In July of 2011, I purchased a used 1991 toyota 4-runner. While test driving, I asked what was the noise I ws hearing. The mechanic at the car lot said "It just needs PLUGS AND WIRES, The other sound was coming from a small HOLE in th muffler. The mechanic assured me of this. I had my brother with me. He and his kids and his girl friend. We all were, including my mother. My mother and I both are disabled. My mom has an electric wheelchair. Before signing the tital the OWNER and I discussed the problems that the mechanic described. I got in writing that he would add the trailor hitch and replace the plugs. At that time I was adviced that the repairs would be fixed. When I came to pick up my Toyota 4 runner it had 77k on it. I have had it garage kept, and now not even 1500 miles Now 78k. Two 1/2 weeks later I went there upset wanting my plugs and wires changed. And , also the Hitch still needed to be put on. Several days my truck had got a tune up, and a hitch; But,, the hitch still does not have the wiring harnest to have my mom's lift instailled. Help.. THE OWNER DOES NOT WANT POSITIVE FEED BACK! HELP!

Answer
Your only recourse is through small claims court.

You claim to have in your possession a note from him that he will add the trailer hitch and replace the plugs. That's what you have a claim to, nothing more. You can get an estimate from a dealer or repair shop as to how much that would cost in parts and labor, and sue him for that cost. Anything over that amount would be dismissed.

Anything IN WRITING can be enforced. Anything verbal will not be.

What kind of car should I get?

ScorpioChi

So, my parents are getting me a car. With that being said, I do work and I will be paying the car payments including for gas and car mechanical failures. I am 16 and this is NOT my first car. Yes, my parents don't mind spending money, etc. on me obviously and I was just wondering from your opinion - what kind of car I should get or what do you think is better.

*NO NEGATIVE COMMENTS ABOUT HOW YOU SAY RICH KID AND PARENTS WHO WILL DO ANYTHING FOR THEIR KID, ETC. THAT'S VERY RUDE!* (Yes, I said it in all caps haha!)

I was looking at these cars:
2012 Chevy Volt
2012 Hyundai Tucson
2012 Hyundai Sonata
2012 Cadillac SRX
2012 BMW X6M
2012 Porsche Cayenne
2012 Porsche Panamera
2011 BMW M3
2012 Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG
2012 Lexus IS F

MY OPINION:
I have close enough in money to afford a Porsche Panamera & Porsche Cayenne because I have been modeling and acting and I have been saving up with that money since I was 10 when I started. I still do modeling and acting but, little of it now since booking have been slow so I got myself a job at a local restaurant and at a lawyers office. I am home schooled so I have enough time to work, etc.

HERE'S WHERE YOU COME IN:
For value and performance overall, especially for a car that I would like to keep for years from now, what car should I get?

I KNOW: You are going to say also, what is she doing driving a high performance, luxury or everyday car if she doesn't even know how to drive and she is just 16. In my state, the driving age is 14. I have never been involved in a car accident, never caused one and have never gotten any points taken off my license. I know how distracting it is to have friends in the car as my friend has died from that fatal accident but, I honestly don't drive with friends in the car. I only drive with family members in the car or on my own. No music. Just listening to that good old sound of car horns and the environment. (:

From your point of view, like I said, which is better? Please no negativity. Just answers. I know someone is going to put something negative on this post but, I did ask for an answer. I did not however ask for a mean one.

I hope you reply with what you think! Thanks! (:

*p.s. I know that I will have to go to driving school if I wanted to drive a high performance vehicle to know how to control the car, etc.* #JustSaying. (:
@mechanic_girl_C: Thanks for responding! (: I'll keep the Hyundai's in mind. ^_^
@iwastypingthat: Yes. No music seriously. (: Thanks for responding also! ^_^ I'll keep what you mentioned in mind about resale and safety with those cars.
@Raff: Thanks for responding! (: Ouch! That's off of my list for good. Haha yes, I do actually. ^_^
@apeweek: I've read through the information given on the volt and yes, it's reliable & very safe, etc. but I have come to the conclusion to just leave the volt off of my list. I did go down to test drive the Volt today and it's not really for me. It's safe, has the features but it also balls down to how much room is in the vehicle. It's great for someone who wants something small but I like to have a more space. (:
@GM Customer Svc: Thanks for the information on the SRX. (:

Answer
You should get a Chevy Volt. I'm sure this will make many readers scream, but hear me out. There is independent support for this position.
*
Consumers Reports has the Volt as one of their "recommended" cars. In fact the Volt is the ONLY recommended American car in the small car category. See link:
*
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/types/new-models-by-category.htm
*
The Volt in fact came in first place - beating every other car Consumer Reports tracks - in their Buyer Satisfaction survey. See link:
*
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13746_7-57334967-48/chevy-volt-scores-highest-satisfaction-rating-in-consumer-reports-survey/7
*
It also aced their first year reliability rankings. Note that Consumer Reports did not initially like the Volt - they trashed it in an article after the car first came out. But after testing it for a few months, they radically changed their opinion. This is the key - test drive one and see for yourself.
*
Volt got top 5-star scores in safety testing from both NHTSA and the Insurance Institute - see link (yes, recent "Volt fire" stories are sheer nonsense):

And
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/04/chevy-voly-nissan-leaf-crash-test-iihs-top-safety-pick/1
*
The Volt's little secret is that this is a wickedly fun-to-drive car, great acceleration, full of technological gadgets, and it attracts a lot of attention. Driving past gas stations is fun, too.
*
Plus - it's not even as expensive as most people assume. Depending on your driving pattern - and taking into account that electricity is much cheaper than gasoline - the total cost of ownership could even be cheaper than a comparable car. Below is a spreadsheet where you can input your own driving needs and see what kind of car is cheapest to drive:
*
http://www.squidoo.com/a-free-calculator-for-economy-hybrid-and-electric-cars
*
Yes, I own one. It's the best car I have ever owned. If you go with a Volt, be prepared for arguments with everybody. Do your research so you can answer your critics. This is a great car, the car of the future.

