Determining the probability of an electric car charging station being available?

John

Hi there,

I'm just wondering if anybody would know of a way of determining the probability of an event.

I trying to figure out how I could calculate the probability of a charging station for an electric car being available when a person arrives at their destination.

I have the travel data for cars in terms of the number of journeys, journey start and end times and dates etc.

Say there is 50,000 charging stations in a country also.

Is there anyway of working out a rough estimate of this?

Thank you

John

Answer
Since electric cars can charge from regular electric outlets - in addition to charging stations - I think the odds of an electric outlet being available just about anywhere are pretty good.
*
As for the mathematics of figuring the average availability of charging stations - the challenge is that charging stations are not evenly distributed geographically. If a given state has 200 charging stations, they are likely to all be concentrated in a few urban areas.
*
The real solution is to examine a map of charging stations before traveling, like this one:
http://www.chargepoint.net/find-stations.php
*
Also some electric cars - like the Leaf - have charging locations in their GPS map database, so the car can direct you to one if you need it.
*
I'm an old EV hobbyist, we've been driving electric cars since before there were charging stations. If you are a nice person, and offer to do business with a store or restaurant, you can usually work out permission to charge from an outdoor outlet (most buildings have one somewhere.)

electric cars?

hey everybody do u think its a good idea to have electric car?and how much do they cost? are they over twenty grand?do you still have to put gas in thoes cars?

Answer
Electric cars are great. They're much friendlier for the environment than gas cars. Right now the best available is the ZAP Xebra:

http://www.zapworld.com/electric-vehicles/electric-cars/xebra-sedan

But there are many really nice EVs set to come out soon.

Available in California in October 2008, the Aptera typ-1e will cost about $27,000 with a top speed of 95 mph and range of 120 miles per charge.

http://www.aptera.com/details.php

Soon thereafter Aptera will introduce the typ-1h, a plug-in hybrid version of the typ-1e with a 40-60 mile range on purely electrical energy, and a range of over 600 miles total when in electric/gas hybrid mode, for around $30,000. On a 120 mile trip, the typ-1h will get 300 miles per gallon. The shorter the trip, the higher the efficiency.

http://www.aptera.com/details.php

Available in 2009, the ZAP Alias will cost $30,000, have a top speed of 100 mph, and a range of 100 miles per charge.

http://zapworld.com/electric-vehicles/electric-cars/zap-alias

Soon thereafter the ZAP-X will be available at a cost of $60,000 with a top speed of 155 mph and a range of 350 miles per charge.

http://zapworld.com/electric-vehicles/electric-cars/zap-x

Available in 2009, the Miles Javlon will cost $30,000 with a top speed of 80 mph and a range of 120 miles per charge.

http://www.milesev.com/

Phoenix Motorcars will start selling their SUT to individuals in 2009. It will cost $45,000 and have a top speed of 100 mph with a range of 100+ miles per charge.

http://phoenixmotorcars.com/

Available in 2009, the cityZENN will have a 250 mile range and 80 mph top speed. The price has not yet been set.

What's the fastest electric car currently available?

Jay

Answer
Electric show their best snapping your neck back when accelerating from a dead stop, when their full torque at zero rpm comes into play.
The Shelby Ultimate Aero Electric Car is claiming to be the fastest electric car with 2 motors delivering 1,000 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque, capable of reaching 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and peaking at a speed of 208 mph ( The original Aero was powered by 1,183 hp and 1094 lb-ft gas engine) premiered in Jan 2009, we'll have to wait to see them delivered, there were claims about charging time that may have been fumbled by a press agent. One commenter calculated that a 10 minute charge from 110v would be depleted at full throttle in less than 2 seconds.

thefutureofthings.com/pod/6586/shelby-ultimate-aero-electric-car.html

Seems like the Tesla Roadster Sport is just about the quickest available production car with 3.7 seconds 0-60 time and 12.643 sec @ about 113.9 mph 1/4 mile, the single gear car's top speed is governor limited to 125mph (14,000 revs)

Here's a collection of about 10 production and purpose built electric cars that do 0-60 in 4 seconds.

hubpages.com/hub/High-Performance-Electric-Cars

One unlikely 4 sec 0-60 design design, the Tango was designed to fit in 1/2 of a carpool lane as a congestion solution, the narrow car is kept from falling over by 1000 lbs of batteries in the under-chassis.

Why aren't electric cars and hydrogen-cell cars more widely available to the public?

Samian Qua

I just read this article in ABC News today:
http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/PainAtThePump/Story?id=5065383&page=1

And it got me thinking, "why can't we (the public) buy the same car that Jamie Lee Curtis can?!"
The Japanese sure don't seem to have all that respect for the oil companies...

Answer
Several electric car models were once available back in the 1990s. However, automakers ensured that their own creation was destroyed because they stood to lose profits from the frequent maintenance required for the gasoline-based internal combustion engine. Plus, Chevron purchased a huge stake in a battery-making firm from GM to ensure such battery technology never saw the light of day. One other culprit in the EV's demise? The hydrogen fuel cell!

The problem with hydrogen fuel cells is that they are extremely expensive to make (billions of dollars spent for technology that still has yet to make it out in the market even after 15 yrs or so of development). Thus, they will not be economically viable for at least another 20 years or so.

I'd say bring back the electric car. It is more efficient and, ultimately, more viable. Plus, it will do more to truly reduce our reliance upon oil.

Is Obama crazy or is he BSing the people again with this electric car BS?

Q. Government Motors has come up with yet another boondoggle as big as the Obama stimulus. The Volt is the most ridiculous folly I have ever heard of. How many people in today or tomorrows economy can afford a 45,000$ car with a battery in it that cost 10,000$. It wont be like well my battery is no good got to go to Wal Mart and spend 40.00. They have got to be kidding me probably Bill Gates will have one or Steve Jobs but I dont see any ordinary people with good sense buying this boondoggle. You can buy a lot of gas for the 10000$ cost of a battery. This sounds like another Chevrolet Vega to me.

Answer
The Volt is not an Electric Car. It is a sometimes series hybrid that cannot even charge its batteries with the engine. http://www.insideline.com/chevrolet/volt/2011/no-revolting-the-volt-chevy-battery-does-not-recharge-while-driving.html

It is based on the same technology that GM used in its Electro-motive division from 1930 to 2005 to build diesel/electric locomotive engines.

Beginning Building RC Car/Trucks?

