Jr. is ang

I am looking for something he can focus his over abundance of energy on. I am thinking of buying broken vehicles and let him take them apart, learn how to fix them and swap parts until he gets some of them working.
can he work on them with minimum supervision? i mean, he can use hand tools, but no power tools without an adult, so he needs to do most of the work on his own.
should i go with the better adult type, or the cheap ,kids, wal mart type?
battery or fuel?
can a 10 year old use the fuel powered ones without adult supervision?
if you think it is a good idea, are there clubs or on line groups he can join to get help fixing things?
at this point i am not trying to get him to build these with pride, i expect him to use a lot of hammers and duct tape, i just want him to learn to think, create, take several vehicles apart to build one.
he is getting into trouble, getting into things he shouldnt, breaking things. I want to find something where he can start to learn if he takes the time to study it, find the right tools, go online for help, he can build something he will like. then , of course he could get more broken vehicles and make something even better.
right now, everything is hammer, smash. or worse, "can I use the table saw"? " how about the chain saw"?

Answer
I think it would be a great idea. You can get some pretty cheap on ebay. I would get him some good opens and stay away from WalMart, Radio Shack, etc. If you get the cheap kinds they are impossible to find replacement parts. If you go with a hobby store grade RC, the parts are endless. It all depends on how much you want to spend too. Some of the top brands are Traxxas (my fav), HPI, Losi, Kyosho, Associated and Tamiya. If you go to ebay and search "(brand name I mentioned) Roller" you will see a ton of used rolling RC's with no motor or electronics. Basically parts cars. You can get a couple of them for him to work on. That's what I do, fix up old beat up RC's and make them new again. It takes some concentration and patience and no power tools or saws are required. There are some RC tool kits you can get him around $35+ that will fit any RC car. And when he fixes them up, he would have a blast running them, crashing them and fixing them up again. Nitro fuel isn't something to mess with if you don't trust that he can take care of it. The flame is almost invisible and dangerous. Nitro RC's require more maintenance and more skill to put together though. Like rebuilding the motors. So he might like that better, and you or another adult can be in charge of the fuel. Electric is good too, just not as much to learn, in my opinion. Either way, I think he would love doing it and it would require him to focus and concentrate. It does get frustrating but what doesn't, really? Good luck and get involved with him. You might enjoy it as well!