Q. ..and which one is better? Is there any difference in hydrid cars? I'm thinking about the Toyota hybrid...

Answer
Snob appeal. Just kidding. My sister has owned a Prius for the last 2 years. She bought it "new" and I've heard not one complaint. Go with Toyota because they are one of the first to have perfected a Hybrid priced for the masses (more or less..I'll have to buy 2nd hand) This old world is suffering from pollution, so any little thing can be a positive. I've seen some really innovative electric cars on-line, but have never seen any for sale and one the road. Then electricity rates will climb! Mark my words.

How can you get into a home without any money down, bad credit and substancial debt?

chelsy132

I have been in and out of the hospital and am unable to work , my husband makes over $55,000 a year but we are a family of 5 crammed into a 2 bedroom apt. He has student loans and bad credit from divorce. He had a home from his previous marriage, but I have never been a home owner. The question is how can we get out of this hole we are in and start moving on with our life? Iwant to try to be in a home b4 my 3 yr old son starts school.. because the schools where I currently live are unsatisfactory. we currently pay $650 a month in rent .. which is more than most of my friends house payments so I am wondering how do I get started trying to improve our situation and get into a home .. with $1,000 in debt each month and no way to possibly save for a down payment of any kind. We have paid our rent every month, that is one thing we do make sure gets paid . have been in and out of the hospital and am unable to work , though we have not asked or have been receiving any assistance what so ever. My conditions include spinal bone growths, organ failure and chronic pain , which makes it difficult to just care for my son and my 2 step sons (which are all under the age of 12), Since my doctors have told me I am physically unable to work right now options for going back to work are not really there. My husband works 12 hour days at his job, that he has held for over 7 years. We have 1 car( that is paid off). Our rent of $650 a month that we do pay does not include our utlities or anything else. Our phone bills, electric, cable, water all get paid as well and we have a good payment history with them as well. Our credit debt includes :my husbands government student loans, credit cards from his previous marriage, and one month of car insurance not paid by me after I went into the hospital.
we are looking for a home in the $50-$100k price range .. so that we can make our payments.

Answer
Try going to a new home builder. Like getting a new car, a new home will probably be easier to get into than a used home. My wife are only 24 years old and also have bad credit (560 for me 580 for her) and debt ($3k owed to an apt. complex for broken lease among other things). Combined we only make about $40-45k a year which is less than your husband. The home builder that we were with couldn't get us financed in house with them but because they wanted our business our loan officer referred us to another company that got us approved. This company was actually able to use my wife's credit with my income level but this might have worked well for use because we work in the same company. To be honest with you your financial situation seems to balance out with ours because we have not kids but we do pay for a $450/mo. car note and our mortgage is $950/mo. as opposed to the $650 you say that your friends are paying for mortgage. The only thing you must be aware of is property taxes. Property taxes range in different areas but they may be anywhere from $2,000-$6,000 or more per year depending on where you live. Your lien holder can include this into your note as a monthly payment and many times will depending on your type of loan (conventional, fha, 80/20, etc.). Our taxes for our area are about $4,500 a year which puts us at about an additional $400/mo. bringing our total monthly payment to around $1350.

If you think that getting a used house might be cheaper, do your research. We were able to buy our house for $130k which is about the price that the used homes were selling for. It only made sense to get a brand new house that cost as much as a used house. The figures however will still run the same with the same taxes and same interest rate only you might have a tougher time getting a loan because there is no one pushing to get your business except for the loan officer and/or real estate agent who can only do so much for you. New home builders have many contacts that make buying a house a possibility for anyone.

Is there financial help out there for a recently divorced, working mother of three?

Q. I live in Kentucky, I'm still waiting to finalize my divorce, trying to get my share of the assets, and in the middle of trying to get full custody. I work a full time job and receive child support, this is still not enough to support me and my three girls. I am having to rely on the support of another guy whom I do not love and is borderline abusive and I would love to get away from him but I can not afford to do it on my own.

Answer
Yes there is..It's called wellfare help..sounds awful i know..but this is about supporting your 3 kids till things get better in your life..and it will..it's just going to take some time...trust me the wellfare office understands the struggles of single parents and by u going down there to apply for the things that u are having trouble to make ends with...they will help u...so long as u are 100 percent honest with them...Number one..if u don't have medical insurance to cover the kids...u will get it right away..since u are a family of 4.(not including this guy)and u make 40 thousand or less u can get it..including foodstamps..(just untill things get better).U can also apply for public housing..sure that sounds awful..but there are alot of places that are decent as hell and u wouldn't ever know that the landlord allows section 8 people.(section 8 means the landlord gets there rent period no questions ask cause the state pays him u pay him just a little maybe only 100 to 200 a month only set back is u are on a waiting list..but it goes quick in the spring time..u can also get help with heat the list is endless..all u need to show them is all the kids Social security numbers, yours as well..proof of paycheckstub from your job and copys of all your bills that u pay.like car insurance gas bill electric bill ect ect..u will be flabbergasted on all the areas that the wellfare dept can help u with...Remember this is your tax money that is helping u so why not make it work for your kids
there is also a place called the YWCA not YMCA(thats for men)they help with apartments furniture childcare ect ect..i know u ask for financial help here..instead of getting a check to cover your bills..all that i mention above they personaly pay your bills for u..if u ever want to talk more to me please feel free to contact me through my name...Good luck sweety u can do it..and get rid of the abusive so called boyfriend u don't need this right now..u and your kids come first and nothing else..PERIOD

Do remember how boats got across the ocean? Have you ever held your

because they believe you are all ignorant and set in your ways. They

car that had electric generators that produced electricity via wind
power, Human power "recumbent bike pedals", Solar power and maybe some
lithium batteries you would have a car that would go thousands of
miles without ever needing to be charged or fueled.
But will this ever be allowed. Its amazing that china and japan have
magnetic trains that never touch the track they actually float be we
never use that technology. Its no wonder they do not put any emphasis
on science. They want us to remain ignorant and in the dark. They want
you to keep forking all the billions of dollars in tax revenue. They
want the price of fuel to sky rocket because most of them own the

own hands and break the grip of Fuel mongrels from ourselves by building
our own fuel free cars. I just showed you the way. Now all you have
to do is " Just Do It!"
My method overcomes the perpetual energy law crap because you get extra energy, Via Human power and solar power! The sun is the source of unlimited free power and so what if you have to pedal your car for it to go long distances. I just saved you from getting fat as hell.

