This one here --> http://www.oo.com.au/Little_Tikes_Cozy_Coupe_Car_P17796.cfm?AFID=15&cm_mmc=MyShopping-_-cpc-_-feed-_-null

Is it worth the $150?? Or waste of money? Looking at getting one for my daughter soon lol

Answer
They are DANGEROUS.
If the kid gets onto a slope they lose all control over them, and can careen into walls, fences or even out into traffic and get seriously hurt.

I'd never thought twice about them until my husband pointed this flaw out. As a result my son will NEVER be getting one. Plus, even in Australia where the recommended retail IS that high (toyworld often has them for less than the $150, so don't get it from OO- save yourself the shipping!) you can get better ride on toys for less.

The advantage to the cozy coupe is that younger children can handle it, my son was able to handle the display ones in our second most local toyworld at 12 months. Personally I would recommend getting something that doesn't free wheel as easily just for the safety factor.

I purchased this car for my son's first birthday
http://www.soldsmart.com.au/Kids-Electric-Ride-On-Racing-Car-and-Remote
They take a while to ship (about two months, but they'd been out of warehouse stock for this one when I ordered it and had to wait for more from overseas).
I got it last time it was on special- it cost me $115 total including shipping to Ipswich, and it's a reliable little car. YOU can control it via the remote, and it's slow enough that when the child does master controlling it you can catch them before they get into a dangerous situation.

fun things to do in wal-mart (50-100)?

blondie93

51. While walking around the store, sing in your loudest voice
possible "sex and candy"

52. Try putting different pairs of women's panties on your
head and walk around the store casually.

53. Leave small sacrifices or gifts in the hands of the
mannequins.

54. Nonchalantly "test" the brushes and combs in Cosmetics.

55. When two or three people are walking ahead of you, run
between them, yelling, "Red Rover!"

56. Look right into the security camera, and use it as a mirror
while you pick your nose.

57. Set up another battlefield with G.I. Joes vs. G.I. Janes.
(Red lipstick might give an interesting effect!!!)

58. While handling guns in the hunting department, suddenly
ask the clerk if he knows where the anti-depressants are. Act
as spastic as possible.

59. While no one's watching quickly switch the men's and
women's signs on the doors of the rest room.

60. Fill your cart with boxes of condoms, and watch
everyone's jaws drop when you attempt to buy them.

61. In the auto department, practice your "Madonna" look with
various funnels.

62. Hide in the clothing racks and when people browse
through, say things like "the fat man walks alone," and scare
them into believing that the clothes are talking to them

63. While walking around alone, pretend someone is with you
and get into a very serious conversation. Ex: The person is
breaking up with you and you begin crying "How could you
do this to me? I thought you loved me! I knew there was
another girl, but I thought I had won. You kissed ME
darling." Then act as though you are being beaten and fall onto
the ground screaming and having convulsions.

64. Go to an empty checkout stand and try to check people
out.

65. Get a stuffed animal and go to the front of the store and
begin stroking it lovingly, saying "Good girl, good bessie."

66. Go over to the shoe department and try on every pair of
shoes, not putiing one pair back. Take the paper from the
boxes and throw it in various aisles.

67. Ask other customers if they have any Grey Poupon.

68. In the makeup department, spray yourself with every
perfume there is, then walk up to a boy who is with another
girl and start flirting with him in that annoying, ditsy way.
"hi!!!! (giggle) What's your sign?(giggle)." When the boy
shows no interest, start hitting on the girl the exact same way.
"hi!!!! (giggle) What's your sign?(giggle)."

69. Get boxes of Condoms and randomly put them in peoples
carts when they don't realize it!

70. Walk around the perfume department with a bottle of
super strong perfume and spray people as they walk by. Lean
in and sniff them then jump back and wave your hand in front
of your nose and saying "Oh god, your over powering the
perfume!!"

71. Hit on the elderly.

72. Hit on 5 year olds.

73. In the food aisle, pretend like there's a little bug, slowly
move your head to the right, then swing your head to the left
as if your trying to follow it. Slowly lower your head to the
ground, then start spinning around in circles stomping like
crazy. Then finally yell out "Yes!!! I got it!!! Wow, that was
the biggest Cockrouch I've ever seen, i think it was pregnant!!!
Hey look, there's another one!!!" Then Repeat.

74. Repeat 73 with a can of bug spray.

75. Crawl around on the ground and pretend that your a cat.
Meow when people walk by, rub up against their legs, etc.

76. Ride around on those electric cars and pretend that your a
prissy English Man. Say things like "Cheerio, good man." to
people who walk by. And don't forget to have perfect posture.

77. Start grunting like Beavis and Butthead while chasing your
friends up and down aisles trying to run over them with those
electric cars. Make sure to tell your friends to act like they
don't know you.

78. Spend all your money riding on those little rides for
toddlers. Fit the character; if your on a hoarse, then pretend
that your a cowboy, etc.. And If a little kid comes over
wanting to use it, start barking at them until
they run away crying.

79. Have silly string fights with a friend. Hide behind
customers and "accidentally" hit the people instead of your
friend.

80. Excesively use anything thing that says "Try Me".

81. Start pocketing any and all free samples.

82. Draw mustaches on all the pictures and mannequins.

82. Walk up to the customer service and when they say
"Hello, how may I help you?" say "Yes, I'll have a Quarter
Pounder with cheese, one strawberry shake, a large order of
french fries and a diet coke." And when they start to talk, say
"Oh, to go". Then when they say that they can't give it to you
say "Oh, This is because I'm gay isn't it? I'd expect this from
Caldors, but not Walmart.

Looking for a good rc car that is quick, off road and fairly priced that can replace my aging tornado epx pro from redcat racing. I want a decent one but don't want to abuse my wallet too much.

