Want a clear indication of President Barack Obamaâs priorities? Take a look at the spending decisions emerging from his Administration today. In the battle between $40,000 dollar-electric-car-buying yuppies and at-risk kids in the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program, rich people won, and they have President Obama to thank for it.

The Winners:

Today, President Obama put the taxpayersâ money where his allegiances lie. The Daily Caller reports that the White House intends to increase taxpayer-funded subsidies for those who purchase new-technology vehicles, including the Chevy Volt, to $10,000 per buyer, up from $7,500.

In case you havenât been shopping for a Volt â and odds are, you havenât â the vehicle carries a hefty $41,000 price tag. So what kind of person benefits from that tax credit? General Motors says the average income of a Volt buyer is $175,000 per year. And according to Bill Visnic, senior editor for Edmunds.com, âThe Volt appeals to an affluent, progressive demographic.â In other words: rich yuppies.

The Daily Caller reports that the subsidy âwould cost taxpayers $100 million each year if it is approved by Congress, presuming only 10,000 new-technology autos are sold each year.â And if the President reaches his goal of putting 1 million of those kinds of cars on the road by 2015, the subsidy could cost $10 billion.

Why is the subsidy necessary? Itâs no big mystery. Despite the slick marketing, high-gas mileage, and environmentally friendly cachet that comes along with them, the cars just arenât selling. In January, General Motors sold 603 Volts â almost twice as many as in January 2010, but less than half of its total sales in December. And in 2011, GM missed its projected sales volume for the vehicle, shipping 7,671 of the vehicles â well short of its target of 10,000.

Automakers, of course, have a lot riding on the vehicles â but so does President Obama. His Administration has banked heavily on the vehicles being an important part of his energy policy and the ânew green economy.â That strategy, though, is failing. No matter how much the President wants consumers to buy electric cars, most consumers donât want them. But whether they like it or not, those consumers are subsidizing the buyers who do.

The Losers:

While the rich are riding in their taxpayer-subsidized electric cars, the losers in President Obamaâs America are at-risk kids languishing in under-performing schools in Washington, D.C. As part of his FY 2013 budget, President Obama eliminates funding for the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which throws a school choice lifeline to children who would otherwise be left hopeless in Washingtonâs public school system.

Thanks to the program, more than 1,600 low-income children in the nationâs Capital are using vouchers this school year to attend a school that they choose. The program has been a stunning success. Heritageâs Lindsey Burke writes:

According to federally-mandated evaluations of the program, student achievement has increased, and graduation rates of voucher students have increased significantly. While graduation rates in D.C. Public Schools hover around 55 percent, students who used a voucher to attend private school had a 91 percent graduation rate.
How much does this kind of success cost? A mere $8,000 per student, compared to the estimated $18,000 spent per child by D.C. Public Schools.

To be clear: $10,000 in taxpayer funds to subsidize the purchase of an electric car versus $8,000 to give a child a choice in education. We know what the President chose. Which would you pick?

I was considering a new sports car recently so I test drove the 2013 FR-S, 2013 MX-5 Club Sport, 07 350z, Mazda RX-8, 05 Evo and STI, and the 2012 Mazdaspeed 3. I'm still in the process of testing other cars. I still have the Focus ST and VW GTI set in my sights to try out.

Here is my review of the FR-S. The electric steering surprisingly has some feel to it and it is sharp. The power is more than enough for daily driving and passing and it still feels quick. At 5'11", my head hit the rear glass window and my toes had no room to move when put under the front seat. My friend who is 5'9" fit more comfortably in the back, but his hair still touched the rear window. If you drive over a bump, his head would hit. Realistically, your passengers that sit in the back should be 5'7" or less in height.

The interior was well laid out and very ergonomic. It was obviously cheap, but designed well.

Here was one of my biggest problems. The trunk space. The width and length was fine. And the back seats fold down to create a larger trunk but the issue was the height of the trunk. You can barely fit a water bottle standing up in the trunk. I'm not even sure if a heavily packed school back would fit. A gallon of milk standing up will probably not fit unless you lay the milk sideways.

The other huge problem I had with it was the clutch in the manual transmission version. The clutch is extremely light. It is as if it does not even exist when you are pushing down on it. I hate that there is no feedback in it. It takes away from the driving experience.

The other issue was the price. It is listed around $24,600. However, dealerships are selling them for much higher prices because of the demand. The Toyota dealership I went to was asking $36,000 for the FR-S I drove. They claimed to sell one of the first ones they got for $41,000 a few months back. There is no wiggle room or haggling allowed on these cars.

Being a Toyobaru, I expect it to be a very reliable car with a good resale value and low maintenance costs. Being RWD, you cannot drive it in snow and it is slippery in rain. Toyota and Subaru made it worse by putting skinny Prius tires on the FR-S, making it slippery even on dry pavement.

Overall it is a good car for a single person with no kids and no need for a large trunk.

The best car I have test driven so far was the Mazda MX-5 Club by far. Again, it is for a single person. And the trunk is just as small as the FR-S'. But it was just so much fun to drive. I had a smile on my face during the entire test drive. And that engine loves to rev high. It is very peppy.

I have changed the battery twice on my car, both walmart brand, both batteries have died in less than a week, it's the same size and the one recommended for the car, yet I don't know what's going on.

Someone told me I had to get the battery registered at a BMW dealer, whatever that means......

Please help me out, wife and kids have been stranded twice.

I had the same problem with my BMW Z3, turned out it was the electric seats draining the battery (switch stuck). Whilst searching for a solution I heard of trunk lights that don't go out-fans that don't go off etc on many BMW models. Have a look around your car and see if anything is out of the ordinary. It is not the battery it will be something in the car that is not operating properly-if you can't find it yourself get it down to a dealer/garage.

You want to get to 215-220 stick a chip and an electric fan "turbo in" that will do it. Keep in mind the heads and head gaskets are weak and short lived with the 2.8 of your generation as with most all "newer" BMW engines. Adding "power" to the engine will shorten its life expectancy considerably.

LOL getting ahead of the game... The guys who are getting ahead of the game are the ones who accept that REAL Bmws and what they stood for (excellent engineering*) are way old. Bacically if the cars body platform starts with a E2? its a REAL BMW if its a E3 and E4 its new bad engineered short lived junk. (few exceptions)

I watched the documentary "Who killed the electric car" the other day. I'm not sure what really happened, nor do I care about much except the fact that I really really want an electric car. Do they even sell a single one anymore?
The reason I want one isn't only because of the environment or the outstanding gas prices, it's because I feel that it's the 21st century and we have this new technology, yet we spend all of our efforts on an already ancient energy source when we could already go electric! I hate the crap people spew out that "gas gives people jobs" and nonsense like that. It's called adapting to change and increasing efficiency. Fossil fuels and petroleum aren't efficient anymore

They are available today - in fact, I already drive one - there are lots of choices for electric cars, and more on the way. Electric vehicles can have performance as good or better than gas-powered cars, and they cost a lot less to operate (only a penny or two per mile.) Why don't we all know about them? Same thing they did for the EV-1... petition government to keep oil standards low, wage a media war against them as being weak, unsafe, bad for business, and even un-American.

(Or say stupid stuff like Greed above - especially when the energy that it does take to charge a car is a fraction of the amount of energy that goes into an automotive gas combustion engine for the same amount of mileage... Not to mention that even with the US's "dirty" power grid, electric car's secondary emissions would still be less then half of of the total emissions by a conventional US gasoline auto.

But then again, which industry would have the most to lose if the US did upgrade our power grids??? So, who can we expect to put up obstacles to that as well?)

i go out racing last night the only thing i could beat was a few other mustangs, everything with a small block chevy or mopar raped me. my friends keep telling me to get a ls1 car like a camaro or corvette but i love my blue oval. what can i do without breaking the bank to get a leg up on these guys

i got beat by a 99% stock 98 camaro with only a EGR block off and axle back exhaust from a 30 roll

before anyone laughs about the electic supercharger i bought it originally as a gag.. then on a dyno day we messed around with it.. we ran the vehicle with a baseline of 310hp to the rear wheels, if we removed the intake tube from throttle body it made 318hp to the rear wheels, adding the e-charger without it being on and with the filter it made 308hp to the rear wheels, turning the echarger on it made 321hp to the rear wheels, doing the same but removing everything infront of it we made 325hp to the rear wheels.. so a successful gain of 11hp to the rear wheels.. so it's not like it adds boost it just helps clear the flow of air after the filter.. i've since removed to toggle switch and it runs whever the car is on.. i've driven from atlanta to dallas fort worth with it on the whole way no problems at all

It's "kids" like yourself racing on the streets (don't care if it's a long straightaway in the countryside) that get cops after guys like us that just want to take our musclecars out for a cruise and a lot of cops looking for any reason to pull us over. Take your go-cart to the track and quit street racing. Until then nobody should be helping you get faster.

Hello, I would like to have an idea to assess how much will be the best offer, living decently and at least to have savings in Edinburgh, Scotland. I plan to take my wife and 2 kids with me.
I read that tax will be around 20%.
Can someone please help me lay out as follows? On a monthly basis.
Groceries, school bus, transportation (Bus), Utilities(water,electricity,etc.) , Education ( elementary and pre school), Gasoline, health care, dining out like 2x a month and any other cost I am not aware of in Edinburgh?
I know it is quite detailed, sorry.

I lived in Edinburgh. But only as a university student so my take on things will be slightly biased.

VAT (value added tax): 20% on most goods and services -- https://www.gov.uk/vat-rates
Groceries: I spent about 30 a week on myself. I do not eat meat or dairy but do eat a lot of fruit and fresh vegetables. So that would be 120 a week for one person.
School Bus: If you are from the states the school bus system is not the same. Kids are expected to make their own way to school by walking, driving, or taking the public bus. The bus each way is 70p for children.
Bus: You can buy one way fair for an adult for 1.50. A day ticket for 3.50. A week's unlimited pass for 17 (13 for uni student and 9 for children). A month's unlimited for 51 (40, 39). A year's for 612 (468,324). more information at: http://lothianbuses.com/timetables-tickets-maps/fares-and-tickets
Utilities: I was a student so I did not have to pay for water or council tax. but in a three person flat the gas/electric was about 60 pounds a month total (and their was a set payment. you you obviously used less in the summer and more than that amount in the winter but it evened out in the end).
education: free school and university-> (for those living in scotland for 4+ years). private schooling available. Most public and all private schools wear a uniform.

eating out: I was a student so i obviously ate cheap. But I would say a main at an average restaurant (not a pub meal) would be 15-20 pounds and a fiver for a drink. So one main, one appetizer, one drink each for two people would be about 65 pounds.

How can I make a homemade electric generator to power my house?

I was thinking about buying used car batteries from the junk yard and connecting them with jumper cables then testing the connected batteries with a battery tester to see how many volts it has. I havent tried this yet so I dont know if it will work do you guys have any idea on how to make a generator so I wont have to pay for power

To make an electrical generator, you need to have a length of wound copper wire rotating inside a magnetic field (refer to elementary physics).

Gasoline/diesel/etc. generators run basically like your car's engine, but instead of turning wheels, it uses the motion to rotate the wire inside the magnetic field, producing electricity. Remember, energy can't be created or destroyed. The chemical potential energy in your combustible fuel is being converted to kinetic energy, which is being converted into electrical energy.

A wind turbine is more "free" in that you don't have to go out and buy drums of oil to make your electricity. But it works on the same principle, but in this case, it's the turbine blades catching the wind that spins the copper loop, creating electricity.

As far as your batteries go, you may be able to store it there, but to charge any battery, from AA to car, you need the correct circuit and voltage, or nothing will happen. So you probably can't use your batteries. But if you can, all that you an do is store the potential energy there, and use it at a later time.

But if you just want to play with making a generator, try this:

First, you need to choose the energy source that you want to convert into electricity. You can use a stationary bicycle, a water wheel, wind turbine, a bored child willing to do some menial work on a set of gears, or virtually anything else with a rotating axle. You do have to choose the source, because as I said - you can't get energy from nothing.

Take that copper wire that I talked about, and make that loop that I also talked about, but leave two ends free (you need that to form the electric circuit). The larger the number of turns in the loop, the more electricity you can generate for the same amount of rotation. Kind of like an electric pulley system, to use a bad analogy.

Take your loop, and connect it to your energy source. You need to be able to rotate the loop end-over-end, without twisting the two connecting wires about each other, because if they do, you'll get a short circuit, and boom, it's done. One way to successfully accomplish this is to connect one wire to the rotating axle and the other wire to a conducting "brush" that maintains contact with a second conductor.

Make sure that you've sufficiently supported the loop so that it's out of the way of any moving parts of the energy source (such as your legs and the pedals if you pay a seven year old to ride a bicycle that never goes anywhere - give them one of those hand-held video games, they'll never notice). To make sure that you get this right, you may need to reinforce your loop with plastic or another light (but sturdy) material.