AndrewAIID

I want to get into RC car/trucks I would like to know where to start? I want a simple build 1:10 scale truck to take off in dirt and what not. What do i need to build one? I don't want like a starter kit with all the parts, I would like to buy all the components separately and build. Could anyone give me a list of what parts I'd need for just a simple build that wont break my wallet. Also if anyone can give me their opinion on parts the favor most and/or what parts go together best. I'm new and never played with an rc car except walmart junkers would to tackle this head on piece by piece to make my own.

Answer
hey man, as an experienced rc hobbyist I dont recommend doing that.......Only reason is because you can not basically build one from the ground up...you have to buy kits or premade and modify/build them......

If you want to really enjoy it and get a assload of experience do this, buy a SMALL starter truck

I started out on a team losi mini lst2......drive that for about 6 months.....get the feel of rc cars, learn every manipulation, maneuver, and control about it. Learn how to take care of it and keep it properly maintained.

Then take it COMPLETELY apart... (except electronics like the esc and steering servo's) and rebuild it.....you will feel so confident and accomplished about it....

after 6 months at LEAST.....then buy a redcat racing volcano epx pro.....it is a basic 1/10th scale brushless truck (you can start out with this one too) if starting out do the same thing, but with this truck.......if you already started out with the lst2...then spend about 2-3weeks learning the new truck all over again ( until you are confident that you can drive that truck better than anyone else)...then take it to a local race, or find some friends locally that you can race for a small entry fee....

You will beat everyone almost guarenteed if you folllow what I say and you will earn money for better cars.......the first time I raced my truck ( I was 14) I expected to get my ass spanked and sent home......I left with 1st place trophy, 200$ check, 20$ in rc store credit and a lifetime membership card to their store ( usually 5.99 a month)........all the racers there were either grown men that did not have time to practice...or little kids that ride on their daddies fat wallet and expect their 9000mph car to kill everyone else.

After you get bored with these two trucks, then deeply think if you are ready to commit to a REAL hobby in rc racing, pursue working in a local hobby store and purchasing a really nice rc car to upgrade/race with.

Basically this is what I did....And I was VERY happy and successful in this hobby, I almost went in the state races and maybe nationals....but I realized that You will spend more money than you will make with these little guys...

Also, here is a video I made when I was 12!!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ht-XBwHHkds

it's really bad, but considering everyone else my age could only drive in modified straight lines I won alot of friendly races and competetition.

EDIT: also, to give u an idea how complex these little bastards are, just look at the volcano epx pro's user manual http://content.yudu.com/Library/A17zpn/RedcatRacingElectric/resources/index.htm?referrerUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.yudu.com%2Fitem%2Fdetails%2F57112%2FRedcat-Racing-Electric-Vehicle-Manual

What new technology was invented when you were a teen? PLease include your age?

Crisital

if you are between ages
20-29,
30-39,
50-59,
60-69,
70-79,
80and up

Please include how old you are and what technology was invented.your age should fall between those ranges. thank you!

(sorry not for people between 12-19...sorry!)

Answer
55. OK. First, especially back then, newly invented technology often took 10-15, sometimes 20 years, before the average person could get, or afford it.

But some of things that were just coming into use in the 60's. Color TV was huge. If you were the first family on the block to have a color TV, you were the most popular kid. Even though only a hand few of shows were broadcast in color.

Eight track tapes were new. But only because you could play them in the car. Otherwise, the old vinyl records were still the norm.

Few people had home air conditioners (window). They were just starting to become available. No schools had them.

Gas-motor powered lawn mowers were just coming out. Most people had the old manual, non motorized push mowers

Jet aircraft was new. The military had just achieved Mach 1 speed, breaking the sound barrier. As kids were got all excited when we heard the sonic booms. A big event.

We all had rotary phones. Push buttons had been invented, but were not generally offered or available until the 70's

Electric guitars came out in the 60's. The first time you saw Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton use one, and make it talk, it freaked you out.

Every kid had a transistor radio. Most were AM only, but some AM-FM. They were the Walkman or I-Pod of our time. Nobody listened to FM. Cars had only AM radios

Some people, but most schools had projectors, reel to reel tape. If you were lucky enough to see a computer, it was probably in a government building, and was the size of your kitchen refrigerator.

And if you went to a really large city, you could ride the escalator, and walk through an automatic door that opened for you.

There was probably more advanced technologies at the time. But only the very rich could afford them, and we never even saw them

Why Do We Need Cars At All?

SusanBrei

Before WWII, very few Americans owned cars. Cities were dense, walkable, and well-connected with electric trolleys. MUCH less energy was spent on the simple act of getting around. Our national train system was the envy of the world, so people could travel to most destinations without a car and businesses could ship merchandise without the need for trucks. Once again, MUCH less energy was spent for travel and shipping.

We now live in a society where you almost HAVE to own a car to function. Car companies dumped the cost of road building and maintenance on us to keep this system running. Retailers have dumped the cost of shipping/delivery on us as consumers. We have to buy a car, maintain it, insure it and fuel it just to go to work, school, church and the grocery store. It makes no sense. We could do all of these things without cars, save ourselves the money, and enjoy better health and air quality.

Sprawling suburbs are directly correlated with growing rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Kids can't walk to school or any other civic function anymore. I've heard it said that corporations such as Wal-Mart require this living arrangement, calling it an "economy of scale". Well, cities can be scaled up as well as out, and logically, why should we foot the bill to keep Wal-Mart in business?

Why do we need cars? Why not highly-efficient mass-transit, biking and walking (like many international cities)? If you feel it's because of "the market", please explain why most American cities have zoning laws that prevent walkable, car-free neighborhoods from being built. Please explain why car-free environments such as Disneyland or Venice are so popular. I want to know why we really NEED cars (not WANT them).

Answer
Yes, it's very unfortunate how much we rely on cars in Western culture, but going back now wouldn't be a practical option. There would be too much protest, and the infrastructure isn't currently in place to support a car-free population.
I believe the answer is in increasing the efficiency of our cars (the current average efficiency is less than 1%), and improving new technologies such as electric and hydrogen cars.

I am totally opposed to building the "new" suburbs that are like those little groups of cookie-cutter houses, without any stores, services, or facilities within walking distance, no public transit, and not even any sidwalks, to discourage people from leaving their homes without their cars, it would seem!

Do you remember anything unique about your parents car when you were a kid?

