If it were faster had better range and could be refueled faster and were cheaper to operate would you still want internal combustion.

No way. The biggest part of owning a hot rod is the sound of an internal combustion engine. Just hearing a V8 car with loud pipes gets me going.

Listening to a vacuum cleaner run does nothing for me. Sure, it's cleaner running and cheaper to operate than a gas engine, but you asked the MOTORHEADS what we think.

I love to build engines and tune them for power. I like them LOUD! I'm 41 years old, not a kid. I have done this all my life, and I'm not ready to quit yet. This would be like asking a surgeon if he would prefer to have a robot and a computer perform an operation. I doubt it.

Well, that's my 2 cents.

Q. Government Motors has come up with yet another boondoggle as big as the Obama stimulus. The Volt is the most ridiculous folly I have ever heard of. How many people in today or tomorrows economy can afford a 45,000$ car with a battery in it that cost 10,000$. It wont be like well my battery is no good got to go to Wal Mart and spend 40.00. They have got to be kidding me probably Bill Gates will have one or Steve Jobs but I dont see any ordinary people with good sense buying this boondoggle. You can buy a lot of gas for the 10000$ cost of a battery. This sounds like another Chevrolet Vega to me.

It is based on the same technology that GM used in its Electro-motive division from 1930 to 2005 to build diesel/electric locomotive engines.

Why are people so against being a little more environmentally friendly?

Q. I'm not a hippy, or a full on Environmentalist but I do understand that at our rate we're going to drain this Earth dry. Yeah Oil may last another 100 - 200 years, but that alone is well into our Kid's generation or our grand kids and the fact we're just wasting and polluting this Earth like there are no consequences.

Then when you even mention that people should be a little kinder to this Earth they all automatically go into what I call redneck mode and start screaming about "Find something that works and I'll do it, but until then I'll stick with my 4x4 Chevy with a 383 stroker super charged" and getting mad when cars like Tesla Model S reach car of the year. I believe their new supercharger (Charging station) is solar powered. and that car has gotten 430+ miles on a charge and cost 79,000 dollars. That is not bad for an Electric car that good and as they go on they'll get cheaper and cheaper. That IS a good alternative.

Don't get me wrong, I am NOT one of those people that preach going green. But I do see that in the long run we're going to end up f**king ourselves big time so I am wondering, why are people so against just being a little more conscious about this Earth?

when you mention how people "should" be doing anything....you are imposing your views.

are you willing to never turn on the ac again? do you really need a pc, ipod, ipad, cellphone etc. how about you stop using toilet paper? do we have to keep killing trees because youre to good to wash and reuse cloth rags?

What's the best way to guard an expensive electric bike against theft when parking it near public buildings?

My older car was recently totaled, and I'm considering it an opportune time to go ahead and make the switch to a more eco-friendly mode of transportation. I'm planning to purchase an electric bike that is fairly expensive, and something that I'm sure would be just attractive to would-be-thieves as it is to me. I've never had a bike like this before, or any bike since I was a kid. What would be the best way to ensure my bike can't be easily taken when I have to park it? Are there new types of locks or other security devices available these days?

It may sound too simple, but works:
You could invest in a long chain which you could pull through the spokes and the frame, and lock it with a big padlock.
When you park, wrap the chain around a lamp post.
Everything is woven through everywhere so thoroughly that nobody would have any chance of stealing it, unless they bring one hell of a bolt cutter.

Which pressure washer should I buy to use around the yard?

I've looked at a few websites and see that I can get gas powered washers for upwards of $400 and also get small electric ones for as low as $80. I understand that the big difference seems to be the pressure that each puts out (PSI) but that's all I understand.

Can I get a compressor so I can say attach a paint sprayer, a tire inflator and then attach a head so I can pressure wash? Or do I have to get a compressor for paint and air and then a pressure washer as well? I'm mostly interested in the washing part but would be nice to have an all in one solution if that is even available?

Here is what I want to do...wash the cars, RV, kids bikes, driveway, vinyl siding on the house and basic yardwork type of chores.

Please help me figure out what to buy?

If it were me... I'd go to the local rental equipment shop and ask the guy in charge of what he thinks. Why - because he would be the one very familiar with what you'd be looking for. As that's what he rents, and is very knowledgeable about.

What happened to electric cars like the one a neighbor drove back around 1960?

While watching "Who Killed the Electric Car?" I was jolted into remembering that when I was a kid, a neighbor had an electric car! It was small and different looking, but worked great. He was a big guy, but could fit at least 4 kids in w him, and it went as fast as other vehicles, and I know he took us at least 20 miles round-trip, no problem.

The technology at the time used heavy lead-acid batteries. A tankful of gasoline plus the tank itself, in an intermediate car, weighs perhaps 90 kg (200 pounds), and would fuel the car for perhaps 600 km (350 miles). Lead-acid batteries of the same weight might give a range of 30 km (20 miles). Electric cars extended the range by carrying as much as a tonne of batteries, adding weight also to the car to support the batteries.
You can still buy some electric cars or car kits such as the "Voltswagen". Mines use electric vehicles, some powered by Edison cells (iron-nickel alkaline) which have low energy density but a looong lifetime.

What do you think will be the next big thing in energy?

Few years ago we had horse powered cars, then came the steam powered engines, and now we have fuel powered engines.

There are some cars in the market that work with electricity today, or solar energy, but none of them have yet addressed the needs of the market, what are your thoughts? Are we going to see or more probably our kids are going to see a new set of vehicles propelled with some sort of energy that replaces petroleum based fuel?

I think plug-in hybrids like the Chevy Volt will be a big deal.

For the short trips, it's all-electric. No gas needed.

For longer trips, you have a small gas engine to generate electricity for the electric engine. And that engine doesn't have to be gas either. E85, biodiesel, butanol, etc.

The possibilities are endless.

I'll give you the averages for Texas and Florida for a family of Four (two adults, two kids)

Texas:
Rent: (2 bedroom apt) $800/month
Groceries: $750/month
Electric: $150 - $350/month (depending on time of year)
Entertainment: $100-$300/month
Daycare: $800/month

Florida:
Rent (2 bedroom apt) $1300/month
Groceries$750/month
Electric: $200-$400/month
Entertainment $150-$350/month
Daycare $1000/month

And don't forget your other expenses like Car note, Car insurance, wether you have to pay a Gas or Water Bill etc etc.

*Moved from Texas to Florida last year. The area REALLY makes a difference. The Texas rates I listed above were from Houston, but living in Central Texas in a small town, it was considerably less (so was the cost of living). We are now in the Ft Lauderdale Area, and everything is more expensive here.