Grab some magnets (permanent magnets), and arrange them around the loop so that the loop can rotate freely between them. Take care to ensure that you arrange the magnets to maximize the field strength. One good and simple method is to make the south end of one magnet face the north end of another.

Stick the two conductors on your energy source to a battery, circuit, chainsaw, whatever it is that you want to drive. Again, you need to keep your wires separate to avoid a short circuit, so you'll need to use some kind of brush mechanism again, or whatever more clever thing that you can come up with that I haven't considered.

Poke the kid and get him to start peddling, or release your turbine to the wind, whatever you want. The amount of energy that you get from your turbine will depend on the efficiency of its construction, materials used, and how much mechanical energy us put in to drive it and spin the turbine itself (a faster peddling kid will give you more electricity than a slower one).

Run with it. A home-built turbine is unlikely to provide your house with any really useful power, unless you've really taken some time, money, and thought into it (which is possible). But you might run some simple things from your standard knock-off generator, such as perhaps basement lighting, that kind of thing.

The Mitsubishi I with its 16kWh battery (same size as the Volt) would be less.

The Leaf with its 24 kWh battery would be more. One figure I have seen quoted was $9000, but that was over a year ago from a UK publication. Nissan is about to open a battery factory in Tennessee which should lower the price. The significance of this number is that is was below the $400/kWh that was often quoted as the dividing line between what would be economical and what would not be. (numbers sometimes quoted for for replacing individual faulty cells are inflated as they include all the labor for removing, repairing and replacing the battery pack and cannot be multiplied to reach a total figure)

The Tesla roadster, high performance, 53 kWh battery of over 5000 cells is quoted at about $36000.

Model or Toy electric cars might be run on a "D" cell for considerably less as would older electric cars or "golf" carts that might be using lead acid batteries.

None of these numbers consider that at the "end of its useful life" for a modern EV (8 year 100,000 mile warranty is typical) the battery continues to support about 70 o 80% of its like new capacity. It is widely speculated that these batteries are not ready to be recycled for materials but that they will find a useful second life as stationary backup batteries for at least another 5 to 10 years. There is a potential resale market that is not yet established. This could be a deduction from the cost of a new automobile battery. On a pro rated basis if a new battery was $400 per kWh and could be resold at 70% ($280) then a new battery would only cost the vehicle owner the balance of $120 / kWh or (24 x 120) $2880 for a new Leaf battery. Profit taking and advances in technology makes it unlikely that vehicle owner will fully realize this potential...

So what do you consider a "general" estimate. ... Less than $400 / kWh might be a general reasonable figure for now.

A rather un-sexy answer to your question is to see where electric vehicles have already made sense both economically and environmentally. The NYC subway system was started in the late 1800's and quickly began to be electrified. In a closed environment the ICE (internal combustion engin) is so bad environmentally it is used as a method of suicide. For the long term economics of transportation electric vehicles are better every time. They require a larger capital investment but last far longer, with much less maintenance and fuel costs (compare the useful life of of buss es to electric trains.)

Some governments however wish to make capital expenditures appear small. They will choose ICE vehicles as being "cheaper" because it is much easier not to focus on the long term costs.

We live in a closed ecosystem that is like a subway tunnel. We are killing ourselves with levels of harmful and dangerous gasses in our atmosphere that are rising. It is not possible to say that the ICE vehicle is not harmful. It is only possible to say the harm has not yet overwhelmed us. A more important question is if it makes sense to continue to ignore the harm ICE vehicles cause to our quality and potential duration of life.

Economics seem to be less of a social issue. Electric vehicles operate more smoothly. The drivetrain can have less than 5 moving parts. They are extremely economical to operate and eventually the price will come down as it has for every other electronic device. The electric vehicle is a game changer. It may last so long that you could pass it on to your grandchildren. You might buy one for life rather than one every 5 years. If you add up the depreciation you pay in the course of a lifetime you could easily justify the cost of an electric car today. Someday credit applications may even ask if you own an electric car or an ICE vehicle.

In the event of an oil shortfall as predicted by the theory of peak oil and now the US military, electric vehicles may be the only ones not affectioned by some method of rationing. Even owners of petrochemical vehicles should therefore be encouraging others to buy electric vehicles as it leaves more oil for them.

