In my history class, I've learned about Caveman, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Roman, Renaissance, Industrial Revolutionary, WWI, WWII, etc. I was just wondering, about a hundreds or thousands of years from now. What do you think our kids will learn about? Petroleum? Internet? Etc?

Answer
Great question. Very thoughtful.
This era will be known as the "computer revolution."
It has changed everything in world society just as the industrial revolution did in the 1800's.
It will be known as the communication era - the time when world cultures began to merge through common communication via the internet as you have already surmised.
It will be known as a time when the world moved towards a common language - or perhaps focused down to three or four languages such as English, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, and Spanish. [The French will always speak French, but they will know a second language as well.]
Thousands of years from now there will be one common world language, but for this century the history will show that several languages emerged from the hundreds of world languages formerly spoken and written.

This will also be known as a time of growing global consciousness regarding the environment - else we will not be around a thousand years from now to write histories.
It will be known as the century of planned population control - or again, the future will be bleak.

A hundred years from now the War in Iraq will seem a small thing - a limited skirmish hardly worth a footnote. The loss of US troops over five years does not amount to a single large battle of the American Civil War. Although the loss of each individual serviceman or woman in Iraq over the recent five years matters a great deal to us now, in the USA we lose ten times more people every year to car accidents. When historians look back, Iraq will seem a small incident.

This will also be the century that people switched form gasoline powered vehicles to electric modes of transport or possibly hydrogen powered vehicles. The Middle East only started pumping out oil a little over 100 years ago. In the next 100 years, that resource will be gone.

Food will always be an essential, the USA will be crucial for world supply.

One other thought - chemotherapy as we use it now for malignant diseases - will be considered medieval and as barbaric as bloodletting looking back 100 years from now.
Older people will still die with cancer, but people must die of something to make room for younger generations. Cancer treatments - for the many varieties of cancer - will be more specifically targeted at the cancerous cells. Cancers will be detected earlier and, hopefully, many types of cancer will be prevented. Lung cancers would decline by 80 to 90% in the next 20 years if everyone would stop smoking right now.

100 years ago, cancer was #8 on the top ten killer list compared to #2 now. Relatively few people worldwide smoked a pack of cigarettes a day in 1908.
100 years from now, cancer will still be #2 following old age related cardiovascular disease, but the relative numbers of cancer deaths will be much lower - - IF we work on the global environment and health habits such as smoking.

In the year 2108 we will look back and say the 1990's were the peak years for lung cancer deaths related to the peculiar old habit of smoking a drug known then as tobacco. The kids will be revolted by the the idea that people actually sucked addicting, carcinogenic smoke from burning vegetation into their own lungs. There will be nothing "cool" about smoking.

cleaning tips for a daycare?

Jennifer R

We run a daycare, and have all age kids from 6 weeks - 8 years old. The kids are always making messes and throughing their toys on the floor, and putting them in thier mouth.

Does any one have tips on keeping things clean and sanitized for the kids?

Such as toys, floors, walkers, and fabrics?

Answer
Hard toys can either be thrown into the dishwasher or take a spray bottle and put Listerine mouth wash in it and spray it on the toy, hit it with a brush (electric tooth brushes work great) & wipe off with a clean towel.

make a "home" for every toy & put a picture of that toy or type of toy on its home (like a clear plastic bin on a shelf with a picture of a car or lego on it, dolly shelf with a picture of a doll on it, dress up box with a dress picture, etc.)

A few times a day do the "thirty second tidy time" or "I Spy" where the kids clean up with you or as part of a game.

A good steam cleaner is a MUST.

Is it possible to have a manual transmission in an electric car?

I know that electric cars don't need a transmission at all, but that would take a lot of the fun out of driving it. Would it be possible to have a manual transmission in an electric car?

Answer
It is possible to as you said, make an electric car without a transmission. Perhaps the best configuration for this is a 4 wheel drive electric vehicle with hub motors. But with even one motor a transmission is not required.

However most conversions from an internal combustion engine to an electric motor will keep the transmission and rear axle. Although this adds a lot of unnecessary weight is makes the conversion process a lot easier. Manual transmissions may even keep their clutch but it may not be necessary or desirable to use it.

I usually drive an automatic transmission but for the last week I was in rural Georgia driving a Mazda Miata (1) on country roads. It was a fun car to drive. I enjoyed the manual transmission and steering for this small car. But back in a big northeastern city, traffic, snow, and just needing to get where I am going easily makes me grateful for the simplicity of an automatic.

Electric cars will not initially be for everyone. They may offer the most advantages for commuters who have a garage or other place to charge them. But in an interesting development, electric vehicles are being offered to niche markets at first: You have the NEV (2), the neighborhood electric vehicle for that quiet little vehicle that can give you a short hop with little fuss and no fuel. Then there is the much publicized Tesla Roadster (3) that has a two speed transmission. And last is another unique "commuter" vehicle, the Tango, (4) this is among a new class of vehicle that has been called "Narrow track vehicles" (5: interesting viewing) This last video suggests vehicles that might be considered fun to drive with or without a transmission.

What kind of engineers design electric cars?

Joseph

I'm looking for my major in engineering for sure, I'm just not sure where I want to go into it. I'm really interested in electric cars but I'm just not sure which category of engineering it falls under.

Answer
car design will mostly fall under mechanical. it took more then a certain type of engineer to design the electric car. you can help build it if your a mechanical, electrical or probably some other type of engineer related in the field.

The Credit

But they charged a million pounds per car, would you be anger at that type of exploitation?

Answer
One of the nice things about our DOWN economy is that car makers are going to need to re-invent themselves.
Aptera makes a car that gets 300 mpg OR if that is too costly for you you can get their electric version and use NO gas. You charge it each night at home OR you can order an "opposing magnet motor" from me that runs a 35 amp alternator and produces nothing but power, and will re-charge a bank of 24 batteries while you work or while you sleep.

You can remove the gasoline engine from your car and install a motor that runs on electric power. You install 24 batteries in your trunk or wherever you can put them and then you add this little "generator box" and you go to work, running on the batteries. While you are at work the "box" charges your batteries back to normal. When you go home your "box" charges the batteries while you sleep. Want to take the family to the beach on Saturday? The batteries charge while the kids play on the beach.

It's a GREAT idea and it is available NOW! The conversion runs about $8,000 from what I'm told. Not sure where you could find the conversion kits. I'm going to ask a question on here to find out.
The magnet motor charging box is in the patent office right now but should be available soon. Anyone interested can email me and I'll let you know when it is done. There IS a working model of it right now. And it should cost $200 to MAKE one yourself or about $500 pre-made and ready to go.

The Aptera is available to Calif residents right now and costs $25,000 with batteries and a gasoline motor.

The all -electric model is about $30K. Check it at the link below. IT looks like a little Cessna plane without the wings.