Q. Like my Dad's 1941 Packard had electric windows, how about your Dad's car?

Answer
The first I remember was a 40's- something Chevy ton and a half flatbed truck. Dad had built racks and a canvas tent on it that we lived out of and we were po' folk cherry pickers in Michigan (shades of Grapes of Wrath) . Soon after that season, dad got a good technical job in Dow Chemical, life was much easier after that (but not near as much fun)

For all you people who think electric cars are good...?

Where the F do you people think electricity comes from ????
Marko Polio- But it doesn't. And don't hold your breath that it will.
linlyons- 43% best answer. Well this is one question you WON'T win the best answer...as long as I don't forget about this and this question goes into voting...(DOH)
Also, linlyons, power plants be come less efficient the further away the power gets sent. And I would imagine that GAS is much cleaner than black COAL which is what most power plants run on.

Answer
Electric cars are a good idea. If you want to spend more money, drive a small car with less power, room, comfort and range, to make a slight reduction in pollution. Sounds like something every American should do. Spend more to get less. And brag about how "green" we are.

I own a 1979 Ford van. It's a monster. It gets only 10 MPG. But I routinely haul up to 4 tons at a time with it. I suppose I could replace it with an electric car. $40,000 for an electric car that has a range of 35 miles and will haul about 200 lbs per trip. That's only about 40 trips instead of one. Since there is no place along the way to recharge my car I can only travel about 17 miles one way. What do I do if I have to travel more than 17 miles at a time? And how much is it costing me in electricity for the extra 39 trips? I don't know about others, but my time is valuable. I don't want to make an extra 39 trips and spend more time and money just so the eco freaks will like me.

It takes less time and less money to drive my van than it does to drive an electric car so why would I change? And to reduce pollution the production of electricity would have to be at least 40 times more efficient than my gas powered van. And it is nowhere near that.

Electric cars are a good idea IF 1) you want to spend more money. 2) Never drive more than a few miles from home. 3) Give up room, comfort, cargo space and range. 4) Own a car that you can't run the heater or air conditioner because they use electricity. 5) Can't drive at night because the head lights use electricity.

If you meet all these criteria then driving an electric car is a good idea. But if you meet all these criteria you really don't even need a car. You need a bicycle.

Oh yeah. Electric cars are a GREAT idea. If you are a moron with too much money. The rest of us will keep our gas powered cars.

.........Electric car....?

There is an all electric car that is being offered for sale to consumers in the US that is smaller than a Mini, what is the name of the car? How much does it cost? How fast does it go? What company makes it?

Answer
At this time, none of the major auto manufacturers are selling full electric highway-capable cars to the public.

There there is a company called ZAP (Zero Air Pollution) who sells a three-wheeled full-electric car called a Xebra that has a top speed of about 40 mph and a range of about 40 miles. List price is about $10,500. They are also working with Lotus on a vehicle called a ZAP-X which they say will have a top speed of 155 mph and a range of 350 miles. No word on the price point yet.

The Meyers Motors NmG (No more Gas) (formerly the Corbin Sparrow) is another three-wheeled electric car. It has a top speed of over 70 mph and a range of about 30 miles. It is available for $24,900.

There is another company called Commuter Cars who sell a full-electric two-seater called a Tango, the first of which was sold to actor George Clooney. It has a top speed of 150 mph and a range of 60-80 miles. They are not in full production yet. The model available now, the T600, costs $108,000. They plan to make the T200 available in 2008 for $40,000 and the T100 in 2009 for $19,000.

A company called AC Propulsion offers a conversion of a Scion xB to full electric. They call their offering the eBox. It has a top speed of 95 mph, and a range of 140-180 miles per charge, the conversion costs $55,000. Tom Hanks bought one of these recently.

Finally, Tesla Motors will offer the Tesla Roadster in 2008 for $92,000. (All of the 2007 models have been spoken for.) It has a top speed of 130 mph, range of 200 miles, and 0 to 60 in about 4 seconds.

What kind of car should I get?

ScorpioChi

So, my parents are getting me a car. With that being said, I do work and I will be paying the car payments including for gas and car mechanical failures. I am 16 and this is NOT my first car. Yes, my parents don't mind spending money, etc. on me obviously and I was just wondering from your opinion - what kind of car I should get or what do you think is better.

*NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT HOW YOU SAY RICH KID AND PARENTS WHO WILL DO ANYTHING FOR THEIR KID, ETC. THAT'S VERY RUDE!* (Yes, I said it in all caps haha!)

I was looking at these cars:
2012 Chevy Volt
2012 Hyundai Tucson
2012 Hyundai Sonata
2012 Cadillac SRX
2012 BMW X6M
2012 Porsche Cayenne
2012 Porsche Panamera
2011 BMW M3
2012 Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG
2012 Lexus IS F

MY OPINION:
I have close enough in money to afford a Porsche Panamera & Porsche Cayenne because I have been modeling and acting and I have been saving up with that money since I was 10 when I started. I still do modeling and acting but, little of it now since booking have been slow so I got myself a job at a local restaurant and at a lawyers office. I am home schooled so I have enough time to work, etc.

HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN:
For value and performance overall, especially for a car that I would like to keep for years from now, what car should I get?

I KNOW: You are going to say also, what is she doing driving a high performance, luxury or everyday car if she doesn't even know how to drive and she is just 16. In my state, the driving age is 14. I have never been involved in a car accident, never caused one and have never gotten any points taken off my license. I know how distracting it is to have friends in the car as my friend has died from that fatal accident but, I honestly don't drive with friends in the car. I only drive with family members in the car or on my own. No music. Just listening to that good old sound of car horns and the environment. (:

From your point of view, like I said, which is better? Please no negativity. Just answers. I know someone is going to put something negative on this post but, I did ask for an answer. I did not however ask for a mean one.