So electric vehicles have and will make sense economically, environmentally, strategically, socially and even just for others to preserve your oil supplies.

You need to know a bit more about such vehicles. There are battery electric cars like the Mitsubishi I MiEV, the Nissan Leaf and Tesla vehicles, the roadster, and the new model S. And then there are hybrids that can never be plugged in like most Toyota Prius, and your 2012 Honda CR-Z ( 1 ) and then there are cars that can be plugged in or use gasoline.

Only the battery electrics allow and require a different approach to charging the vehicle.2

We run a daycare, and have all age kids from 6 weeks - 8 years old. The kids are always making messes and throughing their toys on the floor, and putting them in thier mouth.

Does any one have tips on keeping things clean and sanitized for the kids?

Hard toys can either be thrown into the dishwasher or take a spray bottle and put Listerine mouth wash in it and spray it on the toy, hit it with a brush (electric tooth brushes work great) & wipe off with a clean towel.

make a "home" for every toy & put a picture of that toy or type of toy on its home (like a clear plastic bin on a shelf with a picture of a car or lego on it, dolly shelf with a picture of a doll on it, dress up box with a dress picture, etc.)

A few times a day do the "thirty second tidy time" or "I Spy" where the kids clean up with you or as part of a game.

A good steam cleaner is a MUST.

That is really hard to even determine, because it really has to do with HOW the child is raised. How many siblings they have.

I have 6 children and am extrememly FRUGAL. I mean I do NOT buy anything unless it is on sale. And I obviously spend less money per child now then I did when I had just one child.

I am gonna guesstimate on how much it takes for ONE of my children to get raised in a year. I will NOT include housing, electric, car. Because I had all that stuff before I had kids and that to me shouldn't be included.

Ok, I figured about 2500 dollars per child I spend a year. That includes clothes, food, school supplies, school accessories(field trips, yearbooks etc.). I know that doesn't sound like a lot. But that is for a young child, they really don't eat that much and like I said I am a sale shopper. Now if I included housing, electric, and car payment divided by 8, which is our household size I would have to add 2100.00 per year.

For $20.00 you can't expect to get much more out of the car. It's not really built for speed at that price. Basically, this is a kids toy. There is a huge difference between remote control cars for kids and remote control cars for adults. The complexities of the cars have a very wide gap. Kids cars will run on just a few AA batteries. RC cars for adults feature full miniature engines. Lots of the popular motor kits run on fuel such as gasoline or nitro. Others run on large battery packs that are essentially beefed up versions of kids toys. These cars require just as much maintenance as a real car, since they have all of the same components (plus all of the radio transmitting gear!) to deal with.

So you may want to save up and get your moneys worth by opting for petrol, nitro or electric models. The fastest engine choice that you can find is a nitro engine. Nitromethane is an alternative to regular gasoline, and runs much better for RC cars. It is usually heavier, and therefore more cumbersome on the handling of the car. However, if you are going to be on a fairly straightforward and tame race course, it is a great choice and will provide a huge speed. The only down side is that nitro engines are known for wearing down faster, and breaking at a higher rate. If you use a nitro engine frequently, you can almost expect it to break after intense usage. It is a good idea to have an electric engine that you can swap it out with when the need arises.

The other parts of the car are equally important when you are aiming for absolute fastness. If you are you going all-out on a project, you should expect to spend quite a bit on components like wheels and axels. Usually you want to get wheels that are extremely firm and light. If you have the opportunity to go out to a hobby store and test out a few different components, you will be able to decide exactly what you want based on experiencing it first-hand. This is the best way to shop for anything, and the same goes for remote control cars. Since the parts are usually highly swappable, you can directly compare one with another by trying them in quick succession.

If you arenât a very technically inclined person, the thought of picking all of these parts might not sound very fun. However, you might not have to go through this process. It is possible to buy kits that include all top of the line parts, and are quite easy to assemble. With these you wonât get the high level of customization that you would get out of building a regular home-made car. You have to start by answering the question, "What do I need to get out of the vehicle?"

If your primary use is just to put around town like take the kids to school, run down to the grocery store, commute the 5 miles to work you can get way with a Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) or some times called Low speed Electric Vehicle (LEV). The cars are limited by law to 25 MPH (35 MPH in some states) but they recharge from any outlet you can plug your cell phone in.

