As an owner of a 72 Super Beetle myself, and treasurer of one of Texas' oldest and largest VW clubs, welcome to our private corner of hell, where all your different car parts have their own personal four lettered sailor blushing descriptions - just kidding - we love busted knuckes and poorly fitting after market Mexican parts!

like what some say, you can get a lot of stuff (much of it junk - be careful) at JCWhitney (www.jcwhitney.com). I never go to these people unless they have the same thing for a cheaper price than California Import Parts (see next paragraph).

There are some other places that will offer better quality parts when available. I personally like California Import Parts ( http://www.cip1.com ). You can also get quality stuff at http://www.busdepot.com

You can also find a lot of stuff, including advice on "The Samba" ( http://www.thesamba.com ). It is a veritable Turkish Bazaar for air cooled VW fans.

I recommend you join a local Volkswagen club for help, commeraderie, consolation and advice. You can sign up on the Houston Volkswagen Club site for free ( http://www.hvwc.org ) for advice and general bug talk. You don't have to live in Houston. We get people from all over the world on our site. There are many other clubs across the US.

If you want ideas... go to a VW car show. We hold one every year.

A classic beetle is the most personally recognizable vehicle you can own... Nearly everyone personalizes their bug to their own personal style and taste. It is the one vehicle you can own that you'll feel pretty confident that no one is going to pull up next to you at an intersection in the same thing.

When your bug is looking good, you will draw so much attention and adoration - especially from kids who'll scream "Look Mommy, there's Herbie!" You'll also be the someones score in a game of "Slug Bug" or "Punch Buggy".

Rules for Bug Restoration and Customization for Your New Bug:

1. Don't listen to what others tell you... Do what YOU want with your bug. Restore it and make it to what it tells you it wants to be.

2. Give your bug a name... and a gender.... As you drive, travel, live, eat, sleep, date, marry, have kids, send them off to college, take your grandkids fishing in your machine, somewhere along the way, you'll realize that your little bug is just as much a living, breathing personality and part of your family as your twin sister is. Do everything with your car as if it were an act of love and your bug will love you back in it's own tempramental way. My five year old neice goes into the garage just so she can "talk to my car".

3. Glitches in operation are personality traits...

4. Have patience... Rome wasn't built in a day. Sometimes your car will be inoperable for weeks or even months during your restoration...

5. Most of all, use your new family member to have fun.

6. Selling your bug will be the sad day of your life and a memorable day of someone elses life.

On to bug styles...

THERE ARE MANY STYLES:

Styles that keep your bugs body...

Cal Look:

Cal look is a racing bug style... This usually consists of a chopped top and a dropped front. Engines are usually highly tuned and sometimes have the back deck lid standing out away from the car so that it acts as an air scoop.

Restored:
Restored is the art of taking the bug back to it's factory condition as close as you can. This usually involves factory original parts wherever necessary and factory original paint.

Altered-Restored, Custom, and Radical Custom apply to modifications that alter your bug in some fashion from mild alterations like your favorite paint color or improved parts (like an electric windshield washer pump), to radical conversions of all sorts.

Rat Rods: These cars are cal look racers that have the fenders removed to give the car a more hot rod look... See here:

Styles that involve throwing away the body and putting something else on the pan...

I hope this helps! Here's a picture of my bug (Hilma) decorated for the release of the recent "Herbie" movie. Our club had a commemerative car show at a local theater. I kept the decorations on till our car show that year.

Hope to see you on our web site forums some day! (www.hvwc.org).

How much does it cost to convert a car to electric?

Moose

I am doing research to find out what it would take to convert a car to electric? Could anyone give me prices on kits. Or links to websites. You can exclude the price of the car, motor, and batteries. I can also build things like the battery box or motor mounts. I am more concerned about the everything else such as the wiring harness, controllers, adapter plates, etc. I have done a good bit of google searching, but not much luck. It is just rather difficult to find a website that is straight forward about pricing.

Answer
It varies according to how much you want to get out of it. If you want Tesla Roadster performance you can expect to spend well over $55,000. Popular cars to convert are the original Volkswagen Beetle, the Chevy S10 pick-up, and Porsche's so there are partial kits and full kits available minus the batteries. One company will sell you a kit for any car that they have an adepter plate for.

Most home conversions can be had for around the $12,000 mark. You can do a budget for less than $6,000 but you may have to sacrifice highway performance. There is a report of a high school kid building an EV for $600 but he used a lot of scrounged and donated parts. There is a gentleman in Canada that claims to have technology to revive dead lead acid batteries (he gets them for free) and he puts them in his EV conversion. The biggest expense in a EV conversion is the batteries.
