Are electric cars available to the public?

I watched the documentary "Who killed the electric car" the other day. I'm not sure what really happened, nor do I care about much except the fact that I really really want an electric car. Do they even sell a single one anymore?
The reason I want one isn't only because of the environment or the outstanding gas prices, it's because I feel that it's the 21st century and we have this new technology, yet we spend all of our efforts on an already ancient energy source when we could already go electric! I hate the crap people spew out that "gas gives people jobs" and nonsense like that. It's called adapting to change and increasing efficiency. Fossil fuels and petroleum aren't efficient anymore

They are available today - in fact, I already drive one - there are lots of choices for electric cars, and more on the way. Electric vehicles can have performance as good or better than gas-powered cars, and they cost a lot less to operate (only a penny or two per mile.) Why don't we all know about them? Why do so many people 'know' wrong facts about them? Good question!

First, the inexpensive ones:

Electric vehicle conversions (a gas car converted to run on electricity) are generally pretty inexpensive, and can be had for as little as $5000. You won't get the latest technology, so you'll have a limited driving range. But a conversion is a great way to 'get your feet wet' in electric vehicles. This is the sort of car I drive. It does freeway speeds, accelerates and handles fine, and looks like a normal car. I charge mine up at work so I have enough juice to run errands on the way home. Here's a link:

How about new tech electric cars? If you don't need to get on the freeway, you might like the ZAP. The ZAP is only $10,000 brand new. It's very cute, but tops out at about 45mph. It's not much bigger than a motorbike. Link:

How about the ultimate EV? Take a look at a modern electric car:

The Phoenix electric pickup truck - using new, advanced Altairnano batteries (based on research from MIT) - can:

-Travel up to 250 miles per charge
-Carry 5 passengers plus cargo at 95mph.
-Charges batteries in as little as TEN MINUTES.
-Has batteries that last 250,000 miles (never need replacement.)

Now, as to performance - you can't beat the Tesla electric sports car - it does 130mph, and 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds. Driving range is 250 miles:

What, if any, technology needs to be developed further for us to be able to drive rechargable electric cars?

Why can't I go to my car dealer and buy an electric car with an enviromentally friendly battery, that has approximately the same power to weight ratio as my current car, and that I can drive all day and recharge overnight?
Which technologies still need to be developed further to allow this to happen?
I thought we already had the technology to do this. Am I wrong?

Answer
Electric vehicles are available - they are just a little hard to find. But this is an exciting time for electric cars. Don't listen to the naysayers here - most peoples' impressions of this technology is based on 30-year-old electric cars. Technology does not stand still! Take a look at what a modern electric car looks like:

*
The ZAP-X has a 350-mile range, a top speed of 155 mph, puts out 644 horsepower, charges in 10 minutes, and has a battery pack that should last the life of the car (better than 250,000 miles.) The Phoenix uses the same Altairnano Nanosafe li-ion batteries, and is a real car - being built right now for fleet use. Prices for hand-built cars are $60,000 for the ZAP-X, $45,000 for the Phoenix. These prices could fall a lot when mass-production becomes feasible.
*
But you don't even have to spend lots of money if you want to try out an electric car. Freeway-capable EV conversions (normal cars converted to electric) can be found for as little as $5000. Link:

This is the kind of electric car I drive. Electricity to drive it only costs me about a penny per mile! And EVs do NOT pollute very much, despite what powerplants may burn. More info in that above link, and at the links below.