IT'S COMING! AS soon as GM and Ford decide they want to become profitable again they will start making super high fuel efficient models and they will take over the world market for cars. OR they will go broke.

BTW ... in India they already have cars that run on Compressed AIR! My professor friend over in India has been telling me all about it and wonders why the Americans are not building them yet.

GM almost died in 1986 when the Japanese beat them to the punch with higher mileage vehicles. They will catch on soon if they want to survive.

We'll see.

How do you think we can prevent the scarcity of fossil fuels?

For peace

The price of petrol and diesel are rising day by day and our hydrocarbon reserves are diminishing...Although researches are still going on..to find a substitute, what else can we do to prevent "lack of fuel" condition??

Any ideas?Any sugestions??
Johnnie, as you said, the earth recycles....but,it takes a huge amount of time for that...Also...the organic matter(such as plants, animals etc..) are also getting used up..

Answer
First thing we could do would be to talk about it, spread awareness, let people know that there is an issue which needs to be tackled before it turns into a crisis. You posing this question depicts that we (at least you) have got the first step right.

Let me first state that in my opinion, there is no out-of-the-box easy solution for this. The only answers are search for newer and non-traditional sources of energy like geothermal energy, tidal energy, solar energy, liquid hydrogen, garbage energy etc and exercise controlled and minimized use of non-replenishable sources of energy.

Here are a few suggestions-

1- Save oil!
Seen as a caption in many of the children's painting competitions- "Save Oil!" should be the motto of everyone around the planet. Personal automobiles should be used less. Public transport facilities should be ameliorated.

2- Go CFL!
Compact fluorescent light bulbs should replace the energy consuming electric bulbs. Likewise, age-old machines should make way for the modern energy efficient appliances.

3- Check vehicles!
What was the last time you neglected your bike/ car's poor average and mileage? Over-consumption should be kept under check by keeping your ride in good condition.

4- Search!
Search for new oil reserves might just buy us more time to think over and solve the impending crisis.

5- Fire and oil make a deadly combo...
Keep the oil refineries and reserves well protected from fire. Not only these accidental fires cause a loss of money and lives, they result in huge loss of the natural resources.

6- Encourage the solar cooker.
Don't mock the nuclear plant. It is a shy but bright kid. Kidding! Ok bad joke... I mean to say- we should slowly work towards establishing non-traditional sources of energy in our lifestyles. Nuclear energy still has a wide scope of application. Same with hydroelectric, solar, wind and other alternatives.

7- Turn off the lights, switch off the fans....
You're probably yawning reading this. This had been repeated so many times but still... you have to save energy in day-to-day affairs.

8- Spread awareness.
Yes, we need more campaigns. The chapters in our social-studies books have already told and retold us all these things but, there is a certain crowd that needs to be told about this in a more effective manner.

9- Smokeless and fuel efficient chulhas.
Here, in India, villages still rely on fuel wood and coal for their basic energy needs. The smokeless chulhas (stoves) go a long way in conserving wood from blind consumption.

10- Use Biogas.
We need more biogas plants. They, in my view, are the best and simplest alternatives in terms of energy cycling. Go biogas! So what if it doesn't smell like roses?

11- Population!
All these measures are of no or little use if the consumption still keeps growing. How about we put a check on population growth? We have been listening to this since the beginning! Do something! Take lessons from China!

12- Plant trees....
Again a well-known and over-discussed solution. We need more mass campaigns. More fuel wood trees and shrubs should be grown.

Electric Powered Ride-On Cars for toddlers- which to buy? Where to buy?

lysistrata

I want to buy one for my son for christmas. However, I looked at amazon and there are so many different ones. Some are cheap, like $40 while others are $500. I can't figure out what makes one different from another. Which do you recommend? And where are good places to buy them? Thanks so much!

Answer
My hubby wants to buy my daughter one of those, and they are very very pricey.

They have them at Toys R' Us. We were told the the Escalade is very good, that it lasted their kids 3 summers. They also said that the Jeep SUCKS, it only lasted 1 summer.

Hope that helps. :)

What's a good Razor Scooter to buy to ride in the City?

Curious Jo

Hi I work in San Francisco's financial district, so I'm looking to buy a scooter I can use to commute around the city. After while walking can get really tiring. Hence the researching. So what are some good brands/models do you recommend? I'm looking for a study scooter that can fold, and can ride smooth on pavement and uneven urban surfaces. My price range $200 and below. $100 and below even better. Also other then razor, what are other good brands to look into as well. Thank you for your time.

Answer
Razor Electric Scooter a great ride in the city

Dec 20, 2010 (Updated Dec 20, 2010)
Rated a Somewhat Helpful Review by the Epinions community

Pros:Great Price no fuel used.

Cons:You can't carry weight over 120 pounds

The Bottom Line: I had a lot of fun with my scooter. I will use it again in a safe park.

I made a purchase last year when it was summer and I was living in the middle of a city. I went to Target and found an Electric Powered Razor E100 Electric Scooter for a little over a hundred. It was a fast purchase but I didn't have a car and this seemed perfect for quick runs to the store. It goes pretty fast around 10mph. The battery lasts for 5 miles or 40 minutes of continuous use and it is easy to get going and to stop. It has a variable speed chain drive and comes with the battery and all the tools needed.

It is recommended for kids 8 and over. It takes 4 hours to charge which I feel is reasonable. It also easily folds up and comes in different colors and styles. You can twist grip the acceleration as to control you're speed easier. I am 25 but I fit the height and weight requirements so as long as I didn't get over 120 pounds I was okay riding it. So it wasn't as efficient for grocery purchases but took me to the ATM or to the bank. To start it up you have to run it over 3 miles an hour and it starts. It definitely is a workout. Don't let anyone tell you that balancing a scooter is a free ride. You use you're balance constantly and to save battery life you can turn it off and on to use. It is good for kids who are supervised. It is dangerous and illegal in some metropolitan areas and also requires frequent air.

It is a lot of fun though if you weigh under 120 and are an adult and a lot of fun for a kid. I would recommend head gear and knee pads however because at 10mph you can get injured if you fall off. Always wear over the ankle shoes because the sides of the Razor are sharp and you can bang you're ankle against it. It is best ridden in parks for recreation. It didn't work quite as well for my purpose of shopping unless I didn't want to carry house keys and a bottle of water. It also helps the environment as it uses no gas.

It is a lot of fun but be careful.

What are the Pro's and Con's to having an electric tank?

Teegan

This kid in my class seems to think that an electric tanks is better than ones that use gas.

Answer
I assume you mean battle tanks such as the Panzer, the Sherman, the T-38.

Is he nuts? Obviously he has not studied real history. Mobile mechanized warfare mobility is absolutely essential, and at any time. An electric car has a hard enough time running for more than one hour weighing in at maybe 2600 pounds before the batteries are added in. How far does he think a vehicle weighing 60 tons will go with enough room for maybe three times that of a car in batteries?