Why do some women have kids just to dump them in daycare?

They ca

Now that I have your attention, I have a legit question. Why do people have children just to dump the child off in school once they turn 5 years old? We have these people making judgements about daycare, yet isn't school the same thing? Kids are in school for about the same amount of time. Just think we they get older and are involved in sports/band/choir/etc. How terrible that these children can't spend every second of everyday with their parents.
(note the sarcasm)
Kimberly, see where Isaid note the sarcasm?//I posted this because Ise daycae-bashing question every day. MY ids aren't in daycare but I know parents who have to put their kids in daycare. I've seen people say on here "Oh, those poor childrne have to be away from mommy 8 hours out of the day." Now remind me how many hours a child is in school? Isn't it 7 or 8. Then when they start with sports and then an after school job when they turn 15 or 16, that's even less time with mommy and daddy. Why don't these same people complain about this even though not sending your kid to school is illegal?

Answer
Like Ellie said, thank goodness you were being sarcastic, cause I was very tempted to give you a tongue lashing too! :)

I don't understand why either group, (the SAHM's or the working moms), feel it necessary to insult and put down others for the choice they have made. The comment that people have made, "Why have kids if you are going to have daycares raise the?" is just really rediculous! So basically, without just outright saying it, these people are saying that unless someone is financially able to stay at home with their children and not use a daycare or a private babysitter, then they don't deserve to be a parent. That is very judgemental and just plain hateful. Not every woman has the luxery of falling in love and marrying a man who makes $35-60,000 a year. I married one who only makes about $25,000 and brings home alot less after he pays child support on his children from his ex-wife and insurance premiums on all the kids. I don't think the fact that I didn't marry someone who made alot of money, means that I dont deserve to have children.

What about a woman who is widowed? My best friend was widowed with 2 young children, and had no choice but to work to support her kids. So I guess according to some of these women, she didn't deserve to have the kids, because she ended up having to put them in daycare. Point is, no woman, even these ones that are so freely judgeing working moms, know how their life will turn out and what might happen to them.

I don't know any woman who enjoys dropping her kids off at a daycare in the mornings, I certainly don't. But my husband and I live in an older house, and have had alot of things break, like our hot water heater, pipes, leaking roof. We have not had the money to repair these things outright, so we have had to charge them on a credit card. The motor on my car blew up and it cost over $2,000 to fix it, so again that went on the credit card. I was a SAHM for 18 months, and any unexpected large expense that came up, went on that cerdit card. So, I will be trying to pay all that off for years now. But it was either do that, or go without hot water, or no water, or have no vehicle. Which would have ended up hurting my kids more than me. So I did go back to work, and I do have to take my daughter to a babysitter during the day.

I do not live an extravagant life. I don't go shopping every month, I don't have a Coach purse, we don't have 4 wheelers or motor bikes, we don't go on vacations, we don't eat out every week, I don't buy new clothes for myself on even a monthly basis. If I have an extra money, from working over time or getting a bonus at work, I spend it on my husband or kids, not on myself. I took some extra money I had about 4 years ago, and bought my husband one of those $65.00 do-it-yourself outdoor pond kits, and some cheap 25 cent goldfish to go in it, and helped him make it, for fathers day, and I have had women on here tell me that was an expensive, frivolus expense and that is probably the reason I have to work, cause I am wasting money. I never knew buying my husband a fathers day gift would be considered "wasting money"!

If a mom chooses to work, because she does not want to stay at home at her childrens expense, then I don't think that makes her selfish at all. In fact I think it makes her a loving, wonderful mom. If choosing to stay at home, means that you and your husband have to stretch and skrimp so much with his paycheck, that you find yourself telling your kids "No, you can't have that, we can't afford it." or not taking them out to eat or to the movies occasionally (cause you have to pay the electric bill), not being able to buy them new clothes or toys occasionally (and I don't mean the cheap $2.00 toys at the Dollar Store that fall apart within 3 days) or you just simply have no extra money for "extras", then I do think that the mom staying at home ends up affecting the kids in a not so good way. Sure, they have mommy at home with them all the time, but if they never get the "little extras" that I know most kids would like to have and enjoy, then I think to alot of kids that is not worth it. I have seen stay at home moms, who have to skrimp and save so much that they can't even buy their kid Christmas presents or a Halloween costume. So, how is that fair to the kid?

I realize that not all daycares are great, but their are alot of women who do daycare out of their home. I found a wonderful older lady who watches kids out of her home. She is very inexpensive compaired to daycares, and my daughter learns alot from this woman. At only 2 she was talking as good as a 3 year old, was counting to 20 and could say spanish numbers too. This woman treats my daughter like she is her grandchild, and I never have to worry that she isn't getting wonderful care while I am at work. I don't go out with the girls after work or go shopping when I get off. I immediatly go get my daughter from this woman. I spend every single waking minute away from work with my kids. I do not go out, nor do I ever leave them with a sitter other than the hours I am at work. So I try to make the most of the time I am home with them.