If you need to take to the highway your options become severely limited. Currently the only highway speed EV available to the public is the Tesla Roadster at $120,000. Everybody else "is working on it and will be ready by 2010".

You don't need a 300 MPC (miles per charge) electric car. When you get home after a hard days work, you plug in the car, eat dinner go to bed. In the morning you get up, get dressed, unplug the car and leave every day with a full load of "fuel". Two minor additions to the usual routine and you've made the world a little better. A gas car doesn't self fill at night an since you don't want to visit the gas station on a daily basis 300 miles is a light range requirement.

The length of the charge time at night is irrelevant. I'm asleep so what difference does it make if it takes 1 hour or 6. Think how many hours a day is your car actually being used out of 24? The rest of the time it is just sitting, waiting for you to use it.

As for plugging it in everyday, don't you plug in your cell phone every day to charge it? An EV is the same deal, put the car in its parking place, hop out plug the cord in, go in and eat dinner. The rest is automatic and baring some kind of minor catastrophe your car is ready to go in the morning. You can also plug in wherever you stop, called opportunity charging, if your vehicle has a 110 volt charger. Since 80% of people put less than 40 miles on their car on a daily basis a 50 mile range isn't an inconvenience.

Vis-a-vis bad reviews, I keep giving the Eden Pure (and their similar knock-offs) line of heaters the lousiest reviews I can, but they're still around, too. There's a small, hard core of people who think the things are made of unicorn horns, and the rest of us recognize they're actually unicorn farts. But it's the horny ones that buy them, so that keeps Eden Pure in business.

Before you start shopping for solar power systems, you need to establish how much power you need. Add up the amperages of all the things that are likely to run at the same time, multiply that number by how many hours per 24-hour day they will run, and that's how many amp-hours you need. Multiply that number by how many volts each item runs on, and that's how many watt-hours you need.

Now we can start talking about system capacity.

If you have an electric water heater, drop that desire right now. You'll be bleeding money from the jugular before you get a big enough system to run a water heater.

If you have a heat pump or electric resistance heat OF ANY SIZE, drop that desire right now. Refer back to what I said about the water heater. Converting sunlight into electricity, into chemical electrical potential (battery-stored electricity), back into heat is a Get-Poor-Fast scheme. You'd do much better to design and build a solar heat collector with storage capacity. That would also provide hot water, or at least warm water that didn't need much heating. Your energy gathering efficiency even from halfwitted homebrew will far outstrip the efficiency of even the very best, lab-results-only photovoltaic (solar electric) system. NOTE: it is super easy to do way better than "halfwitted homebrew," even a car is a very effective flat plate solar collector. Just park it in the sun.

For cooking or water purifying, you're better off to have a couple of gas burners and a 20-lb propane tank. If you never need it, no problem. But when you do need it, 20 pounds of propane gets a lot done, and you can take sponge baths with water heated on the burner. The whole time you're not using it, it just sits there, waiting until needed. That's tough to beat.

A Mr. Heater portable propane heater can do most of your heating if you don't mind everybody in the house all staying in the room with it. That would be best, it would maximize the good of the heater's output.

Considering your dad's need for a nebulizer, maybe a direct vent wall heater would be a better choice. They're out there that can run on propane and again, if you never need it, the fuel just sits there, waiting. No problem. A 20 pound tank of propane will run a 7500 btu heater (admittedly that's not a lot, but if you're in a mild climate it may be plenty, especially with all the house's tenants all in one room staying warm) for more than two days nonstop. Conserve the heater for running mostly at night when it's coldest and you can stretch that out pretty far.

I think your best setup would be this:

A small, modest solar system to provide constant power for your dad's nebulizer and a couple of dedicated, low-amperage outlets for recharging communication and entertainment devices (kids can't live without their games anymore. Suggestion: wean them off those things and onto books, which work even when the batteries die). That will be very affordable.

Then invest in a couple of burners and a couple of tanks of fuel. 20 pounds of propane cooks a LOT of meals.

Then invest in the purchase and installation of a single direct vent wall heater. Purchase another tank of fuel.

That's it. You're ready for the apocalypse. Skip water heating for the whole house, it's wasteful in this paradigm. If you have a solar heating system you won't need to worry about it.

It depends upon how it is done and who you ask. Our electric grid is not like a fuel pump. Fuel is produced according to demand. It can be produced 24/7 as it is in many refineries and the capacity of the refineries only have to match the total consumption.