What happens when the batteries die? If you are in that tank, you are called "easy targets." Especially when a long drawn out battle ensues like that at Kursk in WW2. A battery powered tank would be a severe liability, even if well dug in.

Rommel did not lose to Montgomery in North Africa because his extension cords were not long enough, or the sun did not shine long enough- he lost because he became vulnerable by running out further than his support battalions could keep up. Plus Motgomery's men figured out how to make the 2 pounders in their Pershings actually have effect on the German tanks- point blank range targetting. (spitting distance)

So the idea of an electric tank is fanciful- real world technology on the other hand can outrun and outlast a battery powered tank.

The original government RFP for what became the M1 Abrahms originally stipulated the engine must capable of running on any fuel- gasoline, diesel, heating oil, or mix thereof. Chrysler's entry used a turbine. GM used a more conventionaly modified diesel. Battereis are only for starting and excess electric loads- not motion.

I watched the documentary "Who killed the electric car" the other day. I'm not sure what really happened, nor do I care about much except the fact that I really really want an electric car. Do they even sell a single one anymore?
The reason I want one isn't only because of the environment or the outstanding gas prices, it's because I feel that it's the 21st century and we have this new technology, yet we spend all of our efforts on an already ancient energy source when we could already go electric! I hate the crap people spew out that "gas gives people jobs" and nonsense like that. It's called adapting to change and increasing efficiency. Fossil fuels and petroleum aren't efficient anymore

Answer
-------------
They are available today - in fact, I already drive one - there are lots of choices for electric cars, and more on the way. Electric vehicles can have performance as good or better than gas-powered cars, and they cost a lot less to operate (only a penny or two per mile.) Why don't we all know about them? Why do so many people 'know' wrong facts about them? Good question!
*
First, the inexpensive ones:
*
Electric vehicle conversions (a gas car converted to run on electricity) are generally pretty inexpensive, and can be had for as little as $5000. You won't get the latest technology, so you'll have a limited driving range. But a conversion is a great way to 'get your feet wet' in electric vehicles. This is the sort of car I drive. It does freeway speeds, accelerates and handles fine, and looks like a normal car. I charge mine up at work so I have enough juice to run errands on the way home. Here's a link:
*
http://www.squidoo.com/cheap-electric-car
*
How about new tech electric cars? If you don't need to get on the freeway, you might like the ZAP. The ZAP is only $10,000 brand new. It's very cute, but tops out at about 45mph. It's not much bigger than a motorbike. Link:
*
http://www.zapworld.com/ZAPWorld.aspx?id=188
*
How about the ultimate EV? Take a look at a modern electric car:
*
http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html
*
The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:

-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
Now, as to performance - you can't beat the Tesla electric sports car - it does 130mph, and 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds. Driving range is 250 miles:

Are there any available electric cars that can go highway speed?

the mental

I watched "Who Killed the Electric Car?" and heard a presentation about electric cars. They seem like really great cars but the only ones that are available are low speed cars (max speed of 35 mph), right?

Answer
Sure. In fact, you can build one yourself for under $10,000. I plan to turn this into a summer project for me. You may want to check out diyelectriccar.com. There is lots of great info there to get you started. Another place I'd like to recommend is evalbum.com. This is a showcase for anyone who's built/owns an electric car. If you don't want to build an electric car yourself, you ought to check out evtradingpost.com, where people sell fully-completed conversion vehicles, production electric vehicles, and parts to make your own electric vehicle (sort of like classified ads). Whichever route you choose to go, good luck!

EDIT: You may also wish to look into the Solectria Force. It is a professionally converted car that is capable of going highway speeds, with a reasonable range to boot. These can be seen on the evalbum and the evtradingpost, amongst other places.

How do I convince my husband that we can afford to move?

Becalek

We are currently living in a government assisted apartment with 3 bedrooms 1 bath central heat and air, and new windows. The rooms are very small and with 2 daughters (14 and 7) we are very cramped. I recently found a brick house for rent in an area where I have been really wanting to move to. It is very close to both my mother and our church. The school district is the same but just a different school. My oldest daughter will be starting high school next year and the high school is the same. My youngest daughter will have to change schools, but she really wants to anyway. The girls and I looked at the house and fell in LOVE with it and desperately want to move there. It is a 2 bedroom 1 bath country house with a big kitchen, bigger bedrooms big living room and a den (that we can use as master bedroom) Utility room a big yard, barn for kids to play in a carport and an additional 2 car barn, pets are allowed has a range celling fans in every room and a trampoline that stays with house. Only hang-ups are electric wall heaters and old but sturdy windows. The big hang-up is that my husband does not like to pay RENT, He would rather make a house payment so we could own a house instead of paying to live in someone else's house. But if they decide to sell we will have 1st option to buy. Well he says we can't afford it anyway the rent is $400 a month (which I believe is really great.) like I said right now we live in a government assisted apartment,no pets, no place for girls to play, their bikes got stolen, have to pay to do laundry($60 a month) have electric and gas bills and $144 rent verses $400 a month rent just electric bill and our own washer and dryer. He is disabled and receives $710 a month we get food stamps and I am working for his mother at her cake shop.My feeling is that we can't afford not to move.

Answer
Your husband according to your previous question from 6 months ago is very overweight and does nothing all day but eat. You mean to say this man who gets free food, free disability, free rent has an issue about throwing away money on rent? No way your family is purchasing a home anytime soon. Not with a man who doesn't work because of a disability caused by his own lack of control. I don't mean to sound cynical but, I don't see how he has any place making a fuss about paying rent when you guys barely pay anything right now, thanks to your fellow tax payers.

If buying a home is a priority for him, he needs to do something about his health and get your entire family off all forms of public assistance. Since that is not happening anytime soon, I would say rent the home. They don't give mortgages to people who don't have a down payment saved up. And he cannot have a big savings account if he wants to keep his disability check.

What are some activities you do when babysitting?

Zoey

I babysit alot the activities can be for any age of children. I'm just looking for a really long list of activities that are kind of time consuming and a lot of fun, for both me and the kids thanks!

Answer
-Make play dough! http://www.busybeekidscrafts.com/Salt-Dough-Recipe.html
You can even take a small food storage container (of yours) to have the kids decorate with stickers, etc. that will hold their play dough it.

-Decorate a pillow case/T-shirt/etc..
Bring your accessory that you are going to color on. Take some permanent markers for them to use, but make sure they don't write on anything else- include themselves.

-Go outside!
Play with chalk.
Blow bubbles. (you can even make them)
Take a walk/bike ride
Visit a park
Have a picnic
Bring some water guns
Do a scavenger hunt: Have them find a pink flower, a blue car, etc.

-Have a dance party!
Put some songs like: The Macerana, the twist, chicken dance, hokey pokey, electric slide, etc. on a CD or a playlist on your ipod. Turn off the lights, expect for some dimmed ones or a lamp. Try to get a diso ball. (glow sticks if the kids are above the age of 7) Freeze dance for the little ones!

