How much pollution does the production of an electric car cause?

Lesley

I am finding this a difficult question to find the answer to but how much pollution is produced when an electric car is made? I mean the actual in factory production? Any help appreciated.

Answer
lets compare here:

these are the very basic steps on how the electric car is made

1: Lead (essential battery ingredient) is mined in africa (environmentalists scream bloody murder when its mined)

2: Nickel (essential battery ingredient) is mined in Canada (environmentalists scream bloody murder when its mined)

3: Nickel and Lead are turned into car batteries in the USA (fossil fuels were used to ship it there)

4: Batteries are flown to Japan, and put in Toyota's Electric cars

5: Cars are distributed all over the world for purchase

6: buyer purchase's his electric car from his local Toyota dealer, 50 km's from his house.

7: due to the lack of range, he gets 20 km/s from his house, and runs out of electricity

8: He plugs it in an electric socket, and after the 16 hour charge cycle is complete, he goes home. Now, before you say thats a price worth paying, lets not forget that the electricity put in the "tank" is from a coal power plant, which the environmentalists want torn down.

Now, lets see how a gasoline powered car is made

1: engine is designed and built in Japan

2: engine is placed in car, which was made in Japan

3: Cars are distributed all over the world for purchase

4: buyer purchase's his electric car from his local Toyota dealer, 50 km's from his house.

5: he gets home safely, has dinner, then goes and shows off his new car to his friends.

As well, top gear took a toyota prius (granted, its a hybrid, but the technology is very similar) and a BMW 3 series, and drove the prius at its grip limits (which are highway speeds, and put the beamer behind it, at the exact same pace. the prius ran out of gas 15 minutes before the BMW

as well, the best electric car (which is a prototype right now) can only do 100 km's, and as mentioned, needs 16 hours to charge, where the electricity is from the already heavily strained coal powered electricity system.

also, as a side note, the audi quattro won the WRC rally championship in 1984, and gets 30mpg. Most of 2011 electric cars get 34mpg, (if the math is done accurately & precisely) and the people are stunned by the incredible savings, and fuel economy?????? yyyyyeeeeeaaaaah. ok then.

conclusion: not only are electric cars harder on the environment than gas cars will ever be, but they have terrible mileage at the end of the day

Where can I read about the all-injection molded, Canadian electric car?

Tahini Cla

A colleague mentioned to me just now that there is a company in Canada which makes an electric car out of only 6 injection-molded parts.
Sounds great - but what's the name of the car, and do you know a link to see it?
Thanks.

Q. I'm going to be babysitting soon, a 2 and a half year old and a five year old. I was just wondering what some fun things are to do while babysitting, I want to be like the best babysitter ever for them.

Answer
-Make play dough! http://www.busybeekidscrafts.com/Salt-Doâ¦
You can even take a small food storage container (of yours) to have the kids decorate with stickers, etc. that will hold their play dough it.

--Go outside!
Play with chalk.
Blow bubbles. (you can even make them)
Take a walk/bike ride
Visit a park
Have a picnic
Bring some water guns
Do a scavenger hunt: Have them find a pink flower, a blue car, etc.

-Decorate a pillow case
Buy some cheap pillow cases, and write their name on it in sharpie. Get some fabric markers for them to decorate the pillow with.

-DANCE!
Put some songs like: The Macerana, the twist, chicken dance, hokey pokey, electric slide, etc. on a CD or a playlist on your ipod. Turn off the lights, expect for some dimmed ones or a lamp, even try to get a disco ball! Let them dance freely, or play freeze dance.

-Play games!
Hide and seek
Twister
Go fish
Slap Jack
Candy Land

-Bowling
Set up a bowling alley with some water bottles or plastic cups as pins, and a soup can as the ball.

-Frost cookies!
Make some cookies before the kids get there, or you go to their house. Let them put frosting and sprinkles on the cookies.

-ColoIring
You can take big poster boards and stamps, stickers, markers... Or you can print off coloring sheets, and have them make their own coloring book

--Limbo...

-Movie "theater"
Bring 4-5 movies for them to pick from, make tickets, have a concession stand.
A fun idea with this topic is if you can bring some large cardboard boxes to make fake cars out of and have a pretend drive in movie.

Just be creative!!
For more ideas please email me at jaide.babysitting@yahoo.com I really love talking to other babysitters!

I need saving tips! I want to save money for a beautiful vacation in Europe. Do you have any?

mariandrea

I'm married and I have 2 kids very early and we had to pospone this ideal trip with my husband. But now we are definitly going to do it, so I need to save money at home. Tips, please!!

Answer
Here's a list:

Shop for lower car insurance. Raise your deductible to $500 on comp and collision (if car is financed) and to $1000 (if car is not financed). This will lower your premium.

Cut out un-necessary expenses in the cable bill dept.

Call up your internet provider and let them know you need a special because there are other company's tempting you to change providers. Even if you don't have another better special, it may surprise you what offer you do receive.

Drop all excess expenses related to you phone bill. Make sure if you call a lot of long distance that you are on a flat billing plan.

If you go out to dinner, ask your spouse what is more important--saving for the trip or dining out. If both matter, maybe going out could mean the $1.00 menu at Wendy's.

Eliminate any NSF fees (if you have them). They will rob you quicker than a robber in the night. How? Refuse to spend money unless you have the cash. Tell people that say that can't wait, too bad.

Limit your trips to using the car once per day. I.E. group all errands and depart only once per day.

Cut out all incidentals. Don't just "drop" and "shop" (dropping whatever fancies you into your shopping cart) PLAN AHEAD WITH A LIST. If you don't think of it ahead of time, don't buy it later.

Buy and install a setback thermostat. Program it so that it only heats while you are all getting up in the morning, and then again after 4 PM when everyone's home. (This could save you hundreds over a few months.) You or small kids at home during the day? Simple. Live in one room during the day while the rest of the house remains cold. You may need to buy a room heater (not electric) to keep the one room warm.

