Can i get a solar panel system w/ battery and plug in my 100% electric car?

You

whats the catch, it seems to good to be true?

Answer
Yes you can and some might even describe this as a solar electric car system but the "catch" is several compromises you will have to make that may seem unusual to some. First as is generally true with renewable energy you will pay less over the long term but more up front. While you could pay a premium for a battery electric car with 2014 pricing the Mitsubishi imiev will now cost $22,995 http://insideevs.com/2014-mitsubishi-i-miev-reduced-by-6130-now-from-22995-which-includes-fast-charging/ With the federal tax credit this comes to a very reasonable $15,495 for this all battery electric vehicle. It is rated with a 62 mile range but will also come standard with a quick charge plug (20 minutes to 80% charge from CHAdeMO DC quick charge points)

From this point we can model costs based upon some average assumptions. If we use 12500 for the average annual mileage driven this is (12500/365=) about 34.25 miles per day. Depending upon your actual usage you may only have to completely charge the vehicle every other day.

But we can use this number to estimate the daily electricity demand. The 2012 vehicle has an EPA rating of 30 kWh/100 miles (this is like the fuel economy in a petrol vehicle http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=31673 ) We could add in about 5% for charging inefficiency giving us a daily usage of ((34.25/100 x 30) x 1.05=) about 10.79 kWh per day (or about 328.16 kWh per month)

With Solar Panels the insolation (solar energy from the sun) will vary from sunrise to sunset, change with the weather and seasons and be entirely absent at night. And so you will need to oversize the number of panels relative to the strongest days, provide some backup for the weakest days and carefully consider your back up options. Battery backups are OK for variations from day to night but do not work as well for changes in the seasons. For that you need to oversize the panel array or have another back up option like a grid connection. There are many sites that will help to size and cost a solar panel system. Here is one: http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/solar.html#

It may be possible with a grid connected system to sell electricity to the grid during the day at full price and then buy electricity at night to charge the vehicle at 1/2 price. (Time of use metering) In this way the vehicle battery is used to its best advantage which should help to lower the payback period. If we compare this electric transportation system to the cost of petrol avoided then the payback period becomes very favorable.

A battery backup system will add to the initial overall expense where a grid connection is not possible or the independence is valued.

Now in 2011, what's the best hybrid (or full electric) car, out of the BMW/Mercedes/Audi brands? Which model?

Ho Ho Ho

In terms of performances, design, autonomy, environment, fuel mileage ( miles per gallon, or kilometer per liter )etc
And how much is it?

Thank you

Answer
I don't know about hybrids but there no electric cars coming from any of those brands before 2012 and more likely 2014. And as for best hybrid it is a matter of taste and pocketbook. The best place to look is the websites for your brands of interest. If the car is available for sale it will be there with all of the specs.