-Play games!
Hide and seek
Twister
Go fish
Slap Jack
Candy Land
Bowling (use soup cans as pins, and a ball)

-For girls: Do a pedicure!
Take a large bowl, if you have one and put a towel under it. Fill it up with warm water and bubbles/soap. Let her sit on the coach with her feet in the bowl. Massage her feet, then paint her toes.

-Frost cookies!
Make the cookies at your house and take them with to avoid using their stove! Bring along some frosting and sprinkles. Have them decorate their own. Rice krispies also work but are quite messy!

-ColoIring
You can take big poster boards and stamps, stickers, markers... Or you can print off coloring sheets, and have them make their own coloring book. Drawing contests for older kids are always fun!

-Build a "tent!"
Very fun in my opinion. Put chairs in a circle, and lay a big blanket on top! Crawl in and enjoy.
I love going "camping" with this idea. Set up the tent, roast marshmallows in the microwave, do a scavenger hunt, etc.

- Balloon games..
This is only good for kids older than about 5... The little ones can choke on broken balloon pieces. Play "keep it in the air" or do the game with the balloon tied to your ankle. Make sure to clean up!

-Limbo...

-Movie "theater"
Bring 4-5 movies for them to pick from, make tickets, have a concession stand.
A fun idea with this topic is if you can bring some large cardboard boxes to make fake cars out of and have a pretend drive in movie.

Just be creative!!

Korey

My Mum wants to know how the price of charging a battery for an electric or a hybrid stacks up to the price of fuel for a gas-powered car.

Answer
This depends on the hybrid or electric car and the prices of electricity in your area. Most of the hybrid cars on the market today aren't actually charged by plugging into the wall, they recharge while you are driving and braking only plug in hybrids recharge from an outlet. For charging the battery it is just a calculation of the energy used, and I will use the tesla roadster as an example. Their battery takes 3.5 hours to charge at 240V and 70Amps. Power (Watts)= I*V so P=70*240 or 16800W. It takes 3.5 hours at this power to charge the battery so you use 58800 Whrs or 58.8 kWhrs. Electric companies charge by the kWhr, so if you pay 15cents per Kwhr that would cost $8.82 to charge the car. Since this is completely electric and can go an estimated 245 miles per charge that is about 3.6 cents per mile to drive. This is of course an estimation, the price will vary depending on what your electric company charges per kWhr. But just for comparison a gas powered or non-plug in hybrid car (plug in hybrids are gas and electric) that gets 40 mpg with a 15 gallon tank and with gas at $3.30 would cost about 8.25 cents per mile to drive. Electric and hybrid cars are obviously cheaper to operate but they are usually more expensive to purchase and you also have to factor in the fact that batteries only last around 5 years and are very expensive to replace. At the moment the total cost of buying and operating a hybrid car is around equal to or more than the cost of a non-hybrid car. They are better for the environment, and you pay less for gas, but if you plan on keeping them for more than 5 years than you will probably have to pay to replace the batteries. Warranties for hybrids and electric cars expire when the expected productive life of the batteries ends, so if you plan on keeping the car longer than that you will probably have to pay for new batteries.

Is there a website that I can go to, that has relatively unbiased opinions on the different hybrid cars?

Megs

Also, if you have had experience with them what do you think about them versus a regular car that get about 32 mpg?

Thanks in advance!

Answer
I bought a hybrid Toyota Camry last year when my old Camry finally bit the dust. I did a lot of research on the choices, including Consumer Reports, which was a GREAT resource.

I chose a Toyota over a Honda hybrid for several reasons. I am not a car expert, so if I phrase things like a non-expert, please forgive me, people! First, the Toyota is on its 3rd generation with hybrids and that strikes me as a company that has experience with these engines. Second, I learned that with the Honda, the gas engine is the one that starts you up and is essentially the engine that you are using until you need extra power, which is then supplied by the electric engine. With the Toyota, it is the opposite, in that the electric engine is the first source of power and the gas kicks in when needed. This strikes me as a better way to go.

Also, the Toyota had better numbers with gas mileage. From my personal experience, having driven my Camry hybrid for almost a year now, I can tell you that I get slightly more than double the mileage with the hybrid. Where with my old car, I would fill the tank once a week, now I go about 16-18 days on a tank

The hybrid does start a little slow, so it isn't for jack rabbits, but then, that is the point, right? The quick accelerating cars are murder on gas mileage. Once you are up and running in a few seconds, it goes just as just as you want.

Let me know what you get, new cars are so exciting!! Mine is red, with a sun roof, and she is so much fun to drive!! And I get tons of compliments from people who are interested in driving them.

Blessings,
Lady Morgana

im not sure if you can get a drifter for 85.00...... you can get the hpi electric micro drift kit. its 74.00 at towerhobbies.com

you'll need to get the radio and the esc( electronic speed controll)

if you get the cheapest controller and esc should cost more than 100- 110 dollars.

these cars are made to drift but to drift easier i recommened the

you can always try rc-tradingpost.com never bought from them but they have some cheap rc drifters

what are the poles on rc cars for?

darkslayer

I recently have been looking at electric rc drift cars and some of the cars have these poles coming out of the front and back (on the hood and trunk). And i was wondering if that is the same thing as an antenna if not what are they for? There are usually two on the front and two on the back.

Answer
Hi, it sounds like you are referring to the body posts. The polycarbonate shell, or body, is clipped onto a car using clips that attach to these four posts that poke up through holes in the body. With these clips, it is easy to remove the body to replace the battery or upgrade parts. It is also very easy to just get a new body for a car to give it a fresh look if you like.

when will electric cars have common power supply for quick exchange?

If there where a common battery pack for electric cars, then the spent batteries could be excanged at a station like cars cuurently stop at gas stations. With the e/car range problem solved, there's NO reason to pursue other technologies and the gas powered pesonal vehicle can die a quick death! Can somebody pass this on to Elon Musk?

Answer
Things like that have been talked about. More likely is that we will have batteries that can be charged quickly and charging stations.

Phoenix Motorcars has a battery made by Altairnano, which can be charged in 10 minutes with a special 440 volt charger. It's onboard 110 volt plug in charger takes 6 hours.

Another idea that has been discussed is for power companies to buy up used electric car batteries for storing energy. Apparently the batteries will have plenty of life left when they are no longer strong enough to run the car. This could conceivably reduce the up front cost of the car's battery as this would be pro rated, or discounted when the car is sold.

Electric cars are already sufficient for use as local delivery vehicles and such. Phoenix sees farmers and ranchers using their utility pickup as job trucks. Also, industrial, construction and mining sites could use them the same way.

I think plug in hybrid electrics, PHEV, are the best bet for the time being.