I hope you reply with what you think! Thanks! (:

*p.s. I know that I will have to go to driving school if I wanted to drive a high performance vehicle to know how to control the car, etc.* #JustSaying. (:
@mechanic_girl_C: Thanks for responding! (: I'll keep the Hyundai's in mind. ^_^
@iwastypingthat: Yes. No music seriously. (: Thanks for responding also! ^_^ I'll keep what you mentioned in mind about resale and safety with those cars.
@Raff: Thanks for responding! (: Ouch! That's off of my list for good. Haha yes, I do actually. ^_^
@apeweek: I've read through the information given on the volt and yes, it's reliable & very safe, etc. but I have come to the conclusion to just leave the volt off of my list. I did go down to test drive the Volt today and it's not really for me. It's safe, has the features but it also balls down to how much room is in the vehicle. It's great for someone who wants something small but I like to have a more space. (:
@GM Customer Svc: Thanks for the information on the SRX. (:

Answer
You should get a Chevy Volt. I'm sure this will make many readers scream, but hear me out. There is independent support for this position.
*
Consumers Reports has the Volt as one of their "recommended" cars. In fact the Volt is the ONLY recommended American car in the small car category. See link:
*
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/types/new-models-by-category.htm
*
The Volt in fact came in first place - beating every other car Consumer Reports tracks - in their Buyer Satisfaction survey. See link:
*
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-57334967-48/chevy-volt-scores-highest-satisfaction-rating-in-consumer-reports-survey/7
*
It also aced their first year reliability rankings. Note that Consumer Reports did not initially like the Volt - they trashed it in an article after the car first came out. But after testing it for a few months, they radically changed their opinion. This is the key - test drive one and see for yourself.
*
Volt got top 5-star scores in safety testing from both NHTSA and the Insurance Institute - see link (yes, recent "Volt fire" stories are sheer nonsense):
*
http://green.autoblog.com/2011/06/03/chevy-volt-earns-five-star-nhtsa-crash-rating-w-videos/
And
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/04/chevy-voly-nissan-leaf-crash-test-iihs-top-safety-pick/1
*
The Volt's little secret is that this is a wickedly fun-to-drive car, great acceleration, full of technological gadgets, and it attracts a lot of attention. Driving past gas stations is fun, too.
*
Plus - it's not even as expensive as most people assume. Depending on your driving pattern - and taking into account that electricity is much cheaper than gasoline - the total cost of ownership could even be cheaper than a comparable car. Below is a spreadsheet where you can input your own driving needs and see what kind of car is cheapest to drive:
*
http://www.squidoo.com/a-free-calculator-for-economy-hybrid-and-electric-cars
*
Yes, I own one. It's the best car I have ever owned. If you go with a Volt, be prepared for arguments with everybody. Do your research so you can answer your critics. This is a great car, the car of the future.

this spring my family is going camping without my mom...?

Rachel

this spring break my family of 6-1 (my mom is at college), so it'll just be:
dad, 47
sisters, 18+16 (16 year old's bday, turning 17)
brother, 11
me (girl), 13

we need to know a few things first though:
where to go
-nj
-not to far from 08054
what to bring

and we want to rent camper big enough and not to expensive!
thanks! :]

Answer
There are many state and private campgrounds in NJ. Many of these are closed during the Winter, but most open in March and April, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding something nearby. With a camper you might prefer a private campground so you can have electric and water hookups for your camper (not available at state campgrounds). Many private campgrounds rent campers and cabins, or you can lookup RV Dealers to see what's available to rent. State campgrounds don't rent campers but many do have cabins you can rent.

Because it will still be cold with a chance of snow you will not be fishing and probably not canoeing or kayaking (although that can be great fun even in winter, as long as you're properly experienced and prepared). That makes the excellent Cape May area campsites less attractive, because there's not much to do when its cold at the seashore. If it were me, I'd head to the Pine Barrens in and around Wharton State Forest (Hammonton/Chatsworth area). Atsion (on the lake) and Godfrey Bridge camping areas in Wharton State Forest are good if you don't mind carrying your own water and running off battery in the camper. Cabins are available at Atsion. There are also some more isolated camping sites further in the park that are accessible via unpaved sand roads. Wading Pines in Chatsworth is a good private campground in the area.

These sand roads go all over the Pine Barrens and many can be easily traveled by a family AWD/4WD SUV or Pick-Up. Many of these roads are also listed on Garmin and Lowrance GPS Navigation Systems (not TomTom, and I don't know about others). Driving the sand roads looking for ghost towns (now just bare spots next to the road), building ruins, wildlife, geocaches, and the Jersey Devil are popular activities. There are some tiny but nice beaches along some bends in the rivers and streams in the area that are good for a picnic (or a quick swim in warmer months).

If you are willing to go farther then NJ than I would head to Florida for the warm weather and beach, but you'll be competing with all the college kids and their ideas about Spring Break. I prefer the Western and Southwestern states myself: Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada; but these are too far for a one-week trip. You can also go to PA or upstate NY, but in the Spring I don't think they have more to offer than NJ.

Staying in a camper is a lot like staying in a vacation cabin or bungalow. Besides the normal stuff (clothes, soap, shampoo) you'll need to bring your own towels and flip-flops for the public bathrooms/showers, your own toilet paper, plus all your own plates, cups, napkins and utensils for eating. You might also need to bring your own pots, pans and cooking utensils. Of course you'll need food and drinks and condiments, but you'll also need dish soap, sponges, scrubbies and paper towels. Coolers for food and beverages and a small propane grill, and maybe 2-burner camp stove for cooking outside. Folding table and chairs to eat on if there's no picnic table. Lanterns and flashlights, too.

The camper (or cabin) will usually have some sort of heat (furnace in the camper, and furnace or fireplace in the cabin). You'll need to charge the battery every day or so (by hooking to the car and allowing to run until charged) to run the furnace and the lights in the camper if you don't have electrical hook-ups, and make sure you don't run out of propane. But that means you only need a normal sleeping bag (not a cold weather one) or a bedroll made of blankets for sleeping, plus your pillow (and teddy bear).

If campfires are allowed you'll need to bring your own wood, kindling and tinder (or make kindling/tinder on-site) for the fire. Don't forget hot dogs and marshmallows to roast over the fire.

Of course lots of trash bags because you have to keep a clean campsite, carry out all your trash (or place in dumpsters if provided), and put your dirty clothes in something.

For clothing you need clean underwear and socks for every day, but can wear the same pants and shirt for two or more days (hey, this is camping, not a luxury resort!). Also bring a sweater or sweatshirt and sweatpants in case it gets cold, and a warm jacket, hat and gloves. Thick socks and good hiking boots or shoes are recommended.

Binoculars, fishing pole and tackle, GPS for geocaching, camera, magnifying glass are good ideas. Each person should carry a full water bottle, brightly-colored bandanna, signal whistle, flashlight energy bar and a few other emergency items just in case something happens while out on the trail hiking or something.

That's the basics. I could go on for pages but I think you get the idea. Ask more questions if you think of them.

(BTW, I've stayed at dozens of KOA's across the country. Most are good, some are very good, but many are so-so and some downright awful. In any case, there are no KOA's in NJ.)

Electronic cars/quads for teens? lolol?

Michael

Ok, so me and some friends were wondering if they made those little kid cars( you know the electric powered ones?) or like the 4 wheelers or quads and they could hold 2 people and more than 200 pounds? We're 16, not fat mkaythxbai Anyway, any ideas? Something cheap?