Run the dishwasher on the NO HEAT DRY CYCLE and load that puppy to the hilt = don't run it more than once per day.

Check your water heater setting. If you can manage it, turn it down to just hot enough for showering. Then have everyone shower for a max of 6 minutes per person--no baths.

Change all your light bulbs to low watt fluorescent bulbs. Make sure that you study each bulb in several stores and find the ones that produce a high lumen for a low watt consumption type. (Not all bulbs are the same.) Also, buy at Home Depot the bulbs--forget Safeway type stores, they are grossly overpriced. Wal*mart also has lower priced bulbs. Eliminate all incandescent bulbs (this includes 60 watt standard bulbs in each bedroom, etc. Hint: This will actually cost you a lot of money in bulb cost, but the savings will come back to you. It all depends on how long you burn your lights, and what type of bulbs you already use. If you use 100 watt bulbs and each fixture has 2 - 3 bulbs, you will see a huge savings especially if the bulbs are constantly on. If you use only 1-60 watt bulb in each room of a 2 bedroom apt, you may not realize that much and it may cost you more for the bulbs. But over time, it will pay. Take the expensive bulbs with you when you move, and replace them with 4/$1.00 bulbs so that owner does not charge you when you move.)

Close all the blinds and keep them closed for as much as possible. Heat is retained this way.

Shop at Goodwill and other 2nd hand stores.

Reduce the cost of the Europe Trip by buying right. I.E. Get the best deal on airfare, hotels/hostels, etc.

Get onto reduced lunches (if you qualify) for your kids (if in school).

Buy cheaper detergent. Tide is expensive. Consider the ones that cost at Wal*mart $2.89 (check the quantity of cycles per jug and make sure you are not be ripped off by tricky marketing). The same goes for softener. We have used both and there is not much difference, if any.

Go to the Dollar Store and buy the Oxy Clean Laundry additive--for a $1.00. It helps a lot, especially if you use the cheaper detergents. Our whites come out great. Also, I am continuosly amazed at how much cheaper things are at the dollar store. Yes, it is annoying, but if it puts $20 every 2 weeks into your account that's $400 you would have lost to Safeway over the next 10 months.

Go to the car wash less and do your own car vacuuming at home in the garage.

I really liked the vacation club with direct deposit that is untouchable. That way you won't be tempted to draw it out when you think you need the money. Just treat the deposited amount as if you are paying an important bill that is non-negotiable. Why do we pay others so diligently but we can't even pay ourselves with the same commitment.

Last but not least, run an ad for OVERNIGHT baby sitting services. You may get a few customers who work either the late shift or the late, late shift. In either case, you pick up their children from daycare (at 6 PM when the daycare closes), and keep them, say till 10 PM or later. Better yet, spend the night with you and the parents get them at 7 AM, etc. This is an excellent way to increase your income as much as $500 or so a month. It is a sacrifice for you and your family, but it can also be fun. Then, every penny goes into the vacation account. P.S. Ask the payment be made in cash. Say, you need it this way to avoid a bank trip which is clear across town. Don't get burned with bum checks from people who may not pay--even thoâ you did in providing all the service. Also, for deals like this, it is not out of the question to have them pay a week in advance. I.E. they say they are going to drop the kid or kids 4 days a week. OK, payment in advance for 1 week, and no refunds. No kids dropped, no refunds. This cuts out the whole, I only came 2 times, so I only owe for 2 days nonsense. Remember, you are changing your whole life to cater around the needs of another family, so the least you can do is get paid for that. If they are not serious, then get someone else to work for. Simple as that! But whatever you do, don't get screwed trying to raise a few bucks for an overdue vacation. That's just stupid.

Hope this helps.

How many years ago was the renaissance age?

Who Knows?

How many years ago was the renaissance age? 1000?2000? Probably more.
Are you serious?!?!
I thought it was more that in the 100's number? W.o.W is my mind blown

Answer
The Renaissance was from the 1300s to 1600s, so three/four to roughly seven hundred years ago on the outside.

There is only one definition of Renaissance, which is a French word for rebirth - it marked an era of broad cultural achievement. It is considered the birth of modern history, and it took place in a number of countries through Europe. It started in northern Italy and spread through Europe. There were periods defined within Renaissance - Early Renaissance and High Renaissance, that were defined by art and architecture, and trade. The middle class in society came out of the Renaissance as merchants who gained wealth from trade.

Edit: yeah, lol, it does seem that it was much longer. It's hard to believe that even 50 years ago they didn't have electric typewriters, photocopiers, businesses didn't have computers, cell phones, automatic transmissions on vehicles was just becoming popular, each family only had one car, kids shared beds not just bedrooms, women wore gloves when out in public, and there were three networks on a black and white television with not dvd or even vcr, and just one in every home. And that feels like the Dark Ages now.

When will we switch to all renewable fuels?

Spiderlove

Climate change is clearly having a breath taking effect on the climate. Fossil fuels are playing a big part in it. When do you think we will switch to renewable resources?
Harley is justr a bastard denier.
@Marly, global warming is about to get so bad we will be forced to switch.

Answer
There are various problems that need to be overcome first:

⢠There are vast sums of money invested in fossil fuel infrastructure such as the pipelines, refineries, oil tankers, oil rigs etc. Itâs not financially or economically viable to simply replace them in order to switch to alternative fuels, the costs would be prohibitively high.

Itâs more practical to replace existing infrastructure at the point when it becomes redundant or too expensive to maintain, weâre seeing major power companies going down this route but it will be a long and slow process.

⢠At present the cost of producing alternative fuels is generally more expensive than for conventional fuels. This is down to a combination of economies of scale and infrastructure investment. A lot of the capital investment that went into the fossil fuels industry has been repaid so now thereâs only the operating costs. With little surplus money in the global economy thereâs little inclination to invest long-term capital in alternatives infrastructure.