Plug in Partners has a lot of info.
http://www.pluginpartners.org/

"Plug-In Hybrids
Gas: Optional
Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are outfitted with a battery pack sufficient to power the vehicle from 20 to 60 miles on battery charge alone. Considering that half the cars on Americaâs roads are driven 25 miles a day or less, a plug-in with a 25-mile range battery could eliminate gasoline use in the daily commute of millions of Americans. The cost of an equivalent electric gallon of gas is estimated to be less than $1.00."

"Gets about twice the fuel economy of a conventional vehicle and 30-50% better fuel economy than a standard hybrid
Plugs into a standard (120-volt) home electrical outlet to receive charge
Depending on design and battery size can be driven 20 to 60 miles without the use of gasoline "

"PHEVs outfitted with a battery pack providing a 40-mile electric range could power, using the all-electric mode, more than 60% of the total annual miles traveled by the average American driver."

And our electric grid, while not as clean as we would like it, is still much cleaner than using gasoline or diesel.

"Additionally, plug-in hybrids, like conventional hybrids, donât idle when sitting still. Estimates are that in urban driving, idling translates to about 10%-15% of total vehicle carbon emissions."

"A motorist driving 9,000 annual gasoline-free miles and 3,000 using gasoline would get
100 mpg (based on vehicles that get 25 mpg)."

Will electric cars ever be affordable and practical?

Q. Electric cars have been around for over 100 years, yet many problems remain to be solved.
Cost: $40,000+ is out of range for most people and certainly too high for a small car. It would take years to pay for itself in terms of gasoline saved.
Batteries: charging can take several hours. Expense of replacing can be as high as half of the car cost.
It just seems that it will be a long time before technology can give the people an electric car that makes sense.

Answer
we have a long way to go to make electric cars as practical and affordable as gasoline cars. The biggest hurdle now is battery technology. Once batteries can be made which provide the same amount of energy as gasoline, meaning that a battery can take you as far as a tank of gas one a single charge, and are affordable, we will see electric cars on the roads.

Right now, batteries with a decent amount of Amp-hours are extremely expensive and bulky. Plus, there isn't much infrastructure in place to support electric cars. There is a gas station on every corner but can you think of a place to plug in your car even if it used a regular 120Vac outlet? Could you plug it in at work or in a parking garage without running 1000 feet of extension cords?

We may see them being affordable one day but until they become practical as well (solve these issues I listed above), it will be a long time before they replace gasoline cars.

Can a family of 3 survive on just over 1300 a month?

Kodey

I, as of recently, have lost 95% of my hours at my part-time secondary job. My primary workplace however, is currently paying me $10.50/hr. I am now curious if myself, along with my fiance and 2-year-old daughter could survive off of the estimated 1300/month.

Currently, expenses that I can track (or estimate) are as follows:

Rent 540 (2bd 1b apt)
Electric 100-120 summers 50-80 winter
Gas 0 (included in rent)
Water 0 (also included in rent)
Car insurance 115
Groceries 300-350+
Fuel 120+
Toiletries 40+
I would also like to add that for the time being, I am currently receiving government assistance in the grocery department. I suppose that should be added to my monthly income. I would like to release myself from the assistance as soon as I am able to go without.

Long story short, 1550 a month is a better estimate for my monthly income at this point in time.
If my partner was to pick up a part-time job, I would then need a form of daycare for my 2 year old. Greatly increasing my monthly expenses. We are also working with just the one vehicle, bring the issue of limited transport into play. How could we counter this to improve our current state of living?
This is NET not GROSS if that makes any difference at all.

Answer
$1300 a month to play with (go with the pessimist view always so that you have "left-overs" to play with).

10% goes to long-term (retirement) savings: $130 a month. While you're in the crapper, make this 3% ($39) towards retirement and 7% ($91) towards your emergency fund.

15% goes to debt repayment/emergency fund: $195 a month that should be going to a regular savings account until you have at least 6 times your monthly income ($7800); in your case, you should just be aiming to save as much as you can beyond that amount.

35% goes to housing (rent, mortgage, bills, utilities, insurances, etc.): All-inclusive, you can afford under $455 a month, which means that you would be over-spending by $165; get more income to cover this gap.

15% goes to transportation (gas, insurance, repairs, bus): $195 a month, which you are over-spending by $40; more income to cover the gap.

25% goes to life (food, entertainment, clothing, gifts, travel, medical, wants, phone, internet, cable, other): $325 a month, or $81.25 a week. I suppose it depends on where you live, but I'm a young adult living on my own and that's what I can support myself on only.

So you need at least $205 extra every month to cover your gaps, and preferably a bit more than that so you can add some to life/savings.

What about the side-jobs? Tutor, baby-sit, pet-sit, house-sit, walk dogs, clean pools, weed gardens, mow lawns, shovel snow, rake leaves, clean houses, run errands for people, etc.

Your fiancé is staying home anyway to take care of your child, why doesn't she do a home-daycare? If she took care of one extra child five days a week and charged $25 per day, she'd be making $500 extra every month doing what she already does with your kid; not to mention she would have a play-date all the time.

what kind of things should you know before moving out on your own?

Q. This still wont be for a little bit, but wanna make sure I have everything prepared. Any advice or things you think I should know?

Answer
Good question. Here is your Wake Up Call.
Moving out on your own means you must have a job that brings in enough money to pay your rent every month plus all the other bills that come in monthly-like gas, electric, phone, trash, water, cable,Internet, etc. You'll need enough left over every month to buy food, gas clothing.

Also when you first move into an apartment you will have to pay 3 months rent - your first month, your last month and a security deposit (equal to 1 months rent)for cleaning and repairs once you move out. You'll be required to sign a lease which is legally binding. Usually a lease lasts for a year. By signing the rental agreement you are committed to paying the rent and utilities for a full year. If you decide to move out before the year is up you will still LEGALLY owe the rent for the entire year because you signed a contract.

Most people who leave home for their first apartment have NO IDEA how expensive it is every month. Up until now your parents have paid your way. Now you're on your own.

Most kids work for a few years to set money aside for their first apartment.
An average nationwide rent for a one room (studio) apartment is around $800 per month. Since you'll have to pay 3 months IN advance you'll need $2400 to start. Figure your monthly utilities will be half the cost of your monthly rent - so $400. That means you'll need $1200 EVERY MONTH and you still have not paid for food or gas for your car for that month. Then don't forget stuff like car insurance, taxes, etc which will add even more to your monthly bill.

One of the goals I've set for myself is to travel to Australia before I turn 30. Knocking on 28 right now, and so it's time to get everything set in motion.

I'm going to aim for Feb/Mar 2009. I plan to go along the Boomerang Coast... Sydney, Melbourne... may start at Brisbane. I've a few friends there.

Any must-sees along the way? I've never been out-of-country before. Do I need any vaccinations? How long does it take to get the visa cleared, and how much does the visa cost?