Answer
There are some. but they don't really make much sense quite yet (hopefully they will improve this technology in the near future!). Basically they are way too small for other motorist to see you, they have a horrible range (like 50 miles before they run out of juice..), they're really rare and quite expensive (it would be hard to get one, basically).
Plus they only seat two people, as you know. and they're not very quick.
IF you want something fun. AERIAL ATOM :D they are insanely fast and can handle way better than cars, but really expensive. (oh, and they're street legal)

Why do people buy expensive, luxury cars when they can't even pay their bills?

Q. My friend had her phone and cable shut off because she didn't pay the bills. But she insisted on having a Lexus and puts that ridiculous payment first. What's up with people buying these expensive cars when they clearly can't afford it?

Answer
This is not anything new.
I remember when I was growing up that there were these folks with a lot of kids and one of the worst houses in town. But, every year they had a brand new Cadillac.

Take a ride to a not so nice section of a city. You are bound to see some really nice cars.

It's a status symbol. Some people choose to have a nice car over their necessities---rent, electric, gas etc..

Im a 13 year old boy and can't find a hobbies I enjoy please help.?

Jack L

As you know I'm 13 and I need a hobby. I like the outdoors but we live in a subdivision. I thought of doing woodcarving but its a little high in price. Can any of you please help me find something I like and is not too exspensive.
I don't want to do any school clubs or sports though.

Answer
When I was 13, I tried a variety of things. You could try sketching/drawing still life, painting miniatures, check in the trash or your local goodwill store for anything electric/electronic, and see if you can get them working again, or just to see how things work. Building model cars, or you could even check in your local hobby store and ask around as to what other kids of your age enjoy. I myself got into radio control off road racing, but that can get into the thousands of dollars, depending on the type of equipment you buy into. I tried woodcarving too, didn't think it was too expensive, but it wasn't my thing. I never got good at it. I used to carve duck figurines from scrap wood. need a dremel tool, and a couple carving blades, I believe Xacto makes a set. Hope some of these suggestions help. Good Luck to you.

electric cars?

lizzymcghe

hey everybody do u think its a good idea to have electric car?and how much do they cost? are they over twenty grand?do you still have to put gas in thoes cars?

Available in 2009, the cityZENN will have a 250 mile range and 80 mph top speed. The price has not yet been set.

Electric cars?

lew

I live in the uk, where there is a lot of talk about introducing new electric cars in place of petrol/diesel fueled cars.

I recently read about an electric Range rover and was wondering, do these electric cars offer less performance than petrol/diesel models?

Answer
there have been electric cars that could happily drive at 100mph if you so wished.
Performance has not been the problem, for getting an electric car into production in the past
The main problem was the Oil companies bought up the patents.... It was not in the interests of the Oil Companies to mass produce a car with no need of oil.
But times are changing. We will soon see cars on our roads, with no emissions, some form of car that self charges as you drive.
The technology already exists, dynamos on the axles, solar panels, storage cells are getting more and more efficient.
new super bright LEDs on all the lights will reduce battery drain. The car will be lighter, new alloys and carbon plastics can be as strong as steel.

Imagine an all electric car with lower running cost, lower insurance and tax, perhaps even lower parking costs.

So if you want to see the cars sooner, make the politicians work , All new cars could be electric in less than 10 years, less than 5 if we push the governments and companies to do it.

So whats next????
Electric powered Aircraft? and pollution free skies
Lets make it happen

If I were to eat an electric car in the UK would I be liable for road tax?

DAVID

I've bought a Kia electric car and it has stopped working. No one wants to buy it and the price to scrap it is too high. If I were to melt it down and then devour the automobile would I still be liable for road tax during the period of time it is in my digestive system. I have checked all government websites and there is a distinct lack of information on this matter.

Answer
Not likely, as the Kia electric car was just recently announced, and is not for sale yet.
*
However, you will be pleased to know that an Asian auto executive wanted to publicly demonstrate that his automotive batteries were environmentally harmless, so he drank battery electrolyte in front of a room full of reporters. He survived this fine, so you should be able to eat an EV and survive. Story below:

Christmas gift for 10 year old boy?

Ayla

I have no idea on what to get my nephew this season. His father has asked that we don't buy toy guns or military themed toys for him or his twin brother anymore, as he doesn't like how obsessed they've become with it.

Would a youth guitar make a good gift for a child who has no previous music experience? I plan on getting him a few instruction books to go along with it. How well do you think he'll like it? And for his brother, would a chess / checkers set be a good choice? The little runt's already beaten me twice at checkers.

Answer
I love that you are thinking of giving them a gift that could develop into a hobby. It depends though if they will like it. How dedicated are they?
Do they already have hobbies? maybe the parents can get him lesson to play.

When I was 11, one of the best gifts I received as a kid was an Electric gutiar, with an amp and OF COURSE, plug in headphones so I it would not be so loud.

It's kinda pricy though.
You can find deals on kits including a gutair, an amp, and the plugs.
for around $200 for a mexican made Fender with an amp inlcuded.
Don't forget the pick and some extra strings!
Get him Tablature of some rock songs to get him started.

Oh as for the little checkers king, why not try getting him one of those HUGE lego sets
I taught a class and the boys of that age
LOVED the lego set for
The Death Star (from star wars)
and the indiana jones temple of doom

Also, what about a model car kit that they have to paint???

What kind of scooter should I get, electric or gasoline?

Mira

I am 18 years old and like most high school age kids I took drivers education and went through learning to drive and stuff, but I was never very good at it and it's always made me very uncomfortable. I was terrified every time I got behind the wheel that I was going to do something wrong and wreck, so whether it was the right decision or not I just gave up and got a ride to wherever I needed to go. Now that both my boyfriend and myself have jobs however I am worried that at one point I'll need to go to work and won't be able to find a ride. As such, I am looking into getting a scooter for the commute to work. Driving in a car it takes maybe 10-15minutes to get to work, though I'm not sure how many miles away it is exactly. I want to know whether I should go with a gas or electric scooter, which brands that you might recommend (I'd really prefer to stay under $700 and I'm not against going with a used one, if I happened to find one), and how much would it cost me per month in gas and in electric, respectively? (Also, whether you agree or disagree with my decision not to drive a car is not in question. "Getting over" not wanting to drive is not a valid suggestion.)

Answer
Gasoline, first you can go farther, drive in rain but be careful, if it brakes anyone who knows at least basic stuff can usually fix and with electric you might forget to charge it and your screwed but with gasoline have a gas can for situations like this and your good for the day

Affordable electric cars?

Alan Clark

I wondered if there were any affordable electric cars out there in the market, or second hand ones.

I've tried looking but can't seem to find any. Do you reckon I'll have to wait a few years before I can find one second hand for a few grand?

Answer
I drive an electric car I found on eBay for just $2000. I invested another $4000 for batteries and repairs. Picture of it here:
*
http://evalbum.com/775
*
Aside from eBay, a good place to find used EVs is here:
*
http://www.evtradinpost.com/
*
An old electric car will probably have old battery technology. The bad news is that lead-acid batteries have to be replaced more often. The good news is that this type of battery has gotten much cheaper.
*
I replace the 17 golf-cart-style batteries in my car about every 20,000 miles. But it only costs me about $800 to swap them. The best price I've found (for 6V flooded deep-cycle golf cart batteries) is at Sam's Club.
*
$800 for 20,000 miles works out to about 4 cents per mile. The electricity to drive costs about 2 to 4 cents per mile (depending where you live.) So your total driving cost in an old EV is 6 to 8 cents per mile - much, much cheaper than gasoline.

who invented electric cars?

Kendal

What country invented electric cars and which country uses them the most?

Answer
Electric taxicabs were the first electric cars, built by the Electric Carriage and Wagon Company of Philadelphia starting in 1896, and used on the streets of New York to deal with the "horse pollution" of the day.
*
The country with the most electric vehicles presently is probably the United States. There are several thousand hobbyist electric cars on the road in the US, joined in 2011 by several thousand Nissan Leafs and Chevy Volts.
*
However, the lead in electric vehicles may not last long. China plans to invest over $15 billion in electric car infrastructure, and sales of the Leaf and Volt will target Europe in 2012, which is likely to be a prime market for electric vehicles - as gasoline is much more expensive in most countries outside of the US. Other electric vehicles in development at various car manufacturers have Europe and Asia as primary marketing targets.

Who thinks we need electric cars now?

Jimz

I think so cuz of global warming and the "Aptera" is the perfect car to drive, it goes 300 miles per charge for a hybrid, and goes 120 miles for all electric, the charging takes a couple of hours and doesn't cost alot to charge (a few dollars) the all electric cost about $26,000 the hybrid cost about $30,000. Think about you don have to buy gas anymore with the all electric you can learn more about this and reserve one now at http://www.aptera.com/ P.S there's also a video on youtube about this car

Answer
What your describing is far from perfect for a vast majority of people. I have 3 kids and a wife, only one of whom will fit in that thing. I don't have off-street parking available, so where do I plug it in? My workplace also does not have dozens of outlets in the parking lot, so same question. I live in Wisconsin, which gets pretty cold. Will the all electric model run at all when it's -10° outside? If I run out of juice halfway to where I'm going, I'll have to sit somewhere (with an outlet) for a "couple hours". Plus, the thing looks like a death trap. I'm not paying $26K for George Jetson's golf cart, no matter how much gas costs.
What I "need" is for our pansy politicians to quit pandering to the environmentalists and start drilling anywhere there's a trace of oil to be found under American soil. By the time all the oil dries up many decades from now, we'll have perfected hydrogen, fuel cells, fusion, or who knows what. It's not like all the oil will just suddenly vanish and the next day we'll be out of gas. Electric is nowhere near a perfect solution right now.

Do they make mini cars...?

Like mini cars for under 500 that kids can drive that go at least 20 MPH? Like for 10 year olds?

They make toy cars with electric motors that kids can drive. Haven't you ever seen the Barbie Corvette? They don't go anywhere near 20 mph. More like a brisk walking speed.

Is it legal to drive with your kid in a Baby Bjorn carrier?

reagan1861

I always wondered, and then I saw on some tabloid progam that the guy from Red Hot Chili Peppers was driving around with his kid strapped to him in a Baby Bjorn carrier. Is that OK? Since you would have the seatbelt on, technically the kid is belted, too. Or is it illegal? What if the airbag went off? Of course this guy was driving an electric car, so probably the max speed is like 10 MPH.

Answer
100% illegal. All children under the age of 18 must be seatbelted in their own seatbelt (can't share) and children under 4 years old and 40 lbs must be in a state approved carseat. Children under 1 year old and 20 lbs must be rearfacing in the carseat.

will me and my kids be able to survive on our own?

aunisty

my husband came home from work afew days ago and i had this strong urge to go out to his truck. so i went there and was looking around and i found a pair of womens underware! i panicked, came in the house, started screaming and told him he had to leave right away.

he said he would leave.

he was mostly the bread winner and made approx. $3200 a month. i work my butt off as a CNA and only make $1950 a month after taxes. we have 5 kids ranging from ages 2-13, a pregnant dog expecting 10 puppies in june, and 2 other dogs. and we have a cat and a pet rat.

keep in mind, my cousin babysits the 2 younger kids for only $50 a week while i work and my house is paid off so i only have these bills-

house taxes- 100 a month
house insurance- 50 a month
cable, internet, phone package- 115 a month
electric- 65 a month
car insurance- 85 a month
heat- (summer months) 50 a month
and water and sewer $50 a month
and daycare 200 a month
and my fancy table im paying 45 a month on

i usually take the kids bowling or roller skating too for $30-40 a week so $120 a month
and i spend about $110 on the animals a month

and i pack home lunches for school.

will we be able to survive without my husband, and how soon can i get child support and what do i have to do?

Answer
You have done really well to have put your family budget together so quickly. This is definitely the first thought to consider when parting ways with an ex. You work way too hard to put up with any crap from Mr. Wiggley.

On the other hand, your ex is still the kids father and should be treated as such. Get to a lawyer right away and get an emergency hearing for child support. Your husband will fight back, so it is important to prepare carefully and cooly.

What are your views on discipline?

Brat

Discipline is a rough subject, because everyone has different views. I am trying to get new ideas for my kids.

I believe every child has a discipline that works for them. I also believe that torture tactics are not discipline but are child abuse. I think that spanking is OK if you have control over yourself and don't take out all your aggression on your child. I also feel that spanking is more to get their attention rather than to hurt them. I am not going to say you are a bad parent if you spank. Again every child has a discipline that works for them.

What do you do for discipline in your house?
F Palmer that is child abuse. You can go to jail for that. I would find a better discipline technique if I were you before you lose your kids.