It has not been economical to store our grid electricity. Consumption varies throughout the day. The peak consumption is typically from around 10 am up to around 9 pm. We have to have enough power to supply this peak demand and the number of power plants and their capacity is then sized to the peak load. This leaves a lot of unused capacity in the off peak hours.

If we were to charge electric vehicles in the off peak times estimates of our capacity to power a percentage of our present fleet with our existing power plants range from:

Yes, I would make the trade! There is technology available NOW to make an electric car run up to 300+ miles on one charge. Why is it that an oil company owns the company that makes the batteries? Afraid of the competition?

We are talking about breaking our dependency on foreign oil, yet every year fuel milage on new vehicles BS. How is it that back in the late 70s, early 80s fuel efficiency increased by leaps and bounds, but now, it jumps by 2 mpg, and auto makers expect a technological award.

Auto makers and oil companies CRUSHED the first electric car since the beginning of the LAST century. There were electric cars and trucks in large numbers running on 19th century technology, yet here we are in the 21st century dealing with global warming, high butt gas prices, SMOG, etc, but we can't make a totally electric vehicle to satisfy US consumers? I don't think so!!!

The hydrogen car is not a future dream, it's a nightmare. Nothing about it is economical. If you think the electric car is bad, the hydrogen car is multiple times worse.

As much as it costs these days to own and operate a vehicle, anything other than gas powered will cost more to purchase, but in the long run will cost less to operate.

It's sad, I guess the US will have to wait for a foreign auto maker to come in and put that last nail in the coffin before they create a vehicle that the people want. Oh, people DO want an electric car, air car.....anything that will run on something other than gas, but won't do as much harm to the environment. Not that many people want Hummers, but GM produced them. I wil bet my dollar to anyone's penny that more people would be interested in a vehicle that runs off of the means mentioned than the number of Hummers H1 sold. US automakers are getting beat as though they stole something by Toyota. When will they wake up? I guess with 'oil men' in the white house, it will have to be under another president to encourage and FUND research for alternative fuels.....other than hydrogen.

I'm 19, a student at BSU, and I don't come from money at all... everything that I own personally can fit in the cab of my gma's s10 pickup, and my mom has little more than I do. I'm just curious how people manage to pay for everything in their life... college, marriage, food, home(mortgage or rent), cars, gas, car insurance, health insurance, kids, phones, clothes, children's health insurance, electric.... it just seems like so much.

Its why our economy runs on debt. When I first started out in college everything I owned could fit into my vehicle too. I lived inside my car for a little while trying to make everything work. My family struggles just to pay some basic stuff and they discouraged me from going to college because of that financial burden I would be taking on. It is a burden sometimes. But worth it. I had to give up some of the essentials that are considered a luxury on my budget.

I havent gone to the doctor or dentist in way too long. Sometimes I get to a clinic when I get really bad. I gave up my car and ride public transportation. I have taken out loans and applied for many scholarships (and get rejected as well). Ive worked two jobs before. Lived in a two bedroom apartment with six people and ate Ramen noodle. I went part-time in college taking a few credits here and there while I worked full-time. It is taking me six years to do what peers did in four. But, Im doing it on my own the best I can with the resources I have.

I saved and worked. Finally at 24 got some extra help from financial aid now that Im considered "independent". I have a nice place now thats small but a good fit for me. Its strange to have real furniture but its a result of spending so much time working. Still dont have a car or insurance but slowly Im getting there.

Take heart that most people need help. They will get it from family if they can. Otherwise I suggest going to church to get help with food boxes now and then and remain humble. Its hard to see others "live it up" when you struggle but you can only focus on what you have.

Buy him a pocketbike. He will be the coolest kid on the streets with one of those. They sell gas which are fast ones for about $300 and electric ones which are a bit slower but still fast for about the same price. Try ebay or check if there is a local store that sells these.

when I was a kid in the fifties there were electric milk cars /floats delivering lots of crates of milk, to the houses in the city.up the hills and down.they were powered with ordinary car batteries.they had a lot of weight on them, but they had no problem going.quiet and no pollution.where are they today?electric cars are the future, and I do not see why our government can't invest in this technology and set up factories to produce and sell to the world before some other western country does.Just because we might be at the forefront of some other leading technologies does'nt mean we have to stop there, does it?