You made a great comparrison, regardless of what others have told you. The moms who think it is better to be a stay at home mom when their kids are young, and who want to judg

I... don't know anything about trucks or cars except how to maintain them and how to drive them. If I were to look for a truck to pull a trailer (probably a small stock or two horse), what would I need as far as specifications are concerned?

Can an '04 Chevy Suburban pull a two horse or would I need something with more power? It would not be a frequent occurrence. Honestly I'm not sure if it's worth buying a trailer if it's just going to be sitting there...

Answer
Suburbans have plenty of power to pull a horse trailer. Besides having enough power, they also have a long enough wheelbase for safety. I think the recommended minimum is 114 inches. When I was a kid, back in the '80's our first horse trailer towing vehicle was a suburban which also towed our camping trailer. Back then, it wasn't uncommon to see people towing with those big V-8 station wagons. You never see that anymore.

You will need to make sure the Suburban (or truck) has a frame mounted hitch (not just a towing ball mounted in the bumper). You'll also need trailer wiring and a plug. It might have come new with the hitch and wiring, a lot do these days. You'll need an electric brake controller, which mounts where you can reach it while driving. The brand new Chevy's come with integrated brake controllers, but I doubt they did that in '04 (I know for sure they didn't in '03).

Which of these two traxxas car types should I get?

John

I'm getting an XL-5 and a VXL. I am great at driving short course trucks, and I'm sorta good with buggies. What XL-5 should I get? What VXL should I get?

Answer
XL-5 is an ESC, and VXL is their line of electric vehicles.

Based on the repair parts I used to sell when I worked behind the counter, I'd recommend the Stampede.

But who are you trying to kid? Nobody owns just one of these things.

I'm a guy, I'm 16, I love sports and video games, I have a car, yet I'm stumped on what to ask for Christmas. My parents don't like spending a lot of money on things so I need ideas no matter how stupid they are. Please help.

Answer
16 eh? I can't remember what I wanted for Christmas then. But I'd go for the following:

-An ipod (could be the small ones, then get a aux cord for your car and bam! all your music in one spot)
-An electric shaver (I got one, but have yet to use it, I'm kinda afraid to)
-New video game? (L4D2-xbox360, the new mario game-wii, Modern Warfare 2-ps3, just my personal favorite)
-Frolfing stuff! (If you like golf, its pretty much that. Except you throw frisbees for to the hole. Sounds kinda dumb but it's actually pretty sweet)

Those are a couple of things I'd want, I think. I dunno I was 16 5 years ago so I'm not sure what's cool with the cool kids now.

What music do you listen to while you ski/board?

Muzie

I like all music. When i want to ski just for recreation and not sport, i listen to music, but nothing seems work. What do you listen to?

Answer
I'm a freeskier, and have a few playlists i like to ski to.. I also like to have music while i am warming up or doing off-snow training... Usually I have to wake up super early in the morning to get ready, ect., so i like to have good songs on hand. here are a few ideas, of not so much music to ski to (although they could be used for that), but a bit more 'pump-up' music:

Good Pump-Up Songs- for earlier in the morning/later in the evening when you are just getting ready, in the car, after a long day ect.:
-Dead End Street by the Kinks
-Remember the Name by Fort Minor
-Friends by Whodni
-Outro by M83
-Waka Waka by Shakira
-ANY MUSIC BY XAVIER RUDD!!
-ANY MUSIC BY BOB MARLEY!
-BON IVER music!!
-Magic Show by Electric Owls
-Don't Bring Me Down by ELO
-Dubstep Pumped Up Kicks (yeah, i know its overplayed, but... lol)
-Michael Jordan Theme
-Summertime by New Kids on the Block

Good Pump Up Songs:
-Lose Your Glamor by Whole Z
-LUV by Janet Jackson
-Footloose
-Sandstorm by Darude
-I'mma Shine by YoungBloodZ
-Danza Kuduro by Don Omar

Thats just a couple i could think of off the top of my head, but hope they come in handy!!
Have Fun SKIING!! :)

Can I put a 12v car battery in a kids electric jeep?

I was recently given two electric ride on toys for kids. Both a beat up pretty bad but the motors work, batteries don't. The factory batteries are expensive sooooo.... I was wondering if a car/atv/motorcycle/ battery would work? The originals were 12v. I do know there is a safety issue as far as liquid acid from gel acid but I have a container solution for that. I'm more curious about it exploding, lighting on fire or another unforeseen issue. Any thoughts before I try it? Don't answer if you are going to say " don't ever use anything but factory approved blah blah blah.." These are junk and the " you cant do that " crowd does not interest me unless it is backed up by scientific fact. Kids will not be driving these either. Any other junk yard tinkerers out there with some sage words of advice?
12v all the way, not Power Wheels plus the batteries are clearly labeled. Gotta say I love the actual experience with the John deer. Like it was brought up do u know if he had a problem with the battery lasting over multiple charges?

Answer
Yes it will work for sure. My father inlaw has a john deere toy tractor for his nieces that runs on a car battery. That thing runs for ever too instead of the 15-20 minutes the factory battery is good for. Just every once in a while you will have to hook it up to a car battery charger. They can be expensive, hope you have one. The kids will love you for it. Lol. Good luck.

Electric Shock on Car?

Grampa Han

Hi! My car was vandalized again last night by my neighbors. Although I don't have evidence but I know it's them. Just the same, they first made deep scratches on my car, then, a few weeks later, maybe kicked the plastic cover of my plate number causing it to crack big time, then just a couple of weeks ago, punched a concrete nail on the wheel, and last night, made two very deep and long scratches on my doors. Its irritating but we can't do anything as we don't have any garage in the place we're renting at. And relocating is definitely out of the question and the budget. Security alarm has already been installed but it doesn't help much. When I was a kid, I touched a jeep my uncle was repairing and got zapped a little.