Answer
Team Associated buggy now brings high-performance in the brushless RC10B4.1 RTR. Team Durango DEX410R 1/10 Electric 4wd Off Road Buggy Kit. Team Associated T4.1 Brushless RTR 1/10 Truck w/2.4GHz Radio. These might work for you.

Where can I get a quality build your own rc car kit?

brandon

I'm into mechanics and tinkering and I want to get one to build my self and use I'm new at this and I'm looking for a kit that will supply a fun build but also a good sized quality rc car.. Any suggestions?

Answer
A great place to start is:
http://www.amainhobbies.com/index.php/cPath/1_44/n/RC-Cars-Trucks-Kits

Here you can take a look at a good portion of what is available. Not knowing your budget, preference for off road vs on road, nitro or electric makes it tough to recommend something.

Once you click on one of the categories, make sure you select kit, and not Ready To Run (RTR's are prebuilt). 1/8 is bigger than 1/10 of course, and 1/8 nitro buggy is my own personal favorite racing class.

If you make a decision on what type of RC you want, head over to your local hobby shop if you have one. Then see what they carry. It's always a big plus to have something you can readily get parts for. Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions.

Does the electricity use to operate electric cars require fossil fuels?

uneak16280

I have given myself a headache trying to find the answer to Does the electricity use to operate electric cars require fossil fuel. Any help would be appreciated. Please list a website also.

Answer
Yes, in almost all cases. Fossil fuels are used (often quite intensely) to produce solar panels, hydroelectric dams, and wind farms. The current materials and construction methods rely on fossil fuels and are generally harmful to the environment. For example: silicon in solar panels is produced in a fossil fuel intensive way (see source below), hydroelectric dams destroy ecosystems (see source below), and large-scale wind farms (if terrestrial) require large areas of cleared landscape, huge industrially-produced parts, and maintenance that often relies on fossil-fuel based products and services. Also worth mentioning are the massive electrical grids that transfer electricity all over the world. These require incredible amounts of material and maintenance, most of which is produced with fossil fuels (transport vehicles and staff, metal used for wiring, etc.). Furthermore, the production of batteries in 99.9% of cases is dependent on fossil fuels. The many chemistries (zinc, manganese, nickel, lithium, copper, mercury, etc.) used in batteries are produced using vast amounts of fossil fuels, either for mining (i.e., nickel) or processing (i.e., zinc).

Unfortunately, electric cars rely almost entirely on fossil fuels. They simply extend the life (e.g., 10 years with a battery) of fossil fuels by using technologies like batteries. The efficiency is slightly up, but the dependence on a non-renewable, depleting source is still there.

there are several new electric cars cumming out the next few years. I love the idea of electric cars and i would love to own one. unfortunately i could never afford a Tesla roadster or something like that. what are some affordable electric cars or cheep electric cars for sale that i could possibly buy in the next couple of years.
also is there a good source for finding information on electric cars online

Answer
As an electric car owner i know it can be difficult to make a decision on buying an electric car. since electric cars haven't been around for that long most of us don't know much about electric cars and this makes it difficult to make a informed decision regarding a electric car purchase.

you are right in that there is several new electric cars soon to be released and some that are already available. hear is a few affordable electric cars that you should look into.

The GEM e2 $7,495 MSRP
this inst what most people are looking for when they want to buy a "electric car" but it is very affordable is this is the sort of car you are looking for.

The Ford Focus Electric $ ??,???
ford has not announced a official price for this car but many believe it will be in the lower 30K range.
if you look at some of the pictures of the inside of this car you will find it is absolutely beautiful. and loaded with technology

Mitsubishi I-MiEV price < $30,000
Mitsubishi has also yet to announce the price of the upcoming I-MiEV but they claim it will cost less than 30,000 the rumor is that this car will have excellent acceleration even when compared to gasoline engines

Honda Fit EV $29,990
Take your typical Honda Fit and remove the engine gas pipe and and gas tank. replace those with electric engine and lithium ion batteries and you've got the Honda Fit EV. there are other differences as well but the EV will be very similar to the Honda Fit gasoline

Nissan Leaf $25,280
this is the car that in my opinion most other electric car companies will model there cars after. it has more features than most of the electric cars on the market and cost much less. i believe ford might be able with the Nissan leaf as far as features go but most believe the ford focus electric will not be nearly as affordable as the Nissan leaf.

Chevrolet Volt $32,780
i personally own this car and i love it. it was one of the first electric cars released and unlike most of the electric cars around it has been Time Tested and has proven to be a great car. i also love that you can use gasoline if you need to!

to help answer you question about finding i good source for electric car information i got all my information from personal experience and from this article
http://thecarwatt.com/2011/06/24/how-much-are-electric-cars-prices-of-electric-cars/electric-car-costs/
it this site has a lot more information than i could possibly describe for you here

Not hybrid, fully electric

Answer
I'm guessing you mean hybrid cars. To my knowledge, there are 8 hybrid cars and 5 hybrid SUVs available today in the US, and only one of them, the Toyota Prius, is not availiable as a regular gas-only model.

Honda Accord
Honda Civic
Lexus GS 450
Lexus LS 600
Saturn Aura
Nissan Altima
Toyota Camry
Toyota Prius (the only one here that isn't normal looking)

will me and my kids be able to survive on our own?

aunisty

my husband came home from work afew days ago and i had this strong urge to go out to his truck. so i went there and was looking around and i found a pair of womens underware! i panicked, came in the house, started screaming and told him he had to leave right away.

he said he would leave.

he was mostly the bread winner and made approx. $3200 a month. i work my butt off as a CNA and only make $1950 a month after taxes. we have 5 kids ranging from ages 2-13, a pregnant dog expecting 10 puppies in june, and 2 other dogs. and we have a cat and a pet rat.

keep in mind, my cousin babysits the 2 younger kids for only $50 a week while i work and my house is paid off so i only have these bills-

house taxes- 100 a month
house insurance- 50 a month
cable, internet, phone package- 115 a month
electric- 65 a month
car insurance- 85 a month
heat- (summer months) 50 a month
and water and sewer $50 a month
and daycare 200 a month
and my fancy table im paying 45 a month on

i usually take the kids bowling or roller skating too for $30-40 a week so $120 a month
and i spend about $110 on the animals a month

and i pack home lunches for school.

will we be able to survive without my husband, and how soon can i get child support and what do i have to do?