Itâs essentially a case of do you invest $1.00 now and get $1.20 back in five years, or do you wait 20 years and get $2.50 dollars back. The long-term investment provides a better return but few people have money to tie-up for long periods of time.

⢠The next problem concerns the fact that alternative fuels are limited in their application. Generating electricity via solar, geothermal, tidal, wave, wind etc and feeding it into the grid works well but electricity generation only accounts for a tenth of our greenhouse gas emissions.

At present thereâs no viable alternative to natural gas other than switching to electric. This is not only more costly but means replacing all gas cooking and heating appliances. I remember as a kid when the country (UK) switched from âtown gasâ to natural gas, it was a massive operation and meant replacing or amending every gas appliance in the country and much of the distribution infrastructure as well. In the long run it was worth it as the alternative is much cleaner and cheaper. However, I doubt the current economic appetite would welcome such a proposal, even if an alternative to natural gas were made available.

The thereâs the problem of motorised transport. There are some alternative fuels available for cars but these are limited by availability. They are however becoming more common and in the years to come we will probably see more and more vehicles powered by a variety of technologies such as hydrogen fuel-cells, carbon nanotubes, compressed air and batteries. This still leaves aircraft, shipping and trains.

As to your specific question of when will we switch to all renewable fuels: The process has already begun, albeit on a small scale. We are seeing greater investment in renewables and as the years go by more of our power and fuel demands look likely to be met this way. However, breaking our reliance on fossil fuels will require immense long-term investment and a great deal of new technology and the real crunch point seems likely to come when weâre left with no alternative due to diminishing resources.

The oil companies are notoriously reluctant to provide data about their reserves, worst-case scenario means we run out of oil in 40 years, best-case scenario is 100 years. It may well be that thereâs little change in our demand for oil for a few decades yet.

One big development on the horizon is the arrival of nuclear fusion, the type that doesnât explode or produce radiation. We can already do this in a controlled and small-scale capacity but there are some major hurdles to overcome before itâs commercially viable. The major issue is one of containment, it could be a few years of as many as 20 or 30 before weâve cracked this. Once achieved, fusion could easily supply the worldâs electricity demands for very little cost.

poll: do you think it would be a good idea for America to adopt unemployment laws like the UK?

Q. Where people can collect dole from the government for years and never have to work.

Answer
Well those laws work just great in Ireland, our "dole" for an unemployed man in his 50s with a girlfriend who earns next to nothing and 2 teenage kids at home is $555 a week, yes a week, 378 Euros which is $555 of your American dollars.

That said once the mortgage, electric bill, telephone bill, fuel bill, TV licence, diesel for the car etc etc have have been paid and the fridge has been stocked with food for the week there ain't a lot left, Ireland is a very expensive place to live.

However you do get 20 Euro a week winter fuel allowance from Oct-March plus a double dole week for Christmas :) plus you get free medical/dental treatment, free kids bus to school, free school books and $700 "back to school" allowance for shoes and uniforms if you apply in the summer.

Also free training courses to get you back to work even
though there are no jobs.

How can I stay home with my son?

Atreyu & K

I am a working mother, but would love to stay home with my son. My husband and I can not afford to have only one of us working. I am looking for money making ideas that I can do from home. I cannot watch other children. I have a very hyper dog, and our place is a small condo (on bedroom). We are working on getting out soon.

Answer
You may be surprised to find that by working full time, you actually aren't making that much money at all. My daughter was in daycare full time from the time that she was 2 weeks old until the time that she was 18 months old. My husband and I thought that there was no way that I could afford to stay home because we were barely making ends meet on two full time incomes. But we sat down and figured out what it was actually costing me TO work and that after paying for daycare, extra gas for my car, clothing/uniforms, extra meals, taxes, office dues and all of the other "little expenses" that are work related and by making a few cuts here and there that we would actually be able to SAVE money ($200 to $400 a month) by having me stay at home.

**We moved to a smaller, old house (our home is 900 square feet, and has 2 bedrooms, a living-dining room a bathroom and a kitchen, and our house is 100 years old, but in good shape). Our monthly house payments on it are $500 on a 30 year loan.

**We drive older vehicles. My car and my husband's truck are both 10 years old - my car (which is actually still my highschool car which I bought used 6 years ago), is paid for and my husband's truck will be paid for next year.

**We don't have any credit card debt. We got rid of our credit cards (granted, we only had two in our possession and didn't owe anything on them), and now only keep one which we have through a credit union bank for emergencies (such as we're traveling and the car breaks down), but it's kept locked in a safe and we havn't used it for years. If we want something, we gradually save up for it.

**We don't have extras such as satellite t.v., cable t.v. or cell phones. My husband and I havn't had cell phones since we moved almost 5 years ago because the rural area we live in doesn't have cell phone reception and we don't need one. We also have never had cable so we don't miss it and it's just crap on it anyways so what's the point? Our only utilities are gas, electric, water, and a local land phone line.

**We don't buy new stuff to keep up with the Jones's. Our furniture is all used - all given to us as a matter of fact and the newest piece is 10 years old. We have 1 t.v., the 27" one I received as a gift for my highschool graduation 6 years ago - sure all of the buttons on it are broken but it can still be run with the remote and as long as it works, then hey that's all that matters...lol. We also don't buy hightech gadgets at all. We have a VHS player and a DVD player (the VHS player is from my highschool days - my parents were going to throw it out but I'm like "No! I'll take it!", and the DVD player was a wedding gift that we received when we were married 5 years ago) and that's about as techno as it gets for us.

**We don't spend money on uneccessary things such as new clothes (unless they are really needed which in reality, you only need new clothes a maximum of twice a year really, and even that's just updating a couple pairs of pants and a new shirt or two) and also spending money on fashion accessories is a waste (such as that handbag or shoes or necklace or sunglasses that some people just "HAVE" to have). We don't go shopping unless we need something and usually the only things we need are grocery items, so that's the only time we go shopping.