With the President being an 'oil man', you can pretty much hang up the prospects of him pouring any money into electric car technology. If he were interested, he would have at least asked Congress to allocate funds in the last 6.5 years. Maybe the next President has the ability to see farther than 6 months into the future and invest for our future. If nothing else, our future cleaner air and less dependance on foreign oil.

I know what you are saying about electric vehicles yester-century. There were electric vehicles around when the combustion engine came along. Thanks to the oil companies, they died.....probably a painful death. The resurrection is a slow and agonizing process, but it IS happening!!

In response to Nata T, that's such a common misconception it's getting ridiculous. Look at California, where only 16.6% of the state's electricity comes from Coal. Compare that to something like Ohio, where that figure is more like 60%. So it all depends on where you live.

Plus, with all the government regulations on renewable energy sources, those numbers will only fall because of increased construction of renewable sources of electricity (solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, tide, wave, hydro, etc).

As for the original question... Grab a snickers, it'll be a while. With the big three struggling to make a buck, vying for your tax money so that they can give their cars away at 0 profit and just produce more of the same crap that nobody wants, it definitely won't come from the big three. Plus other interests are at stake that will slow any attempt at changing the automobile infrastructure. Exxon/Mobil, Chevron, Conoco Phillips, etc.

We are constantly told that the mass produced electric car will soon be with us and many people argue that this means zero pollution.
Clearly these people overlook the fact that as most of our electricity comes from burning fossil fuel we are merely moving the pollution from the actual vehicle to the power station.
Has anybody actually carried out any research into how environmentally friendly electric cars are when all factors are taken into consideration? I do not know the answer but my instant gut reaction is that electric cars are probably worse polluters that petrol or diesel cars; it must be less efficient to convert oil into electricity and send it round the country to charge batteries for cars than simply burning it within the vehicle.

The answer really only depends on the GGE mileage of a given electric vehicle. On average electric plants emit 1.341 lbm CO2/kWh. Since the GGE is 36.3kWh, a GGE of electricity would emit 40.66 lbm CO2. This is in comparison to 19.6 lbm CO2/gal for gasoline. Divide this by the average mileage of the gasoline cars (20.8) and you get 0.94 lbm CO2/mile. Now to do better than this an electric car would need to go more than 43.4 miles on a GGE. Some quick research turned up that most vehicles did do better than this, except the Ford Ranger EV at 39 MPGGE.

That's the whole point of hybrids and electrics. It's easy to make an electric vehicles fast and powerful, just difficult for it to have range. The first cars to reach 60mph were electric cars. You could easily put in a thousand horsepower electric motor into a car but the batteries would be depleted very quickly. We've been able to make gas cars with 50mpg plus back in 1982 which is still better than what the modern hybrids get but they lacked speed and power, the addition of an electric motor making the efficient cars hybrids is what gives the power and performance that the consumer wants.

We really don't need hybrids and electric cars. We don't even need so many cars. If we were willing to accept the lackluster performance of the 1982 econoboxes then why enhance the performance with an electric motor? If we want the flexibility to change the fuel source from fossil to something clean like solar by using electric vehicles then why don't we just synthesize gasoline from CO2 and H2O with solar power? Synthesized fuels could even be carbon negative whilst an electric vehicle with solar generated electricity is at best carbon neutral

Ultimately, Hybrid and electric will be seen for what they are, marketing to create an additional market niche for new cars just like model years, tail fins, station wagons, minivans, SUV's and Flex Fuel cars. Measures that would actually make a difference such as changing how we make the gasoline just doesn't make the auto manufacturers any money.

Unless you can weld your going to have to buy the frame already made, and if you do that you might as well just buy the entire go-kart. Heres a thought you may or may not want to explore, find one of them larger kids power wheels, many people throw them out once the battery is dead. Do a little cutting and modify it how you want, splice in a few extra batteries for more power, toss some old bike tire rubber around the wheels, now your rocking a stylish lil fast cart. Sure its plastic lol, but for around 50 bucks for batteries and a little searching thru craigslist, you can have some fun with it.

i need help finding an old show in korea where these kids race little hand sized cars that run on small motors. They used to sell them in korea. Its not an RC car, you just turn the car on with a switch and the car runs on a fixed track with small wheels in the front bumper so it will help make turns.
And the kids will rollerblade next to the cars!
