Ford research on electric cars
Answer
Ford's first electric vehicle was an all electric version of the Transit Connect adapted to electric drive by Azure Dynamics: http://green.autoblog.com/2012/03/28/azure-halts-ford-transit-connect-electric-production-ford-still/
Later Ford adapted the focus to electric drive in house. http://www.ford.com/green/fuel-efficiency/

Ford has chosen to view the EV as a drive option rather than a completely different vehicle.

Answer
Tesla's first electric car, the Roadster, has been in production since 2008. This is a high-end sports car, sold to a select market of car enthusiasts. There are a little over 2,000 of them on the road today:

Tesla did apply for a $465 million loan from the department of energy in 2009. This loan was to help with the development of the Tesla Model S, an electric sedan with a 300-mile driving range. This money was not "given" to Tesla - it is a loan, which will be paid back.

The link below shows the Model S, which will go into production in 2012. It is an expensive car, but it boasts sportscar-level performance, and 300 miles of electric driving range:

Tesla recently announced they will not need any more energy department loans:
