Hello. I am a 16 year old high school junior searching for a potential career I would want to have in the future and what I would want to major in, in collage. I thought about environmental engineering for a while (probably just for the title) but found upon greater research that it would be dealing a lot with fixing problems that deal with human health like waste water management and air quality control. Is there any other profession that deals with helping the environment? Solar panels and electric cars really interest me. Could electrical engineering be a good fit for that?

Answer
Biologist or park/forest ranger.electric cars are not taking off like people thought they would and solar companies are going out of business daily.

I am interested in the chevy volt cars and need to know how much they cost?

I would also like informaion of the zenn, flybo, and leaf electric cars.

Answer
The Chevrolet Volt will cost between $37,000 and $42,000 (estimated price), but as stated before you will get Government rebates (I believe $7,500). It runs on electricity for 40 miles, and then will switch to a small gasoline powered engine/generator. So if you drive less than 40 miles a day, you won't use any gasoline at all. The Volt has also been a concept for a few years now, and has lots of engineering in it. It isn't a rushed job like the Nissan Leaf.

Not only is the Nissan Leaf ugly, but it was rushed into production (never a good thing) and will only drive about 100 miles on a charge. It will supposedly cost about $32,000 before any rebates. You will also have to install a Home Charging system (about $2,500 or more depending on how old your home is), and since the Leaf is a 100% electric car (does NOT run on Gasoline at all), you are running the risk of running out of energy and being stranded since recharging stations are not commonly available yet (but they are being built). Also, it will take about 20 hrs to fully charge a completely depleted Battery on the Nissan Leaf with a 110/120 V outlet.

The ZENN Electric car is a virtual unknown, only has a 35 mile range, and even though it will cost an estimated $13,000, it is small and looks like it was crudely built. The quality just isn't there (you get what you pay for). It is about the size of a Smart Car in comparison, and has a 30hp electric motor, and only has a top speed of 25 miles an hour. It cannot be driven on the highway, or most common roads for that matter. Its like an electric golfcart, lol. Don't waste your money on it.

The Flybo is a Chinese built copy of the Smart Car, but is Electric as well. It has a range of up to 100 miles, costs a little over $10,000, and has a top speed of 42 miles per hour so it is driveable on regular roads but will not be good for highway use.

Overall, the Chevrolet Volt is the clear winner. Yes it costs more, but it is the best looking, it is designed to be a daily driven car that produces zero emissions, it is getting great reviews, and it is designed to last and be reliable. Go with a Volt, you will not regret it.
