hey everybody do u think its a good idea to have electric car?and how much do they cost? are they over twenty grand?do you still have to put gas in thoes cars?

Electric cars are great. They're much friendlier for the environment than gas cars. Right now the best available is the ZAP Xebra:

But there are many really nice EVs set to come out soon.

Available in California in October 2008, the Aptera typ-1e will cost about $27,000 with a top speed of 95 mph and range of 120 miles per charge.

Why are all cars not electric even though the technology is readily available?

Electric cars are not the answer to the problem, it would cause even more problems. Where is the electricity going to come from? In some states the power companies can't even keep up with the demand now, so what happens when millions of car plug in to recharge? The government is trying to get rid of coal powered electricity, so what do we use. People in my state protest and are tiring to get rid of the nuke power Company. Also every time a wind mill farm tries to happen the out of starters that have cabins here say not in my back yard and put a stop to it. So you may say Solar, we have a few Solar farms the room they take up for the little power they put out is ridiculous. Besides they only work if there is sun light. To power this country we would have to use up all the farm land . We would end up with electricity but no food. Now how often is there power problems because of storms that last for days or even weeks? you have no power to recharge your car. Now that part of the country is totally crippled. No one can drive to work not even doctors, so some people will die, no one to work the cash register, no one can drive to work to fix the electric problem. So in my opinion you statement_ question is a pipe dream, and not well thought out with not a realistic hypothesis.

The Shelby Ultimate Aero Electric Car is claiming to be the fastest electric car with 2 motors delivering 1,000 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque, capable of reaching 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and peaking at a speed of 208 mph ( The original Aero was powered by 1,183 hp and 1094 lb-ft gas engine) premiered in Jan 2009, we'll have to wait to see them delivered, there were claims about charging time that may have been fumbled by a press agent. One commenter calculated that a 10 minute charge from 110v would be depleted at full throttle in less than 2 seconds.

Seems like the Tesla Roadster Sport is just about the quickest available production car with 3.7 seconds 0-60 time and 12.643 sec @ about 113.9 mph 1/4 mile, the single gear car's top speed is governor limited to 125mph (14,000 revs)

Several electric car models were once available back in the 1990s. However, automakers ensured that their own creation was destroyed because they stood to lose profits from the frequent maintenance required for the gasoline-based internal combustion engine. Plus, Chevron purchased a huge stake in a battery-making firm from GM to ensure such battery technology never saw the light of day. One other culprit in the EV's demise? The hydrogen fuel cell!

The problem with hydrogen fuel cells is that they are extremely expensive to make (billions of dollars spent for technology that still has yet to make it out in the market even after 15 yrs or so of development). Thus, they will not be economically viable for at least another 20 years or so.

I'd say bring back the electric car. It is more efficient and, ultimately, more viable. Plus, it will do more to truly reduce our reliance upon oil.

I keep seeing all these stories with various models of hybrids and electric cars. Of course we all know about cars like the Prius, but where are all the other cars at? The ones we see and say 'oh cool' but we never see for sale?

The Lexus LS 600h L is a real beaut, but is priced over $100,000. I wouldn't go Japanese though, just admired that one car!

I support unborn rights and would support a pro-life amendment to the constitution, with the only acceptation for the mother's life.

I would abolish the department of education because it's a local and state level responsibility.

I watched the documentary "Who killed the electric car" the other day. I'm not sure what really happened, nor do I care about much except the fact that I really really want an electric car. Do they even sell a single one anymore?
The reason I want one isn't only because of the environment or the outstanding gas prices, it's because I feel that it's the 21st century and we have this new technology, yet we spend all of our efforts on an already ancient energy source when we could already go electric! I hate the crap people spew out that "gas gives people jobs" and nonsense like that. It's called adapting to change and increasing efficiency. Fossil fuels and petroleum aren't efficient anymore

They are available today - in fact, I already drive one - there are lots of choices for electric cars, and more on the way. Electric vehicles can have performance as good or better than gas-powered cars, and they cost a lot less to operate (only a penny or two per mile.) Why don't we all know about them? Why do so many people 'know' wrong facts about them? Good question!

Electric vehicle conversions (a gas car converted to run on electricity) are generally pretty inexpensive, and can be had for as little as $5000. You won't get the latest technology, so you'll have a limited driving range. But a conversion is a great way to 'get your feet wet' in electric vehicles. This is the sort of car I drive. Same thing they did for the EV-1... petition government to keep oil standards low, wage a media war against them as being weak, unsafe, bad for business, and even un-American.

(Or say stupid stuff like Greed above - especially when the energy that it does take to charge a car is a fraction of the amount of energy that goes into an automotive gas combustion engine for the same amount of mileage... Not to mention that even with the US's "dirty" power grid, electric car's secondary emissions would still be less then half of of the total emissions by a conventional US gasoline auto.

But then again, which industry would have the most to lose if the US did upgrade our power grids??? So, who can we expect to put up obstacles to that as well?)

Determining the probability of an electric car charging station being available?

Hi there,

I'm just wondering if anybody would know of a way of determining the probability of an event.

I trying to figure out how I could calculate the probability of a charging station for an electric car being available when a person arrives at their destination.

I have the travel data for cars in terms of the number of journeys, journey start and end times and dates etc.

Say there is 50,000 charging stations in a country also.

Is there anyway of working out a rough estimate of this?

Since electric cars can charge from regular electric outlets - in addition to charging stations - I think the odds of an electric outlet being available just about anywhere are pretty good.

As for the mathematics of figuring the average availability of charging stations - the challenge is that charging stations are not evenly distributed geographically. If a given state has 200 charging stations, they are likely to all be concentrated in a few urban areas.

The real solution is to examine a map of charging stations before traveling, like this one:

Also some electric cars - like the Leaf - have charging locations in their GPS map database, so the car can direct you to one if you need it.

I'm an old EV hobbyist, we've been driving electric cars since before there were charging stations. If you are a nice person, and offer to do business with a store or restaurant, you can usually work out permission to charge from an outdoor outlet (most buildings have one somewhere.)

I was just looking at the Nissan Volt, and am amazed. When did humanity take such a bold leap into the new age and where was I when this happened? Anyway, what other car companies manufacture electric cars that actually run on pure electricity, perform all of the functions of a normal car, and can drive for a reasonable amount of time without being charged? Thanks

Ford makes a Transit Connect EV delivery van, available now.
The Th!nk City is available in Europe.
The ZENN EV neighborhood electric vehicle was available for a while, but they stopped making it.
The Mitsubishi i MiEV is in Japan, coming to the US soon.
The Ford Focus EV looks awesome, due in about a year.
Honda has announced an EV Fit in about a year as well.

Will electric cars ever be available for the middle class?

Q. ...Electric cars really intrigue me. It seems that they may be the way to solve or at least help a huge amount of issues with environment, oil dependency..... But, the ones that are actually practical (can go over 30 MPH and farther than 30 miles on a charge) are just way too expensive for most people to actually purchase. Does anyone have the inside scoop on the future of these vehicles? Maybe some links that I have not found?

electric cars should be cheaper to mass produce than infernal combustion of similar performance, because fewer parts, no catalyctic eaxaust or radiator, no high temperature high pressure composite alloys, no complex clutch & gearbox.
lower running costs, lower maintenance.

the "middle classes" just need to demand their electric cars, and not put up with noisy clunky smelly items advertised to them or one-upmanship company cars & SUVs for shopping & school runs (SUV-slow ugly vehicle)