Answer
You have done really well to have put your family budget together so quickly. This is definitely the first thought to consider when parting ways with an ex. You work way too hard to put up with any crap from Mr. Wiggley.

On the other hand, your ex is still the kids father and should be treated as such. Get to a lawyer right away and get an emergency hearing for child support. Your husband will fight back, so it is important to prepare carefully and cooly.

There is a complete guide for custody strategies from top experts that work with parents just like you every day and have been for 25 years.

What are fun things to do while babysitting?

I'm going to be babysitting soon, a 2 and a half year old and a five year old. I was just wondering what some fun things are to do while babysitting, I want to be like the best babysitter ever for them.

Answer
-Make play dough! http://www.busybeekidscrafts.com/Salt-Doâ¦
You can even take a small food storage container (of yours) to have the kids decorate with stickers, etc. that will hold their play dough it.

--Go outside!
Play with chalk.
Blow bubbles. (you can even make them)
Take a walk/bike ride
Visit a park
Have a picnic
Bring some water guns
Do a scavenger hunt: Have them find a pink flower, a blue car, etc.

-Decorate a pillow case
Buy some cheap pillow cases, and write their name on it in sharpie. Get some fabric markers for them to decorate the pillow with.

-DANCE!
Put some songs like: The Macerana, the twist, chicken dance, hokey pokey, electric slide, etc. on a CD or a playlist on your ipod. Turn off the lights, expect for some dimmed ones or a lamp, even try to get a disco ball! Let them dance freely, or play freeze dance.

-Play games!
Hide and seek
Twister
Go fish
Slap Jack
Candy Land

-Bowling
Set up a bowling alley with some water bottles or plastic cups as pins, and a soup can as the ball.

-Frost cookies!
Make some cookies before the kids get there, or you go to their house. Let them put frosting and sprinkles on the cookies.

-ColoIring
You can take big poster boards and stamps, stickers, markers... Or you can print off coloring sheets, and have them make their own coloring book

--Limbo...

-Movie "theater"
Bring 4-5 movies for them to pick from, make tickets, have a concession stand.
A fun idea with this topic is if you can bring some large cardboard boxes to make fake cars out of and have a pretend drive in movie.

Just be creative!!
For more ideas please email me at jaide.babysitting@yahoo.com I really love talking to other babysitters!

What exactly is supposed to happen in 2012?

Spacetrave

December 21 2012? How can you prove this hoax is just a big scam?
So many good answers!
So many good answers!

Answer
The people making up the wild and crazy claims about "doomsday" in 2012 are grifters and liars. Some want your money (BUY MY BOOK!) and some just want notoriety. The claims themselves are nonsense. It is INSULTING to anyone with even a High School education in science that these people are allowed to espouse and print such ridiculous lies.

If I claimed that tomorrow the Sun would turn pink and bunnies would take over the world, you might suggest that I seek psychological help, yet when someone like Patrick Geryl says that "streams of positive ions will push the South Pole over making the Earth flip" like a pancake... or a crepe (he IS Belgian), you hardly EVER hear anyone say "Is he forgetting to take his meds?" It is just silly!

So often in Y!A we hear people say "scientists say..." or "look at the evidence that civilizations collapse every 3600 years" when NOT ONE of these people have ever even taken a science class. That much is obvious. Please disregard any such statements and only treat claims with some citations as at all likely. For example there is a nice NASA site in astrobiology which debunks nearly ALL the 2012 claims very neatly... and don't forget Penn & Teller! They show, with a healthy dollop of humor, just how laughable all the hoaxers are.... I LOVED the guy with the styrofoam balls on the strings!

Don't worry about 2012. Worry about your kids growing up to be sociopaths or not growing up at all simply because you forget to buckle them in your car. Worry about the government selling mining rights to big oil companies that want to drill for Natural Gas within a mile of old atomic bomb tests. (If you live in Colorado... switch to electric stoves)

There are plenty of real things to scare you in this world, you don't have to make anything scary up.

I remember my teacher telling us about alternative energy and how about 80% of all electricity in the U.S. is coal power. And I remember hearing somewhere that coal is worse for the enviroment than gas, so wouldn't electric cars just hurt the enviroment?

Answer
Just copy France and make it 80% nuclear, then the electric cars won't hurt the environment.

Although it should be noted that power plants are more efficient that car petrol engines and also have better pollution control devices fitted (well some of them anyway) so provided you don't lose too much energy in transmission, storage in the batteries and the motor of the car you can actually come out ahead even with a mostly coal power grid (electric cars do tend to be pretty efficient).

Also not having to run the engine when stopped along with regenerative braking will reduce waste of energy when an electric car is in start-stop peak hour driving.

How do I get involved with developing electric car technology?

Q. I have recently watched the movie,"Who killed the electric car" It was great. Now I want to work in this field. I have my degree in BA. I'm not really interesting in going back to school, but wonder what company could I work at to get started?

Answer

This is a tough one, because a job in a startup electric vehicle company could be risky. On the other hand, I couldn't think of a better time to take a chance on the future of electric vehicles. There's a lot of activity in battery research, and prototype electric vehicles.

We are going on a last minute vacation so we are driving and I'm taking my wife and kids on a long road trip. Is it safe and any advice?