Question, is there such a way to do this on my car wherein the "zapper" gets activated when I set my alarm on? If you could point me to a DIY site to do this or any suggestions to do this will be highly appreciated.
Thank you! I think installing that camera might work long term. Could you point me to a website that has it or, what do you call that kind of camera? Thanks!

Answer
You could rig up a transformer to go from120v ac to 12v dc and run wires out to your car. If properly connected, anyone that touches metal on your car gets zapped. The video camera option is better though. If the person(s) are caught, you can take them to court and force them to pay for the repairs.

what happens when you run out of gas in the Toyota Camry Hybrid?

bayebd24

So I've always ran outta gas in my cars to see how far they go, but I have kids now and do not want to push it. Does the electric motor turn on when you run out of gas in the Toyota Camry Hyrbid?

Answer
There are two electric motors in a Camry Hybrid, a torque and a counter torque motor. That's because the gas engine, and the two motors are directly connected to the same planetary gear that drives the wheels there are no gears in the traditional sense of transmissions and no shifting of gears. The proportion of which motor is delivering power to the wheels and by what gear ratio is controlled by the respective motors. That means pretty much all of them need to be working or locked (braked) into position for power to go to the wheels. Even when the gas engine is running, the electric motors have to hold their end of the planetary gear from turning or the power doesn't get to the wheels likewise the gas engine has to provide some resistance for the power to go from the electric motors to the wheels, how much the electric motors hold their end with respect to each other controls the gear ratio and the power regeneration, depending on the gear ratio, the gas engine may actually be turning one electric motor to generate electricity so that the other electric motor can run faster so that the gas engine doesn't need to run faster. It's by varying the controls on the two electric motors and the gas engine that they control the effective gear ratios of the Synergy transmission. When the car is running on electricity only, the gas engine is locked down to provide the resistance. It's really a very clever design that GM is planning on copying.

If the control system is smart enough to lock down the gas engine when it's out of gas then the two electric motors could still move the car but if not, they would be cranking the gas engine which is actually how the gas engine gets started. I would suggest that you ask Toyota what happens when you run out of gas or just make sure you have a jerry can of gas with you when you try.

There is a book called electricity for fuel that sells for like $70 bucks online and they claim that it will show you an easy way to convert any car to electric on a $600 budget. Sounds like BS to me. Anybody know anything about this?

Answer
Sure but not for 600. Batteries are not that bad if you import like I did. 20 sets of li-ions with shipping from china for 7000 that's 350 a set. so far I built 2 getting ready to built 2 more for the kids as soon as they realize you can't convert a hummer 2, weight is an issue with EV's.
try here the have everything you need plus books and video's for a reasonable price.
http://www.electroauto.com/index.html
I have 2 I built myself, 1 is an 87 Omni the wife's grocery getter, It's a single speed with a top end about 70mph but most efficient at 35. Mine is an 86 Fiero, I built it as a performance car, it has twin Solectra AC55 motors and controllers each run through 5 speed Getrag transaxils. The rear is the Fiero's the front however came from a Cavalier RS. The Fiero does the 1/4 mile in 9.9 seconds about 6 times on a full charge. And I could probably get that down to low 9's or even upper 8's when I change the training gears and adjust ratio's.

both of these cars are good weather only, spring summer and fall. there is no longer a heater or ac. still has wipers for rain but that's all. Rack and pinion - power stearing was stripped down and rebuilt to manual now. no power anything. they both where around 2600# when I started and after stripping them down, some welding for battery cradles and building back up as an EV there now around 2100# which is still a little heavy for an EV to have good range. I know for a fact the omni can go 103 miles on a charge and still had some left over.

How much better are electric cars?

Cody

How much better are electric cars For the environment? What advantages do they do for it?

Answer
If the entire US fleet of vehicles were electric they would require at most 30% of the electricity we presently use. However about 86% of those vehicles could be charged at night (off peak) with no additional generating equipment because we have at least that much excess capacity at night.

At the same time we would be saving about 6 kWh to 8kWh of energy (electricity and some other fuel sources) used to refine oil into each gallon of gasoline. The average electric car can go further on this much energy than the average petrol vehicle can go using the refined product.

We could easily run US vehicles on existing energy sources without the pollution of Oil.

And it is not just air pollution. Many will recall the months that it took to cap the BP oil well in the Gulf. Slightly more than 200 million gallons spilled in the worst ever ecological disaster? No Every year more than 200 million gallons of lubricating oil is drained from cars and improperly disposed of in the environment. Every Year. Petrol cars pollute more than just the air. Electric cars don't use lubricating fluids that need to be drained. http://www.epa.gov/osw/conserve/materials/usedoil/oil.htm

Are you worried about US economic health? The trade deficit attributed to imported oil was 327 billion dollars in 2011. This is approximately equal to the trade deficit with China. To balance the books we need to stop importing oil. Electricity is primarily a domestic product.

The EPA has this to say about a petrol powered car: "Only about 14%â26% of the energy from the fuel you put in your tank gets used to move your car down the road." http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/atv.shtml Tesla measured their roadster at approximately 92% efficiency from battery to wheels. http://www.efficient-mileage.com/tesla-roadster.html

When we look at a petrol vehicle we necessarily must look at the vehicle plus pollution from transporting the fuel and refining it (although few do) because where else are you going to get gasoline. It doesn't fall from the sky. Those who attribute power plant pollution to electric vehicles assume that there are no other options than the electric grid to power the vehicle. They assume it is not possible to get electricity from your roof, or the wind. The electric car will never be as closely tied to a specific source of its fuel like the petrol vehicle.

Over time electric vehicles will change. Someday power may be transmitted to them leaving no battery pack to charge. At that time the vehicles will have unlimited range with no recharging times: http://spectrum.ieee.org/green-tech/advanced-cars/the-allelectric-car-you-never-plug-in

I dont know anything about the difference between nitro rcs and regular... I was looking for a site that could explain the differences and what i would need when purchasing one. I looked at a site that showed the different rcs and one of them had nitro rcs and then another had nitro rcs packaged deals, whats the difference. THank you, I hope I wasn't too confusing.