**Try to save some money by clipping cupons, watching the grocery adds for specials and shopping for clothes at garage sales (especially great for kids clothes as most are hardly worn and can be purchased for mere pennies, and occasionally I'll find some great deals at garage sales on clothing too).

**We don't go out or eat out. Like, ever. lol. My husband's and my dates consist of going for a drive or a walk or maybe springing for a cup of hot chocolate or coffee and talking for awhile in a quiet corner of our favorite coffee house. As far as eating out, we don't really miss it because since I'm home, I am perfectly capable of cooking meals every night because I have the luxury of time.

** I should say that my husband only brings in $27K a year after taxes (not sure how much that would be in Europe), but here it's not much at all and that's what we live off of without any kind of assistance or anything. Even living off of this, by pinching our pennies like we do, we are able to save $200 to $300 a month and still have a $300 cushion in our checking account between paychecks in case anything unexpected comes up (my husband gets paid every two weeks).

Sometimes it isn't easy, and it is tight and it does take LOTS of self discipline to stick to a strict budget, but it's worth it and it can be done! We live on $27K a year (that's what my husband brings home after taxes), and we make it work out just fine for our family. For a little extra cash, I watch a neighbor girl for an hour or two in the mornings - from about 6:00 a.m. until the school bus arrives at 7:30 a.m. It gives me a little extra cash which enables me to buy a cute outfit for my kids every now and then or something that I like (I love to do scrapbooking). So anyways, hope this helped!

Due to a short notice PCS move we have to stay in a hotel for three weeks which the Army will reimburse us for?

Armywife44

ten days. The hotel is nice but has no fridge or microwave in it. How can we keep our food budget under control ? Any military famlies been through this before? We have two sons and dread eating at McDonals for three weeks!

Answer
This is going to test your patience and your creativity, but you can do it. I would definitely look in to buying a small electric cooler (the kind that can plug into the car or the wall outlet) or a mini-fridge - it will pay for itself quickly. You would probably need the hotel's permission for a mini-fridge, but not for the cooler. You might also ask the hotel if you could use a toaster oven or a microwave. Most will say no but you don't know until you ask. Or maybe one of those little devices that heats up a cup of coffee - surely it could do soup, too. Do you have transportation to grocery shop? For at least a few days, it can be your big outing: what to buy, how creative can your kids be, and then get them something that you wouldn't usually allow as a treat.

There are a remarkable number of things you can make using hot water from the coffee maker: oatmeal, grits, ramen noodles, easy mac. Lots of raw fruits and vegetables (just give in and buy the already prepared veggie trays.) My kids will eat the fresh chicken nuggets (Purdue is the brand here) cold. Bagged salads with the already prepared chicken. You'll have to give in to buying prepared things but you can do it.

Lastly, you might want to consider changing hotels to something with a fridge and microwave, and/or breakfast included. Included breakfast would be well worth a few extra dollars in the room rate, plus it would keep you sane and full.

Good luck to you! You can do it.

I watched the documentary "Who killed the electric car" the other day. I'm not sure what really happened, nor do I care about much except the fact that I really really want an electric car. Do they even sell a single one anymore?
The reason I want one isn't only because of the environment or the outstanding gas prices, it's because I feel that it's the 21st century and we have this new technology, yet we spend all of our efforts on an already ancient energy source when we could already go electric! I hate the crap people spew out that "gas gives people jobs" and nonsense like that. It's called adapting to change and increasing efficiency. Fossil fuels and petroleum aren't efficient anymore

Answer
-------------
They are available today - in fact, I already drive one - there are lots of choices for electric cars, and more on the way. Electric vehicles can have performance as good or better than gas-powered cars, and they cost a lot less to operate (only a penny or two per mile.) Why don't we all know about them? Why do so many people 'know' wrong facts about them? Good question!

First, the inexpensive ones:
*
Electric vehicle conversions (a gas car converted to run on electricity) are generally pretty inexpensive, and can be had for as little as $5000. You won't get the latest technology, so you'll have a limited driving range. But a conversion is a great way to 'get your feet wet' in electric vehicles. This is the sort of car I drive. It does freeway speeds, accelerates and handles fine, and looks like a normal car. I charge mine up at work so I have enough juice to run errands on the way home. Here's a link:
*
http://www.squidoo.com/cheap-electric-car
*
How about new tech electric cars? If you don't need to get on the freeway, you might like the ZAP. The ZAP is only $10,000 brand new. It's very cute, but tops out at about 45mph. It's not much bigger than a motorbike. Link:
*

*
How about the ultimate EV? Take a look at a modern electric car:
*
http://phoenixmotorcars.com/models/fleet.html
*
The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:

-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)
*
Now, as to performance - you can't beat the Tesla electric sports car - it does 130mph, and 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds. Driving range is 250 miles:

Would you buy an electric sports car?

Tomsriv

I wouldn't because I need to hear the engine, thats the whole point of a sports car. I hope enough people buy electic and hybrid cars to save the planet so I don't have to. I choose to save the planet in other ways, but not with my car.

Answer
NO. As you said it just would not sound right.

Q. How do you think electric cars could help the environment and make a better future?

Answer
Yup, it helps reduce carbon emission. Think about it, normal cars burn fuel to produce energy to move the car and carbon dioxide gas.

Electric cars too need energy which comes from a power station.(Burning fuel to get energy and produces carbon dioxide gas) However, when one uses electric car instead of a normal car, with the same amount of energy, there is less carbon dioxide gas being produce.

It helps by reducing the amount of green house gases. Green house gases are the gases which absorb more heat, thus causing and increase in tempuratue in the atmostsphere.

I am considering buying a pure electric car, but I have been told that they are hazardous to the environment?

