I am doing research to find out what it would take to convert a car to electric? Could anyone give me prices on kits. Or links to websites. You can exclude the price of the car, motor, and batteries. I can also build things like the battery box or motor mounts. I am more concerned about the everything else such as the wiring harness, controllers, adapter plates, etc. I have done a good bit of google searching, but not much luck. It is just rather difficult to find a website that is straight forward about pricing.
Answer
It varies according to how much you want to get out of it. If you want Tesla Roadster performance you can expect to spend well over $55,000. Popular cars to convert are the original Volkswagen Beetle, the Chevy S10 pick-up, and Porsche's so there are partial kits and full kits available minus the batteries. One company will sell you a kit for any car that they have an adepter plate for.
Most home conversions can be had for around the $12,000 mark. You can do a budget for less than $6,000 but you may have to sacrifice highway performance. There is a report of a high school kid building an EV for $600 but he used a lot of scrounged and donated parts. There is a gentleman in Canada that claims to have technology to revive dead lead acid batteries (he gets them for free) and he puts them in his EV conversion. The biggest expense in a EV conversion is the batteries.

I might be moving my wife, toddler twins and new baby to Illinois and I need to know if we can survive on my single income. If anyone living in the general area can help me figure out the range for the following budget items I would be really grateful.
Home insurance (say 200k home)--
Car insurance (newer car and van, good driving record)--
Phone--
Internet--
Cable--
Utilities (electricity, heat and water)--
Cellphone--
Food (eating almost exclusively at home)--
@ tichur: I would be working near palos heights and it seems like houses in green island or alsip fit the 190-210 range

I'm from Iowa originally and currently live in NY but here's a run down of aproximations:
Home owners insurance: I'd say around $125 per month, probably less- but you can escrow that in with your property taxes...
Car Insurance: between 100-200 depending
Phone, Internet & Cable you should be able to get a package deal for $100 per month- 29.95 per service
Utilities:
Electric: 100-150
Heat: Varies, depends on if you have gas or electric heat
Water: max of 100 per month
Cellphone: our plan is 2 phones, 700 min for $106 per month
Food: with children, I'd say min of $500 a month. My husband and I probably spend about $100 per week and we have no kids.
I'd say you're looking at around $1,125 per month...
Best of Luck, Chicago is a great city!!