Danny

Answer
Basically there are 3 types of hobby spec RC cars; electric, nitro and petrol.
Don't think the electric ones are the toy ones people get at Christmas when they're kids, they're not. Nitro RC cars are the ones with the little screaming engines, that only run on special fuel and not petrol. Then there are petrol powered RC cars which are huge and hugely expensive.

Different sites will sell batteries and fuel with the cars, called a package deal, others just sell the cars and you have to buy the fuel and batteries separately.

If you have Adobe Acrobat Reader, take a look at this...

What are some good foods to bring for a long road trip?

Q. My kids and I are moving permanently to San Diego from Alaska and driving the whole way as non-stop as possible. I just want to know what are some good foods to bring or cook and bring for the move to San Diego because I don't want to spend too much money at restaurants. Do you have any suggestions or recipes? My four kids are all teenagers.

Answer
Your getting great ideas here, let me add one.
We refer to some types of food as JAW food, just add water. And they include everything from instant soups and oatmeal, cous cous, hot drinks, cup 'o' noodles. gather up all your JAW food, usually it doesn't need refridgeration and won't go bad. then invest in one of those super fast teapot water heaters that plug into your car lighter. or you could splurge and get an inverter for your car and then you could run electric applicances off your car battery (yup, like a coffee pot, hot plate and laptop) they aren't too expenisve and being able to use electric applicaes on a long trip can be great!

Some of my other favorites are jiffy pop on a campfire. I carry V8 in cans cause I know I don;t tend to eat enough veggies on a road trip. Drinks like ensure can help a lot and again don;t have to be refidgerated, but you'll want at least one cooler with ice to chill them before you drink. Dry meat, salmon strips and crachers are filling. And although its not 'real' cheese it travels great, velveta. Nuts and trail mix are filling and take up less space then bags of chips. Also scam a supply of little ketchup, mayo, mustard, soy sauce, whatever condimnets you use from restruants before you go, they travel better then the big full jars.

Also for cheap eats, roadside farmers markets and food stall can be great finds. Avoid gas stations, they are over priced and carry junk. And with a little time online you might be able to find fairs and festivals along your way, they would make a nice rest stop and usally have all kinds of interesting, cheaper the restaraunt foods. And in a pinch you can always eat for free on Sundays at any Hari Krishna temple.

What will they teach our kids in the future?

SV650s

In my history class, I've learned about Caveman, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Roman, Renaissance, Industrial Revolutionary, WWI, WWII, etc. I was just wondering, about a hundreds or thousands of years from now. What do you think our kids will learn about? Petroleum? Internet? Etc?

Answer
Great question. Very thoughtful.
This era will be known as the "computer revolution."
It has changed everything in world society just as the industrial revolution did in the 1800's.
It will be known as the communication era - the time when world cultures began to merge through common communication via the internet as you have already surmised.
It will be known as a time when the world moved towards a common language - or perhaps focused down to three or four languages such as English, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, and Spanish. [The French will always speak French, but they will know a second language as well.]
Thousands of years from now there will be one common world language, but for this century the history will show that several languages emerged from the hundreds of world languages formerly spoken and written.

This will also be known as a time of growing global consciousness regarding the environment - else we will not be around a thousand years from now to write histories.
It will be known as the century of planned population control - or again, the future will be bleak.

A hundred years from now the War in Iraq will seem a small thing - a limited skirmish hardly worth a footnote. The loss of US troops over five years does not amount to a single large battle of the American Civil War. Although the loss of each individual serviceman or woman in Iraq over the recent five years matters a great deal to us now, in the USA we lose ten times more people every year to car accidents. When historians look back, Iraq will seem a small incident.

This will also be the century that people switched form gasoline powered vehicles to electric modes of transport or possibly hydrogen powered vehicles. The Middle East only started pumping out oil a little over 100 years ago. In the next 100 years, that resource will be gone.

Food will always be an essential, the USA will be crucial for world supply.

One other thought - chemotherapy as we use it now for malignant diseases - will be considered medieval and as barbaric as bloodletting looking back 100 years from now.
Older people will still die with cancer, but people must die of something to make room for younger generations. Cancer treatments - for the many varieties of cancer - will be more specifically targeted at the cancerous cells. Cancers will be detected earlier and, hopefully, many types of cancer will be prevented. Lung cancers would decline by 80 to 90% in the next 20 years if everyone would stop smoking right now.

100 years ago, cancer was #8 on the top ten killer list compared to #2 now. Relatively few people worldwide smoked a pack of cigarettes a day in 1908.
100 years from now, cancer will still be #2 following old age related cardiovascular disease, but the relative numbers of cancer deaths will be much lower - - IF we work on the global environment and health habits such as smoking.

In the year 2108 we will look back and say the 1990's were the peak years for lung cancer deaths related to the peculiar old habit of smoking a drug known then as tobacco. The kids will be revolted by the the idea that people actually sucked addicting, carcinogenic smoke from burning vegetation into their own lungs. There will be nothing "cool" about smoking.