Answer
children are only the horror their parents make them into. for the 16th time in my 8yr old's life, we are about to embark on a 20 hour train ride to moscow, a flight to houston, then a 3 hr drive home. for my son, it is simply life. he will climb the deays like a monkey in the train, sit like a gentleman in the plane and dern-well would drive the rented car if i let him. sensibly. so if you know your children, that should be no problem. speak calmly to your children as you have always done. tell them how beautiful thw USA is and they can SEE it as they drive. INTERACT with them- ask them to look for something unusual (i used to notice some electric transmission towers were ballerina style, standing on a single toe rather than the linebackers we had near home, broad, stocky-legged and tall. also, highways and trains run parallel some places. find on your maps (sorry, i still use real maps and assume EVERYBODY has a map) which stretches have railroads and announce to the troops to be on the lookout for trains. if your children like trains... TRY to unplug the evectronics (ganes, dvds, notebooks, ipadpodphone) and engsge each other. don't go to war over it! if gaming is life, let 'em live. try to find towns and cities with interesting things for you AND the children. i suppose each has a digital camera. like paris, texas has an eiffel tower with a cowboy hat on top!
safe- of course, drive 5 mph under the limit, you are not running a railroad (plagarism- no source quoted!!) you are on vacation. have required child seats and boosters WEAR SEAT BELTS (AS AN EXAMPLE TO THE LITTLE ONES) everyone will want a restroom break, expect to stop endlessly. pepsi break, water break- keep drinks in the cabin to let everyone drink. dehydration can cause headaches9 not good on a trip.
ASK everyone what they would like to see. google for places and try to fit in stops in several places.ENJOY the trip. when stopping, if in a safe place, toss a frisbee or football, etc. some small towns have municipal parks ideally located a block or two from the highway.

How should I entertain 3-8 year olds while babysitting?

I need to know because I have a buissness called Summer Sitter and I have no clue how I'm gonna entertain so many kids at once. Don't say watch TV. Thank you! :)

Answer
How cute and what a fun idea. I hope you know what you are in for!

Just be creative!!

i wanna swap it into my car, but i wanna know if its really for me. i want a car that will thrash most on the road, (my cars very light) and one that can keep the traction and handle well also.

is the engine reliable, easy to maintain, anything you can tell me about it would be fantastic, would it be worth the amount of money i will be spending

Answer
No turbo engine is reliable or easy to maintain. Those snails hanging off the engine, along with the increased plumbing, electronics, etc. just make more systems and components with a likelihood to fail. As far as engines go, overall, the RB is very well built, and the engine will last you the lifetime of the car, as long as you don't do anything stupid like arbitrarily turn up the boost a ton, run the engine lean, and melt the engine.

If you have a 240SX here in America, then no it is not easy to maintain. If something breaks in your car, have fun letting it sit for 4-6 weeks while the part is shipped from Japan. You would be spending $15,000 just to get it swapped into your car (assuming that you have a 240SX, because if you have any other car, then you are out of luck). I am just going to throw out there that if you have to ask, you can't afford it, and you won't be able to finish the swap. Also, sticking a huge twin turbo 6 cylinder engine where you probably have some 4 cylinder will NOT help keep traction OR handle well.

To the guy below me:
No turbocharged engine made to be the top-performance engine of a company is "very reliable." It was made to flow a lot of air and to make a lot of power, but this comes at the cost of reliability. Parts break, rubber dries out and cracks, fittings fail, etc. Is it worth having a turbo car? In my opinion, yes. My DSM is a blast to drive, but I bought an old Accord to drive day-to-day so that I am not putting the wear on high performance parts.

As to the price: This is a 17 year old kid with a late 80's BMW asking the question that we are answering. Let's not even consider that this engine will not physically fit in his engine bay, and pretend that he had a 240SX, which, besides the Skyline, is the easiest engine bay to swap the RB26DETT in to. First, is your car set up for the swap, for example do you have the brakes and the suspension necessary to hold an engine that is much bigger, in addition to having turbo hardware? OK, well, see you after the suspension and brake upgrade. Don't forget to add a fuel pump. Also, you will need to add a radiator that will be large enough to handle the increased heat. Regardless, get yourself some new electric fans because the factory ones won't fit with an engine 2 cylinders longer than the factory one. Are you going to run any sort of aftermarket intercooler with that engine? Now, you say $3-5K for the engine, I think that price is optimistic, but let's say $4,000 delivered to your door. Now, which transmission are you going to use? Oh, that's right, now you have to source one from an RB25, another $1,000. Now, you will need a modified oil pan, engine mounts, wiring, driveshaft. Care to chime in on prices for these? Were you going to just stick the engine in? The engine, transmission, turbos, etc. are all used. So, give the engine a good once-over and replace whatever you need. At the very minimum, waterpump and timing belt, although you'd probably do oil pump, gaskets, clutch and flywheel, etc. while the engine is out of the car. Like I said, order them now, because it takes a while for them to be shipped from Japan. Wow, I sure hope that there is nothing else inherently wrong with this used engine and transmission that came out of a wrecked vehicle. OK, now it is time to get the engine into the car. Swap it in with the custom mount kit, clear up any issues, like, oh wait, those twin turbos don't clear the steering rack, awesome. I could keep going with this, but I am NOT just answering questions for the points, or I would not make all of my answers involved. You are looking at minimum $10,000 not including labor, and considering that everything goes right the first time. Ever worked on a car project before? Good luck with that happening.

Who calls that a Design?

OK, so now that we have batteries that can complete high speed, long range comute's without recharging why is it every hybird car look's like it came off the side of a Chevron gas pump or a Kid's Kar toy box. Why must they all be so God awful UGLY? Yes, even the TESLA. Personaly I think it looks like a kind of tricked out Mazda or @ best a BMW /4 which is not that bad but still leaves ALOT to be desired. Why not an electric Panoz or replica Ferrari 328? need a 4 seater? How about a 12volt BMW 850 or Duracell 612 Scaglietti, let's get with it and send the Prius and Fit to the boneyard before they takeover the small minds of mush that are our kids.

Answer
hybrid cars are slow. And heavy. If you want a hybrid car that looks neat, then buy the car, and turn it into a hybrid or electric car. High performance car companies aren't interested in that market, because the majority of people would never be interested in a Ferrari that has the added weight of 10 batteries. They're finely balanced, performance machines - and hybrid's just arent. They have small narrow tires for minimal drag, and ugly aerodynamic designs. I guess trying to save the environment comes at a cost.

I will be transferring to Guam soon. I love my DVR. I want to use one in Guam. I will be living in military housing and will have either local cable or military provided cable. Is there a DVR that I can use with either service?

Answer
Marianas Cable Vision.... call them and ask.

http://www.mcvguam.com/cabletv.html

All stateside appliances work fine on Guam. The power is exactly the same as on the mainland.

I've been there.

1. You definitely want to live on base, in base housing. Even if you could find an acceptable place off base, the electric bill and water bill will drive you to bankruptcy. On base, of course, you don't pay for either.

2. If you have a car then ship it. If you don't have a car, don't worry. There are many "Guam bombs" available being sold by people leaving Guam who don't want to take it with them. However, understand, you will need a car. There's nothing that resembles public transportation on Guam.

3. Guam has DOD schools if you have kids. The DOD schools are fantastic. The public schools are horrible.

4. Crime is a big problem on Guam.

5. Gasoline is expenisve and imported from Singapore.

6. Plan on doing all your shopping on base.

7. The beach at Andersen AFB is a national treasure. You'll see what I mean when you get there.

8. Take the typhoon threat serious. Make a typhoon survival kit and stash it in your "shelter" base housing. There's nothing like watching the sheer panic 12 hours before the onset of damaging winds when unprepared people attack the BX, Commisary and Mini Marts looking for supplies.

9. If I could do it over again the one thing I'd take, even if I had to borrow the money to buy it, is a small, Honda power generator. Not a big one!!! Check out this link...

http://www.hondapowerequipment.com/gensu...

The EU2000 would be perfect for Guam. They are quiet and very fuel efficient. They don't produce a lot of power, but they'll keep you in ice, the lights on and the fans running. It doesn't sound like much now, but when you're in the tropics, living in concrete, "tyhpoon proof" houses, with no power you'll learn to worship that generator.

Remember, when (not "if" but when) you get hit with a typhoon you could be without electric power for weeks.

When you leave Guam you can sell if for double what you paid for it. Believe me on this.

10. Last, start reading the local paper online so you get a feel for the place and the current issues. Here's the link....

Do you believe DOST should have a big budget in order to make our country a little more progessive?

delive_ran

DOST-Department Of Science and Technology of the Philippines. Technology brought out the Japanese out of the ashes of World War2 and became the leading electronics manufacturer, first in Southest Asia then the world. Now it is Korea's turn to follow the footstep of their rival Japanese, while China is lurking in the shadow. While we are still climbing coconut tree and making tuba for the drinking session this night. Why can't we be like them even half of what they know would be fine. I was also hoping that DOST should be attach to the Philippines military in building weapons for our own defense and offense capability. With the present nano technology we can harness it's potential by making not only body armor steel platted or titanium built for police officers during heavy firefight but could also monitor their pulse/heart and vital sign. I also thought about a shoes that can monitor a person's vital sign from heart/pulse/blood rate all because of a microchip that is embedded in the sole of the shoes and the monitoring screen is place in the wrist just like a watch and small like an MP3. All he/she have to do is turn on to check his/her condition every now and then while at work or at play. I suppose my idea is not appropriate in Philippines condition. Sabi nga mababaw magisip ang Filipino just look at some of the questionnaire here, at mababaw din ang kaligayahan. I know...I know this idea wouldn't work in the Philippines. Thank you for telling me. But still believe that technology is the answer to bring forth our country to another dimension. So what do you think this time?

Answer
The first step is population control. I just watched a segment in the local channel that a mother is doing 5 jobs to support her ten kids. Economics states that there is scarcity of resources, if people keep on multiplying, soon the resources will be depleted. This is the main reason filipinos go overseas, to find better opportunities.

The second step is to down-size the government. We have too many people in the goverment. The rest should be relocated to private companies. There is also too much red tape and lack of trust in the government. If we can almost privatize the governemnt system, wherein the employees have sufficient earnings, I don't think they will still be corrupt. Well, there are minor exceptions, but they should be punished immediately.

The third step is to bring back capital punishment. The government is wasting money prolonging the cases of inmates. We are paying for the regional trial courts, the court of appeals and supreme court. Why in China, after stabbing 28 children, he gets executed the next month. In Singapore, the 23 year old drug dealer caught was hung after only several months. Justice should be swift and fair.

The last step is good coordination. As of now, each department is seeking their own welfare. Just check the roads. After DPWH has repaired a road, here comes MWSS or PLDT destroying the new asphalt and doing what benefits them. That's just unnecessary expenses they will try to recover through their consumers.

So if let's say the Government has already garnered savings from what I've stated above, where shall they invest it? I'd say agriculture and public transport system. We can be the main supplier for asia for rice and sugar. Plus this will also give the farmers better earnings.

For example, Singapore doesn't have rice fields, but they demand rice. That's go with other neighboring countries. The public transport system will do wonders to our financial economy. By car, it takes 1 hour to go from Makati to Ortigas for my meeting at 10 AM. Think about the wasted time here. Think about workers from Makati commuting to Laguna. It takes 2 hours to get home and spend family time.

As for your theory, there was a time that Filipino Inventors gained support from the government. But to do this will be risky also for the government. They have to shoulder losses. It's better to invest in education to produce nuclear scientists and such.

I remember my mother told me that a Filipina sat with her on a plane for a business trip. It turned out the woman was seeking research funding from a foreign country. She has the initial developments of turning soiled water into almost potable water. She went to the government but was not able to get any support. Just think how it can benefit Ilog Pasig if ever it had materialized. Don't think about war or weapons, and how we can eradicate threats.

