries is a little like warming up a frozen steak to room temperature, at first the changes occur quickly but as you approach your target, the rate slows down even though you may be putting the same amount of energy into it.

Ultimately, a battery is just a way of chemically storing energy. Well, so are gasoline and diesel, indeed these are stored solar energy. Unlike batteries, gasoline and diesel are energy dense, and do not self drain over time ( though gasoline will separate into varnishes ). We also know how to efficiently synthesize hydrocarbons from a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen gases in exothermic Fischer Tropsch reactions and have done so on national scales. WWII Germany fueled their planes and Embargoed South Africa fueled their trucks this way. The US currently dilutes it's high sulfur diesel with synthetic diesel to meet federal ultra low sulfur diesel requirements, yes this doubled the price of diesel overnight when the legislation passed in the 90's. Canada's tarsands are gasified into syngas and the synthesized into a synthetic crude. We can get the syngas from gasification of coal, natural gas, tarsands, biomass such as trash and dried sewage or even directly from CO2 and H2O if we use an energy source. We basically know how to "charge" CO2 and H2O back into gasoline and diesel and we can and have done so efficiently. It's just that storing energy ourselves doesn't compete with the energy that nature has stored for us. However, it does mean we can do better than lithium-ion batteries just by synthesizing our fuel and using existing vehicles and fuel delivery infrastructure. EV's with lithium-ion batteries are just green washing to sell new cars.

Synthetic fuels from the gasification of biomass can also produce charcoal which when used as biochar sequesters carbon from the environment. Our existing gasoline vehicles can remove CO2 from the atmosphere with carbon negative synthetic fuels. An electric car can not do that.

What was the first automobile built or introduced in Canada?

jason

I need to know who made the first automobile (car) in Canada, what it was called and when it was made.

And also... did the automobile radically change Canada's way of life, and if so, how has the automobile impacted Canada's way of life?

Answer
The Dixon Carriage Works of Toronto built electric cars starting in 1893.
They were followed by the Canadian Motor Syndicate which also made electric cars starting in 1895.
The Walkerville Motor Works started building model C Ford's in 1904.

Since then there has always been automobile production in Canada.

Most of the production has been from divisions of the American Big Three or for Japanese manufacturers (Honda and Toyota). Over the years, there has also been production for some European makes with Renault and Volvo both having Canadian assembly plants.

As an anecdote, you might like to know that the last generation of the iconic "American" muscle cars, the Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird, were actually built in Blainville, Québec.