Answer
1. Don't try to discipline when you are angry. That's when it is time to hand the punishment over to your spouse before you loose your cool (or take your own time out to cool down first). There were may times my wife and I had to tag team to keep our cools. If a child can make you angry they have already won. If you are married, back each other 100% infront of the kids. If you have an issue with your spouse about a punishment go into another room, resolve it between the two of you and if needed let the parent that issued the punishment edit the punishment.

2. Don't give unlimited threats. Our kids knew that they had three warnings. The warnings were explicit "I've told you once", "I've told you twice, if you do that again this will happen", "Third time, punishment immedialy if at all possible". If one of us parents got to the number three the kids knew they were not going to like what happened. Both of the kids knew that up front from the time they were toddlers. This has the added benifit that the warnings and punishment are over before you loose your cool.

3. Be consistant if something is worth punishing for the first time its worth punishment the next 30 times. Then it is easy to as them the question "What happens when you throw you cars at the dog?" and they know "I can't play with the cars for 3 minutes". If they already knew the answer they didn't get three more warnings, only the one for that day. Be ready to go right back a refer to rule #2

4. We tried to make the punishment fit the crime. For example
Too loud in the house = "You can't use inside voice" = Go outside,
Banging a toy on the table/TV/dog = TOY goes into time out until it can play nice,
Screaming/hitting others =Time out 1 minute for each year of age. Any longer than that and they forgot why they were in time out. (Yes, we had to sit in time out with them at times) and it always started over when they left time out early. We didn't use a timer (until they were 7-9 yrs old) to reenforce that we the parents were in control of the situation and had not turned it over to an inatimate object.
Slamming a door in anger ment they were to "little" to have a door and the door to their room was taken off its hinges and they had to dress in the bathroom for a couple of days and for my daughter that ment she couldn't keep her little brother out of her room. (The last time I had to do that to her she was eight and she had a TEMPER at that age)

4 The only sure way they got a spanking was for out and out defiance. (My son earned more of these). He's still stubborn but now there are other things that can be used that have more impact than spanking a 14 yr old (i.e. no electric conviniences -- game system, ipod, cel phone or I can add extra chores (I save a list of those always on hand just in case. These chores are also a good to use in bartering with my kids for extra money/that game they just have to have))

5 Only fight a war with your kids if you have to, but if you do win and win decisively. Most things don't require war and a simple redirection will do.
Kids are to loud time to go outside.
Kids are whining time for a nap.
Kids to sleepy to get up in the morning kids go to bed 30 minutes earlier tonight. Yeah they don't like it and it's an inconvience to stop what you are doing to enfore it, but worth it. But there are times: my daughter decided (age 4) that she was not going to wear a seat belt and could play with the car door so she un-buckled her car seat while I was driving and would not stop. So after Dad spanked her and move her carseat away from the window, I told her that if she ever wanted a war to bring it on because if it was worth it I'd fight the war of the will and would alway win. After that incident any time she decided that she was about ready to push me (or my wife) to the limit. I could ask her if it was really worth going to war to have her way, she would sheepishly say no bite her lip and change her tune. The only reason this works is if you are willing to wage and win the war even if it would embarass you.

All this being said I have to hand it to any single parent that is or has raised a child by themselves. My hat is off to you.

Need help choosing a Breast pump?

Misti

I am 5 days away from having my 2nd baby boy and have been putting off choosing a breast pump. I breast feed with my first son and did try two different pumps but can not remember which ones but do remember hating both of them. I am lucky enough to be able to stay home with my kids so I do not need anything big and extravagant. Just one that I can pump enough for dad and big brother to be able to feed baby. I would like to have a manual and electric one. One for home and one for travel. Anyway I think that's it.

Thanks sooooo much for all your input!*!

Answer
I'd buy a Medela Swing Pump. It features the same two-phase expression technology as the Medela Pump-in-Style Advanced, but is much less expensive. The reason is that it only does one breast at a time. This would not work if you were pumping at work, because you'd have to take twice as long for your pumping break. Since you are just going to be using it at home, though, it'd probably be fine unless you are just in a hurry. I used it and liked it. It's especially nice in the car, because the pump is a little round unit and comes in a small pouch rather than a big shoulder bag. I was able to pump under a jacket, even riding in the front seat, without exposing myself to people passing us on the road. I actually think you could use the Swing for home and travel. The cost of the Swing is about $150.

If you really want another one, I'd go with the Medela Harmony Manual. It also has a version of the two-phase expression. Its reviews on Target are very good--better than several of the electric pumps! It costs about $35.

In general, I'd go for a Medela or Ameda pump. These are two companies that are wholly focused on helping women breastfeed. They put all of their energy into making the most efficient, comfortable pumps. I wouldn't buy a Playtex, for instance, because the breast pumps are just a little side business for them. They can afford to sell worthless pumps, and from what I've heard, they do. A high-quality pump is totally worth the money!

@mechanic_girl_C: Thanks for responding! (: I'll keep the Hyundai's in mind. ^_^

And

How much does it cost?

keh

To raise a child? From pregnancy to like 18 years old? What's a rough estimate for how much that costs? This is for a health class by the way. I'm only 15...nowhere near having kids.

Answer
Thousands and thousands of dollars! Here are just some examples, this is not everything by any means! And I am just estimating in cost by the way!

Food: $60/week (or more depending on age) * 52 weeks a year= $3,120 * 18 years= $56,160
Clothing: $200-2000/year (depending on age and size) * 18 years= $3,600-36,000
Shoes: $50/year (sometimes more) * 18 years= $900
Toiletries (toilet paper, body wash, shampoo, deodorant, etc) $50/month (depending on age and need, etc) * 12 per year= $600 * 18 years= $10,800
School supplies (not counting school fees because they differ per state and grade): $100/ year of school * 13 grade ( not counting re-takes, or preschool)= $1,300
Shelter expense (differes per family, but mine for instance): (rent is $560/month divided by 3 family members= $187) $187/month * 12 per year= $2,244 * 18 years= $40,392
Bills (split as the rent was in my case): (electric bill $120/month (all other utilities paid in my case) divided by 3 members= $40/month) $40/month * 12 per year= $480 * 18 years= 8,640
Car (if you buy them one, my parents did not): $2,000-$10,000
Gifts: (depending on age, spending limits, wants, needs, etc): $300( 200 for christmas and 100 for birthdays) per year * 18= $5,400

So just for that stuff, not counting everything else that is paid for for a child, and as I said those are estimations, very low for some, we come to a total of: $129,192 - 169,592 for one child from birth to age 18. Don't forget any medical bills, bills for the mother to have the baby, medications, etc!

i'm going to frontier city on saturday?