Think long-term what are the other benefits research can make, like miracle-rice or electric cars, or we can invest in infrastructure. All of our major roads and public transport were done by foreign companies and contractors. We should be innovative and find solutions and how to make this world better and more efficient.

I am in the prosess of starting a new business of converting older gas cars and small pick-ups to electric power. I have the technology and a source for all the parts needed, I just don't have the money to get off the ground. My credit is not so good, so I am looking for private investors. This is a much needed product that will help reduce the usage of fossel fuels and greenhouse gases. If anyone out there can help, please let me know.

There are several Venture Capital firms that will foot the bill for this venture if you have the right credentials and the right patents. It is very difficult to find and secure "Angel" investors and you may eventually lose your company if you are not saavy enough to deal with this type of investor.

CMGI has a division that handles green investments. There are also several brokers that can steer you in the right direction on this type of thing. There are also people that can steer you in the wrong direction. E-mail me if you have any more questions.

What car is good for converting to an electric car?

What car is good for converting to an electric car?
I'm interested in a car that is lightweight, has a manual transmission, and has room for batteries. I'm trying to convert a gas car to an electric car, and I need one that is light, has manual transmission, room for batteries, etc, etc. Has anyone done that and has advice/know a good car for it? I have a limited price range, and I need a relatively cheap car for it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Answer
To convert a car to electric, you will find that you don't need many of the thing at the gas car did, for instance the gas tank, radiator, and motor.
the electric motor is much smaller the a gas one.
many people are building a battery pack to go where the gas tank was along with using the extra space in the engine compartment.
this is a link to what some others have done.

I just read up on some exciting new electric cars that will be coming out in the next 3 years that match my budget and will have up to 300 mpg!!!

But I was wondering, how these cars would handle on a street after a ice storm? The car would be great for me, but i live in the midwest and require a car that can get around ice and snow.

The information I would like to have is the typical weight an electric car, front/rear wheel drive, and inside space.

I think traction would be as good as a traditional car. I wonder if cold temperature will affect battery power and range.

Wouldn't having an electric car send your electricity bill through the roof?

Matthew S

I guess I am not green enough to understand--the purpose of the electric car is to make the world a better place. Would getting a car that runs all on electricity cost you a lot for your electricity bill? I didn't know if it was something you had to plug in, like an electric golf cart. In the end, wouldn't you pay more for electricity then gas. Explain.

Answer
It would increase your electric bill, and it would decrease your gasoline bill by even more.

Electric cars cost 2-3 cents per mile to recharge. A 30 mpg gas car costs 10 cents per mile if gasoline is $3/gallon.

That's pretty easy math.

As of July 2008, plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles are not yet in production. However, Toyota,[3] General Motors,[4] Ford,[5] Chinese automaker BYD Auto,[6] California startups Fisker Automotive[7] and Aptera Motors,[8] and Volkswagen[9] have announced their intention to introduce production PHEV automobiles. The PHEV-60 BYD F6DM sedan and F3DM hatchback are expected in 2009;[10] the luxury Fisker Karma PHEV-50 sports car is slated for late 2009; and the Toyota Prius, GM's PHEV-40 Chevrolet Volt and Saturn Vue and the Volkswagen Golf PHEV50km plug-ins are expected in 2010.[11][12] Conversion kits and services are available to convert production model hybrid vehicles to plug-ins.[13][14] Most PHEVs on the road in the U.S. are conversions of 2004 or later Toyota Prius models, which have had plug-in charging added and their electric-only range extended.

How Many Years Does the Battery in a Prius Last?

Dave

I'm really considering buying a Prius because me and my family have been scraping pennies to put gas in the tank these days. My moms Ford Taurus just ran out of gas the other day and that was the last straw for me. We are dumping around 30 bucks a week of our hard earned cash into that car, and enough is enough. I don't know much about hybrids or electric cars so I want to know how many years can I get out of the battery in the Prius before it needs to be replaced? Especially since i'm looking at a few used 2010 Prius' with around 37-47k miles on them. Are they low maintenance? What kind of gas savings can I expect to get? I just need reliable, low cost transportation back and forth to school.
And I know there is an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty but will the battery last longer than that? I don't want to be replacing a battery every 8 years.

Answer
The mean time between failures for the 2004+ Prius traction battery isn't really known because not enough Prius have reached 300,000 to 400,000 miles yet. There are Prius owners with over 400,000 miles on the original battery. For Prius owners, the traction battery is a non-issue, similar to how an automatic transmission is a non-issue to old fashioned car drivers. The replacement price isn't that high and has been going down every years. It's under $2000 plus $500 installation for a new battery.

http://www.trademotion.com/parts/2012/TOYOTA/PRIUS/?siteid=213747&vehicleid=1503615&section=HYBRID%20COMPONENTS

Or you can get rebuilt batteries from companies like http://www.re-involt.com/ (Though right now they really only do 2001-2003 Prius batteries because there haven't been enough 2004+ batteries fail. Note that the 2001-2003 use the older style batteries which don't dissipate heat as evenly). Over half the 2001-2003 Prius with the older style battery are still on the original battery, so I wouldn't put all that much faith in statements like "only lasts ten years". Also GM doesn't use the same chemistry as Toyota. GM uses LiOn while Toyota uses NiMH. (Toyota does use LiOn but only in the plug-in-prius).

http://bc.ctvnews.ca/hybrids-prove-very-reliable-1.599754

You can also obtain a battery from a newer wreck for about $500. So, just like an automatic transmission, there are many choices should it fail.

Battery life also depends on environmental conditions.

The Prius also has a small 12V auxiliary battery which lasts about five years.