Answer
1 percent
I still think that people are so ignorant when it comes to electric
cars they only think of one way to make them run and that's batteries.
Its like you lost your mind and have no innovated ability to think of
more than one source of power. Every year people spend millions of
dollars to go to the gym they hop on bikes and treadmills and
ellipticals and pedal away for hours and then pay their gym for it.
Then they hop in their car and pay gas to ride home. The answer was
right in front of your face when you watched the Flintstones as a kid.
Do remember the car on the Flintstones. Hmm, not so stupid now is it?
Do remember how boats got across the ocean? Have you ever held your
hand outside the window and felt the power of the wind resistance
against your hand? The faster you went the more force you felt
pushing against your hand right. Have you noticed that the quality of
solar powered panel technology has increased tremendously in the last
twenty years. The quality of of generators and electric engines is
also there. Our government has manged to keep all of this from you
because they believe you are all ignorant and set in your ways. They
could make cars that run with out wheels but our government would
never allow it to be mass produced. If you had the means to build a
car that had electric generators that produced electricity via wind
power, Human power "recumbent bike pedals", Solar power and maybe some
lithium batteries you would have a car that would go thousands of
miles without ever needing to be charged or fueled.
They
want the price of fuel to sky rocket because most of them own the
stock. The only way to overcome the greed is to take matters into our
own hands and break the grip of Fuel mongrels from ourselves by building
our own fuel free cars. I just showed you the way. Now all you have

How has Biodiesel affected you or your truck?

I am seriously considering using a b20-b99 blend for a 10 year old Ford F-350 powerstroke truck. If anybody has had problems with this in a stock engine please let me know. Thank you!

They
want the price of fuel to sky rocket because most of them own the
stock. The only way to overcome the greed is to take matters into our
own hands and break the grip of Fuel mongrels from ourselves by building
our own fuel free cars. I just showed you the way. Now all you have
to do is " Just Do It!"
My method overcomes the perpetual energy law crap because you get extra energy, Via Human power and solar power! The sun is the source of unlimited free power and so what if you have to pedal your car for it to go long distances. I just saved you from getting fat as hell.

car sales in Sarasota and (2) hardly any sales anywhere! Another government waste project?

Answer
There's no reason for government to be involved in subsidizing electric cars, just like there's no reason for billions in government welfare handouts to oil companies. It all should stop.
*
The best solution for electric car charging stations is to let free enterprise take care of it. Several large retailers - so far, Meijer, CostCo, Walgreens, and Best Buy - have installed free charging stations to lure electric vehicle drivers to their stores. As electric cars gain a foothold, other retailers will follow suit.
*
As to sales of electric cars, the problem is on the supply side, not the demand side. The Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf have been manufactured in limited numbers and sold just to test markets this year, to shake out any production bugs in the cars. Neither car is in full production until 2012.

If Obama wins do you think he can subsidize electric cars in some way?

Grrrrrrrrr

For those counting their dollars like me. We all pretty much know that the middle east is going to blow up if not sooner. My boyfriend bought me a gas guzzler since he wreaked my car. My car was at least more fuel effecient. But I don't thing I will be able drive too much on 8 or 9 dollar a gallon year. Geez the oil companies are still making a mint with Obama. They are putting tv on gas stations with advertisements ad. Uggh!

Answer
He already is. It is already $7500 per car (of taxpayer money).

And now: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2012/02/president-obama-budget-electric-car-subsidies-chevrolet-volt/1

Oh, and BTW, the oil companies themselves make a profit of 7-8 cents on a gallon of gasoline. They do indeed make billions of dollars, but that is only because they sell so many gallons. The next time you go to a filling station note the tax info posted on the pump. Government makes 300%-400% as much as oil companies do on a gallon of gas.

Hey i was wondering about those electric cars they have now that run on a battery for like 12 hours. Gas prices stink!! so I'd like an alternative to gas and i hear they drive really well. thanks!

Answer
As of July 2008, plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles are not yet in production. However, Toyota,[3] General Motors,[4] Ford,[5] Chinese automaker BYD Auto,[6] California startups Fisker Automotive[7] and Aptera Motors,[8] and Volkswagen[9] have announced their intention to introduce production PHEV automobiles. The PHEV-60 BYD F6DM sedan and F3DM hatchback are expected in 2009;[10] the luxury Fisker Karma PHEV-50 sports car is slated for late 2009; and the Toyota Prius, GM's PHEV-40 Chevrolet Volt and Saturn Vue and the Volkswagen Golf PHEV50km plug-ins are expected in 2010.[11][12] Conversion kits and services are available to convert production model hybrid vehicles to plug-ins.[13][14] Most PHEVs on the road in the U.S. are conversions of 2004 or later Toyota Prius models, which have had plug-in charging added and their electric-only range extended.

How high do gas prices have to go?

GoodGuy53

How high do gas prices have to go for you to seriously think about buying a hybrid (gas/electric) car?

Answer
I've never seen anyone do a cost-benefit analysis for a v4 vs v6 vs diesel engine, so why do one for a hybrid drivetrain? Don't forget to include federal and any state tax incentives in your calculation (Consumer Reports forgot, and had to issue a retraction that hybrids are cheaper to own/operate than their gasoline cousins). Edmunds.com still doesn't take into account the true depreciation value (as seen by manually looking for a Prius trade-in value) when calculating their TCO, but they still say that hybrids will pay for themselves even when using their lower than actual trade-in amounts: http://www.cnn.com/2006/AUTOS/08/22/bc.autos.hybrids.reut/index.html

Hybrids do cost less in the long term (lower total cost of ownership) than their conventional counterparts. (Intellichoice used a 5 year ownership comparison in 2006) See:
http://www.intellichoice.com/press/Hybrid-Survey-2006
http://www.intellichoice.com/carBuying101/HypeOverHybrids

While Consumer Reports in 2006 only found the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid would pay off within the same 5 year frame. The Honda Accord Hybrid, the Ford Escape Hybrid, the Lexus RX400h, and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid were also studied.
(I'll note that there was a mathematical error in the initial publication of Consumer Reports' hybrid vehicle cost analysis, which a retraction was published later...
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11637968/ )
Since this publication, many more hybrid models have become available, so I can't use this to say about hybrids "in general."

The problem is that not all hybrids are created equal. There are different hybrid technologies, depending on manufacturer. Even among the same manufacturer, you can find one model tuned for performance (greater power and acceleration than their gasoline-only counterparts) with only a slight fuel efficiency improvement, compared to another tuned for fuel efficiency and low emissions. (See the Honda Accord Hybrid vs. Honda Civic Hybrid, or the Lexus models compared to their sister Toyota models...)

