Q. I live in Kentucky, I'm still waiting to finalize my divorce, trying to get my share of the assets, and in the middle of trying to get full custody. I work a full time job and receive child support, this is still not enough to support me and my three girls. I am having to rely on the support of another guy whom I do not love and is borderline abusive and I would love to get away from him but I can not afford to do it on my own.

Answer
Yes there is..It's called wellfare help..sounds awful i know..but this is about supporting your 3 kids till things get better in your life..and it will..it's just going to take some time...trust me the wellfare office understands the struggles of single parents and by u going down there to apply for the things that u are having trouble to make ends with...they will help u...so long as u are 100 percent honest with them...Number one..if u don't have medical insurance to cover the kids...u will get it right away..since u are a family of 4.(not including this guy)and u make 40 thousand or less u can get it..including foodstamps..(just untill things get better).U can also apply for public housing..sure that sounds awful..but there are alot of places that are decent as hell and u wouldn't ever know that the landlord allows section 8 people.(section 8 means the landlord gets there rent period no questions ask cause the state pays him u pay him just a little maybe only 100 to 200 a month only set back is u are on a waiting list..but it goes quick in the spring time..u can also get help with heat the list is endless..all u need to show them is all the kids Social security numbers, yours as well..proof of paycheckstub from your job and copys of all your bills that u pay.like car insurance gas bill electric bill ect ect..u will be flabbergasted on all the areas that the wellfare dept can help u with...Remember this is your tax money that is helping u so why not make it work for your kids
there is also a place called the YWCA not YMCA(thats for men)they help with apartments furniture childcare ect ect..i know u ask for financial help here..instead of getting a check to cover your bills..all that i mention above they personaly pay your bills for u..if u ever want to talk more to me please feel free to contact me through my name...Good luck sweety u can do it..and get rid of the abusive so called boyfriend u don't need this right now..u and your kids come first and nothing else..PERIOD

How to divorce - he went to Canada - I'm broke and scared?

woodnymph

I bought a house before I got married and lived in it with my kids for ten years before marrying. Then I moved to the States where my husband bought a house in his name - illegally - he was supposed to get my signature on the papers, but didn't. I wish I'd realised then he was a piece of...(sorry, rather angry right now).
He then left me and the kids and moved to Canada, leaving us with nothing - but I stayed in the house (his house?) as he can't sell it without my signature. So we have a roof over our heads. He gives us no child support. He is threatening to try and get full custody of the children if I divorce him. Although he has hardly seen them in a year, just a couple of weekend visits. He's telling me that my English house can be the money to support the children, that I should sell it.I'm living off credit cards, and the situation feels horrible. I want to divorce, so I can start again financially -I am nearly bankrupt trying to support these children on my own. What to do?

Answer
well, the honor system doesnt work, thats for sure. thats why they made state/federal law for child support.

no wonder your angry. he is a piece of you-know-what.

1) get a court order for child support.

2) contact your local legal aid office. all states have them, and are in most counties.they go on a sliding scale, so its free to most. look in the phone book, call your county court clerks office or your states Bar Assoc for the number.

make an appointment with legal aid and keep it.
3) if you have a child support order already, you can get a federal warrent for his arrest. ask legal aid how to do it.
4) contact all churches in your area. find out where the food bank(s) are. go weekly to them, this will free up money for other bills.
5) contact your board of public utilities (or what ever they call it in your state) and ask what programs they have for low income or single families. they have programs for gas, heat, electric and sometimes phone.
6) the redcross sometimes helps with cheap cars.
7) the salvation army helps with just about everything.
8) contact your social services office (county). get medical insurance for the kids and see what else you qualify for.
9) if you qualify for assistance with social services, your ex is responsible for paying it back. they will hunt him down like a dog for their payback.
10) they can take his drivers lisence
11) they can put a tax refund intercept on all state/federal checks
12) they can put a lien on all and any property he has
13) they will put him in jail, no matter where he runs to.