Karel

I want to buy an electric car - a Nissan Leaf - because I want a car with a minimal environmental impact, but I now hear that electric cars have an even greater negative impact on the environment than a petrol V8. Apparently the damage done by mining the Lithium etc used in the batteries, and the disposal of the old batteries is a huge hazard, and the Carbon impact of manufacturing it is much higher than a conventional car - even given the subsequent emissions. The argument is that the electric grid is "dirty". Should I cancel my order and buy a petrol car instead?

Answer
Put yourself in the shoes of a petroleum executive - electric cars are a threat to your business, aren't they? What would you do? Wouldn't you happily spread half-truths and disinformation to scare your customers away from them?
*
That is precisely what is happening. All the the things you have heard are either mostly or entirely untrue, and I can prove everything I say with authoritative sources.
*
Of course, mining and manufacturing are not environmentally pure things to do - but are electric cars really worse in this regard than gas vehicles? Of course they are not. It's true that EVs have things (big batteries) that gas cars don't , but the opposite is also true. EVs don't have many parts and systems found in conventional cars, like an exhaust system, oil system, coolant, large engine (electric motors are very small), fuel system, etc. All those extra parts and fluids have a carbon and pollution footprint, too, that EVs don't contribute to.
*
Bottom line - depending on battery type, the EV may start with a higher factory footprint, but this is easily and quickly offset from the higher energy efficiency from driving and from recycling. The study I link to below shows this.
*
And old batteries are NOT disposed of in landfills - they are recycled. Auto batteries are currently the most consistently recycled item on earth - something like 95% of auto batteries get recycled. Modern EV lithium batteries also are NOT made from toxic materials. See sources below.
*
The electric grid is only dirty because of coal - but coal use is declining. It reached a low of just 32% of the grid last year (in the US). You can't even escape electricity use by buying a petrol car, because large amounts of electricity is used to refine oil into gasoline! See sources below.
*
At least EVs don't burn a side of oil with their electricity.

My boyfriend wants a remote control car to play around with and i want to get him one that is fun, not as slow as the ones you can get at Toys R US, but also not $400. Does anyone have any good ideas. I am not too savy on the specifications, but i found one from Silverlight that was orignally 120 and not on sale for 40. Here is what it says:

Answer
Sounds like a good one. You always want to go with digital proportion controls(as you noted) If there are any hobby shops nearby consider making a trip to one of those... But make sure...whatever you buy.. is no Nitro powered. If you get nitro it requires nitro fuel and some technical skill to operate and use correctly. Silverlit is a good company, it is namebrand. I have bought one of there helicopters before, it was a cheap model. It ran good, although it was two channel.

The 6v 750 mAh NiCd battery means it is fast trust me he will be impressed.

are RC vehicles appropriate for a 10 year old boy with ADHD?

Jr. is ang

I am looking for something he can focus his over abundance of energy on. I am thinking of buying broken vehicles and let him take them apart, learn how to fix them and swap parts until he gets some of them working.
can he work on them with minimum supervision? i mean, he can use hand tools, but no power tools without an adult, so he needs to do most of the work on his own.
should i go with the better adult type, or the cheap ,kids, wal mart type?
battery or fuel?
can a 10 year old use the fuel powered ones without adult supervision?
if you think it is a good idea, are there clubs or on line groups he can join to get help fixing things?
at this point i am not trying to get him to build these with pride, i expect him to use a lot of hammers and duct tape, i just want him to learn to think, create, take several vehicles apart to build one.
he is getting into trouble, getting into things he shouldnt, breaking things. I want to find something where he can start to learn if he takes the time to study it, find the right tools, go online for help, he can build something he will like. then , of course he could get more broken vehicles and make something even better.
right now, everything is hammer, smash. or worse, "can I use the table saw"? " how about the chain saw"?

Answer
I think it would be a great idea. You can get some pretty cheap on ebay. I would get him some good opens and stay away from WalMart, Radio Shack, etc. If you get the cheap kinds they are impossible to find replacement parts. If you go with a hobby store grade RC, the parts are endless. It all depends on how much you want to spend too. Some of the top brands are Traxxas (my fav), HPI, Losi, Kyosho, Associated and Tamiya. If you go to ebay and search "(brand name I mentioned) Roller" you will see a ton of used rolling RC's with no motor or electronics. Basically parts cars. You can get a couple of them for him to work on. That's what I do, fix up old beat up RC's and make them new again. It takes some concentration and patience and no power tools or saws are required. There are some RC tool kits you can get him around $35+ that will fit any RC car. And when he fixes them up, he would have a blast running them, crashing them and fixing them up again. Nitro fuel isn't something to mess with if you don't trust that he can take care of it. The flame is almost invisible and dangerous. Nitro RC's require more maintenance and more skill to put together though. Like rebuilding the motors. So he might like that better, and you or another adult can be in charge of the fuel. Electric is good too, just not as much to learn, in my opinion. Either way, I think he would love doing it and it would require him to focus and concentrate. It does get frustrating but what doesn't, really? Good luck and get involved with him. You might enjoy it as well!

Does this seem about right for the auto industry bailout?

Abel Skivv

In most pro sports, the losing-est team of the last season has the first picks from the next years' draft so as to stimulate a balanced competition between a variety of teams - there are also spending caps so as to also not overload one or two teams, otherwise within a couple years it'd obviously be simple to have one or two teams that just dominate the entire NFL for instance, and then continue to dominate, because those teams would most likely have the most perpetual revenue - then suddenly people lose interest in watching two teams dominate the entire sport - wane from boredom, from real competition

it seems that's basically what the auto industry has been over the past 50 years or so - electric cars have been designed and built for decades, cars have been built to run on ethanol since, well since Ford built his Model T because that's what he built it to specifically run on..

but by and large, in terms of government funding, contracts and tax breaks, the "Big Three" have utterly dominated - squashing the true viability of any competition in the market

now, that they're hitting a major "losing streak" how can it be considered fair to grant them even a larger advantage now that alternatives have begun having viability by their own ingenuity, creativity, and demand

the comparison to me seems quite valid

and the idea of a handout to them seems laughable - like giving the Patriots a $100 million handout and top draft picks because they didn't have a three-peat in 2006

and then if a bailout goes through -- shouldn't we taxpayers each get stock certificates?
I fail to see how giving out "corporate welfare" to an obviously failed business concept will "provide jobs" - it's only providing handouts

Answer
I couldn't agree with you more--espicially on the issue of stock certificates to ALL TAXPAYING Americans!!! And you're right about "the Big Three" automakers successfully creating lines of ethanol fuel and electric powered cars--and keeping their secrets locked away for decades; they made cozy bedfellows with American Big Oil.

