I use this like it's my car. I just don't want too lose my job. I would so appropriate if you read this for me. And I have a kid :( Anyway I bought this off Amazon. It was $250 it's a 1000w 48v 10-30aph with a lithuim Ion battery that is 48v 15aph. I have driving it for about a month. I have driven it almost everyday. It goes about 22miles if you help it. So I drove it home today. I ran it full throttle. I usually do because I don't have to go super far. Anyway everything was fine worked perfect. I had to go back to work later. I hooked it up to the charger and took a three hour nap. I woke it was charged. I took it outside to go to work. I turned it on. Nothing all it did was jolt. Like a quit surge of energy and then gone. It last a little less then half a second and it's a weak jolt. Also it tries to go backwards too. All the plugs and cables are fine. Used my neighbors multimeter. I was wondering if it is the motor or speed controller. I'm a pretty mechanical included person so any info would be nice thank you for you time.

At first my best guess was that you may have overstressed the battery and its now paperweight. Measure the voltagetoday and tomorrow and see if it falls dramatically.

However "Also it tries to go backwards too." sounds like it could be the controller.

Can you connect the motor directly to the battery to test both without the controller? Or test the motor by connecting a 12V battery or charger?

If you arent happy doing this a bicycle or appliance repair shop may help

My son has an electric power wheel car that I bought from EBay. it comes with a 6 volt 4.5 ah battery, but seems to run weak on slight up hill side walk. I also have a Speed racer 6v car which runs fine. Would a 6v 12ah battery help or just extend the joy ride. How about a slight increase in amps like 8Ah or will that burn the motor? Any ideas will help. As long as the voltage is the same, it should be safe to run the higher ah battery. The higher amphour rating will last longer between charges. The same as replacing a 12v 400 ah battery in a car with a 12v 800 ah battery. Just make sure it will physically fit.

PLEASE don't buy one for your nephew! I beg you.

1. He's only 3 years old. What are the odds that he is going to drive into something and get hurt?

2. Kids don't get enough exercise as it is, does he really need an electric car where he just sits in it? Get him a tricycle or something like that where he needs to pedal it.

3. I know you want to be the "cool" uncle, but don't you think a 3 year old with an electric car is pretty spoiled and ridiculous?

Get him a toy where he can burn off some energy (like a bike) or can learn something (like a leapfrog).

is long haul truck driving a tough job?

Can be. Like someone else said, if you have kids/family at home, it's hard to meet your family obligations when you're gone all the time. Most long-haul jobs want you gone a minimum of 2 weeks, and you can plan on being out a month at a time if you want to see any money. There are regional/local opportunities out there that make it easier to be home more, though.

If you're single, laid back and pretty flexible, it's not that bad. When I started I was single....I put all my stuff in storage and I'd stay out here 3-4 months at a time. I met my husband out here and we still do the same thing, only we're not as lonely/bored at times! We run hard for months and take our time off in 1-2 week "chunks" wherever we feel like it....if we want to go to Vegas or see the Grand Canyon, we schedule time off in that area, rent a car/hotel room and GO!

You don't have to eat in truck stops- there are 12V coolers and hot-plates that plug into your cigarette lighter. Or you can put an inverter in your truck (converts 12V into household current) so you can plug in a mini fridge, microwave, crock pot, electric grill....not to mention a TV/DVD/game system, etc. Most Wal-Marts on the road have truck access and you can do your grocery shopping there, fix meals on the road and eat much better (and cheaper!) than in the truck stops.

Some truck stops are clean and have decent showers, some of them are crap-holes. But you learn where to go and where to avoid. You can usually ask on the CB whether or not a place has decent showers....you may get a good answer, you may not. Just wear flip-flops in the shower and carry a spray-bottle of disinfectant cleaner to spritz the shower floor & surfaces if you're going somewhere that doesn't look so nice. The water's clean and it'll get YOU clean, and that's the main thing.

It's by no means a glamorous lifestyle....there is bad weather, traffic, idiot drivers, jerk dispatchers/shippers/recievers. There's breakdowns, delays, sitting-and-waiting for no-particular-reason. There's loneliness and boredom. There's the difficulty of finding medical care if you get sick. There's driving in the Northeast, LOL....or any big city for that matter, it can be a headache. You will have days where you wonder why in the world you picked this career.

But if you're lucky, you'll have other days where you see beautiful places, see interesting things, meet good people, and realize that you're lucky enough to be free from the 9-to-5 rat race that most people suffer through. You'll sit in rush hour traffic in Chicago, and realize that even though it's aggrevating, at least YOU don't have to sit in it EVERY SINGLE DAY on your way to work, like the poor schlubs in the cars all around you. You won't get to work and have some boss breathing down your neck, or obnoxious gossipy office workers playing games of office politics.

It's all in how you look at it, your preferences and your priorities. I love it, clearly other people hate it....all I can say is try it and see what you think.

DC Motor size for a project?

What size DC motor and controller should I use to power a small car (simmular to a Little Tikes Car) with a 200lb person in it? Please include all specs of the motor. Thanks.

The power can be determined for several situations:
How fast to go when cruising, and the friction and wind load under this condition.
Maximum acceleration with weight of completely loaded vehicle.
Maximum climb rate with weight of vehicle.

If it is just walking pace and no grades and minimal acceleration, I would say 200W. The motor size will dictate battery size too. It will need gears to match the motor speed to the wheel RPM. If you intend to run with this size motor and a 12V battery it needs to be a large 12V x 60-100AH battery to work well, though that will run for quite a few hours. A bigger motor is better with a 24V battery, and more as it gets bigger still.

Usually these things are determined empirically - experience with other similar vehicles determines what is satisfactory. It is best to look at similar ride on cars. Some kids cars may be more like 50W with a small battery but that doesn't work for long or well.

Consider electric disability/mobility scooters. These are only expected to run on flat hard surfaces, an the sizes mentioned above are something like the top end of these. I expect golf scooters are more powerful as they are intended to run on grass with grades. The third link shows an electric wheelchair for tough conditions with almost 1KW of motor power.
Motors will be specified for RPM and mechanical power in watts (the torque can be calculated from that. They are also specified for voltage to provide this RPM and maximum allowable current. Other important considerations are the cooling (if it has a fan it may not be able to run slowly without overheating), the gears built in or how to mount gears, bearing life, waterproof. Mobility and other scooters mentioned are often available second hand, and would be a good source of all the parts you need. You also need a speed controller and a battery charger to suit, and probably wheels and steering., axles etc.