Answer
One must see and not too far out of your way is the Great Ocean Road running west of Melbourne. You could probably get a coach trip but it might be good to hire a car in Melbourne and drop it off at say Mt. Gambier, or you could head north from there through the wine growing country of South Australia.

The other thing is that you should spend 2 or 3 days in Canberra. The War Memorial & Museum is only beaten by the Imperial War Museum in London, they say. Also take a look at the Parliament House, built partially underground (!) in 1987 - 88 and open to all comers. Security checks apply but you can take all the photos you want - not while the houses are sitting of course.

An International Drivers Licence could ease the hiring of a car quite a bit. I looked into car hire recently and the larger companies actually did offer the best rates I could find.

We use Mastercard, Visa, American Express, Diners Club cards and a few others and there are plenty of automatic teller machines around the place and most of them are cross - compatible.

There are no endemic diseases here so vaccinations are not really a problem, we might be more worried about things you can bring with you! (Just kidding) A flu shot might be worthwhile.

Visas, well I've never had to get one but I'd allow a good 8 weeks, best to have it stashed rather than get worried whether it was going to arrive in time. A travel agent can advise you, but Australia has several consulates in the USA for instance and you can find them on the net.

If you are coming from the USA, don't bring electrical appliances, Australia uses 240Volts which will burn out US stuff before you can blink. Small dual voltage stuff like electric shavers are OK, but you will need an adapter plug. Your portable battery operated AM/FM radio will work fine. Some chargers for laptops and cell phones will work on 100 to 250 Volts without needing to set a selector switch, look at the charger. Hotels/motels offering internet connection are getting a lot more common even in rural areas but they tend to be at the higher end of the market.

Your cell phone might work if you get an Australian SIM card - check with your supplier. Cell phone coverage is good in the capital cities and larger towns, not so good in the small towns and along highways. Telstra has the best coverage.

Look at this site for electrical and phone information -

http://www.kropla.com/

http://www.accesscomms.com.au/Reference/powerplug.htm

Many Australian hotels/motels have hair dryers hard wired into bathroom walls and some have a 110 volt socket too. You can usually borrow a clothes iron and board from reception for free or a small fee and there is usually a guest laundry with auto washer and a drier.

How do you measure the mpg on an electric motor?

Recently there have been announcements by GM's Chevy dept that It's volt receives some 230 mpg and the Nissan also announced that it's Leaf gets 367 mpg. My question is how does one calculate the mpg rating on an electric car... I thought I'd search online to find a conversion from mile per charge to mpg, but haven't found anything...anyone got an answer?

Answer
GM and then Nissan used the EPA's draft method for calculating an mpg rating from an electric car.

It's a difficult situation, because people are used to seeing a car's efficiency in mpg, but obviously that's not applicable to a car when it's not using gasoline. So what the EPA is doing is figuring out a conversion to translate the amount of energy used by electric cars into an equivalent mpg rating. But they haven't finalized the conversion yet. All they have at this point is a draft, and GM took the draft method, calculated a value for the Volt, and made a big deal about it. Which is kind of lame. Then Nissan one-upped them by using the same calculation for their LEAF.

Why can't they just put a self-charging system on a electric car?

Q. They have alternators on cars now...Why can't they figure out a way to install a charging system on a wheel or something like that to keep the batteries charged on a electric car to get more mileage out of them between charges?

Answer
There are a few tricks, such as regenerative braking, solar panels, or wind alternators that can squeeze out an extra ounce of energy that would have been wasted otherwise. Car companies have been using them in their vehicles to build value, and give bragging rights, but most EV builders do not use them, as they are rarely cost effective.

Electric cars will gain greater range in the future as these tricks (but especially battery technology) improve. Despite what news reporters say, there is no miracle technology around the corner.

what kind of tips would be neat .. what kind of video ..

Answer
Observing plans. You can get more accomplished if you have some idea what you want to see in advance.

Observing logs. I've used a clip board, a palm pilot, and lately, an mp3 player that has voice recording ability. Handy when it's cold. Don't record all night, just when you have something to say. I type it in later.

Use a green laser pointer as a finder for your scope. You point your whole scope to the spot on the sky where the object should be (where it is on some chart). Look in the eyepiece.

I've got a dob. When looking low on the horizon, i have to kneel on the ground. I use the floor mat from my car to keep my knees intact. When looking higher, i use a 2 step kitchen stool. I sit on the low step when it's low, and the higher step when i'm towards the zenith. But there's a handle for when you're showing little kids. It's something they can grab other than your eyepiece.

Binoculars. 8x binoculars can be hand held. For me, 10x is pretty shaky. I can get 10x50 binoculars at a sporting goods store for $25. But a good tripod is over $100. And you still need a $25 adapter. But at the DIY section of the sky & telescope web site, they show plans for a binocular mount that you can put together for $15 and a couple hours.

All you need to watch meteors is a warm blanket and a pillow. How hard is that? Spend your free time learning the constellations that happen to be in front of you.

How to dress warm. I find that when my batteries are working in my electric socks, i don't need gloves even when it's below freezing. Dress for success.

Make observing a social event. If nothing else, the object you didn't have to find because someone else did that is the easiest.

I'd write much more, but they took my crayons away.

Electric Shock on Car?

Grampa Han

Hi! My car was vandalized again last night by my neighbors. Although I don't have evidence but I know it's them. Just the same, they first made deep scratches on my car, then, a few weeks later, maybe kicked the plastic cover of my plate number causing it to crack big time, then just a couple of weeks ago, punched a concrete nail on the wheel, and last night, made two very deep and long scratches on my doors. Its irritating but we can't do anything as we don't have any garage in the place we're renting at. And relocating is definitely out of the question and the budget. Security alarm has already been installed but it doesn't help much. When I was a kid, I touched a jeep my uncle was repairing and got zapped a little.

Question, is there such a way to do this on my car wherein the "zapper" gets activated when I set my alarm on? If you could point me to a DIY site to do this or any suggestions to do this will be highly appreciated.
Thank you! I think installing that camera might work long term. Could you point me to a website that has it or, what do you call that kind of camera? Thanks!

Answer
You could rig up a transformer to go from120v ac to 12v dc and run wires out to your car. If properly connected, anyone that touches metal on your car gets zapped. The video camera option is better though. If the person(s) are caught, you can take them to court and force them to pay for the repairs.

How Many Years Does the Battery in a Prius Last?

I'm really considering buying a Prius because me and my family have been scraping pennies to put gas in the tank these days. My moms Ford Taurus just ran out of gas the other day and that was the last straw for me. We are dumping around 30 bucks a week of our hard earned cash into that car, and enough is enough. I don't know much about hybrids or electric cars so I want to know how many years can I get out of the battery in the Prius before it needs to be replaced? Especially since i'm looking at a few used 2010 Prius' with around 37-47k miles on them. Are they low maintenance? What kind of gas savings can I expect to get? I just need reliable, low cost transportation back and forth to school.
And I know there is an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty but will the battery last longer than that? I don't want to be replacing a battery every 8 years.

