My family is heavily considering buying an electric car (prius or leaf) but the issue for us is that we have no idea how to charge it (besides public charging stations). We don't have a garage so that's not an option, and we were wondering what alternative methods there were? Thanks!

Answer
Instead of looking at what you don't have examine what you do have. Public chargers are not generally placed in garages. They are suitable for outdoor use. There are also chargers that will allow you to simply park the car over a pad to begin charging.

Do you have a house? Do you have an apartment? Do you have a parking space? If not can you rent one nearby where you can install the equipment? Or you could only use public charging. It may not be as cheap as buying your own equipment but it will be possible. Some dealerships will let you charge at their location at no cost. All of this depends upon your goals for buying electric. Usual ones are social consciousness, expense, or for security (in case you can't get gasoline) If you want to do something there usually is a way. If you don't want to proceed all you will see are insurmountable obstacles.

Some cars like the prius are parallel hybrids. They have electric motors but may not have anyplace to plug in batteries. The batteries are only charged from using gasoline and the electric motor with regenerative braking. If your goal is not to use gasoline this is not the car for you. If your goal is to operate a vehicle that gets better mileage then it may be.

I would not consider a prius, a parallel hybrid, an electric car. Some would. A leaf is a battery electric car. It can only plug in to get its power. Between these two extremes is the Volt, which is mostly a series hybrid. You can plug it in or the gasoline engine will operate like a generator to produce the electricity needed to operate the vehicle.

Are the higher gas prices a grand socialist conspiracy to get all to buy electric cars?

What if the higher gas prices weren't just higher profits for big oil companies but was actually a diabolical plot to force all of us to switch to totally electric cars?

Answer
If it is then it must have been designed to counter the "grand conservative conspiracy" to eliminate all social services, and strive for increasing socialism for the rich and increasing lack of representation for the other 95%.

We can play at the "grand conspiracy" game all day but in the end even identifying an actual and real conspiracy would not solve any problems. Any theory of conspiracy is essentially an excuse why we cannot do or have something. ... Why can't we have gas like it used to be at $.05 per gallon like it once was... well it must be a conspiracy. Why is America getting fat... again it must be a conspiracy. Why aren't we happy, healthy, wise, beautiful, strong or smart... conspiracy too?

This kind of thinking suggests we look at the emotionally appealing reasons rather than actually consider the facts and the numbers. You might be the one person in your area that could presently use an electric car... or perhaps you are the only one who couldn't use one. But if you try to judge based upon what everybody else is thinking or doing you will never know.

An inability or unwillingness to actually consider your unique situation is a diabolical and sad situation because it says that person has surrendered or given up to those suggestions that they are ineffective, weak or uninspired. This must be the very definition of a diabolical influence.
