The eletric range is great for the city just back and forth to work. If they made an all electric option for about $20K i would go for it %100. Without the gas engine it should be cheaper anyway right? Most people just want an electic car for the work week anyway. Thats when we use the most gas.

Answer
Chevy does have an all electric car on the way, the GM Spark.
*
The Spark will be good for people with more than one car, or for people whose daily driving fits inside the range of an all-electric vehicle.
*
However a PHEV like the Volt or the upcoming Toyota Prius Plug-in is a better choice for one-car families, or for people who need a fuel-efficient car to take occasional long trips.
*
All types of car - hybrid, fuel-efficient gas, plug-in hybrid, or electric - are cost efficient under the right circumstances. There's a spreadsheet on the page below that shows this - play with different driving requirements, and different gas prices, and you will see different types of cars winning cost-of-ownership scenarios. And yes, that even includes the Volt.

In 1905, you could walk in, and purchase any one of a dozen electric cars. Now you can't. Why?

Q. I bought this book about old cars. Between 1905 and 1914, there were about a dozen electric car companies. Now, you can't buy one. Why?

Answer
Batteries could only provide a small range. Even the upcoming Nissan Leaf only gets a hundred miles or so (and that's using lithium ion batteries which are far better than the ones they had back then!)

A tank of oil lets you drive hundreds of miles and it's easy to distribute and put into cars. So it won.