Answer
The mean time between failures for the 2004+ Prius traction battery isn't really known because not enough Prius have reached 300,000 to 400,000 miles yet. There are Prius owners with over 400,000 miles on the original battery. For Prius owners, the traction battery is a non-issue, similar to how an automatic transmission is a non-issue to old fashioned car drivers. The replacement price isn't that high and has been going down every years. It's under $2000 plus $500 installation for a new battery.

http://www.trademotion.com/parts/2012/TOYOTA/PRIUS/?siteid=213747&vehicleid=1503615&section=HYBRID%20COMPONENTS

Or you can get rebuilt batteries from companies like http://www.re-involt.com/ (Though right now they really only do 2001-2003 Prius batteries because there haven't been enough 2004+ batteries fail. Note that the 2001-2003 use the older style batteries which don't dissipate heat as evenly). Over half the 2001-2003 Prius with the older style battery are still on the original battery, so I wouldn't put all that much faith in statements like "only lasts ten years". Also GM doesn't use the same chemistry as Toyota. GM uses LiOn while Toyota uses NiMH. (Toyota does use LiOn but only in the plug-in-prius).

http://bc.ctvnews.ca/hybrids-prove-very-reliable-1.599754

You can also obtain a battery from a newer wreck for about $500. So, just like an automatic transmission, there are many choices should it fail.

Battery life also depends on environmental conditions.

The Prius also has a small 12V auxiliary battery which lasts about five years.

2004 Prius MPG from the logbook. (Complete years only):
2003-2004 -- 50.8 mpg 17,628 miles
2005 -- 52.6 mpg 14,688 miles
2006 -- 56.3 mpg 16,174 miles
2007 -- 57.3 mpg 18,384 miles
2008 -- 59.9 mpg 21,755 miles
2009 -- 61.4 mpg 16,177 miles
2010 -- 65.2 mpg 12,134 miles
2011 -- 66.9 mpg 11,272 miles

Are fully electric cars really the solution to high gas prices?

Carlos

Supposedly, half of the fuel spent during an electric vehicle's life span is spent constructing the vehicle. As gas prices rise, so will the cost of an electric vehicle.

Answer
You raise a good point but these things are never simple. Cars get old and will be replaced in any event. No one is suggesting that you take your 2011 Lexis scrap it and buy a 2012 electric car. The value that is in the lexis is sold to someone else and they avoid the fuel cost involved in a new car.

If you are in the habit of buying a new car every 1 to 3 years then there is energy that goes into either an electric or an ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle. When we take a look at the specific vehicles we find that an ICE and its associated transmission can have up to 700 moving parts. This is in addition to the thousands of non moving parts used to support motion. The EV can have as few as 5 moving parts. They are far simpler vehicles.

While I have not seen stats on this, one has to assume that more parts equals more transportation for parts to be assembled. More transportation equals more fuel (and of course the resulting pollution.)

While electric vehicles assembly will become more expensive over time so also will ICE vehicles and we might expect more so. As renewable energy becomes a greater part of our electric production long term costs will be reduced. Petrol fuel costs will never be reduced but only rise.

Once the cars are assembled and operating the ICE vehicle is only about 15% efficient at the wheels. That means 85% of the fuel is wasted to inefficiency rather than motion. The EV on the other hand can be more than 90% efficient from battery to wheels. So here is a tremendous fuel saving that starts from the first day of operation.

Finally there is the issue of subsidies. Fossil fuel costs are presently subsidized about 12 times more than renewable energy costs. Because of subsidies the connection between cost and efficiency is broken. The electric vehicle has the potential of using renewable energy for fuel that is not an option for the petrol fueled vehicle. If subsidies were to disappear or be adversely affected by an embargo or a war the EV could remain cheaper to operate, in addition to being more efficient, while the petrol vehicle could be priced to extinction.

Which is the speed of electrons in a current and which is the pressure: volts and amps?

electric cars for kids 24 volt image

Smudgeward

I know that double thick volumes of wire are required for half the voltage twice the amperage so I figure amps are the pressure of the current but want confirmation from an electrician.
Out of intrest, as all resources become scarcer is there any possibility that America could change over to 220 to 240v standard domestic current to improve efficiency or will that always be a non-starter?

Answer
Approaching the speed of light, the differential "Pressure" is Volts the "Amount" (number) of Electrons is Amps.

CURRENT: I = V/R or I = P/V
VOLTAGE: V= P/I or V = IR
POWER: I2R or VI
RESISTANCE: R = V/I

Most homes already have 220 volts wired up, to run 220v appliances the difference is US is 60 Hz Europe is 50 Hz

I believe it is the "Safety" aspect (or maybe cost/benefit ratio) of running 220 volts that is the issue here in the US.

Sorry I. B. Zoxx got it backwards: The water pressure is the volts the water volume is the amps. You can have a Million amps available but if the voltage is below 28 volts and you touch it you will feel nothing (due to the resistance of your skin - some people have high resistance and can take a little more volts while some have less and can not take as much - I believe the safest voltage is 24 volts or less for humans).
Auto manufacturers would love to run your car on 120 volts (they could cut 50 pounds of copper wire from most cars) but alot of folks would probably die from touching bare wires in their cars LOL
Anyone with an electric car and the voltage is over 28 volts, DON'T TOUCH IT!.
Sorry I'm an EE not an Electrician the main difference I've noticed is that Electricians use their fingers to tell how many volts are on a wire while I use a Multimeter.........Just Kidding LOL

Thank you dmb06851 well put 8-)

In this part of the country there are not many of them. Have you owned one and how did you like it. How often did you plug in your car, everyday or after the 50 miles were used?
In this part of the country there are not many of them. Have you owned one and how did you like it. How often did you plug in your car, everyday or after the 50 miles were used? If you have owned one, would you purchase a second one or one to replace the one you already have. I am trying not to have this be a political discussion. I know the rumors. I just want someone who has owned one to tell me their experiences

Answer
You have to start by answering the question, "What do I need to get out of the vehicle?"

If your primary use is just to put around town like take the kids to school, run down to the grocery store, commute the 5 miles to work you can get way with a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) or some times called Low speed Electric Vehicle (LEV). The cars are limited by law to 25 MPH (35 MPH in some states) but they recharge from any outlet you can plug your cell phone in.

If you need to take to the highway your options become severely limited. Currently the only highway speed EV available to the public is the Tesla Roadster at $120,000. Everybody else "is working on it and will be ready by 2010".

You don't need a 300 MPC (miles per charge) electric car. When you get home after a hard days work, you plug in the car, eat dinner go to bed. In the morning you get up, get dressed, unplug the car and leave every day with a full load of "fuel". Two minor additions to the usual routine and you've made the world a little better. A gas car doesn't self fill at night an since you don't want to visit the gas station on a daily basis 300 miles is a light range requirement.

The length of the charge time at night is irrelevant. I'm asleep so what difference does it make if it takes 1 hour or 6. Think how many hours a day is your car actually being used out of 24? The rest of the time it is just sitting, waiting for you to use it.

As for plugging it in everyday, don't you plug in your cell phone every day to charge it? An EV is the same deal, put the car in its parking place, hop out plug the cord in, go in and eat dinner. The rest is automatic and baring some kind of minor catastrophe your car is ready to go in the morning. You can also plug in wherever you stop, called opportunity charging, if your vehicle has a 110 volt charger. Since 80% of people put less than 40 miles on their car on a daily basis a 50 mile range isn't an inconvenience.

What can I do to go all green on Earth Day?

MissBeckyF

I am concerned about the earth and I want to go all green. I'm even wanting to see the movie Earth. Any tips, ideas? :) All are very appreciated.
is everyone against Earth Day ?!

Answer
1. Recycle, recycle, recycle
This can be as easy as collecting your recyclables and throwing them in the bin for weekly pickup. Explain to your children why it is important to recycle waste and how old papers, bottles and cans are re-made into new products.

Kids can help out by collecting bottles and cans around the house and then dropping them off with you at a Clynk recycling center at Hannaford. You can even let the kids keep the money from the program (usually a couple dollars a week or more, depending on how many beers your husband drinks) as an allowance. This also teaches them that doing something good for the environment can actually pay you back.

2. Lights out
This takes very little time, but can benefit both your electric bill and the environment. Ask your kids to shut off the lights before they leave a room and explain how this saves energy. Remember to unplug appliances when you are not using them, as âphantomâ electricity really adds up. If you haven't, switch to CFL light bulbs for even more savings.

3. Water â less is best
The whole family can get on board by turning off the water when brushing teeth and washing hands. Run the dishwasher only when full, and wash pots and pans by hand. My kids love washing pots and pans with a scrubbing brush full of soap bubbles. Run the water only when rinsing.

You can also explain that shorter showers mean that your family is saving water and electricity. At bath time, fill up the tub halfway to save gallons of water.

4. Reuse resources
Encourage kids to use both sides of the paper with crayon or marker before taking another piece. Use recycled materials whenever possible for arts and crafts projects. Collect materials from nature to use in creative ways. Use recycled yogurt cups and egg cartons for paint containers. Buy recycled paper products (drawing paper, computer paper, toilet paper, paper towels).

5. Shop secondhand
Trade outgrown clothes and toys for gently used ones at a secondhand store or on ebay. You can explain to your kids how this keeps costs down and reduces waste (remember, everything can also be a lesson).

6. Buy local and organic
When you buy locally it not only helps Maine businesses, but also reduces the transportation involved with importing products, which saves money and energy. Choose organic foods if possible, which are produced without pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Not only are organic products better for you, they are better for the environment.

7. Look for green products
Now we don't have to make a special trip to Whole Foods just to buy green household products. More and more popular brands are offering non-toxic
alternatives and both Hannaford and Shaw's carry their own line of natural and organic products.

8. If it breaks, don't fix it
No one can afford to go out and buy all-new, more energy-efficient versions of appliances, home remodeling materials and cars. But if it is time to make a major purchase, consider buying a greener alternative. Washers, dryers and dishwashers now have Energy Star models that use less energy. Hybrid cars are coming out in family-friendly sizes and are more readily available.

9. Heat with alternative fuels
If a major conversion is not a possibility (and it isn't for most), consider switching to biofuel oil to heat your home. Biofuel, a mix of vegetable-based oil and regular fuel oil, is produced here in the U.S. and is better for the environment.
If you are thinking about adding a supplemental heat source, pellet stoves and gas fireplaces burn more efficiently than oil-burning boilers and furnaces.

10. Plant a tree or garden
What better way to teach your kids the value of nature than to plant a tree or start your own garden? Get the whole family involved with digging, planting seeds and watering.

Dr. Evil

I've always wanted to buy a hybrid car. But now I want to compare let's say the Toyota Prius to a full electric car. If I can find a good full electric car that's at a good price, I'd get it. Does anyone know any cars or good websites that have sedan plug-in electric cars that cost pretty close to a gasoline car. I know that there is the Tesla Roadster and Chevy Volt, which are pretty cool. They're pretty expensive though. Thanks.

Answer
theres a new company from China that is starting to sell cars in the US this year. They are signing up dealers. The first car will only go 30 mph and he charge doesnt hold for long. They have one due out next year that will go 60 mph and last alot longer/ They will be about $30k. Then there is the Gem which i think is sold by Chevy

Are pure electric cars and plug-in hybrid electric cars easier and cost less to maintain? Do they still have?

Edward

radiators, spark plugs, motor oil? When the battery in a plug-in hybrid electric car runs low, does the car automatically start the onboard generator without the driver doing anything? How long does it take to recharge a electric car to travel 15 miles roundtrip to work?

Answer
Electric cars are operated by electric motors. This is a fundamentally different engine than the heat producing internal combustion engine. They are essentially permanently lubricated and therefore don't require oil changes for the engine. Electric motors do not burn a fuel so do not require spark plugs. They are rotary engines so operate virtually vibration free and silent so do not need tune ups or mufflers. Commercial vehicles like the Nissan Leaf have regenerative braking so they are very light on the traditional brake system causing far less maintenance. One owner of a RAV4ev said that he did not have to perform any vehicle maintenance for over 5 years.

"Pure electric cars" as the term is used are battery electric cars that do not have a traditional engine or a generator. The power is transmitted to the vehicle and stored in batteries. Some electric vehicles may have a radiator that is used for liquid cooling of the battery system. The volt does but the Leaf has an air cooled battery system.

Some vehicles like the Volt are closer to series hybrids than a pure electric car. They have an electric motor that is the primary mover for the vehicle. They also have the traditional engine with all its associated maintenance. They never require charging to operate but the batteries will only last about 40 miles. After this the engine starts a generator automatically to continue the operation of the electric motor.

Parallel hybrids like the Prius are never plugged in and charge the vehicle when less energy is needed to power the vehicle. All energy comes from the fuel. (although the 2012 version can be plugged in for some fuel savings.)

Electric cars economy and charge times will vary. The Nissan Leaf EPA rating is 34 KW-hr to travel 100 miles or .34 kWh /mile. A 15 mile journey would then require (15 x .34=) 5.1 kW hr. You need to add about 5% for charger inefficiency so the total charge required would be approximately 5.36 kWh. If charging from a standard wall outlet (15 amp {1} x 120 volt power supply = 1800 watts or 1.8kW ) then the total charge time should be (5.36/1.8=) approximately 3 hours. If charging from a single phase 220volt x 22.5 {1} amp power supply = 5400 watts or 5.4kW ) then the total charge time should be (5.36/5.4=) approximately 1 hours.