And you know what they say about bedding the Devil........

I doubt "the Big Three" are anywhere near critical financial straits, given their gleeful years of receiving juicy mega-billion dollar Government grants. Once the successful mass sale of electric cars and trucks hits showrooms---"the Big Three" stand to make behemoth profits beyond their wildest dreams; so they should spare the woeful pitch they'll quickly pay back the "bailout loan".. get up off their azzes and mass sell electric cars.

If there's any faults existent within "the Big Three", I see 4 reasons:

1) They grew too big, too fast---and got too greedy. They carried on for years like they were indestructible gods---hiring too many employees and spending way too much on equipment overhead.

2) They allowed total deregulation of their auto dealerships--who were equally spend reckless, greedy----and unscrupulous, rife with deceptive retail pratices. Dealerships gave "sales incentives" to their dealers--who got very busy scamming customers and hiring mechanics who had a "how much you got, boyahhh??" idealology when it came to per hour labor fees and overpriced part fees.

Who'd ever thought their greatest auto sales / service enemies would be those plentiful "pre-owned" car sales lots with fair sales / service pratices??? Who says nice guys don't finish first???

3) Bad overseas investments made. Dealerships inter-networked with their "Big Three" headquarters and together, they made some dumb overseas investment decisions that left them ripped clean off. And the lesson there kids is: Automakers should not dabble in banking.

4) The automakers are held as weak hostages to their American Big Oil bedfellows. Bad things can happen to your corporation IF you hint at mass sales production of alternative vehicles and electric powered vehicles; these vehicles pose serious threats to Big Oil profits.

I'm sure any one or all these reasons are being worked by "Big Three" lobbyists as "plea pitches" to Congress for bailout loan approval. But given their Republican domination of the auto market, it could be a slim chance they will get their juicy bailout $$$$.

And even if they were to get it, their woeful problems will still be there---evolving to grow larger and worse. They'll be better off defying Big Oil and mass selling electric and ethanol powered vehicles.....and they better get it done on the ASAP.

How should I handle my selfish Spouse?

Q. I am always willing to do everything in my power to help my spouse finanicially but, he will not do that for me. For example, when he's short on money paying our bills or his bills. I always pick up the slack, which I don't have a problem with at all! I've even put my credit on the line for my spouse and he's left me with bills to pay on my own. Eventually, I had to file for bankruptcy! But when it comes to me! It's always an excuse or he tells me he just doesn't have any money to spare for me. But he doesn't make that excuse when it comes to his mother or his siblings. It's like I always come last. I suggested that he gets another job part-time to pay his bills. All I got was"Why should I get another job when I already got one?" "I'm not going to get another job when I already worked hard for 8 hours already!" I've considered just leaving, but I have the kids to consider. I work and go to school and take care of a household. I don't feel like my spouse cares me. I feel like a used ATM.

Answer
In most marriages it technically is the man's responsibility to take care of the family. If he is unwilling to do this then it might be better for you to get your own place. That however does not give you the license to cheat or have boyfriends anymore than it allows him to.
Does he pay the electric, water, rent/housepayment, gas and gas and insurance for the car? Does he buy the food?
If he does these things then any other bill is not necessary.
If you have had to file bankruptcy because of bills other than house bills then something is wrong with both of you.
I find it difficult to see that either of you were thinking clearly when it came to pay for things or buy things so they do not have to go on credit.
I would not have a problem contributing to the house but I would have a problem if he made for example 1000 dollars a month and our bills are only 350 dollars and he is unable to pay for the bills. Where is the money going? Why are you all so over extended? Is it just his siblings and mother?

Why doesnt Chevy just drop the gas engine in the Volt and make an all electric option?

best upcoming electric cars

best upcoming electric cars image

A B

The eletric range is great for the city just back and forth to work. If they made an all electric option for about $20K i would go for it %100. Without the gas engine it should be cheaper anyway right? Most people just want an electic car for the work week anyway. Thats when we use the most gas.

Answer
Chevy does have an all electric car on the way, the GM Spark.
*
The Spark will be good for people with more than one car, or for people whose daily driving fits inside the range of an all-electric vehicle.
*
However a PHEV like the Volt or the upcoming Toyota Prius Plug-in is a better choice for one-car families, or for people who need a fuel-efficient car to take occasional long trips.
*
All types of car - hybrid, fuel-efficient gas, plug-in hybrid, or electric - are cost efficient under the right circumstances. There's a spreadsheet on the page below that shows this - play with different driving requirements, and different gas prices, and you will see different types of cars winning cost-of-ownership scenarios. And yes, that even includes the Volt.

In 1905, you could walk in, and purchase any one of a dozen electric cars. Now you can't. Why?

Q. I bought this book about old cars. Between 1905 and 1914, there were about a dozen electric car companies. Now, you can't buy one. Why?

Answer
Batteries could only provide a small range. Even the upcoming Nissan Leaf only gets a hundred miles or so (and that's using lithium ion batteries which are far better than the ones they had back then!)

A tank of oil lets you drive hundreds of miles and it's easy to distribute and put into cars. So it won.

The price of petrol and diesel are rising day by day and our hydrocarbon reserves are diminishing...Although researches are still going on..to find a substitute, what else can we do to prevent "lack of fuel" condition??

Any ideas?Any sugestions??
Johnnie, as you said, the earth recycles....but,it takes a huge amount of time for that...Also...the organic matter(such as plants, animals etc..) are also getting used up..

Answer
First thing we could do would be to talk about it, spread awareness, let people know that there is an issue which needs to be tackled before it turns into a crisis. You posing this question depicts that we (at least you) have got the first step right.

Let me first state that in my opinion, there is no out-of-the-box easy solution for this. The only answers are search for newer and non-traditional sources of energy like geothermal energy, tidal energy, solar energy, liquid hydrogen, garbage energy etc and exercise controlled and minimized use of non-replenishable sources of energy.

Here are a few suggestions-

1- Save oil!
Seen as a caption in many of the children's painting competitions- "Save Oil!" should be the motto of everyone around the planet. Personal automobiles should be used less. Public transport facilities should be ameliorated.

2- Go CFL!
Compact fluorescent light bulbs should replace the energy consuming electric bulbs. Likewise, age-old machines should make way for the modern energy efficient appliances.

3- Check vehicles!
What was the last time you neglected your bike/ car's poor average and mileage? Over-consumption should be kept under check by keeping your ride in good condition.

4- Search!
Search for new oil reserves might just buy us more time to think over and solve the impending crisis.

5- Fire and oil make a deadly combo...
Keep the oil refineries and reserves well protected from fire. Not only these accidental fires cause a loss of money and lives, they result in huge loss of the natural resources.

6- Encourage the solar cooker.
Don't mock the nuclear plant. It is a shy but bright kid. Kidding! Ok bad joke... I mean to say- we should slowly work towards establishing non-traditional sources of energy in our lifestyles. Nuclear energy still has a wide scope of application. Same with hydroelectric, solar, wind and other alternatives.

7- Turn off the lights, switch off the fans....
You're probably yawning reading this. This had been repeated so many times but still... you have to save energy in day-to-day affairs.

8- Spread awareness.
Yes, we need more campaigns. The chapters in our social-studies books have already told and retold us all these things but, there is a certain crowd that needs to be told about this in a more effective manner.

9- Smokeless and fuel efficient chulhas.
Here, in India, villages still rely on fuel wood and coal for their basic energy needs. The smokeless chulhas (stoves) go a long way in conserving wood from blind consumption.

10- Use Biogas.
We need more biogas plants. They, in my view, are the best and simplest alternatives in terms of energy cycling. Go biogas! So what if it doesn't smell like roses?

11- Population!
All these measures are of no or little use if the consumption still keeps growing. How about we put a check on population growth? We have been listening to this since the beginning! Do something! Take lessons from China!

12- Plant trees....
Again a well-known and over-discussed solution. We need more mass campaigns. More fuel wood trees and shrubs should be grown.

What do u think is going to happen in the next 10 years?

what will change in the world?is it going to be much better living than today?

Answer
Powered exoskeletons may be seen on some construction sites in Japan and on the future battlefields of america's conquest choosing. We won't be going to mars for another 20 years hence. America will still be locked in the battle between red and blue. Dubstep will fall out of popularity and begin its long and sad spiral into only being played in the underground. Good riddance. Justin beiber will stop performing and live out the rest of his days in luxury. I myself am not a fan at all, but I don't hate the kid personally. Meanwhile, his fans will grow up and find themselves on their own musical journeys and start listening to other kinds of music that they were once hostile and averse towards. I think its a reasonable assumption. I don't think there is going to be any total war this century. Youtube might even fall out of favor and be replaced by something else. I can't imagine thugs on the streets driving around in electric cars. They predict that the economy may take another plunge and so things are fixing to get worse. China is a couple of inches away from complete societal upheaval. Russia is limping into the new world and may find itself again feeling like they have accomplished something good with themselves governmentaly speaking yet again. A glorious societal rainbow of cultural goodness, if you count that rainbow as red, powder blue and white. Tibet will still be under Chinese rule. South park and My little pony will be on reruns long before the end of the next decade.
Rail guns may be seen on american ships capable of lobbing projectiles up to 400 miles away at supersonic speeds. The ISS may have lives out its operational life span and be de-orbitted. Israelites may have developed better anti theater ballistic missile technology than they have today.

I have looked at hundreds of topics for argument essays but I don't have strong opinions about any of them one way or the other. I tried writing on a couple of the topics I found but I couldn't think of anything to say. The assignment is due very soon. Please help.
@Mike: Thanks for the suggestion but you have just demonstrated why I think this assignment is stupid and pointless. An argument essay is just stating the obvious that most people already know. One silly little essay is neither long nor complex enough to solve any social problems. So what is the point? Am I supposed to regurgitate information that I've obtained from the work of others?

Answer
Here's a few ideas............

Argue whether or not senior citizens, at a certain age, should have to re-take their driving test every year or every 3 years, or whatever, due to dimentia or a rise in dimentia and altzheimers. You could easiy research accident statistics for different age groups as well as dimentia statistics.

Argue whether or not electric cars can really work. There are charging stations on the east coast and on the west coast, but not many in the rest of the United States. This means that people can't travel as far as they would with gasoline. (I really don't understand why though because can't they just plug them in somewhere else?) Anyway, this is a recent topic.

Argue that we should be drilling for oil in Alaska, as Sarah Palin has been fighting for.

Argue whether or not the Tea Party will last and stand up to the Republican and Democratic parties.

Argue whether it is really feasible to have solar power in houses due to the extremely high cost of equipment needed for solar power. How long would someone have to live in their house to pay off the equipment and actually start saving money over electric power.

Argue why cable and dish network prices keep on rising. It's ridiculous. They say it's so that they can put more satellites in space but how many do we need.

