in india there is a car called REVA.. i m not sure if it is exported. But really cool drive. costs near rs300000. very low driving costs. u don't have to spend over 10 dollars in an year. but replace battery every 5 yrs.. 175 km range

Why can't there be a continuously charging electric battery car....?

When I was a kid, I had a light on my bike that was powered by a generator that worked by rotating against my spinning front wheel.
Since a motor car has 4 wheels, why could you not attach generators to each wheel, which would continuously recharge the battery.
Once the car has started, it will be powered by the rotating wheels.
I'm no scientist, just a thought, tell me where I am going wrong.
I forgot to mention, there would be a series of batteries, not just one 12 volt battery.

That's how car batteries work now. But they don't have enough energy to move an entire car.

They could salvage some of the kinetic energy to prolong its charge but it is nowhere near enough to keep the battery completely charged. It would defy the first law of thermodynamics, you can't get something for nothing

It's like the battery is providing some energy. The generators are siphoning some of that and putting it back. The only way to put put back all of the original energy would be to take ALL of the kinetic energy from the car. But then it wouldn't move.

Generators don't provide energy from nowhere. You may not notice but the generators make the car decelerate once the engine stops pushing it. It's this resistance that is converted directly into electricity. Since you barely notice it slowing the car, it's easy to tell there's not much energy there so it's not enough to totally recharge the car.

Battery on 530i BMW, 2002?

I have changed the battery twice on my car, both walmart brand, both batteries have died in less than a week, it's the same size and the one recommended for the car, yet I don't know what's going on.

Someone told me I had to get the battery registered at a BMW dealer, whatever that means......

Please help me out, wife and kids have been stranded twice.

I had the same problem with my BMW Z3, turned out it was the electric seats draining the battery (switch stuck). Whilst searching for a solution I heard of trunk lights that don't go out-fans that don't go off etc on many BMW models. Have a look around your car and see if anything is out of the ordinary. It is not the battery it will be something in the car that is not operating properly-if you can't find it yourself get it down to a dealer/garage.

Building an electric car for school?

We have less than two weeks to build an electric car in class. Our energy sources are two AA batteries. The Chassis size is 12 cm X 30 cm. The driveline options are gears, pullies, wheels, chains, propellers, etc. It also must have an on or off switch. I'm not very experienced in this field so any recommendations on how to get this all to work is greatly appreciated. Thnx :)

The main trick with any of these is going to be finding the parts in a limited amount of time. You may have to see what is available locally rather than on the web. Look in a $1.00 store for a hand held battery fan for a motor. It won't have a gear but you might be able to use the fan to power the vehicle. Good luck

can i replace a lead acid motorcycle battery with a gel one?

both batteries are 6 volts but i want the battery to lay on its side, so could i just fit a gel battery, or would i have to alter any of the electrics? the original battery is a Turbo 6N6-3B and the gel battery is from a 6 volt kids' electric car.

Yes you can, but be aware of a few things.

Gel batteries are more fragile. Because there is no ventilation (completely sealed) they can be damaged easier by being overcharged. Imagine if you build up pressure, where does it go? Gel batteries should not be charged with a voltage higher than 7.1 volts. Most alternators and staters will charge at 7.3 - 7.4 volts. This may seem like a minor difference, but high voltage (normal for other types) can damage a gel.

An AGM (Absorbed Glass Matte) Sealed Lead Acid Battery might be a good alternative. These are also sealed, so installing on the side wouldn't be an issue. They are confused for gels very often and they are also called 'dry cells'. The three main battery types can be compared as such: flooded is like a glass of water. Gel is like a glass full of stiff jello. AGM is like a glass water with a sponge in it, to absorb the water. Only the flooded is spill-able. The AGM does have small ventilation slits on the case, for pressure release, so they can charge just fine from any charger.

when I was a kid in the fifties there were electric milk cars /floats delivering lots of crates of milk, to the houses in the city.up the hills and down.they were powered with ordinary car batteries.they had a lot of weight on them, but they had no problem going.quiet and no pollution.where are they today?electric cars are the future, and I do not see why our government can't invest in this technology and set up factories to produce and sell to the world before some other western country does.Just because we might be at the forefront of some other leading technologies does'nt mean we have to stop there, does it?

With the President being an 'oil man', you can pretty much hang up the prospects of him pouring any money into electric car technology. If he were interested, he would have at least asked Congress to allocate funds in the last 6.5 years. Maybe the next President has the ability to see farther than 6 months into the future and invest for our future. If nothing else, our future cleaner air and less dependance on foreign oil.

I know what you are saying about electric vehicles yester-century. There were electric vehicles around when the combustion engine came along. Thanks to the oil companies, they died.....probably a painful death. The resurrection is a slow and agonizing process, but it IS happening!!