2004 Prius MPG from the logbook. (Complete years only):
2003-2004 -- 50.8 mpg 17,628 miles
2005 -- 52.6 mpg 14,688 miles
2006 -- 56.3 mpg 16,174 miles
2007 -- 57.3 mpg 18,384 miles
2008 -- 59.9 mpg 21,755 miles
2009 -- 61.4 mpg 16,177 miles
2010 -- 65.2 mpg 12,134 miles
2011 -- 66.9 mpg 11,272 miles

There is a book called electricity for fuel that sells for like $70 bucks online and they claim that it will show you an easy way to convert any car to electric on a $600 budget. Sounds like BS to me. Anybody know anything about this?

Answer
Sure but not for 600. Batteries are not that bad if you import like I did. 20 sets of li-ions with shipping from china for 7000 that's 350 a set. so far I built 2 getting ready to built 2 more for the kids as soon as they realize you can't convert a hummer 2, weight is an issue with EV's.
try here the have everything you need plus books and video's for a reasonable price.
http://www.electroauto.com/index.html
I have 2 I built myself, 1 is an 87 Omni the wife's grocery getter, It's a single speed with a top end about 70mph but most efficient at 35. Mine is an 86 Fiero, I built it as a performance car, it has twin Solectra AC55 motors and controllers each run through 5 speed Getrag transaxils. The rear is the Fiero's the front however came from a Cavalier RS. The Fiero does the 1/4 mile in 9.9 seconds about 6 times on a full charge. And I could probably get that down to low 9's or even upper 8's when I change the training gears and adjust ratio's.

both of these cars are good weather only, spring summer and fall. there is no longer a heater or ac. still has wipers for rain but that's all. Rack and pinion - power stearing was stripped down and rebuilt to manual now. no power anything. they both where around 2600# when I started and after stripping them down, some welding for battery cradles and building back up as an EV there now around 2100# which is still a little heavy for an EV to have good range. I know for a fact the omni can go 103 miles on a charge and still had some left over.

How can I make a homemade electric generator to power my house?

swaggerifi

I was thinking about buying used car batteries from the junk yard and connecting them with jumper cables then testing the connected batteries with a battery tester to see how many volts it has. I havent tried this yet so I dont know if it will work do you guys have any idea on how to make a generator so I wont have to pay for power

Answer
To make an electrical generator, you need to have a length of wound copper wire rotating inside a magnetic field (refer to elementary physics).

Gasoline/diesel/etc. generators run basically like your car's engine, but instead of turning wheels, it uses the motion to rotate the wire inside the magnetic field, producing electricity. Remember, energy can't be created or destroyed. The chemical potential energy in your combustible fuel is being converted to kinetic energy, which is being converted into electrical energy.

A wind turbine is more "free" in that you don't have to go out and buy drums of oil to make your electricity. But it works on the same principle, but in this case, it's the turbine blades catching the wind that spins the copper loop, creating electricity.

As far as your batteries go, you may be able to store it there, but to charge any battery, from AA to car, you need the correct circuit and voltage, or nothing will happen. So you probably can't use your batteries. But if you can, all that you an do is store the potential energy there, and use it at a later time.

But if you just want to play with making a generator, try this:

First, you need to choose the energy source that you want to convert into electricity. You can use a stationary bicycle, a water wheel, wind turbine, a bored child willing to do some menial work on a set of gears, or virtually anything else with a rotating axle. You do have to choose the source, because as I said - you can't get energy from nothing.

Take that copper wire that I talked about, and make that loop that I also talked about, but leave two ends free (you need that to form the electric circuit). The larger the number of turns in the loop, the more electricity you can generate for the same amount of rotation. Kind of like an electric pulley system, to use a bad analogy.

Take your loop, and connect it to your energy source. You need to be able to rotate the loop end-over-end, without twisting the two connecting wires about each other, because if they do, you'll get a short circuit, and boom, it's done. One way to successfully accomplish this is to connect one wire to the rotating axle and the other wire to a conducting "brush" that maintains contact with a second conductor.

Make sure that you've sufficiently supported the loop so that it's out of the way of any moving parts of the energy source (such as your legs and the pedals if you pay a seven year old to ride a bicycle that never goes anywhere - give them one of those hand-held video games, they'll never notice). To make sure that you get this right, you may need to reinforce your loop with plastic or another light (but sturdy) material.

Grab some magnets (permanent magnets), and arrange them around the loop so that the loop can rotate freely between them. Take care to ensure that you arrange the magnets to maximize the field strength. One good and simple method is to make the south end of one magnet face the north end of another.

Stick the two conductors on your energy source to a battery, circuit, chainsaw, whatever it is that you want to drive. Again, you need to keep your wires separate to avoid a short circuit, so you'll need to use some kind of brush mechanism again, or whatever more clever thing that you can come up with that I haven't considered.

Poke the kid and get him to start peddling, or release your turbine to the wind, whatever you want. The amount of energy that you get from your turbine will depend on the efficiency of its construction, materials used, and how much mechanical energy us put in to drive it and spin the turbine itself (a faster peddling kid will give you more electricity than a slower one).

Run with it. A home-built turbine is unlikely to provide your house with any really useful power, unless you've really taken some time, money, and thought into it (which is possible). But you might run some simple things from your standard knock-off generator, such as perhaps basement lighting, that kind of thing.

Answer
Monitor your electricity use by buying a Kill-A-Watt or other such monitor.

http://the-gadgeteer.com/review/kill_a_watt_electric_usage_monitor_review

'An average household uses about 4300kWh of electricity each year. This results in emissions of over 2 tonnes of CO2 per household, or ¾ tonne per person - just for domestic electricity supply. In comparison, total CO2 emissions per person in the UK are around 10 tonnes, and emissions per person in India are about 1 tonne. Luckily, it is possible to cut domestic electricity use in half with simple energy efficiency measures.
'This table shows how electricity use is divided up in an average house (excluding electric heating):

Lighting 19%
Cold Appliances 18%
Wet Appliancs 15%
Cooking 15%
Consumer Electronics 19%
ICT (computers, etc) 9%
Other 5%'

http://www.expatforum.com/articles/cost-of-living/cost-of-living-in-malaysia.html

Thats a good article on cost of living in that area...