There is more to vehicle ownership besides initial purchase cost and the amount of gasoline used - there is also the costs to maintain and insure it, and also depreciation costs.

However, the societal costs for emissions are not usually included. The hybrids tend to be at worst an ULEV, with many an AT-PZEV. Some are only sold in CA-emissions states. (Compare that to the often suggested VW TDI diesels, which cannot be sold new in CA-emission states because of their poor emissions.) In the US, hybrid models tend to be the best in fuel economy in their respective classes, using the same testing procedure to compare all cars: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/best/bestworstNF.shtml , http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicle/

The hybrid batteries in the currently available hybrid vehicles are usually listed by the manufacturer to last the lifetime of the vehicle, and have long warranties (not pro-rated!, usually 8 years/80,000 miles to 10 years/150,000 miles) to cover it. So far, hybrid battery replacements are VERY uncommon, and rarely out of warranty. Pricing is much better when buying a used unit from a wrecked vehicle (much less than $1000), and not paying dealer-inflated rates/labor prices.

As for the batteries themselves:

The lead-acid (Pb-A) 12v accessory batteries in hybrids tend to be smaller than those found in every traditional gasoline vehicle. Recycling programs are in place for traditional lead-acid batteries.

All the hybrids on the market use NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries, which contain no heavy metals (so they're not hazardous waste, like the Pb-A batteries), and are easily recycled. Often they'll have labels on the packs themselves listing who to contact to recycle them, and often there's a nice cash bounty reward as well.

Usually the mythic "article" from The Mail on the nickel in the hybrid cars' NiMH batteries is quoted from a now retracted article. The retraction that clears up this bit of misinformation is at: http://www.mailonsunday.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/news.html?in_article_id=417227&in_page_id=1770

Size of the vehicle shouldn't be an issue. (A good friend of mine is about 6'9" and bought a Prius because it's one of the few cars he can fit into.) There are hybrid options available for many cars/trucks today, and more models are getting the option all the time, so you should be able to find one that fits both you and your budget. Available US hybrids:
Toyota Prius, Camry, Highlander
Lexus: RX, GS, LS
Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, Mazda Tribute
Honda Civic, Insight (retired model), Accord (retired model)
Nissan Altima
Chevrolet Malibu, Silverado, Tahoe (soon to be released)
GMC Sierra, Yukon (soon to be released)
Saturn VUE, Aura
(now if only Toyota would bring over to the US either of their hybrid minivans (Estima and Alphard) that are available in Japan...)

NONE of the currently commercially available hybrids have the ability to plug into an electrical outlet. The only source of power is conventional gasoline. The gasoline engine provides power to the hybrid battery through one of the electric motors acting as a generator. Some of the lost kinetic energy in braking is recaptured through regenerative braking (wheels spin a generator, slowing down the vehicle), which also reduces wear on the conventional brake pads.

There are no commercially-available plug-in hybrids on the market so far, unfortunately. Some hobbiests and aftermarket companies have been altering a few hybrids (Prius, Ford Escape Hybrid/Mercury Mariner Hybrid) to make them plug-in capable. Typically this requires adding additional hybrid batteries, besides the ability to charge off the mains.
For more information, check out http://www.calcars.org/vehicles.html
(I'll note that some of the manufacturers are looking into having a plug-in hybrid available in the future (2010 or so), such as the Toyota Prius and the Chevy Volt.)

To note, converting to a PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) does not reduce the vehicle's range. It gives the owner the option to recharge the (newly added larger) hybrid battery pack at night (cheap electricity and off-peak electric load which would otherwise be lost). The vehicle would run for a certain distance (longer than stock) on the stored electric power alone, and when the battery pack is depleted to a certain point the vehicle reverts back to its original hybrid self and runs on a combination of the gasoline engine (which will also recharge the battery) and the electric motor. A PHEV would add a greater all-electric range to the existing hybrid, besides the ability (but not the requirement!) to plug it into an electric source.

Depending on the source for electricity in your area, a BEV (battery electric vehicle) may or may not put out more greenhouse gas emissions than a 55MPG HEV (hybrid electric vehicle). Mainly, if the primary source for electricity in your area is coal, your HEV is cleaner than a BEV running on coal-powered electricity. However, if your electricity source is natural gas, the BEV is usually cleaner than the HEV (depending on the method used for natural gas->electricity conversion), and it gets even better for the BEV if you are using a hydroelectric or other renewable electric source. In comparisons with a generic 17MPG SUV, an average 26MPG vehicle, and a high-efficiency 38MPG vehicle, the 38MPG vehicle still will beat the coal-powered BEV, but isn't as clean as the HEV (and gas and renewables powered BEVs are much better than the 38MPG vehicle).
see: "Battery-Powered Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Projects to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: A Resource Guide for Project Development," July 2002
http://www.netl.doe.gov/products/ccps/pubs/resguide.pdf
http://www.eere.energy.gov/cleancities/international/pdfs/hev_ev_ghgreductions.pdf
mainly section 4.3

(and that's besides the arguements that it's easier to manage emissions from a handful of electric plants, as opposed to millions of independently-owned cars... typically, electric charging rates (especially the off-peak charging times which would use otherwise lost power and level the loads) are still cheaper than petroleum rates, too. Of course, there are still emissions to worry about other than just greenhouse gas emissions, too.)

and yes, about 50% of the US' electric energy generation is from coal, but your local mix may be different: http://www.eia.doe.gov/fuelelectric.html

To answer the original question, I bought my first US hybrid, back when gasoline prices were still $0.99/gallon. And it was a good deal then, and still is. Only sedan available at the time with SULEV emissions, and MPG over 40, and it was within my budget and fun to drive to boot. http://www.kluge.net/~felicity/prius.php
