Is there some sort of catastrophe that could somehow mess up electric magnetic fields and make it so that helicopters, airplanes, and other air vehicles cannot actually fly properly?
Scientifically, could that even happen? Just wondering.
What about ground vehicles, like cars and motorcycles, I'm not sure how this would happen... but could it happen?
Answer
A high altitude atomic explosion will generate an electromagnetic pulse or EMP that will shower a large area below it. It has been estimated that two or three such explosions could blanket the US.
This scenario was the basis for the fictional book "One Second After" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Second_After After the book was released there has been discussion suggesting that the effects of an EMP may not be as dramatic as offered in the book.
Another source for an EMP is a solar flare. A particularly large one happened in 1859 known as the Carrington event. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/aisha-gani/are-we-prepared-for-a-sup_b_1328072.html
Volcanic activity can also promote lightning which can cause a more localized EMP event.
There are other man made EMP devices. http://syzygyastro.hubpages.com/hub/Wave-Guided-EMP-Beam
The current TV program "Revolution" proposed a lack of electricity due to self replicating nano particles in the air. This is perhaps a bit more fanciful. http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/life/tv/story/2012/09/17/revolution-somber-premise-shows-its-promise/57791716/1

The Electric Car , a dream?
James Wrig
Many of the dealerships are sold out of the leaf, what can we do to get these cars built faster? could building Electric cars in Britain save it from bankruptcy? and get British people working more instaed of letting immigrants take most of the production work??
Answer
Electric cars are a dream and a vision of the future without polluting vehicles that rely on foreign oil for their power. They are a dream of quiet, clean and affordable transportation. They are the dream that will allow us to electrify roadways and manage traffic flow for many more vehicles than we can have on our present roadways.1
Nissan, the owners of the Leaf, are making the dream a reality by building factories in the US (Smyrna in Tennessee) and the UK (Sunderland) that are expected to open in 2012. These factories along with the plant at Oppama in Japan will increase production to meet the existing and future demand.2
The amount of production work being taken by "immigrants" is perhaps another issue best taken up elsewhere. If we go back far enough most of us came from somewhere else.
