While watching "Who Killed the Electric Car?" I was jolted into remembering that when I was a kid, a neighbor had an electric car! It was small and different looking, but worked great. He was a big guy, but could fit at least 4 kids in w him, and it went as fast as other vehicles, and I know he took us at least 20 miles round-trip, no problem.

Answer
The technology at the time used heavy lead-acid batteries. A tankful of gasoline plus the tank itself, in an intermediate car, weighs perhaps 90 kg (200 pounds), and would fuel the car for perhaps 600 km (350 miles). Lead-acid batteries of the same weight might give a range of 30 km (20 miles). Electric cars extended the range by carrying as much as a tonne of batteries, adding weight also to the car to support the batteries.
You can still buy some electric cars or car kits such as the "Voltswagen". Mines use electric vehicles, some powered by Edison cells (iron-nickel alkaline) which have low energy density but a looong lifetime.

What is causing grinding noise behind my gas pedal only when the heater is on?

I own a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 with 168,000+ miles, and I started to get a grinding feeling behind the gas pedal but only when the heat is on in the vehicle. Once I turn off the heat there is no grinding and no problem. What could be causing this issue?

Answer
This is the fan rubbing against the shroud that covers it. A very common problem. The blower motor as it is called, is an electric fan that blows the air through the heater core to give heat to the car. It could also be debris such as paper or other item/s that got into the shroud through heater vents. Young kids with crayons can stuff things like this down the vents in the dash. One more yet less likely cause would be the bearing/s at the shaft of the motor can wear and make noise. No matter what, you will have to fix the fan housing to stop it.