Argue about whether or not children should have an obligation to take care of their parents once they can't take care of themselves as they do in china and japan and some other countries. In the U.S. we stick them in a nursing home and some other places that don't take good care of them and are actually abusive to them because there isn't enough money to put them in a decent place.

Argue about why 1 in 5 kids go to bed hungry in the U.S. every night when there are people in this country who have so much money. How many millions does one person need? Michael Jordan just put his mansion up for sale and it has 18 bathrooms in it. I know he worked for it but still.......!

Argue about the influence and affect to education, cell phones have had on school kids and at what age should they have a cell phone.

*****Argue about why there are kids shooting in schools, killing teachers and other kids, a few times each year. This is happening more and more. Columbine high school was the first, I believe, and that was in 1999. There have been 31 school shootings since columbine and only 14 school shootings in the rest of the world. There's a lot of info on this subject. Do we need metal detectors in every school? Should they be in elementary schools? Middle schools? Only high schools? Is there another solution?

What is the average cost to raise a child?

Dark Spiri

This is for a child development project. Does anyone know what the average cost is? Also, can you give me a link to the website where you got your information? Please dont just say alot of money, I already know this. Be specifc please!

Answer
That is really hard to even determine, because it really has to do with HOW the child is raised. How many siblings they have.

I have 6 children and am extrememly FRUGAL. I mean I do NOT buy anything unless it is on sale. And I obviously spend less money per child now then I did when I had just one child.

I am gonna guesstimate on how much it takes for ONE of my children to get raised in a year. I will NOT include housing, electric, car. Because I had all that stuff before I had kids and that to me shouldn't be included.

Ok, I figured about 2500 dollars per child I spend a year. That includes clothes, food, school supplies, school accessories(field trips, yearbooks etc.). I know that doesn't sound like a lot. But that is for a young child, they really don't eat that much and like I said I am a sale shopper. Now if I included housing, electric, and car payment divided by 8, which is our household size I would have to add 2100.00 per year.

No websites, but I hope I helped.

I have to remove bolts from my car to get the license plate off, but they're really rusty. I'm really limited for tools too, all I've got is a couple of small screwdrivers and a hammer. My uncle's got a blowtorch, but I doubt he'll let me use it. I thought I could chisel away around the screw, and make it fit on the new car with a washer, but that might take too long. Also, a screwdriver won't lock into the groove, it's too rusted over. What do you think I should do?

What is your vision for the future of America?

Lleh

I don't mean what do you think is reasonably possible given the present circimstances. I don't mean the names of the leaders who can make it happen. I just want to know what you really want America to be like in the best of all possible (or impossible) futures. What will your kids and grandkids and great great grandkids experience in the best America you can envision?

Answer
What I would want the nation to be and what it is most likely to become are two entirely different things.

It would have been nice if Americans discovered to concentrate their living into compact but livable cities, rather than the sometimes insane urban sprawl. I myself live outside the nearby city, but in a housing development that is surrounded by meadows. Unfortunately, that scene will soon change when the nearby airport expands.

We spread out so much, not to farm or do ranching or such then-localized economic activity. But it is to live apart from where we work. If this country did as a hundred years ago, in this aspect alone, there would be people living near where they work. There also were trams and trolleys in network through some rural areas, so not everyone had to have a horse or car in order to live their lives. But today, mass transit solutions are impossible (or impossibly expensive) because we are not conveniently concentrated.

I would like to see the use of solar cells on every roof, storing up energy (probably in basements or garage batteries or fuel cells) during the day and keeping the home conveniently comfortable at night when we return from work or whatever. While some, though not all, manufacturing processes are terrible polluters, perhaps the alternative, mechanical processes would work (their efficiencies are greater, but need more maintenance considerations) such as mirrors that heat fluids into gases. I would think that telecommuting would be a bigger thing, more people comfortably working from the comfort of home, but with technology keeping them sufficiently connected to keep them from loneliness (or loafing). With robots and automation, a home with a basement or a workshop in the backyard could even be a mini-assembly stage of industry.

Closed-cycle processes need to be employed, not so much as the "green thing to do" but because they are less polluting and more manageable. Electric cars (charged up by my home's own electricity, generated by the sunlight that naturally falls on my roof, currently merely heating my attic and the air around it) could help me get around.

Another thing is the old concept of staged transportation. Air travel is only for long distances where the travel must necessarily be swift (family emergency in a distant city, an engineer needed to fix a unique problem) or for very long distances. Trains were for regional transport of people. Buses were for local transport. Of course, as suggested before, places like work, church, and the grocery should be close enough to walk there.

Finally, I suspect that some common services might need something akin, but not directly, to socialization of medicine and transport. I like capitalism and the freedom it allows. But until we discover on our own the ways to nicely live together we are missing the convenient opportunities to do such common things as provide an inexpensive and unburdening transportation or medical system. We largely do that with education.

Unfortunately, politics and historical baggage make my 'vision' impossible, impractical, or undesireable, even to me. Getting the needed agreement simply won't happen. The ideas have been around a long time, good ideas, but unworkable unless forced upon us -- undesireable if they are forced.

can I replace my 6v 4.5ah battery with 6v 12ah battery?

Cool PR

My son has an electric power wheel car that I bought from EBay. it comes with a 6 volt 4.5 ah battery, but seems to run weak on slight up hill side walk. I also have a Speed racer 6v car which runs fine. Would a 6v 12ah battery help or just extend the joy ride. How about a slight increase in amps like 8Ah or will that burn the motor? Any ideas will help. Here is what it looks like http://cgi.ebay.com/RC-Remote-Control-Ride-On-Power-Wheels-Mini-Kid-Car_W0QQitemZ360157224808QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRadio_Control_Vehicles?hash=item53db0b1f68&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1205|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50

Answer
As long as the voltage is the same, it should be safe to run the higher ah battery. The higher amphour rating will last longer between charges. The same as replacing a 12v 400 ah battery in a car with a 12v 800 ah battery. Just make sure it will physically fit.