AC DC FTW

in Oklahoma and its been awhile seen i been their can anybody tell me if their are any new rides
its been about 3 years since i been their

Answer
Here is a list of Thrill and Family rides, and then they have The water rides and Kid rides (It's cold though so I don't know about the water rides)

Mindbender
A carriage filled with the brave catapults 50 feet high and flips head over heels towards the Earth before being scooped up and tossed in the air again. (Must be 48â or taller)

Eruption
Get vertical on the tallest thrill ride in Oklahoma! Erupt over 240 feet in the air before plummeting back to Earth. (Must be 52â or taller)

Silver Bullet
Itâs like being shot from a cannon as you rocket through this high speed steel looping coaster. (Must be 48â or taller)

Wildcat
Frontier Cityâs classic wooden coaster is a definite must-ride! (Must be 48â or taller)

Diamond Back
Speed down this steel track and race through a breathtaking loop. Then, look out! This ride strikes you back and you experience the whole thing again in reverse. Entrance inside Frontier Trading Company. (Must be 48â or taller)

Hangman
Hang tight on the Hangman as guests catapult almost 100 feet before plummeting back to Earth (Must be 48â or taller).

Rodeo Round-Up
High speed thriller that spins riders horizontally, then vertically. (Must be 48â or taller)

Steel Lasso
Let your feet dangle as you soar over the frontier on Oklahomaâs only suspended family coaster. (Must be 38â or taller)

Casino
Spin and tilt on this high-speed roulette style ride. (Must be 42â or taller)

Olâ 89er Express
Take a trip around the entire park in this two-carriage train ride. (Must be 42â or taller)

The Prairie Schooner
Swing back and forth and high into the air on this pirate ship that flies instead of sails. (Must be 48â or taller)
T
ornado
Hang on tight for this tilting spinning ride. (Must be 48â or taller)

Dodge âEms
Bumper cars for big kids and adults (Must be 48â or taller).

Tin Lizzyâs
Take a ride on these electric powered, mini antique cars. (Must be 48â or taller to drive)

Grand Centennial Ferris Wheel
A 20â gondola Ferris Wheel that gives riders a fantastic view of Frontier City. (Must be 42â or taller)

Quick Draw
Test your shooting skills as you take aim with an electronic gun and capture the sneaky bandits. (Must be 42â or taller)

Sidewinder
Hang on tight as this ride gets going. Youâll spin in tight circles as the entire ride twirls. (Must be 48â or taller)

Grand Carousel
Round and round you go on this nostalgic family ride. Our classic merry-go-round. (Must be 42â or taller)

I doubt it's changed much since you've been there though. I'm 23 and have lived in Oklahoma almost all my life and it hasn't changed much for 23 years.
They might be changing soon though because this summer I noticed they had a lot of pretty popular bands come through this year so they might have generated enough money off of that to make some changes

What intake should i buy?

jamesbriti

I have a 2005 Acura TSX and need help deciding if i should get a Ram supercharger kit from www.superchargerswarehouse.com or a Weapon-R Secret Weapon Intake from www.erzperformance.com

Answer
You're kidding right? An electric supercharger? That's incredibly dumb. Those don't work and frankly don't really equate to an intake (even though there's an intake included).

I have a secret weapon in my car, it's a short ram. Short rams are bad for engines that put out a lot of heat because they pull air from around the engine rather than the wheel well (cold air intake); you can compress more cold air than hot air in a combustion cycle. I suggest you get a cold air intake (k&n typhoon if they make them for your car).

I converted the short ram into actual bumper ram air and it works well.

Still if you have an automatic you'll have phantom gains (you'll swear you have more power but by dyno you won't). Besides, the tsx has a pig of a rich tune that won't be cured by intake alone.

Do you think the government should force manufacture of fuel effciant cars?

Nate H

They have electric roadsters that do 0-60 in 3 seconds and have a 100 mile plus range lineing up for production. Just add a small desile generator and some solar panels and it will get 100 to infinity miles per gallon. Why don't they mandate hybred and solor car manufacturing! Think they should make a limit on how much fuel a vehical can consume? Like 1 gallon per hour private and 3 commercial?

Answer
You can't mandate something like that.

The consumer dictates what will be built. The companies respond to that.

When gas got to $3.00 a gallon, SUV and pickup sales went down to its lowest levels since 1995. People were looking into more efficient cars. Toyota and Honda had already thought ahead and been producting them. The government encourages it by giving tax breaks and allowing them into HOV lanes. The US car makers were still churning out SUV's and fell behind yet again. Now Toyota is poised to become the number one car maker because they're able to think ahead, innovate, and respond quicker to the market.

Now that gas is back to $2.06 a gallon, people are going *whew* and are driving SUV's again. But there is a percentage that are thinking ahead and are selling their SUV's and buying the Toyota's and Honda's.

You can blame the SUV and Minivan market in part on the increased safety levels required by the government. Since they require car seats for each kid, a family with three kids needs a larger vehicle so Minivan's were born. Guys were harassed about driving a "minivan" so the car manufacturers created SUV's to satisfy a guy's ego.

Then you have the Hummer type ads. You've seen them. Where they harass the moms now, calling them wimps and pressuring them to buy Hummers. What a bunch of crap.

would it be rude to do this?

The Vanill

so i'm really interested in the chevrolet volt, and my dad said he would maybe buy me a new/very nice used car if my driving record was clean by the time im 18. i'm 16 now and still have a clean record so if it worked out he would maybe buy me one in 2 years. so anyway, i really like the volt, and i think it would be a good car for me to have because i can use the electric fuel to and from school and plug it in every night, and then switch to gas for longer trips. but i want to actually feel how it drives and see if i really like it. now i know that test driving a car if i have no intention of driving it is extremely rude because salesmen would be wasting time with me when they could be dealing with a customer who actually wants to buy something, but would it be rude if i took a test drive anyway? because assuming that my dad's deal with me is still in place when im 18 i would really like to have this car but like i said im not sure because ive never driven it or anything.

Answer
Irrelevant. You cannot test drive a car until you are 18.

And yes, don't waste my fu(king time. It IS rude little kid.

20 years in car sales/management/finance and I would laugh you off the showroom (as any other self-respecting sales person SHOULD do). Can't get a car for 2 years and you want to test drive one?!? Come on. Bull$h!t.
