Why can't they just put a self-charging system on a electric car?

Q. They have alternators on cars now...Why can't they figure out a way to install a charging system on a wheel or something like that to keep the batteries charged on a electric car to get more mileage out of them between charges?

Answer
There are a few tricks, such as regenerative braking, solar panels, or wind alternators that can squeeze out an extra ounce of energy that would have been wasted otherwise. Car companies have been using them in their vehicles to build value, and give bragging rights, but most EV builders do not use them, as they are rarely cost effective.

Electric cars will gain greater range in the future as these tricks (but especially battery technology) improve. Despite what news reporters say, there is no miracle technology around the corner.

If we all have Electric cars, how do we get the power to run them?

Q. I understand the need to reduce the use of fossil fuels in vehicles. However if we are to have alternate fuels and electric cars how do we produce enough energy to commute? Coal produces more emmissions as a percentage of world emmisions, Nuclear power produces waste you have to secure store and watch over for hundreds of thousands of years, solar doesn't give us enough power, and Bio Feuls are not economically efficient enough to support the amount of vehicles. Where do we get the energy from? Are the days of the affordable personal vehicle drawing to a close?

Answer
And so the dilemma gos...Power is not free.

Part of the benefit of electric cars or non polluting vehicles is the degree of control over emissions. Let me explain:

Consider that there is (for example) 1 million cars in a particular urban area. 40 years ago that number released pollutant gases, gasoline and crankcase fumes...lets measure the value at "1" for each car, meaning 1,000,000 units of pollution were released . The same number of cars today releases perhaps 1/2 of that. What if that could be eliminated and the pollution is XERO from these one million sources? As you not the tradeoff is that more electric plants are needed and they pollute also.

BUT, the difference is that the pollution from a single source is much easier to choose, monitor and control than 1 million sources. It could be augmented by solar and wind, which are unrliable, but available...and hydro and nuclearare still a viable sources.
I am more tolerant of the waste problem of nuclear, since we have not fully utilize our waste disposal options in salt domes and desert places. In a way, we have collected and concentrated radioactive sources, and burying it is just returning it to nature where we got it

Even coal, natural gas plants give us a single point of pollution which we can focus our efforts on. Now that we have substancially reduced flue ash, surfur dioxide and Nitrous Oxide (acid rains) the problem seems to be CO2, It is much easier to forcus resources to reduce this in afew places than try to do it on 1 million cars.

Summary: It is the right direction...
