What types of electric drive vehicles are available for purchase in the US? Where can you go to buy one?

Even looking for new technologies if anyone has heard of very small technologies which are affordable. Can't quite seem to find much in the U.S. on the web.

There are a few electric car companies in the US. One includes the Global Electric Motorcar Company, or GEM. (http://www.gemcar.com/) There are a number of dealers throughout the US and Canada. They make low-speed vehicles that you can use around town and are legal in nearly all 50 states and BC in Canada. Another would be ZENN Car, made in Canada. (http://www.zenncars.com/) They are too low-speed electric vehicles and are sold in the US but not Canada. (Odd?) I like these cars much better than the GEM Cars, because they are safer, more enclosed and have A/C! All you have to do is plug them in at night in a regular outlet.

However, I'd wait for the Th!nk City. (http://www.think.no/think) They claim for it to be under $20000 when it reaches the US early next year. It is very safe and can go up to 65mph. It's slightly bigger than a Mercedes Smart car and can be equipped with 2 "Child Seats" (very small seats) in the back! It is fully electric and is charged via regular outlet in your home. It can run for up to 110 miles on full charge. Fun, much?

Anyway, that's all I know. Sad that most of us can't buy a Tesla Roadster. :(

Ok so ive been trying to decide for a while now about which car to get and im trying to decide between the 370z Nismo, The mustang gt, and of course, the chevy Camaro. Im doing my homework on these cars and I kinda like the look of them all so im looking for the one which can pretty much out perform the other. I heard that theres an engine that can start off as a V8 and then can switch to a V6! I think that's amazing but I don't know much about it, how does this work and can any of these use this feature?

Also what does torque mean lol?

Opinions vary on which car is better than which other car, and in the long-run you'll decide which one best suits you.

As to cars functioning as V6s and V8s, the concept has been around quite awhile, but has previously not worked well in execution. Essentially, you provide fuel, air and spark to six cylinders of a V8, or in some earlier iterations as few as four cylinders, but when you plant your foot on the throttle the ignition and fuel supplies to the additional cylinders is activated as the demand for horsepower and torque exceeds what is available in the current lesser mode of operation. Though it sounds simple, it has been an elusive goal to accomplish effectively until recently--and I'd say the jury is still out on it. Likewise, cars that currently shut the engine off every time you come to a stop light, may well save fuel, as the 8-6-4 concept is intended to do, but how reliable is it? It certainly places a premium on having a good battery or capacitor system to aid restart. It also greatly increases wear on the starter motor. Just not sure either of these technologies are all they are represented to be.

What is torque? That's a little easier. Think of it as a measure of force. For example, horsepower is a measure of a capacity to perform work. One horsepower translates as the ability to move 33,000 pounds one foot in one minute. However, an exertion of torque may occur with little discernible consequence at all. When I press as hard as I can against the side of the Empire State Building, it does not appear to move at all, but force is being exerted nonetheless. Torque is simply a measurement of how much force that would be. A 250-pound linebacker can exert a little more than a four-year old child.

Now in terms of engines torque is usually expressed in how many foot-pounds of turning force the engine can generate, sometimes measured at the flywheel, sometimes at the drive axle. And here is something I've always found kind of interesting. You will notice when they are making claims about an engine's torque they usually express it in relation to the engine's RPMs. For example, a reasonably powerful engine might have peak torque of 350 ft. lbs at 2500 RPMs Torque may trail off somewhat as the engine revs higher than that, or operates at speeds lower than that. And, in most instances, what is referred to as a "flat" torque curve is considered highly desirable, as that means that the engine produces roughly the same amount of torque across a large RPM range, say from 2,000 RPMs all the way up to 5,000. But no internal combustion engine produces torque at 0 RPMs. Steam engines (external combustion) do, as the steam moving into the piston is trying to turn the train's axles even when movement is not present. Likewise, electric car motors have measurable torque even when the motor is not spinning, as the magnets inside are still trying to turn. But internal combustion engines in cars must achieve a certain operating speed before they begin to generate useful torque.