It says the cost of living for a house is around 100 to 150 euros now based on your said income of 8500 ringgits = 1,697 euros you should be more than ok.

But according to this gentlman it would seem somewhat more expensive...Decent (furnished) condo in one of the Damansaras or such as TTDI/Sri Hartamas (per month):-
One-bedroomed : RM2,000 perhaps less.
3-4 bedroomed : RM3-4,000
Electricity : RM80-RM250 (depending on # of occupants)
Water/Indah Water : RM20-RM50
Gas : RM30-40
Eating out at local foodstalls : RM5-RM10 per person per meal
Eating out at western restaurants : RM25-RM100 per person per meal.
Draught beer in a pub : RM8-RM12 per mug (1/2 pint). Look for "happy hours"!
Premium cigarettes : RM9 per 20-box.
Taxis from the named suburbs to city centre : RM15-RM20 each way.
Car hire : RM120-RM150 per day (but much better rates for long term lease)
Petrol : RM1.80 per litre

I'd personally recommend you look around in TTDI, especially if your wife and daughter join you, as this is close by the huge shopping complexes of 1 Utama and Mutiara Damansara, which will be convenient for your wife (no need to go downtown for anything). There are also international schools in the vicinity, and it's generally quite a pleasant (green) and safe area where good English is spoken by almost 100% of the residents and shop/business keepers.
Many ex-pats incline to Mont Kiara, but this is rapidly becoming an oppressive concrete jungle.
There are usually units to rent in Villa Flora or Kiara Park at (fairly) reasonable rates, both of which are well-run, secure condominiums, and a few minutes from the Kenchala (sp) link, which will scoot you into and out of town.

Apparently its all about location...Well, if you don't really mind the inaccessibility to foreign grocers, pubs or a decent Montessori, I'd recommend, since your office is in KL, to stay in somewhere like Sentul or Gombak. You can get a decent 2-room apartment for about RM700. Electricity, let's just say you have no air-con but you have a computer, fridge, hot-water shower, electric kettle and iron, perhaps RM100. Food I don't know how to quote, but to get 3 decent meals a day (and I'm talking about keeping it about RM20 per person per day) it would cost about RM2000 for 3 people. The rest for transport it depends, you taking LRT, car, taxi or bus? Let's just say you take the LRT, I'd give it about RM100. Well, I guess all in all, to just survive decently, you'd need about RM3000 for you and your family.

http://board.classifieds1000.com/Malaysia/Expat/Living_in_Malaysia

Its a multi racial country. Living in the cities you get everything that Singapore has but less expensive. Living in smaller towns, its cheaper. Travelling from North to South by driving takes 7 hours via highways with tolls. Cost of living: Heavy Breakfast RM4.00, Heavy Lunch + Juice RM9.00, Heavy Tea time RM 4.00, Heavy Dinner + Juice RM 10.00 and Supper RM 5.00.
We Malaysian eat hell of a lot. There are stalls, shops everywhere and every time is food. Even McDonalds is 24/7.

Cities Rent a room Rm300 per month, towns RM300 the whole house. No guns, only the government has it and the underworld drug dealers. Death to all drug peddlers. You can't find gunshops and very limited shooting range. Even rich people can't get guns. Excellent schools and hospitals. English widely spoken. Imagine Malaysian nurses can easily migrate to Australia, just pass the IELTS tests. That's quality. Learn more for those interested. Especially the British, UK the senior citizen should just sell their London home and live in Malaysia. Small homes in London cost 1 million pounds that's RM 7 million. Can live like kings and queens with full servants in Kuala Lumpur, balance of monies put into unit trust. Australia to KL cheap flights coming very soon estimated RM 1, 200 return.

How do I convince my husband that we can afford to move?

Becalek

We are currently living in a government assisted apartment with 3 bedrooms 1 bath central heat and air, and new windows. The rooms are very small and with 2 daughters (14 and 7) we are very cramped. I recently found a brick house for rent in an area where I have been really wanting to move to. It is very close to both my mother and our church. The school district is the same but just a different school. My oldest daughter will be starting high school next year and the high school is the same. My youngest daughter will have to change schools, but she really wants to anyway. The girls and I looked at the house and fell in LOVE with it and desperately want to move there. It is a 2 bedroom 1 bath country house with a big kitchen, bigger bedrooms big living room and a den (that we can use as master bedroom) Utility room a big yard, barn for kids to play in a carport and an additional 2 car barn, pets are allowed has a range celling fans in every room and a trampoline that stays with house. Only hang-ups are electric wall heaters and old but sturdy windows. The big hang-up is that my husband does not like to pay RENT, He would rather make a house payment so we could own a house instead of paying to live in someone else's house. But if they decide to sell we will have 1st option to buy. Well he says we can't afford it anyway the rent is $400 a month (which I believe is really great.) like I said right now we live in a government assisted apartment,no pets, no place for girls to play, their bikes got stolen, have to pay to do laundry($60 a month) have electric and gas bills and $144 rent verses $400 a month rent just electric bill and our own washer and dryer. He is disabled and receives $710 a month we get food stamps and I am working for his mother at her cake shop.My feeling is that we can't afford not to move.

Answer
Your husband according to your previous question from 6 months ago is very overweight and does nothing all day but eat. You mean to say this man who gets free food, free disability, free rent has an issue about throwing away money on rent? No way your family is purchasing a home anytime soon. Not with a man who doesn't work because of a disability caused by his own lack of control. I don't mean to sound cynical but, I don't see how he has any place making a fuss about paying rent when you guys barely pay anything right now, thanks to your fellow tax payers.

If buying a home is a priority for him, he needs to do something about his health and get your entire family off all forms of public assistance. Since that is not happening anytime soon, I would say rent the home. They don't give mortgages to people who don't have a down payment saved up. And he cannot have a big savings account if he wants to keep his disability check.