14) contact your regional Federal Child Support Office (if you have a child support order already). ask them what they are going to do about this deadbeat.
15) most people who go through divorce have to file for bankrupty, so dont beat yourself up about it. do it, clear the slate so you and your kids will have a better life.
16) post his deadbeat face on a deadbeat site online.

all links are below. one is a calculator; just click on your state and fill it in. both parents incomes are usually considered. it will give you a general idea as to what he should be paying.

the rest of the links are to help you. just click on your state and find what you need.

stay strong and stand your ground. you babies depend upon you doing so.

Can I put a 12v car battery in a kids electric jeep?

I was recently given two electric ride on toys for kids. Both a beat up pretty bad but the motors work, batteries don't. The factory batteries are expensive sooooo.... I was wondering if a car/atv/motorcycle/ battery would work? The originals were 12v. I do know there is a safety issue as far as liquid acid from gel acid but I have a container solution for that. I'm more curious about it exploding, lighting on fire or another unforeseen issue. Any thoughts before I try it? Don't answer if you are going to say " don't ever use anything but factory approved blah blah blah.." These are junk and the " you cant do that " crowd does not interest me unless it is backed up by scientific fact. Kids will not be driving these either. Any other junk yard tinkerers out there with some sage words of advice?
12v all the way, not Power Wheels plus the batteries are clearly labeled. Gotta say I love the actual experience with the John deer. Like it was brought up do u know if he had a problem with the battery lasting over multiple charges?

Answer
Yes it will work for sure. My father inlaw has a john deere toy tractor for his nieces that runs on a car battery. That thing runs for ever too instead of the 15-20 minutes the factory battery is good for. Just every once in a while you will have to hook it up to a car battery charger. They can be expensive, hope you have one. The kids will love you for it. Lol. Good luck.

How dangerous are car batteries?

xylem

We have kids who are driving (scary) and I was wondering about how to tell them to do simple car maintenance. My daughter called the other day, her car wouldn't start, it was just a loose battery cable.

What would happen if she did "blank" while trying to fix it? Like what if she touched the positive terminal with one hand and the negative with the other? What if she accidentally laid a wrench on the battery, so that it was touching both terminals? What about car batteries exploding? I've heard of it, but it's rare, right? When jumping your car I know to make sure the connectors don't touch, but I don't really know what could happen.

If you were instructing a new teen driver, what warnings would you give about the possible dangers of a car battery?
Thanks!

Answer
Automotive batteries are the lead-acid type. They are full of sulfuric acid, which is extremely caustic and causes severe chemical burns if not washed off immediately. Fortunately, car batteries these days are much less prone to leakage than they used to be, when they had exposed caps to which water needed to be added occasionally.

They are dangerous in other ways, however, The most significant danger is from the accumulation of hydrogen gas, which is released from the battery when it's working. A spark from an incorrectly connected jumper or charger cable can ignite the hydrogen, which may cause an explosion. You really don't want that inside the engine bay, where gasoline is also present.

To properly attach a jumper cable, the last connection should be made to a ground on the disabled car. This should not be the negative terminal of the battery, but to a bolt or stud, preferably on the engine block, away from the battery. The cables should be removed in the same order. This will reduce the danger of sparking and igniting any hydrogen that may be lurking there. And obviously, you should never do any kind of electrical work on a car if you smell gasoline. One spark, go BOOM!

You mentioned the danger of a wrench or other short circuit across the battery terminals. This is a real danger. Car batteries have tremendous current capabilities, and a short circuit can produce a huge, white-hot electric arc. It's hot enough to melt steel and inflict severe burns, and to set the car on fire. Always use caution when working with metal tools around the battery. If you must work on it, disconnect the negative (ground) cable first, so that the positive terminal no longer has potential to the vehicle ground. It is not dangerous to touch the positive terminal with your bare skin, because 12V is not a hazardous voltage. But it is made of lead, which is not good to touch if you can avoid it.

Finally, the batteries are dangerous when they are dead and have been removed from the car. They can begin to leak acid, and they are also full of lead, an environmental hazard in itself. A spent battery should be taken to a hazardous waste disposal facility - most communities have them - or to an auto parts store or garage that will accept them. Some of these places will even pay a little money for them because of the recyclable lead they contain.
